Hardware Drivers :: Win 8.1 - Secondary HDD Formatted As GPT Has 4 Unused Partitions
Jun 29, 2014I recently set up Windows 8.1 on a new SSD (as GPT). While I'm aware that Windows automatically creates its necessary extra small partitions for recovery, I just realized that my secondary HDD which I also formatted as GPT has these extra partitions. This secondary HDD was the one shipped on my laptop that used to have Win 8 preinstalled so maybe its remnants of that.
My question is (and I hope this is the right forum to ask): Are those partitions only necessary if the said hard drive contains the OS? In other words, can I delete them since this is a secondary drive?

Nov 12, 2013I have Windows 8.1 x64, I have a 1TB drive attached on USB 3.0 port, the disk has four partitions, two are not allocated, I am trying to extend the volume on one of the active partitions, a Healthy, Primary partition but I get a message "The operation you selected will turn the selected disk(s) to Dynamic disk(s).
I'm not sure what it means but how do I get the extended volume to be a Basic volume?

Sep 15, 2014So I've set up my desktop PC to function as a portable WiFi hotspot for my other mobile devices. First I used the Cmd Prompt to create a sharing network, but since I had to open that every time I started up the computer, I switched to using a program called MyPublicWiFi (1 click setup).
However, in the last few days, my WiFi connection was getting kind of buggy. (No internet connection with my phone while I was connected to the WiFi network, etc)
Just now, I looked at the Network Connections, and there are 3 LAN connections that weren't there before. (picture: [URL] ....) Are they part of the problem, and how do I remove those networks?
Unable To Format Partition With Unused Windows 7?
May 25, 2014Basically I installed windows 8 on an SSD and partitioned one of my 2tb drives in order to install / transfers programs and documents etc into windows 8 from the old windows 7 install. This worked perfectly, however, windows is not not letting my format the windows 7 side of the partition so i can expand and let windows 8 have the full 2tb of storage!
Windows 7 is installed on E:, I think perhaps the bootmgr may lay inside of E hence why I can't format it.

May 21, 2013So recently i bought a refurbished/used Samsung ultrabook (NP540U3C-A01UB )
One of the features is that is has : (500GB with 24GB ExpressCache - Technology)
Which I don really understand.
I've also noticed that the system has a lot of partitions that are taking space and are largely unused. I've had the computer for about a month and i use it everyday almost and so far a lot of the partitions havent been used.
I don't see a reason why to have those.
So can i Erase them??
Please notice 2 disks. I know the larger one is used for C: and the other for the ExpressCache???
Also notice that disk1 is empty. Pretty much all of them are, with the exception of 2 (C: and the partition right of it)
What is it used for?? How can i find out?? Whoever installed this system made a mess.
Here is a second part of my question:
For work reasons I have to have a Ubuntu machine and I thought I could just dualboot and use the partitions that are unused. Which is why i care about the unused space.
I have used virtualbox in the past but it was really slow. I need a responsive system and virtualization is no longer an option.
So my question would be how can i accomplish the dualbooting?? Specially taken that i have UEFI/random partitions in my system.
I know there are a lot of tutorials out there but none come close to my drive mapping/situation.
Just don't wanna destroy my system while trying to get the dualboot working.
Safe To Delete Unused Metro Apps Folders
Jun 23, 2014I've noticed that there are a lot of folders in C:Users<user>AppDataLocalPackages and their names sound like Metro apps. The folder contain subfolder for Metro apps I no longer use and even have uninstalled them.
The question is: why weren't they deleted next to applications uninstalls and is it safe to delete them manually?

How To Extend Desktop Screen On TV
Jun 6, 2014I'm trying to extend my desktop screen on my TV. I have my laptop connected through an HDMI cable to the TV. When I choose extend desktop, nothing is shown on the TV. The TV is blank. Windows does detect the TV screen because both displays show up in the "Screen resolution" dialog. The TV also indicates that it has a signal.
The screen has been extended because when I move the mouse to edge of the screen, instead of stopping, it keeps going. When I drag a window, it does not stop at the edge but it keeps going. However, neither the mouse or the window is shown on the TV. Of course, I can move the mouse and window back to the laptop.
I have a Dell Inspiron laptop, Windows 8.1, Intel Core i3-4010u, 6GB RAM, Integrated Intel HD graphics. I have Sceptre X325BV-FMDR TV. Not sure if this is an issue with my TV or laptop.
Unable To Move / Extend Gpt Partition?
Sep 15, 2014I have a Windows 8 system on a SSD with about 200gb free on the left of the C: partition (left over from previous OS I dual booted). The ssd is gpt partitioned and boots using EFI.
I tried moving the partition to the left using Gparted which worked but windows wouldnt boot. I tried recreating the bcd files with no success. After doing some research I was lead to believe it was due to keys under HKLMSystemMountedDevices having the partition offset hardcoded as it would start to boot windows then crash with an error saying boot device inaccessible.
I got it booting again by moving the partition back to the correct position and recreating the bcd files again.
So are there any guides or tools that can move the partition to the left and update the relevant areas of windows so that it can boot? Or extend the partition to the left without breaking it?

I moved everything out of D: to delete the volume so I would have free space to the right of C:, which I've read is what you need to do in order to extend partitions using Disk Management. However, the option is still greyed-out when right-clicking C: as shown:
I did this because I've read mixed things about using 3rd-party software to extend partitions; some that don't truly extend it and just trick your computer into merging the two... I like doing things the purest way possible and would like to truly combine C: with the free space to the right of it. Why the option is not available?

My tech support worked on it for 2 days and gave up said I should backup and do a clean install from start. So I did.

Jul 14, 2014I have two wifi adapters i have been trying to get to work consistently with no luck for several days now. One had been working fine for a few weeks, then it stopped, i tried switching, and that one worked for half a day, then it stopped. Once it stops working the connection is 'limited' but works fine on other machines, or it says it is connected in settings but Chrome says it isn't online. So i wanted to try to install a different driver, having read that this can often be the solution.
But in both cases, there is no old driver to roll back to, and when i try to tell Windows to load a driver i've downloaded or have on a disc, it says, no, the one it already has is 'up to date', and it won't do it. Is there some way to dig around in the system to get rid of the driver it claims is better so i can try another one?

What exactly will it do?
If I enable this, will Windows then automatically install software packages/drivers from the manufacturer, like for example the Logitech Setpoint software for their keyboards and mouse and similar software for other devices? I don't want or need that. Or will it behave like in Windows 7?
On my other PC with Windows 7 I see in Windows Update that there are a couple of optional updates, including that Logitech stuff, as well as some driver for a BenQ monitor I have and also nvidia video drivers. This kind of stuff I don't want or need installed automatically as important updates in Windows Update - so I am worried if enabling this automatic driver stuff in Windows 8 is different than Windows 7? Meaning that it will get installed secretly/automatically?
However, it's fine that Windows finds them so I can manually go and check if I want to install any of it.
The key is that the updates are optional in Windows 7, but I have seen a few people complain about Windows 8 installing stuff like video drivers and mouse drivers automatically.
