View 9 RepliesWindows 8 start screen adds 2 new columns when I add 2 items to a block of programs.
I end up with all these categories that have 2 or 3 icons off to the side when one new column would do it in a much more compact format. Some categories could be only one column but it still insists on using 2.
Am I missing something some place in the settings or something?
I wanted to post a screenshot but none of my screen capture software seems to work in Metro.
Snipping tool, Camstudio, and Fraps all close the Metro screen as soon as I activate them.
The .jpg icons in Windows Explorer no longer show the picture but a "generic" scene. How to get the pictures back?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have checked in the only two places I was aware of that would cause this:
Folder Options - View ....however, there is no option there to check show Thumbnails. I believe this option should be there at the top, but it isnt.
I also went to Properties of My Computer, Advanced, Performance. It is checked there to show Thumbnails.
But for whatever reason, I only see icons when I should see thumbnails. And yes, I have changed the view to Medium, large, extra large.
I'm trying to find a way to make icons of images in Explorer larger than the "extra large" option. I don't see the slider in Win 8 Explorer to do that. Is there something else that could be done to size the icons to what I want them to be?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am running Win 8.1 upgraded from 8. Every now and then all the icons on my taskbar start to disappear and it loses all functionality I can not click the start menu button or right click the taskbar.
I have to restart the process to get them back which doesn't worry me that much as I have written a program that makes it 2 clicks to restart it.
My desktop icons are still fine and my desktop wallpaper slide show still works, also I don't see anything regarding this in my event logs.
Basically my icons are fubar! :
More detail:
Current Setup/programs that affected this issue:
RDP
Stardock Fences 2
Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition
Basically I RDPed into my home PC, tried to play some Street Fighter 4. Things worked, all was happy, and the Gods rejoiced. Until I returned home. Upon trying to log into my PC the desktop showed only partially complete (by this I mean the icons were there but they were in the process of moving to the "fence"). Explorer gave me the wonderful wait symbol and I could not interact with my PC. Fast forward 10-15 minutes, still no change. CTRL-ALT-DELETE worked kind of: it opened up after a few moments/minutes. From there I rebooted thinking that would fix it. Nope.
Eventually I got into the cycle where the desktop would load, fences would load, explorer would lock up, I'd click my mouse, explorer would crash and restart. I uninstalled fences, everything worked... except the icons. Reinstalled fences, same problem as before, crashing and whatnot. Uninstalled it again. And that's where I'm at currently.
I've attached a couple images, the first one shows the current state of the icons. Some have their icons, some don't. All are valid shortcuts. I'm a bad person and I have actual programs on my desktop and even those have the generic white page icon.
The second screenshot shows the file in its directory, with properties and change icon. No matter how many times I do that, nothing will change.
I've spent a couple hours googling and my first thought was it was the icon cache so I decided to nuke it (I found some instructions on these sites with copy/paste commands, it was so easy even a cave man could do it).
So I'm currently frustrated beyond all belief at my PC on a night when I just wanted to come home, watch some movies and play a couple games after an annoying day at work. Instead I spent all evening trying to fix this problem and getting no where. Woe is me?
I should add without Fences (and I removed all my other customization stuff and nuked anything that integrated with the right click shell thingy which I can't remember what it's called) my machine is running nice and smoothly (so far) aside from the icons.
The icon images on the app screen are specific to the website they link to, but when I pin them to the Start menu, many of them become the generic "e" for explorer icons. They do retain the name of the website, which is okay, but if I change the size to "small", I am left with a bunch of similar-looking icons.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI use 8 Pro Build 9200. When I boot, everything is normal. Then, after a while, usually a dozen minutes, whenever I open a folder in Explorer, no file icons will be shown, whatever the file type : I only get a blank generic rectangle instead of the proprer icon.
When this happens, I can be totally sure that any right-clicking on a file or a folder will result in the windows hanging indefinately. The only way out of this is to end the task through Task Manager.
The layout and folder options become unavailable as well.

I much prefer the "list view" in my folders but I don't see way to add "columns" to list view. The only folder view showing these sort tabs is "details" view. Can anything be done about this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have Windows 8 pro + WMC 64-Bit installed on a laptop .. I have noticed sometimes when I right-click a file it just hangs with the circle spinning forever - I have to terminate explorer.exe and restart it - when i do all icons are blank - after a couple of attempts all shortcuts and favourites normally in left panel are gone
rebooting fixes it for a while - I dunno why but ive a sneaky feeling SLEEP plays a part, (due to past experiences too in other windows os's) ive noticed it really seems too happen if the laptop has been too sleep, ive noticed in past that problems seem to occur when one uses sleep or hibernate, its like the system becomes unstable? - i could be wrong, just I use sleep cos the power button is gone.
