Generic Icons In Explorer

View 3 RepliesThe icon images on the app screen are specific to the website they link to, but when I pin them to the Start menu, many of them become the generic "e" for explorer icons. They do retain the name of the website, which is okay, but if I change the size to "small", I am left with a bunch of similar-looking icons.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:
Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.
I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.
But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.
I'm trying to find a way to make icons of images in Explorer larger than the "extra large" option. I don't see the slider in Win 8 Explorer to do that. Is there something else that could be done to size the icons to what I want them to be?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am running Win 8.1 upgraded from 8. Every now and then all the icons on my taskbar start to disappear and it loses all functionality I can not click the start menu button or right click the taskbar.
I have to restart the process to get them back which doesn't worry me that much as I have written a program that makes it 2 clicks to restart it.
My desktop icons are still fine and my desktop wallpaper slide show still works, also I don't see anything regarding this in my event logs.
Basically my icons are fubar! :
More detail:
Current Setup/programs that affected this issue:
RDP
Stardock Fences 2
Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition
Basically I RDPed into my home PC, tried to play some Street Fighter 4. Things worked, all was happy, and the Gods rejoiced. Until I returned home. Upon trying to log into my PC the desktop showed only partially complete (by this I mean the icons were there but they were in the process of moving to the "fence"). Explorer gave me the wonderful wait symbol and I could not interact with my PC. Fast forward 10-15 minutes, still no change. CTRL-ALT-DELETE worked kind of: it opened up after a few moments/minutes. From there I rebooted thinking that would fix it. Nope.
Eventually I got into the cycle where the desktop would load, fences would load, explorer would lock up, I'd click my mouse, explorer would crash and restart. I uninstalled fences, everything worked... except the icons. Reinstalled fences, same problem as before, crashing and whatnot. Uninstalled it again. And that's where I'm at currently.
I've attached a couple images, the first one shows the current state of the icons. Some have their icons, some don't. All are valid shortcuts. I'm a bad person and I have actual programs on my desktop and even those have the generic white page icon.
The second screenshot shows the file in its directory, with properties and change icon. No matter how many times I do that, nothing will change.
I've spent a couple hours googling and my first thought was it was the icon cache so I decided to nuke it (I found some instructions on these sites with copy/paste commands, it was so easy even a cave man could do it).
So I'm currently frustrated beyond all belief at my PC on a night when I just wanted to come home, watch some movies and play a couple games after an annoying day at work. Instead I spent all evening trying to fix this problem and getting no where. Woe is me?
I should add without Fences (and I removed all my other customization stuff and nuked anything that integrated with the right click shell thingy which I can't remember what it's called) my machine is running nice and smoothly (so far) aside from the icons.
I use 8 Pro Build 9200. When I boot, everything is normal. Then, after a while, usually a dozen minutes, whenever I open a folder in Explorer, no file icons will be shown, whatever the file type : I only get a blank generic rectangle instead of the proprer icon.
When this happens, I can be totally sure that any right-clicking on a file or a folder will result in the windows hanging indefinately. The only way out of this is to end the task through Task Manager.
The layout and folder options become unavailable as well.

I have Windows 8 pro + WMC 64-Bit installed on a laptop .. I have noticed sometimes when I right-click a file it just hangs with the circle spinning forever - I have to terminate explorer.exe and restart it - when i do all icons are blank - after a couple of attempts all shortcuts and favourites normally in left panel are gone
rebooting fixes it for a while - I dunno why but ive a sneaky feeling SLEEP plays a part, (due to past experiences too in other windows os's) ive noticed it really seems too happen if the laptop has been too sleep, ive noticed in past that problems seem to occur when one uses sleep or hibernate, its like the system becomes unstable? - i could be wrong, just I use sleep cos the power button is gone.
I am trying to be able to see CR2 files (RAW photo files from Canon) as thumbnail icons in Windows Explorer. I am using Windows 8.
Microsoft's codec pack (Download: Microsoft Camera Codec Pack - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details) does not work for Windows 8. When I am trying to install it, I get an error message mentioning that I can use Windows 8 Update function, but doesn't give any more information on how to do this exactly.
I installed 8.1 pro over my 8 pro installation with this file:
MICROSOFT.WINDOWS.8.1.RTM.X64.ENGLISH.DVD-WZT
When I click setup and use default key XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB it installs fine and reboots.
