Hardware Drivers :: Changing IDE To AHCI Caused No Boot
Mar 15, 2013
The OS is installed while the mode was set for IDE, and afterward it was changed to AHCI. Now, the system does not boot. "Attempting repair" is displayed and the process does not advance.
Windows 8 is installed on a ssd and a hdd, and both exhibit the same symptom.
The system includes GA-970A-UD3, FX-6300, DDR3 1866 4GBx2, 1TB SATA3 and 120GB SATA3 SSD.

I have an ssd (c) to boot win 8 pro 64 bit with one hd for backup (b) and two other hdd's (d and e) to install all my games to and personal files. My ssd was mounted on a 3.5" adaptor in a 5.25" bay so was partially floating so i ordered a 5.25" adaptor to fix it to.
Also my hdd for backup isnt used often so i bought a 5.25" hot swap bay for it so i can just plug in when i need to backup instead of having it constantly on.
When i plugged the drives back in i changed the sata 6 slots around a little and since then i can't get the pc to boot!
The hot swap bay seems to work power-wise but can't get to find if it works fully because i cant boot.
It seems to be a problem with the ssd as my asus sabertooth 990fx (rev 1) shows a constant "boot_device_led" light when it is connected but not with the others.
Basically when i turn the pc on it goes through POST but the mobo boot light stays on meaning its a boot problem?
I tried resetting the cmos a few times, changing ssd to different sata slots including the two sata 3 slots too, changing the sata connections from ahci to ide and back in the bios and none of this works.
One thing ive yet to do is turn off smart check in the hope it is a smart problem and will allow me to boot past the asus screen to try and repair the drive.
I'm not sure if its the ssd needs repairing or some kind of repair on the boot part of the drive or bios (boot choice)?
In the bios boot options it shows "boot manager" but i'm not sure the bcd is correct if I've moved hdd's around?

I have a SSD and tried to switch to AHCI without having to reinstall. A guide suggested i had to do to device managers and then select my IDE items, select manually install driver and install the driver for AHCI
Well now i can't boot windows 8 anymore. I get an error message before the loading is finished, and i don't even have the time to read it my computer will instantly reboot and do the same thing over and over again
Setting the BIOS to AHCI will just cause another error. Windows8 won't boot and will tell me i need to repair it.
Automatic repair from install CD isn't useful. I don't have any system restore point.

I built my first PC in summer 2013 and since then have had multiple BSOD which have sometimes been really close together and sometimes really far apart. What I mainly want to know is if it is hardware related or just related to me installing any of the 14.x Drivers from AMD
The one thing I have noticed. If I remember correctly it never BSOD during games I feel like its always when I'm watching a video online.

One day, I changed the configuration of IDE to AHCI through Windows registry and configuring the BIOS parameters. Today, I want to go back to IDE without reinstalling Windows. I do not know how to do.

So I switched over to the SATA setup via BIOS in attempt to improve my SSD performance. I knew I had to reinstall on the SSD but my I am not able to read or even format my second HDD that was also in AHCI. Is there any way to (would be awesome if) read, or at least format my drive so I can use it again? I tried disk management and other options within the OS and couldn't format.
it's an MSI 990xa gd-55 mobo. Which I am ashamed to even own because it sucks.

i have recently bought an SSD. I have heard from a youtube video that changing the Sata controller from IDE to AHCI can give me better performance but i tried to enable this and it doesn't recognize the drive. The PC will not boot in AHCI mode which meant i have to switch to IDE again. I have tried booting from the Windows install DVD but it tells me that i cannot install Windows on this drive. Am i missing something?

Currently using Onboard RAID1 which is just a pair of 1TB SATA drives that boots into windows 8.1. SATA BIOS mode is set to RAID.
I need want to switch the onboard SATA mode to AHCI so I can boot to SSD, instead.
I'm sure some have tried this: If you just clone the RAID partition as it sits on to the SSD, it will not boot the SSD when the SATA Bios mode is set to AHCI.
So, besides a bare-metal reinstall, how do move my Windows 8.1 installation on to the SSD so that when its all done the SSD will boot into windows and the SATA Bios is in AHCI mode? I'm not opposed to purchasing software like Macrium or Acronis if any of those can do the job.
It seems like anyone using onboard RAID would have run into this problem after purchasing an SSD.

Ever since switching to AHCI mode, I've noticed that my keyboard has issues with the volume wheel not working properly. Also after setting up the LED lighting on the keyboard and a few restarts later, I've notice that when restarting my system the keyboard LED, blue in this case, will automatically show up and when it does, and I use the del key to get into BIOS doesn't work. I have to move the the usb connection to a different port, restart and keyboard LED will be white. This time using the del key, I can get into my BIOS no problem. This never happened when I was using native IDE mode.

