Hardware Drivers :: How To Check Speed On USB Port
Jan 2, 2014
I do not want to check the speed on a USB 3.0 flash drive or external drive. I need to know the speed of the port itself is transferring at full 3.0 capacity.
What I have is an external mechanical USB 3.0 hard drive. I know it's a 7200 rpm drive. My 3.0 USB ports on my laptop are not using the blue USB plastic to denote 3.0 speeds, they use black plastic.
Therefore I am not confidant they are running at full 3.0 speeds. I want a tool that will measure the port speeds independently of any drive or device on the USB port.
I did find this but I do not have any Advanced tab to check for or to reset the device to Super
There are four USB specs: 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, and 3.0. But to confuse things, each USB spec has more than one data rate assigned to it. Those rates are "low", "full", "high", and "super."
Therefore, benchmarking data throughput solely on speed is not necessarily conclusive as to what the actual spec being used. Thus, a USB 3.0 port may not be actually running at a "super" rating but at a "High" rating instead.
On a Windows machine, check the data rating of the USB root/hub - Goto: Device Manager --> USB Controllers --> USB Root Hub (Right Click) --> Properties --> Advanced (Tab).
It should tell you the data rating for the USB hub/port. Once you know that, you'll know the maximum throughput from the computer's POV.
Low = 1.5 Mbps Full = 12 Mbps High = 480 Mbps Super = 5 Gbps
Windows - Verifying USB connection speed (USB 3 or USB 2?) - Super User
Here is what the listing looks like in device manager Under the two 3.0 USB hubs at the top, there is no advanced tab.

My ISP provides secure imap access to my email accounts hosted on their servers. Recently, my company blocked port 993 (imap ssl) - however, port 443 remains open (https). At my home router, I can forward port 443 to my Windows 8 64-bit machine. I'm looking for a program that will redirect traffic inbound on port 443, outbound on 993 to my ISP's email server so I can use imap at work.
Is this something that can be natively done, and if not, is there such a program? It looks like there is something called PassPort for XP that might do it (PassPort port forwarding utility Win XP | Free System Administration software downloads at SourceForge.net), but I was wondering if there was something better.

I am having trouble with my USB 3.0 port.Whenever I plug anything (usb, mouse, portable hard drive etc) into that particular port, "Client Server Runtime Process" would use 100% of the CPU. However, when plugged into the USB 2.0, all seems to be fine.

I'm trying to connect my SSD to USB3.0 using an "adapter cable" (2.5" SATA HDD to USB 3.0)
The connection is however "unstable" going on/off/on/off in my Disk Management. Switching to USB 2 , the instability vanish
Searching this forum I see others having problems with their USB 3.0 as well , so I have:
- Adjusted the advanced power settings
- Disabled Fast Startup
- Disabled USB selective suspend setting
The instability has improved, but not been resolved.I have not checked the speed on the USB but I strongly suspect, I only get USB 2 speed (as many others describe)
As the USB 3.0 is on the left side of my Acer V5 (OEM Windows 8.1) and both of the USB 2.0 ports are on the right () , I'm not able to make use of any Y-cable either ..... I do not know if my USB 3.0 is 150mA or 900mA , however I have a strong suspicion .
So at the moment I only have no USB 3.0 functionality

I got a new mouse a couple of days back, it's one of those fancy Razer mouses with 12 buttons on the side that is used for gaming and stuff. I have an issue when I try to use usb 3.0 instead of 2.0 ports. ( my tower only has like 2 2.0 ports so I try to use those for other things ) I am trying not to buy a usb hub before somebody says it
On games ( fullscreen or Windowed ) quickslot controls where you can use the numbers on your mouse I can't use the 3.0 port as it won't recognize the side buttons but it will on the 2.0 port.
I am guessing this is a driver problem but I am unsure. Neither the native mouse driver for Windows nor the fancy Cloud Synapse driver 2.0 works.

How do I change the Com port for my modem in Windows 8? When I google around the instructions say to reinstall the modem, but I just installed it and it has the wrong port. It seems to default to Com 1 and my modem is on Com 4. So, how do I change the modem com port from Com 1 to Com 4? If Microsoft provided no method of changing it (incredible if true) then where is it stored -- registry, ini file, etc.?

How do you turn your microphone port or line in, to a headphone port or line out port. For a while I would plug in headphones into the mic port and it would bring up a dialog saying I could change it to another headphone port but it never worked. Now it doesn't even pop up. I want this so when I go on long trips my girlfriend and I could watch a movie together using 2 pairs of headphones.

why it is that I have trouble browsing in high speed despite the fact that the wireless adapter receives data at 1 Mbps minimum? I haven't been able to watch videos on Youtube, read the news etc because the browser takes ages to load the full page. I checked which applications are connected and they haven't exchanged much data as you can see below:

I noticed that when i manually set my memory to 2133 mhz (as instructed by gskill, since my memory is 2133 but if i don't change it there it will be 1600), my cpu temps go like 5-8 C higher. Is this normal? Is there a correlation between ram performance and cpu heat?

