Accounts :: User Not Showing Up On Logon Screen
Jul 30, 2014I recently upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It was fine until I decided to change my account to a microsoft account.
After logging out and restarting, I could not see my user on the log on screen. It still showed up in Control Panel and PC Settings after logging in as another Admin.
To try to fix this I created a new user and was going to copy files into it but this new user didn't show up either.
Is this a Win 8.1 bug or is there something you have to do?
I can always revert to Windows 8 because I backed up my computer before updating but I would not prefer this.
After Logon Black Screen And Cursor Error
Sep 15, 2014This has happened on a few different systems. After it has the login screen, It will go to the desktop (completely black no icons) and a cursor.
Windows sign does not work nothing other then CTRL + ALT + DEL works but wont bring up task manager.
So I end up doing the "Advanced start up" where I Restore the system and do a fresh load, but when I try to run the updates i get the error of
" Log file c:windowssystem32logfilessrtsrttraill.txt "
So I go to CMD (administrator) and run SFC/ Scannow
"Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair service"
then, chkdsk x: /f
Cannot lock current drive, windows cannot run disk checking on this volume because it is write protected. I ended up erasing the HDD and starting from scratch and STILL get the same issue.

Jul 3, 2013Basically when I go go onto the start menu there are these black rectangles everywhere (screenshots will be added) also when i attempt to save an image off google i have to manually scroll around the screen to be able to see the options, this happens for all windows 8 apps.
I'm using a HP envy, 8gb ram, windows 8 64 bit operating system and radeon graphics.

Nov 20, 2012My PC was working fine before today, until I used Ultra UXtheme patcher for Windows 8 x64 and then applied a custom VS for Windows 8.
After a restart, Windows Explorer was not launching, so I opened task manager and did a sfc /scannow. After a reboot, I get to the Windows 8 boot menu (I have a dual-boot on this HDD with win7), and then the screen just turns on and off every few seconds, with the numlock light flickering with the screen.
I tried using the automatic repair, both from the boot menu and from a backup USB, but it does not detect anything. and I still have the same issue.
I restored the backups of uxtheme.dll, uxinit.dll, and themeui.dll, but that didn't work either.
Attached is my ntbtlog.txt.
There is no BSOD, the HDD keeps on spinning a few minutes after boot, and the numlock keeps on flashing. Anything else I can do from my win7 install? I'm currently trying to delete the theme.
Deleting the theme doesn't work, safemode doesn't work either. It seems to be a driver issue, but there were no driver updates when it was working?
Screen Flicker Right After Logon In 8.1
Jul 31, 2014Recently, I noticed that every time after I log into Windows 8.1 with my password, the screen flickers for like a second. What might have changed to cause this. I haven't installed anything new before the problem occurred.
I do remember that I was fiddling with some display options (changing items sizes) but I did restore them back to the default options. Just updated my nvidia drivers but that didn't solve the issue either.

Jul 13, 2014I do a lot of remote administration after hours and I often login as an admin user into client workstations to fix various issues. One thing that I do to eliminate confusion is to edit the registry of a Win7 machine and change the HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionAuthenticationLogonUILastLoggedOnUser registry value back to the user's username.
That way inattentive users don't keep trying their password with the Admin username when they attempt to login the next day. I see that Windows 8 has the same key, but changing that value doesn't appear to "stick". It appears to be overwritten when you logout/reboot/shutdown. I've also tried deleting the SAM entries in the same key, but that seems to have no effect. I've seen several posts on how to show all users or none on the logon screen, but I'm trying to minimize the changes that end users will experience (complain about). I'm also hoping for a solution that will work with both domain and non-domain joined computers.

Feb 25, 2014I cannot get the touch keyboard or picture password to come up consistently at logon screen. I had to go to services to make the touch-service work with desktop and logon (it was unchecked). Now, at fresh start-up or restart I can get the keyboard by touch but will not get it again if I log off and log back on. And under no conditions do I get the picture password option although I have a picture set up for it.

Everytime or almost everytime I click on an app or go to the desktop and try to get on IE 10 (desktop version), my screen flashes and goes black for a few seconds then returns me to the screen with the space needle, then I click on it and it signs me back in. When I try to use Google Chrome, the websites freeze up on me. I don't want to have to reinstall/reformat as I paid $40 for this for one, and secondly, I don't want to have to repurchase Office 2010 as my licenses ran out. I ran every update that comes up and restart, but this doesn't change this issue. . why it does this and any way to fix it without reformatting?

