Aug 26, 2013
I have 4gb of ram in my desktop computer and have noticed that when I am on the internet, listening to music in the background and the mail app is open. I am using about 40% of ram, which seems a lot.
how much ram should someone have when using windows 8 64bit?
how much ram do you have in your Windows 8 or 8.1 computer?

I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 64-Bit on it and I uninstalled AsusDVD after having some issues with it. After I did this my laptop no longer allowed me to play DVDs. Despite having Windows Media Player, which I know plays DVDs since I have it on my desktop.
Is there a way that I can change some settings to use Windows Media Player? When I open "Autoplay" Windows Media Player is not an option to play it on and there isn't anything else on my laptop that can play it. I tried a few different free DVD players, but none were able to play them for some reason.
How I can get Windows Media Player to play DVDs or suggest a free software that I can download that will play DVDs?

I have just bought a diskless XPS1645 and have clean-installed Win8.1. All is well, apart from...
1. Device Manager shows two Base System Devices that remain 'undriven' - what the items may be and what drivers are required?
2. The volume and DVD eject buttons don't. (The Wireless button definitely does.)

I wish to upgrade my pc from Windows 7 Home Premium 64 to Windows 8 Professional 64.
I have purchased and received the Windows 8 Professional (Upgrade Edition) 32/64 DVDs.
Do I need to disable Norton Internet Security (NIS) 2013, before I proceed with the upgrade (Keeping all apps, settings, and files) ?
Would I need to reinstall NIS 2013 after upgrade is completed ?
How long (on average) am I looking for the upgrade to fully complete from start to finish ?
And finally, does everything transfer successfully (as I'll be using the 'Keep all apps, settings, and files' option) ?

Previous summer I upgraded my computer to a more up to date with 8GB RAM. Inevitably, I had to backup my data and install 64-bit version of Windows 7. I could install and use most of my devices, except an old Pinnacle Studio Pro analogue TV tuner PCI card. After some search, I managed to find custom 64-bit drivers fot BT848/BT878 cards and instructions of how to sign them, so I could use them in normal mode. After following the instructions the drivers worked fine in Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit! OK, the original application Pinnacle Vision didn't work since it looks exclusively for Pinnacle's own 32-bit driver, but I could use the card in Nero Vision, Pinnacle Studio Pro, VirtualDub etc.
How did the problem arised: I recently upgraded the computer to Windows 8 and then to 8.1 so I have the latest version. Some devices were replaced with Microsoft drivers and others were not installed. I downloaded latest OEM drivers and managed to make all devices work at their full potential again, except the Pinnacle TV tuner. I went to advanced startup options and loaded Windows 8.1 in the mode that ignores driver signature.
I then attempted to manually install the custom BT848 64-bit drivers from Device Manager, since there was no setup program. As you may know, the card appears as two devices in Device Manager. One for the video part and one for the audio part. The audio part completed sucessfully. But the video part displayed the message "Error 39: file not found". The same driver worked OK in Windows 7, so the missing files should be Windows 7 system files that are not present in Windows 8. Is there any way to see which files are these so I can copy them from a Windows 7 installation? How I can determine which file was not found when I see error 39? Is there a log file or what?

I did a very successful overclock, taking my processor from 3.3 Ghz to 4.7 Ghz. I can verify that in CPU-Z but it's not showing up in Windows Systems properties. What do I have to do for Windows to recognize the overclock?

For the past few weeks I have been getting this weird occurrence every time I try to install & update my Windows 8.1 64x-based System. No matter what update it is (except for the security updates) I get a black screen whenever i reset my computer and log back in. The mouse just shows up periodically and seems to be loading something; based on the fact that the loading cursor is being shown. I've waited hours before and nothing shows up. Only way to get my computer back to working order is by loading a system restore point.
P.S. I should also note that a white computer icon shows on the bottom left of my screen after updating as well. It comes and goes just like my cursor.

I have 3 RAID systems;
1. 2x HDD's Internals, in Simple Mode.
2. 4x HDD's Externals, in Spanned Mode.
3. 3x HDD's Externals, in Spanned Mode.
( 2 & 3; In MediaSonic enclosure, eSata Cable with PCI-Express )
I want to format my PC with clean install,
the problem is that all these RAID's are SoftWare & the HDD's are DYNAMIC.
will i be able to use this RAID's normally after the format?
Or i need to break all RAID's, then make it again with the newly installed windows? & HOW?!
PS: my windows 8.1 Pro is on separate SSD.

How to get older O/S's like Windows 95, 98 and ME running on VirtualBox on Windows 8, I used to be able to run all Operating Systems when I had my Vista set up. Strangely I can install and run DOS and Win 3.1 but not Win 95, Win 98 and Win ME. Anything from XP works fine.

test the Refs file system -- it won't yet be available on the boot system but will be on other volumes.
This will mean a change in your backup strategy if you back up disks by Imaging partitions. It will be a while yet before the standard backup vendors build this new file system into their backups - but whatever the change of data format in the partition layout you should still always be able to backup if you select "Backup by SECTOR" mode - as this mode simply copies byte for byte exactly what is on the disk without regard to data organisation whatever - it's a pure physical address sector by sector copy. It will probably take longer but it should always work.
(Although I'll be running this on a VM which can be backed up in other ways - I want to try the actual sector by sector backup from the Guest machine).
In theory though as most backup solutions are Linux based any sort of Windows file systems are just DATA as far as Linux itself is concerned - however sometimes these utilities do a bit of data compression and optimisation which requires knowing details of the SOURCE file system - usually FAT / FAT32 / NTFS. This could cause problems with the new Refs file system so I'd go for the physical sector by sector dump.
In any case while I'm sure we are all waiting to test the new file system - don't rely on it on any machine until your BACKUP and RESTORE strategy works.