A couple of weeks ago, I cloned my HDD C drive to a new 250GB Samsung 840 EVO SSD.
After fitting the SSD in place of the old HDD, the system rebooted fine and worked well with a very noticeable increase in the speed at which Windows loaded.
However, Samsung's "Magician" software informed me that the drive was running in SATA mode and that better performance would be obtained by switching the Storage Configuration parameter to AHCI mode in the BIOS on my ASUS P7P55D Pro motherboard.
So, I tried this but Windows would not load. I didn't get a BSOD as such... I'd get the Windows 8 start-up logo with the spinning dots below for a while, then the screen would go blank, then a message would flash briefly on the screen saying something along the lines of "Windows has experienced a problem and was unable to start so your computer is being restarted" (not exact words as it's not on screen long enough for me to read) and my computer reboots. This startup/error/reboot loop is repeated until I enter the BIOS and switch Storage Configuration back to IDE whereupon all is back to normal.
Further research then revealed that I needed to tweak the registry so I did this but I still get the startup/error/reboot loop.
Next I tried booting into SAFE mode as described in this thread. It'll boot fine if I leave Storage Configuration set to IDE but not if I change it to AHCI. It just goes back to the same old startup/error/reboot loop and Windows makes no attempt to install any new drivers.
I know I could do a clean install of Windows but I don't really want to go down that route if I can possibly avoid it.
I strongly suspect that the motherboard's Intel(R) 5 Series/3400 Series SATA AHCI/RAID Controller does not have the right driver installed that would enable AHCI mode to work. Is there a way that I can force installation of an updated driver? Is there such a thing (device manager tells me the latest driver is installed)?
I can live with IDE mode as the computer boots considerably faster from the SSD and programs load much quicker too but not being able to use AHCI mode is bugging

I tried installing the 8.1 Intel SATA/RAID driver from the ASUS website P8Z68-V motherboard model, but when enabling AHCI in BIOS I'm getting blue screens which is making me think something isn't configured properly in the OS. How to properly enable this in 8.1 yet? I'd definitely like the extra speed out of my SSD

I have an SSD drive with 2 partitions on it. 1st partition has Win 7 on it as drive letter C. 2nd Partition has Win 8 on it as Drive letter W. At 1 point in time if I booted to Win 8 the drive letter would dynamically change from drive letter W to Drive letter C and make Win 7 drive letter W. The revers was true if I booted to Win 7. Something has changed somewhere, where this dynamic drive letter changing is no longer working. When I boot to Win 8 the drive letter remains to be drive letter W & Win 7 is still drive C. This is causing problems when I'm booted to Win 8 with regard to installing & using apps while in Win 8 since the C drive is really the Win 7 system drive.
How can I fix this to get back the dynamic flip flopping of drive C? I confess to being somewhat ignorant when dealing with this particular area of things.

Today when I played my favorite game ( entropia universe), I got a message from my game saying that I have low ram, I checked on the Ctrl alt del thing and I was shocked that only 3.8 gb ram was usable when i have 8 gb ram and using 64 bit system. So here comes to my first question... Why would this happen?
So I happened to follow a tutorial and turned on the maximum ram checkbox in the advanced settings in boot tab in msconfig. However when I first reboot I got the session 3 initialisation failed BSOD. The second time and third time and so on and so forth I got bad system config info, which turned my computer into a reboot loop. Second question, why would this happen?
My experience similar to this unlucky fellow : Win 8 BSOD : BAD_SYSTEM_CONFIG_INFO (Details available)SOS
so I followed the guide in the thread and tried to recreate my BCD. I successfully got into the advanced setup options ( I think it is called this ?) by pressing shift +f8.
However I still failed as I was locked there. Every option including opening the command prompt is blocked because it said that operating these options needed administrative rights which I have in my hands. However the ASO said that it can't find any administrative accounts in my computer. Third question , why would this happen?
So now my computer fell into another loop. Whenever I started my computer it went into the ASO and wouldn't get away from it. And can't even see the lovely face in BSOD.
I am am using windows 8.1 in amd fx 8150 and 8 gb ram, computer was somehow normal with occasional freezing ( 1-2 times a month ).

I cannot change cameras I want to use on some websites (Skype and yahoo ok). When I go to try to select an external cam on some websites which merely show "About Adobe Flash Player" in the "camera area", I can't seem to pull up the icon which allows me to select the external camera. The internal camera works just fine on those sites, but if I disabled the internal camera "hoping the computer" would recognize the external camera as the "new default" camera, I then have no camera whatsoever on those sites.

I have an Asus laptop with Windows 8 64-Bit on it and I uninstalled AsusDVD after having some issues with it. After I did this my laptop no longer allowed me to play DVDs. Despite having Windows Media Player, which I know plays DVDs since I have it on my desktop.
Is there a way that I can change some settings to use Windows Media Player? When I open "Autoplay" Windows Media Player is not an option to play it on and there isn't anything else on my laptop that can play it. I tried a few different free DVD players, but none were able to play them for some reason.
How I can get Windows Media Player to play DVDs or suggest a free software that I can download that will play DVDs?

I recently started having the black screen with the flashing cursor come up sometimes when I start my PC. I have narrowed it down as being my 3rd HDD (2TB WD) as the culprit, which I only use as media storage. It is not set as a boot device since windows is on my SSD and when I unplug the drive from my mobo, windows always starts up without any issue.
Basically my question is, is this just a case of a hard drive going bad? I ran chkdsk on all 3 drives and none of them had any issues and it is not fragmented or anything that I can tell, so I don't know. I have had this setup for a while now and about a month ago it started doing this. The screen doesn't always come up however, so I have no clue what the issue is.

