some icons or I don't know how to call them, display as squares; just like when a character can't be read, a square is displayed instead. I'm thinking it's something with my languages properties?
View 2 RepliesI did a clean install of Windows 8 like 2 days ago and since yesterday I have noticed that when I am in "Metro" that some icons show up as just squares. For example if I right click on a tile that menu at the bottom will come up and all the icons above the actions are squares or half squares. The mute icon from the charms bar is also a square. I've put 2 pics up.
View 9 Replies View RelatedWhen I changed back to Opera, the net icons on my desktop all changed to plain white squares. So I thought, OK, just redo the links via opera bookmarks - same result. All of the correct icons have been replaced with a blank white box.
So I went into properties and tried to change icons, but only got the windows generic ones in sys32.
So I selected a globe of earth for FB and it put an icon of a little monitor with a bar underneath it, so I tried again thinking I had clicked the wrong icon, nope, just the same. Whichever icon I click on, the same one appears in desktop.
As I have had varying degrees of success with browser software, I am beginning to thing that the windows software itself is to blame. I keep windows up to date with updates etc, so it not the lack of, but something is not right at all with 8.1.
I never had this problem with any previous ver of Windows.
The logon screen on my computer is not showing the icons for switch user, power, ease access, etc. The only thing I've done recently is uninstalled some fonts. Thinking this may have caused the problem, I reinstalled them but I'm still having this problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:
Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.
I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.
But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.
The icons on the start menu and login screen are missing. how do i solve this?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a PC with 3 disks, all sata,I had installed w7 on a 640gb disk, on a 250gb I have w8,and lately I installed again w7 on a 80gb disk so to use the big disk for saving files. the problem is that the 640 disk has kept some boot info and I can only go to w8 if I boot the PC from this disk, if I boot the PC from the 250 it gets me again to w7.plus that in w8 I can't see the big disk, I try reinstall it with no success. so what can I do to have my w8 see all disks and erase the boot info on the 640 disk?

Whenever I open the system property (by right clicking on Computer > Property or directly from Setting > Pc info), the mouse pointer starts to flicker and slows down its movement then the desktop goes blank with the blue (or whatever) colour of the background. Then after some time it again returns back to normal but system property is closed.

It took a while to get a pic of these because they would disappear supper fast. Here is a pic of them.
Upto Windows 8 it was easy to change the folder that would open on clicking a Windows Explorer shortcut. All that was needed was to change the target in the Property Sheet to the desired folder.
In Windows 8.1 this is not possible. On opening the Shortcut Property Sheet the target Text Box contains "File Explorer" which is greyed out and can't be changed. My question is how to change the shortcut target in textbox from "File Explorer" to "My Documents" or the R: Drive as in my case?
I have pasted some English alphabet OpenType font files into control panel / appearance and personalisation / fonts but they do not show up in the fonts folder. If I try to paste the files again it tells me "the gotham light file font is already installed - do you want to replace it?"
So if the font files are installed why can't I see them in the fonts folder?
I have tried unchecking "hide fonts based on language settings" but that does not seem to work. The fonts do not show up in Microsoft Word or Adobe CS6 and I get the same problem on my Windows 7 machine.
After recently installing stardock suite with icon manager, i decided to uninstall the program and go back to just using rainmeter. After doing so, it seems like all my icons (programs and windows defaults) are one icon and corrupt.
Ive already done the following:
installed icon manager and restored windows defaults with no luck
rebuilt windows icon cache and thumb cache with no luck
restarted explorer.exe
This is frustrating to say the least and i really dont know why these methods dont work..

So my question is about how to change an icon in Windows 8. All I've really seen is how to change icons of folders, and icons of file types, but is it possible to change a single file's icon?
For example, let's say I have a recorded .mp3. I want to change that .mp3's icon to something different than just the normal .mp3 icon one of these guys. Is it possible to change only the icon of one specific file?
After using Windows 8 for months now, I still have trouble recognizing certain apps right away. The reason icons work so well is it takes advantage of our in-built ability to recognize patterns. One look at an icon and we subconsciously know what it's for.
But a bunch of squares and rectangles...
I pointed this out to some people when the MS released the beta of Windows 8. And I honestly thought I'd eventually get use to it. But months after, I still have to focus a little more just to know which tile to press for what.
I use HP pavilion dm1 . from last night still my laptop shows signing out when i try to open it.