I am trying to be able to see CR2 files (RAW photo files from Canon) as thumbnail icons in Windows Explorer. I am using Windows 8.
Microsoft's codec pack (Download: Microsoft Camera Codec Pack - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details) does not work for Windows 8. When I am trying to install it, I get an error message mentioning that I can use Windows 8 Update function, but doesn't give any more information on how to do this exactly.
i love portable .paf apps and pretty much download all i can find that i "might" use one day. every time i try to enter the folder i keep them in, explorer goes into the not responding state like it is indexing all the files, or scanning them for some reason. i have defender off, do not use any software based firewall or any real time antivirus scanner at all. the process to enter the folder takes over a minute and every time i restart my system the same thing happens again. as long as i dont shut down then it is instantly accessible like all other folders on all my other hdds including the same hdd that the folder is on. it only seems to happen with the .paf files.
the folder is only 409 files at slightly over 5gb.
I have a directory in which I have a large number of genealogical records, 756 to be exact. The files are numbered FIN_1881_001_001 to FIN_1881_001_756.
Due to an error when saving these files, I need to change these 756 file numbers to FIN_1891_001_001 to FIN_1891_001_756.
Is there any easy way of doing this without having to change each file name individually.
I have a small 64Gb SSD boot drive C:
I installed Windows ADK to enable EasusToDo imaging software to create a boot disk.
This has left 3 folders about 3Gb in size in my c:usersmeappdatalocal emp folder
I have therefore very little free space left on the C drive.
The folder attributes are read only.
I as an administrator user have full access rights (confirmed in folder Properties) but when I try to delete the folders the error message asks for permission from me to delete. I give this permission, then it refuses, stating Try Again as it need permission from me.
This computer does not recognise boot CDs even though the BIOS order is set correctly. I was hoping to remove files using an Ubuntu live boot CD.
Windows Disk Cleanup utility just stalls - presumably it also cannot delete these files.
It seems as if my computer is using way too much RAM for some reason. I currently have 6GB of RAM installed. As soon as I start my computer up, I'm greeted with this warning:
So I decided to open up task manager and see exactly how much RAM I'm really using:
No process is using up any amount of RAM to come close the above number. The most RAM using is 70mb or so from Google Chrome while typing this post. Clicking on the performance tab of task manager gives me this information:
I haven't downloaded anything recently. I had this exact problem a few weeks ago and a system restore fixed it but I'm not wanting to wait on the computer to restore again or for this problem to just come back again. I'm running Windows 8 on a Toshiba Satellite L875D-S7332.
How come Enable Large System Cache is disabled by default?, why is it disabled by default on both Windows 7 and 8? and should one enable it on these new CPUs? does it have any benefits?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy computer started freezing while downloading large files in uTorrent, About 10 minutes after starting uTorrent the PC starts to be really really slow and 1 minute after it freezes, only restarted/shutdown solve the problem, I've been using uTorrent for years and never had this problem, I mean it happens when I download a 15GB movie, but two months ago I downloaded a 170GB TV series and no problems were with that.
So I thought maybe its a problem in the HDD (not in the space, I have aprox. 150GB free in C and 220GB in D), I don't really know what to do.
Recently I've encountered a problem whilst trying to clean up my HDD (it was filling up way too quickly and I wanted to get rid of some unwanted games/programs), and I noticed a problem with file sizes of even small programs.
For a start, I am a massive FSX simmer, so that's why there's so many FSX addons in my screenshots.
Anyway, I use "iOBit System Care 6 Ultimate" to clean up my laptop, and I was trying to use the inbuilt uninstaller to get rid of some programs. This is what happened:
Now, I know that all those programs DO NOT take up that much HDD space, considering the hard drive in this laptop is currently only 500GB. I can almost guarantee those programs DO NOT take up those huge amounts because 1: They are reasonably small addons and 2: Because on my old laptop, they never took up that much space.
So I also tried Revo Uninstaller, and this was the result:
Now, notice the top result? The "Carenado Cessna Skylane HD Series FSX"? Well, that's DEFINITELY not 50GB, that's 100% wrong in all fronts. I took a screenshot to prove so:
Yeah, that's TOTALLY 50GB right there
So, last but not least, here's my HDD space/free space:
Note that only the "Windows C: and Recovery Drive F:" are part of the HDD, the other partitions are part of my external 1TB HDD.