I have an HP Envy with a recovery partition. I did indeed create a dedicated USB drive that copied the recovery partition from the partition on the hard drive that shipped with the unit.
I wanted to create a restore registry type of system repair disk as you could in Windows 7. However even though I read that the option should appear in the Recovery Options that says: Create a Systems Repair Disk with a CD or DVD (see System Repair Disc - Create in Windows 8), that option never appears.
While I do have Acronis as a backup I would like a quick bootable CD/DVD that offers a registry restore option. But perhaps that is what the recovery partition is for and when the time comes it will offer me that option, not sure (????).
Or may be there is a separate .iso I can downlaod and burn like I did for Win 7 32 bit and 64 bit.

Just upgraded my gfx card from a nvidia 560 gtx to a nvidia 670, and my PC is taking like 1 minute to boot now. It used to be like 15 seconds..
Specs:
Windows 8 Pro 64bit
i5 3570K @ 4.4ghz
nvidia 670
8GB RAM 1600mhz
samsung 840 SSD 256gb
seagate barracuda 500gb
650w ocz PSU
Z77 D3H motherboard
Tried:
remove the old gfx drivers last night, using driver sweeper, cleaned the registry etc, but it hanged on post [where you see your motherboards bios logo and what keys to press etc] for the first time with the new card in, downloaded the gfx drivers for it and it still hangs on post after install.
Tried playing a couple of games that are on my SSD and on my HDD and performance is perfect.
Loaded up samsung SSD magician and 'optmized' the ssd and benchmarked, 550 read 250 write speed.
Tried my USB and PS/2 keyboard, doesn't register keys to get into BIOS, so can't flash it.
Tried unplugging all USB devices and still hanging on post, takes a good minute or 2.
Also checked my C: drive with the OS on using error checking and it found none.
Not long reinstalled windows 8 either...

I recently reinstalled Windows 8.1 and noticed this white box around a tile or setting when I hover over it. It's like accessiblity or something but I didn't change any settings than what I usually do. This has never happened on any older Installations before. I think it may have imported a setting from my Microsoft account but I'm not sure. How do I remove these "autofocus" selection borders from the Windows 8.1/8 tile screen?

I've recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1, but for some reason it installed Windows 8.1 32-bit, instead of the 64 bit version. I've left it this way for a week or so but some of the applications I use need to be 64 bit.
Basically, how do I upgrade to a 64 bit version of Windows 8.1?

What has happened is that when I first started up my laptop this morning, it seems the audio is disabled. Along with this, the wireless connection is also disabled. Windows attempts to fix both of these problems, but only fixes the wireless. I've restarted multiple times to no avail, and each time, the wireless connection must be fixed by Windows. I've had this laptop for about a month, nothing has ever gone wrong.
when I go on Youtube, every video I attempt to watch stutters around for the first few seconds and/or goes directly to an error screen. I'm sure this has to be something with flash or something in general, considering it just started occurring with these other problems. I'm hoping I won't have to backup files and restore the laptop to the factory default, I was an idiot and deleted the only system restore point I had from a few days ago. I completely forgot system restore points only effect installed programs and Windows files.
Here is some more specific information towards my audio problem -
This is what happens when I attempt to start Windows Audio in Services.

This may be related to the recent Windows update.
Just recently, I noticed that, sometimes, I had to click an application twice to start it.
At first, I attributed it to typos, but when it happened quite a few times, I investigated.
I saw that Task Manager showed the application running, but there was no window on the desktop.
The application doesn't matter and it's not easily reproducible - happens once or twice a day at random.
Odd.
I'll be a bit more vigilant now that I noticed it and see if I can track it down better (32-bit or 64-bit apps, for example). The last one was a 32-bit application. And I started two applications in rapid succession.
(I'm on 64-bit 8.1).

I have my laptop connected to an external monitor with HDMI. The laptop is always plugged into the A/C,and its cover is always closed, so it's used as a desktop computer.
I have noticed that the monitor often turns off very quickly, sometimes after only a few minutes of idle time. This is extremely annoying, and I don't know how to fix it. In Power Options, the "Turn off display after" setting is set to 10 minutes on battery and 30 minutes when plugged in.
I am running Windows 8.1 64-bit.

The computer is a mix of new and old bits from an other computer i used...
CPU - Intel 750 2.66ghz - old
Motherboard - Gigabyte GA-P55M-UD2 - old
Memory - 8gb - old
Hard drive - Seagate 350gb - New
Graphics Card - Nvidia GF210 - New
Don't understand why it won't install windows cos part of this computer worked fine and now something is wrong even though hasn't been used for a few months.

I just installed Windows 8, everything was fine. Until I opened up Steam and launched a game. Every game that I launched using Steam did not load, it just froze and has a black screen then becomes Not Responding, so I had to End Task it. But if I launched the game by itself (without turning on Steam), then the game works fine.
I tried everything from reinstalling Steam, reinstalling the games, Verify game file cache, etc. None has worked so far.
I also tried all the latest Nvidia drivers from 326.80 Beta to those older ones.
My system spec:
Windows 8 Pro 64bit
i7 2600k
Asus Sabertooth Z77
Kingston 8gb Ram

Today I purchased a Dell Inspiron 3000 series laptop, running Windows 8.1 Update 1 64-bit. However, whenever I shut down or reboot, I get a BSOD with the error, DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. Strangely, it only occurs when I am running on battery power, and after the up time of the machine is 7 minutes. If it's plugged into AC then I don't have any issues.
The minidump shows that the problem seems to be caused by NTOSKRNL.exe.