I need to know this because I am getting an SSD and will need to make a Windows DVD so I can do a clean install onto it.
I use the Commandline with just about everything I do on my laptop, often utilizing batch scripts that I've written, from editing, renaming, moving, timestamping, exif manipulation of my image files to SET-ting variables etc..
There remains quite a bit of internal commands that I'm not familiar with. One of them being the "sort" command of which I think may be responsible for my current issue.
I read a little about it via the "/?" command then gave it a little input until it occurred to me from the returns that command was supplying of which were no returns at all, that I was not doing things right so I got bored and went onto something else. It seems that since that time, all my text files have had "par" appended to them. and I don't know how to correct this.
At one point It looked like this would only happen if I opened them from the command prompt but then noticed "par" was there if I double clicked the text file. Is this something to do with that "Sort" command or is it something else all together? And, how in the heck can I fix it because it's really getting on my nerves as I'm creating some Tutorials pages utilizing "Choice" and "More" with cmd.exe being the viewer and every time I format some text, get it all prettied up for the tut program command muffles it up with that damn "par"!
I've got a laptop with two NTFS partitions on it; one for Windows 8, and another for storage of random things. Both are NTFS-formatted, and they're on a basic disk.
The problem is: When I open the "Computer" window, it only shows me the C: drive that I'm running Windows from. Other things are there... the DVD-RW, network folders, other computers on the net, etc. But the H: drive (the other NTFS partition I use for random storage) isn't there. HOWEVER..... if I go up to the address bar and type in "H:" and hit <Enter>, it takes me to that drive, and the H: drive suddenly appears in the folder-pane on the left of the window.
It does the same thing for any USB drives I plug in. I can type their drive letters into the address bar, and then it'll take me to that drive and it's icon will show up in the left-hand folder pane. But then, when I navigate away from that drive, it disappears again.
It's like Windows is hiding them from me unless I know the address, kinda like how putting "$" at the end of a shared folder name does it with network shares.
When clicking administrative tools in control panel it says location not available. The other icons in control panel work. Did it get moved or can it be added back in?

Ok since Windows 8 there was a cool feature within windows explorer that would show the content of a shortcut folder at the bottom without having to click on it.
Then 8.1 disabled the feature and hidden the feature really well. It took some time doing, actually it was probably more of a fluke, but I was able to turn on the feature again.
But now it was some how rested and the feature has been disabled again, and I can't find it.
What the feature is called, all I know is that if you open up your file explorer go to either of your Documents / Music / Pictures / Video folder, it then would show the contents of your shortcut folder from your other hard drive. The view at the top, lets say you went to pictures, would show all the folders that you have in the Pictures. You'd have a description above the folders that says "Pictures (how many folders you have)" and below that the file extension. Below that you would have the "(The name of your shortcut) (how many files/ folders you have)," the extension, and then the content that are within the Shortcut all within the same explorer.
Iam running 8pro 64 bit. when I open an file explorer window, sometimes there is everytihg, but most of the time, there is just "desktop" and it is searching.I have to manually right click and open new explorer to get it to show all drives and locations. Also, when I get into a window with movies or pictures, all the files are white, no thumbnail! I have no virus and the installation is new and it is from the Microsoft site. all updates are installed.

itunes recognizes the phone in ultimate but NOT in win8.
i have tried different cables and an older iphone and itunes still does not recognize it win8.

Looking in C:Program FilesWindowsApps - there is nothing named Photos anywhere in that dir.
Normally I could go to control panel>View Installed updates and it would be there. Problem is, it appears as though it was preloaded on the machine so the Internet Explorer 9 update isn't even listed.

I know it can recognize the drive with Linux on it because it shows it to me in file manager. Prior to that I unplugged and rep lugged the led plugs but I don't think that was the cause. So how do I show the grub menu?

I have received a new laptop from HP to replace my original purchase which turned out to have a defective keyboard. I am in the process of clearing my personal info/history from the defective computer before returning it to HP.
I have deleted all my files and have uninstalled all the programs that I installed. I also deleted the items shown in the "Desktop" directory (which were the shortcuts I created). That may have been a mistake because now I am attempting to clear the shortcut icons from the desktop, with no success! Since the files to which the shortcuts pointed have been deleted, I get a message telling me the file is no longer located in the "Desktop" directory (no kidding, I deleted it!). I can't delete them or even rename them or delete their names. I realize now that I should have deleted the shortcut icons before clearing the "Desktop" directory.
These shortcuts don't link to anything, but because their names give an indication of my personal interests, I would prefer to have them removed. I could reformat the drive, but I assume HP would like to get the machine back complete with all files that they originally supplied with it. I really don't want to do a restore and start over clearing my info.
The .jpg icons in Windows Explorer no longer show the picture but a "generic" scene. How to get the pictures back?

I don't like seeing my desktop icons, so I did right click on desktop -> View -> Show desktop icons so that they disappear. They're gone, but every time I restart my laptop, they appear again.
I'd like to solve the problem correctly without just deleting all of my desktop icons.