Weirdest part is that, the files DON'T take up that much space when I right click - properties in Windows Explorer. Now, I'm not sure what's the go but it's definitely odd. I can't get legitimate sizes from neither Revo or iOBit, and it's really annoying.
Also, programs like "Alan Wake" and "Adobe Master Collection Creative Suite 6" show up as the normal file size, yet ANY Flight Simulator X addon shows up as a huge amount?
I’m running VS2012 on a Windows8 64-bit computer. After running the VS2012 update (I started it from within VS and then closed VS) I went to the Start Screen and the icon in the VS2012 tile is now a white square. I unpinned it from the start screen. I typed in "Visual" and found the tile. It had the correct icon on the tile. When I select to pin it to the Start Screen, it still shows a white square instead of the VS icon.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIs there a app or a website or something that can send large files?
So I have about a dozen files that I want to send to a friend in another state. Ranging from about 100 MB to 5 GB. The total of all the files together is roughly 26 GB. One Drive won't let me upload anything over 4 GB. Plus it takes forever.
What I can use to send all these files?
I was looking into this. I don't know how good it is though: Firedrive | Free Cloud Storage for Everyone
I delete a lot of programs and yet disk space is still 75% full. Why after dumping so many programs does that happen?
View 2 Replies View RelatedThought this was problem - Microsoft writes "When you resume a computer from sleep or from hibernation, the SATA hard disk drivers require the SATA hard disks to be ready within 10 seconds. However, a large SATA hard disk may take longer than 10 seconds to be ready. In this situation, the resume operation times out." in their fix for W7 - You receive various Stop error messages in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 when you try to resume a computer that has a large SATA hard disk
Have tried a variety of things like checking all current drivers, turning off hybrid sleep, power troubleshooter, windows update and the like on instruction but my ASUS p7p55d-e doesn't seem to have any Windows 8 specific drivers.

Is it possible to rotate a large tile on the start page 90 degrees to form a vertical tile so i can add a vertical photo.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter recently installing stardock suite with icon manager, i decided to uninstall the program and go back to just using rainmeter. After doing so, it seems like all my icons (programs and windows defaults) are one icon and corrupt.
Ive already done the following:
installed icon manager and restored windows defaults with no luck
rebuilt windows icon cache and thumb cache with no luck
restarted explorer.exe
This is frustrating to say the least and i really dont know why these methods dont work..
using windows 8.1 x64
So my question is about how to change an icon in Windows 8. All I've really seen is how to change icons of folders, and icons of file types, but is it possible to change a single file's icon?
For example, let's say I have a recorded .mp3. I want to change that .mp3's icon to something different than just the normal .mp3 icon one of these guys. Is it possible to change only the icon of one specific file?
After using Windows 8 for months now, I still have trouble recognizing certain apps right away. The reason icons work so well is it takes advantage of our in-built ability to recognize patterns. One look at an icon and we subconsciously know what it's for.
But a bunch of squares and rectangles...
I pointed this out to some people when the MS released the beta of Windows 8. And I honestly thought I'd eventually get use to it. But months after, I still have to focus a little more just to know which tile to press for what.
As you can see next to the date the programs arent being grouped into that little box where you click the arrow for some reason.

I have received a new laptop from HP to replace my original purchase which turned out to have a defective keyboard. I am in the process of clearing my personal info/history from the defective computer before returning it to HP.
I have deleted all my files and have uninstalled all the programs that I installed. I also deleted the items shown in the "Desktop" directory (which were the shortcuts I created). That may have been a mistake because now I am attempting to clear the shortcut icons from the desktop, with no success! Since the files to which the shortcuts pointed have been deleted, I get a message telling me the file is no longer located in the "Desktop" directory (no kidding, I deleted it!). I can't delete them or even rename them or delete their names. I realize now that I should have deleted the shortcut icons before clearing the "Desktop" directory.
These shortcuts don't link to anything, but because their names give an indication of my personal interests, I would prefer to have them removed. I could reformat the drive, but I assume HP would like to get the machine back complete with all files that they originally supplied with it. I really don't want to do a restore and start over clearing my info.
The logon screen on my computer is not showing the icons for switch user, power, ease access, etc. The only thing I've done recently is uninstalled some fonts. Thinking this may have caused the problem, I reinstalled them but I'm still having this problem.