Then after reboot it asks again for key but when i type in it says We couldn't verify the product key. Please check your installation media.
I've tried a number of other keys and nothing works. What am I doing wrong?
I'm trying to get back up and running. It's a Toshiba laptop that came with Windows 8 with it, obviously UEFI and an embedded key.The person that was using it said it started to act up a week before it fully crashed. Afterwards, it wouldn't boot up, it would either BSOD with an error code I found pertaining to a graphics driver error, or stay on a blue screen with nothing on it and then restart and go through an endless Automatic Repair loop with no success. I check the logs and Windows checked EVERYTHING but couldn't find the issue why it wasn't booting. Did chkdsk, bootrec repair, offline sfc scan, STD scan, tried refresh/reset but the drive was apparently locked, couldn't do a system restore as there weren't any restore points, tried doing startup repair four times; nothing worked.
So I decided it would have to be wiped and reinstalled with 8.1. Thought it would be an easy process. I used the vbs script to show the OEM key to activate Windows once I was up and running with 8.1. OK, but for some reason the key looked familiar. Keyed in the key, it didn't work. So I wiped that hard drive with Windows 8.0, ran the vbs script, SAME key of Windows 8 Pro as before. Odd. I already tried converting the 8.1 Core OEM I previously installed to 8.1 Pro and tried that key, still nothing.
Then I checked the key on the interwebs, XKY4K-2NRWR-8F6P2-448RF-CRYQH, the reason why it looked so familiar is because it's a generic install key for Windows 8/8.1! This isn't the OEM key at all!
I deploy Windows with a custom 8.1 .wim image and have used this several times already and I THINK I might have that key used originally to install Windows into my virtual machine I have going for it. My thinking was that I might have used sysprep one too many times, but that doesn't explain why even with the plain Windows 8 AND 8.1 Core images why the key that's being detected is a generic install key.
I installed Windows 8 Pro 64bit RTM, but I can't find the "generic display driver" for standard 1280x800 resolution notebook displays. Even "Windows Update" doesn't offer one. I don't want 1024x768. Am I blind or WTF?
Windows 7 64bit has this generic display driver, everything is ok with Windows 7. Do I get my money back from Microsoft?
I own an Acer Predator gaming PC, and specifically, it has an American Megatrends UEFI BIOS which is presumably modded my Acer.
In the advanced settings, both ''System Shutdown Temp'' and ''CPU Shutdown Temp'' are off by default.
So as the overly cautious-verging-on-paranoid when it comes to melting circuit boards, I turned both on> Strangely it didn't let me customise the temps for system shut down (I know my Haswell chip for instance has safe operating temps well above 85c)
So, after switching both on, I ran a Prime95 torture test - I was monitoring my temps, and after about 3 or 4 minutes my CPU & Motherboard temps hit 72c. My system then shutdown. I turned off those BIOS settings as it seemed pointless for a system to shutdown at 72c. I can't specify the values for shutdown, it just goes with the lowest common denominator?
My last question is; if I leave these BIOS Settings off, will my Haswell chip/system shut itself down if the temps get too high anyway?
Suddenly when I restart Windows (8) it goes to the generic desktop and if I click on esc it then goes to my user name and I have to click on it to go to my desktop. It used to go to my user name and log in automatically (without me having to click on it) until a few days ago.how I can fix this and what could have caused it?
View 9 Replies View RelatedRecently, my laptop has run into a multitude of problems, but most of them have been solved by Dell. Today, I checked my device manager and I saw the yield symbol and an error on my monitor (called "Generic PnP Monitor), but nothing seems to be wrong with it as far as I know. I am thinking the driver may be out of date, but I am not sure. I have attached a few screenshots below to look at.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just purchased a acer V7-482PG-6662 ( Acer | Aspire V7 | V7-482PG-6662 | Overview ) and it comes with a 1080p display but the issue is that it wont go above 1366 x 768. This is right out of the box, i cant change to a higher resolution and all the drivers have been updated.
The Nvidia card works fine as it kicks in during gaming but even in games I cannot select a higher resoloution than 1366 x 768.
I even did a fresh install of windows 8 and windows 7 same issue. Device manager indicates "generic pnp display" under the monitor heading.
Others who have bought the laptop have not experienced this issue and their display is at 1080p.
EDIT: Tried a linux live usb and same issue, the resolution is only 1366 x 768, is this a hardware defect?