May 16, 2013I'm having WIndows 8 Pro N, I encountered some issue here that Windows will boot into black screen quite sometime.
The moment when I tried to perform a restart or switch on my laptop, I could see the Windows 8 logo and then the screen just turned black. CTRL ALT DEL doesn't work and what I have to do is perform forced shut down.
After I switched it on again, everything just worked fine. The frequency of having the problem is 50%.

Windows 8 X64 Loads To Black Screen?
Mar 9, 2013I loaded Windows 8 x64 about a week ago, it has booted fine every day until this morning. Instead of the loading windows logo its just a black screen that never does anything, I tried safe mode but F8 does nothing. What would cause this? It loaded just fine about 10 times, the only problem I had was with the installation I had to disable the hyper-threading to install the 64-bit version.

Usually Windows starts itself in 10 seconds about. During the black screen commands don't works. Can be the use of cc cleaner, that cleaning temporary files, creates this problem? I tried to reinstall the last version of the Nvidia display drivers but nothing changed. I took away all those unuseful programs from the windows startup.

Apr 3, 2013I was casually using my pc and it suddenly shutdown. I tried to restart it, but it's stuck on black screen. Here's the thing there was no windows logo or no bios or no nothing appeared on the screen. It just goes black even if I restart it a hundred times. I am sure the cables of the monitor are fine and I am also sure that there are signals coming from the pc.
P. S. I even ASSUMED that the pc must have switched on and typed password to login and waited enough to get it to sleep mode and then recover from there. But still no luck.

Since the last two days I am having a problem where when I restart my system it automatically gives me a black screen, nothing happens at all and I have to shut down my laptop by pressing the power button and then start it again.

Dec 19, 2013I built a custom pc recently and I decided to get Windows 8.1. I built the pc and installed Windows 8.1 no problem. Rebooted after install no problem. Updated my graphics card drivers (tried playing minecraft and it said I needed to) and rebooted, no problem. Then, the next day when I turned it on, it booted onto the start screen, before the login, I clicked to continue to login and it went black. Everything but the mouse. It would flash on and off every little while.
I could move the mouse off the screen to the right and bottom, but not the top and left. I rebooted, same thing. One more reboot, and the splash screen is different . It says "Please Wait" on top of the loading circle thing. It says Recovery. I click advanced settings and continue to windows 8.1. It reboots and works fine. Until next time I turn it off and back on.

I tried everything, like refreshing and restarting the computer. The last thing that I tried to do was to completely restart the computer; I created a new user and everything, but as I logged in windows 8 wouldn't start, and a black screen would come up. My computer is running fine like the mouse and the "ctrl-delete" are also working.

Jan 20, 2014Well, the other day I found a game that I used to love from 2001 and I put it in my computer, and it starts up fine. But while it was loading I tried to alt+tab out of it to do other things while waiting. But instead it gives me one of those half game half main screen things. Where the task bar is show while the game is still on screen, but doesn't work to open the windows etc. so I tried to use task manager and it wouldn't work because of the glitches screen.
So I thought maybe if I restarted my computer it would go back to normal. But no, instead I get a (different) version of the "windows 8 black screen of death" thing. Instead of the blinking screen and stuff, the computer would turn on normally and show the hp logo (hp pavillion g6 btw) but after that, nothing. No cursor, no blinking, just nothing. Except when I press escape when it boots up, I can get into bios and stuff fine. So I tried to put my restore cd in there to try and "boot up" from it as most sites called it, and nothing. Or is it just my computer dying ( which it shouldn't be because I got it April of 2013 )
Also, sometimes when I boot it up it will go straight to the "windows automatic repair" screen with the logo, but it will sit there for maybe a minute or two and go back to a black screen

Jun 19, 2014I am involved in prepping several Panasonic Toughpads for deployment in our environment w/ Windows 8.1 installed. While prepping, we are logging in with domain accounts that have some domain admin privileges for various setups on the local machine.
Upon completion of setup, logging in as the assigned domain user, which, on these systems, will be a local admin. However, after a few seconds, where the account name is displayed on the top right corner of the start menu, it shows the logged in domain username--as it should--then quickly changes to show the previously logged in domain admin user's name.
This is phenomenon is occurring for myself and two of my coworkers who are using isolated domain admin logins assigned to them.
Troubleshooting that has already happened: restarted the system, deleted the domain admin's user folder and associated registry key in the ProfileList to no avail. Logged in as yet a different user, and back to the assigned user's account but still showing my domain admin name in the account name. Is this getting circular yet?