I Have a problem with my HP NV6-1126SA Laptop which came with Windows 8. I have done a windows 8 update which has caused my screen to become very dim. I have tried
The basic adjusting setups for example the FN and brightness key which does not work. The lower right corner adjust which are on full and still no effect on the screens brightness.Scanned with Anti-MalwareBytes and removed the two trojansThe SFC Scan had repaired some of the errors except the brightness of the screen.Disk Check found no errors
I have recently used your removal tool to remove McAfee from my laptop and manually removed Norton Internet Security. I do have Windows Defender on there.
I was wondering if i should replace Windows Defender with Microsoft Security Essential? Also I want to identify the problem with my brightness of the screen if it is software related.

Unknown Driver caused a system crash - igdkmd64.sys
Frequent occurrences
Brand new Dell laptop - barley setup let alone used.
Graphics drivers & windows 8.1 service packs updated.
Appears to be graphics related and occurs when using apps that would require the higher performance settings only. Crashes appear to be seeming random and often occur when i'm not even in front of the computer can occur immediately starting an app or an hour later.

I just can't seem to get windows 8 to install/use the ahci controller - some specifics:
- new system
- clean windows 8 install (non-pro)
- one new ssd drive and one new hybrid drive, latest firmware flashed
- windows 8 installed on ssd (samsung 120gb)
- bios set to ahci+raid
- bios version current
- installed Windows 8 without pre-installing latest storage drivers during setup, ahci not recognized in device manager
- reinstalled Windows 8 using latest pre-installed drivers during setup, ahci still not recognized in device manager
Spent a lot of time researching this issue and none of the suggestions i've come across seem to work, including registry hacks. regardless of what i do Windows 8 just won't recognize my drives as ahci mode - ahci mode is setup in bios but Windows 8 still loads the ide drivers which can be seen in device manager under ata/atapi controllers. Why won't windows 8 recognize the bios ahci setting?
chipset - intel pch-c206
hp z1 server
latest bio update installed
cpu - e-1245
ssd (120gb) - operating system
hybrid drive (500gb) - storage
memory - 16gb

I am using Windows 8.1 x64. I am booting in IDE mode and I want to convert that into AHCI. I have read the following post-: Change from IDE to AHCI after installing Windows 8 - Super User
But has anyone converted Windows 8/8.1 to ACHI after installing ? Are there any problems after the conversion ?Microsoft has a patch for Windows 7/Vista but nothing for Windows 8/8.1.
The reason I want to do this is because I am going to install Debian Squeeze(Linux) and dual boot it with Windows. It seems Linux does not support SATA IDE but only supports AHCI.

My little brother has an 8.1 laptop, and from what I understand, when it prompted him for updates he clicked to restart. Now when the laptop tries to restart he sees his manufacturer logo and the Windows 8 loading circle, but after this the monitor goes black and stays that way. At some point a bluescreen pops up, says something about fixing the PC, goes to 100% after 5 minutes, restarts the PC, and the PC goes back to the manufacturer logo to start the loop again.

I installed the latest version (3.0.0.9015) of Secunia software to my new Win 8.1 desktop. The PSI Setup looked OK.
I got a screen at the end that said: PSI has been installed on your computer. Click Finish to Close Setup.
While I was reading this message and it was still on the screen I immediately had a message pop-up from "System Restore" that said: System Restore completed successfully. System has been restored to 11/11/2013 4:35:46 PM. Your documents have not been affected. <Close>
I wasn't anywhere near the Restore screen. I had just turned on the machine, searched to see if Secunia was available for 8.1 (since I used it on my Win 7 machine), and started the download. The download was successful and I was able to run a scan....but this whole System Restore completion screen has freaked me out.
I realize I should have manually set a restore point before loading new software
When I look at my current possibilities for doing a restore, I can select from 11/23 or 11/30 - both auto set (so why 11/11?. I'd assume there should also be one for 12/7 since they are being set weekly, but it's not there. Nor are any other restore points, though I really had been setting them quite frequently as I was "configuring" this new machine.
The allocation is set at 30. Is this typically sufficient for a set-it-up-and-leave-it-alone user?

If I add a SSD (Crucial MX100 CT256MX100SSD1 2.5" 256GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive). Can I use it as the boot drive as well as the backup drive? Then use the existing 1TB HDD as the main storage drive. I need a backup drive so I figure if this works then it could give me a performance boost as well. How could this best be done to satisfy both needs? Would I put all the programs on the SSD and all the data on the HDD? My current drive is at 119GB used space. How do I determine how much back up space is needed?

An option in the boot settings (accessed by holding shift key while restarting) is there to turn off driver signing restrictions but it isn't working for me at all.
I did it on my desktop with windows 8.1 (not preloaded) in order to set my mouse USB port to a higher frequency with a non-digitally signed driver.