My Acer V5-571G has an awesome trackpad, but acer only provides Elantech drivers, which aren't as great.
This, is great: Synaptic Gesture Suite
but it refers you to your manufacturer for drivers.
After recently installing stardock suite with icon manager, i decided to uninstall the program and go back to just using rainmeter. After doing so, it seems like all my icons (programs and windows defaults) are one icon and corrupt.
Ive already done the following:
installed icon manager and restored windows defaults with no luck
rebuilt windows icon cache and thumb cache with no luck
restarted explorer.exe
This is frustrating to say the least and i really dont know why these methods dont work..
using windows 8.1 x64
So my question is about how to change an icon in Windows 8. All I've really seen is how to change icons of folders, and icons of file types, but is it possible to change a single file's icon?
For example, let's say I have a recorded .mp3. I want to change that .mp3's icon to something different than just the normal .mp3 icon one of these guys. Is it possible to change only the icon of one specific file?
After using Windows 8 for months now, I still have trouble recognizing certain apps right away. The reason icons work so well is it takes advantage of our in-built ability to recognize patterns. One look at an icon and we subconsciously know what it's for.
But a bunch of squares and rectangles...
I pointed this out to some people when the MS released the beta of Windows 8. And I honestly thought I'd eventually get use to it. But months after, I still have to focus a little more just to know which tile to press for what.
As you can see next to the date the programs arent being grouped into that little box where you click the arrow for some reason.

I have received a new laptop from HP to replace my original purchase which turned out to have a defective keyboard. I am in the process of clearing my personal info/history from the defective computer before returning it to HP.
I have deleted all my files and have uninstalled all the programs that I installed. I also deleted the items shown in the "Desktop" directory (which were the shortcuts I created). That may have been a mistake because now I am attempting to clear the shortcut icons from the desktop, with no success! Since the files to which the shortcuts pointed have been deleted, I get a message telling me the file is no longer located in the "Desktop" directory (no kidding, I deleted it!). I can't delete them or even rename them or delete their names. I realize now that I should have deleted the shortcut icons before clearing the "Desktop" directory.
These shortcuts don't link to anything, but because their names give an indication of my personal interests, I would prefer to have them removed. I could reformat the drive, but I assume HP would like to get the machine back complete with all files that they originally supplied with it. I really don't want to do a restore and start over clearing my info.
The logon screen on my computer is not showing the icons for switch user, power, ease access, etc. The only thing I've done recently is uninstalled some fonts. Thinking this may have caused the problem, I reinstalled them but I'm still having this problem.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI just got a new laptop with Windows 8 and upgraded to Windows 8.1.
I don't like seeing my desktop icons, so I did right click on desktop -> View -> Show desktop icons so that they disappear. They're gone, but every time I restart my laptop, they appear again.
I'd like to solve the problem correctly without just deleting all of my desktop icons.
So I have limited experience in computers. I recently had to download some images for a class and after I did so I noticed that I could no longer right click on any icons or folders without my mouse pointer turning into an hour glass, then my screen going black and restarting.
I've done virus and mal-ware scans and everything came back in the clear. I'm running windows 8 or 8.1 also.
i noticed this bug long time ago, but now i decided to try to solve it, because i will be using this os for long time now. When i try to delete files or something, and when i get a windows to confirm my actions, there is a big icon on the left side, and that icon has a black line on it, how to remove it ? It doesnt matter which icon will be there, it will have this black like on its left side.
Intel haswell graphics, core i7 cpu, everything works good, no files corruption or anything else. For many reasons i have installed windows 8/8.1 over 10 times, and all the time i get this broken icon bug...
I upgraded to Windows 8,double clicked the windows.old folder to get files from old computer, now there are ICONS all over the screen and I can't delete some of them or programs won't work.
View 8 Replies View Related I am trying to display my desktop icons as a list. Note: I am using the "Windows 8" app (the add-on start button).
Windows 8 does not offer this setting, but there is an app: [url].....
However, everytime I reboot, my carefully sorted list icons are re-organized into one column on the left.
I'm a little confused by 2 changes on 8.
1.- I use colored folders on my Favorites bar. Couple weeks ago the reverted back to default Windows folders. No problem.
2.- Turned pc on today and colored folders are back. Cool and still no problem.
3.- animated icons here are not animated anymore. Not just with IE 10 but slimbrowser too.