I am using a gaming mouse which has a maximum setting of 3200 DPI. I have it set to 3200 DPI. The game I am playing has a slider to adjust mouse sensitivity and that slider is maxed out. With that said, the sensitivity/speed is still too slow for my liking.
Is there anyway that I can speed up the mouse sensitivity/speed in game.

After spending a lot of time isolating the specific update that was giving me the extremely slow reboot time, (from 5 seconds to 150 seconds after update) I was able to determine that Windows optional update -Qualcomm Atheroos Communication - Bluetooth Controller - Qualcomm Atheros AR3012 Bluetooth 4.0 + HS was the cause of the lag.
Any solution to the lag. from 5 seconds to nearly 3 minutes is a substantial lag in restarting the computer.
The computer is a MSI GS70 229US.

There is 3 hdd's installed to my rig:
1 is 55gb kingston ssd where i run my windows
2 is 1tb hitachi where i keep my games and other junk
3 is seagates 250gb laptop hdd.
The main problem was that sometimes when opening or just clicking some folders freezes the file explorer and it crashes after it, so i tought to format the second hdd to make it work better now it seems work ok except for moving files from hdd to another.
When copying the copy speed just at random point drops to 0% and leaves the hdd 3 to hang 100% and the hdd 2 is dropping to 0%.
What i have tried:
I ran hdd regenerator and 18 bad sectors were fixed Also tried to change sata ports That's not much but can't figure anythin else for now and i am starting to suspect that my hdd is gone bad :/ also when downloading ~100mb file from internet it makes same thing but i don't know is it same problem...

This issue has been an ongoing one about close to a year after i purchased my PC. It is an ASUS PC when i go to the support site for updates in the past and now for my model i see BIOS updates.
Lately they have been all CAP Bios's,any time i try to use these type of BIOS's it is not recognized in the BIOS utility in the BIOS screen.
My last BIOS update was a ROM BIOS it worked fine, now all the future BIOS updates on ASUS's site are CAP.
If I try to rename the BIOS to a ROM i get an error "image integrity check failed". Of course i have spoken to ASUS Support in the past and now over the phone also, but no luck.
I do know it can be risky updating a BIOS if anything goes wrong the PC will become unstable or unusable.
Most will say unless there is not something in the BIOS update that will make improvements to the PC.
It has been 4 or so BIOS updates since one i have on this PC so far on ASUS's site.
I believe my motherboard is not compatible with a CAP BIOS, but why ASUS lists them for my PC.

How to boost the read/ write speed of my Hard Disk Drive. Someone told me about some innovation in Windows 8 such as Superfetch, Prefetch, Ready Boost, etc - something that is supposedly utilizing the idle capacity of your RAM/ SSD to boost the read/ write speed in the Hard Disk Drive.
Currently, my laptop is setup as follows;
120GB C Drive: running on SSD - has the Windows 8 and all apps installed in it,
500GB D Drive: has all the Libraries folders installed in it.
RAM = 4GB. PLanning to increase it by an additional 4GB.
Hence, how can i use the SSD or RAM to improve on the Hard Disk read/ write speed? Currently, my Intel SSD toolbox is showing as follows:
Question is how do we know if Superfetch / Prefetch is enabled based on the printscreen shown above? It just show that the feature is optimised.
By the way, can we transfer the following folders from C Drive to D Drive? Will it affect the computer performance?

I built a computer recently. Since day one I get BSODs but the drivers, and Bug/Checks listed are never the same.I was thinking it couldn't be a single device or driver so I've:
Replaced the MOBO.
Repair Installed the OS.
Replaced the RAM.
It BSOD'd multiple times between each change.
The only things I've run are IE/FF and Ableton Live 9. Ableton is usually running during the BSOD but it was not the last time.

I don't want necessarily to remove SKyDrive but it annoys the hell out of me when my files go to it and not to Documents which is where I want them. I do not know how to stop Skydrive being the first port of call for all my saved files or how to replace it with the good old fashioned Documents File. I am sure I am not alone in thinking that the Microsoft techies did a lousy job trying to better Win7 with this appalling Windows 8.1. I am about to buy a new laptop but what was once a real pleasure is now going to be a pain in the neck to have to get a new laptop with Windows 8 on it.

just noticed my Vaio ethernet port isn't working. it says the adaptor is working normally, but when I plug in an ethernet cable is says the cable is not plugged in. I tried it with two different cables that work elsewhere.
I wonder if the laptop ethernet card is faulty? Wireless is working fine.
I only ever use it to hard connect the router during setup, so it could have been out of order even before my Win7 to 8.1 upgrade.

I've been having an issue with my Acer S7-391. I bought the Windows 8 machine in December, and the majority of the time when I start it up in the morning, it doesn't boot properly - it hangs on a black screen for ages. I then have to hit the off button and boot it back up again and, sometimes, it boots after having to go through a system repair. Also, sometimes it does boot properly from the get-go without having to jump through hoops - not often though.
Originally I thought it was an issue with me having upgraded to Windows 8.1 shortly after buying the laptop, but having rolled the machine back to Windows 8, the issue prevailed. Through trial and error, though, I've figured out when it does and when it doesn't boot properly (yeah, I'm slow). Basically, it never boots properly when I have a USB mouse/keyboard plugged in. I take them out, boot the machine, and can plug them in again almost immediately and everything works fine. But NEVER does it boot with these devices plugged in from the start.
Here's a photo of it anyway (below).
Any solution here - other than unplugging my USB peripherals on boot - t'

How do I change the USB port that Windows to Go listens the drive while in use?
I have this computer, with an Asus P8H61-LE Motherboard. As you expect, it doesn't pack USB 3.0 ports. But it does come with some nifty PCI-E x1 slots, so I've bought a random USB 3.0 PCI-E card, with 40 pin for front panel.
Works amazingly. Fast and beautiful, exactly what I've expected. BUT, it doesn't have its own BIOS or something, so my UEFI BIOS cannot boot from devices connected to it. In fact, it doesn't even detect anything there until I boot up to the O.S.!
And I have this Windows to Go Setup. Works like a charm on USB 2.0, but sometimes I feel the bottleneck, and wouldn't hurt using my only USB 3.0 device on those USB 3.0 ports, eh? I've tried disconnecting and reconnecting it on USB 3.0, but WTG just ignores it as if it weren't there. Even when I connect to a different USB 2.0 port, it doesn't detect.
This USB port remapping would serve for other uses too. Once, I've connected my drive to a client's computer, for repairs. But it took longer than I expected, and I had it connected on the front USB. I needed to connect other thumb and external hard drives and had to use the rear USB ports for this, because WTG didn't detect anywhere else.

I upgraded from windows 7 to windows 8 64 bit. I have an ATI mobility radeon HD 5000 series (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM v1.20) and an intel(R) HD graphics card.
Next to the ATI mobility in device managers, there is an exclamation point in a yellow triangle. when i open it up, it says
This device cannot start. (Code 10) {Operation Failed} The requested operation was unsuccessful.
I have tried updating it but it says it is up to date. i have tried going to the HP support page but it only gives me options for a windows 7 computer and says there is nothing for my computer for windows 8.

I am on a laptop with a gtx 765m. I am trying to connect a thunderbolt port to a display port monitor. My understanding is that thunderbolt is backwards compatible with display port. But, for the life of me I can not get it to work.
I am using a minidisplay port -> display port cord.
I have ended up hooking the monitor up with an hdmi cord for now. FYI the monitor is a 2560x1440 monitor if that matters.

In a few weeks (I can't wait! ) I will replace my laptop with the Surface Pro.
Right now, though, I have my laptop connected to two monitors: One via VGA and other via DVI. I'm running Windows 8 Pro x64, so this all works great.
So the big question is whether it is possible to have multi-monitor support via the one-and-only DisplayPort that is on the Surface Pro? If so, what--if any--additional hardware would I need?
When I'm docked at home and using my Surface Pro as laptop, I really need to keep the functionality of using both external monitors (one is 31" and the other 29"). I would really hate to go back to only being able to use one.

So I'm running 2xR9 290X (crossfire) with 3xQnix Qx2710 monitors. One of the qnix monitors was purchased with HDMI/DisplayPort connectors along with the usual DVI connector (normally these monitors only come with the D-DVI input)
I had a 2 monitor (with just the two DVI-only monitors) setup for a while that was working fine.
Since installing the third monitor I'm experiencing several weird things:
- On boot, until the Windows login screen comes up (Windows 8.1), there is nothing on the non-primary DVI monitor (so my setup is my primary monitor is one of the two DVI monitors, and then the left and right monitors is another DVI-only and the DP monitor).
- If the monitors go to sleep, or I put the computer to sleep and wake it up, any windows that were on the non-primary DVI monitor are moved over to the primary DVI monitor. Windows on the DP monitor do not move in this configuration.
- Within CCC, after sleep / monitors off, I have to restart CCC's control of the color settings for the non-primary DVI monitor. (I'm forgetting what the actual button says, but it's the button under the Display color controls settings where you can manipulate the R/G/B channels - I have to use the GPU for color matching since the monitors don't have any inherent ways to change R/G/B levels
If I only connect the two DVI monitors this is not an issue.
If I connect one DVI and the DP monitor, after sleep/wake any windows that were on the DP monitor are moved over to the primary monitor (again, note that this didn't happen when all 3 monitors were connected).
I have tried the newest version of CCC, as well as the current beta version - same behavior in both.
I have tried using HDMI instead of DP - same behavior
Aspects of this sound similar to the issues discussed in this post : [URL] ......
What I don't understand is why the second DVI monitor is acting so oddly when all 3 monitors are connected. Why would there be no picture when the computer boots?
