I am wondering if it is possible to modify the presets of the sort by in Windows 7/8/8.1?
I have a pretty big music folder with multiple folders. I want to sort them by Bit rates and other things. But I have so many folders I have to go into and add this new option into the sort by.
Is it possible to add the option below to the select-able options on right click?
I have many folders (with a couple of thousand files) configured to display sorted by date. When using software and needing to open a file from within the program, it opens what looks like an Explorer window. However, the sort order is always by name initially and it takes a minute or so to suddenly display in the correct sort order as specified in Windows itself.
If I repeat this a few minutes later it goes through the routine all over again!
Running explorer from Windows 8 itself is no problem, it remembers the sort order. Is there a way to make third party software that calls up an explorer window do the same please?
Incidentally having given up on the truly slow and clumsy windows search function, I installed Search Everything and it is instant and reliable. Why can't Microsoft Search be like that?
Is it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed? I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:
I am wondering such a tool exists that I can use to create "presets" to automatically shutdown (or start) a pre-defined set of background processes or apps.
I do a lot of different things... AutoCAD, video editing, audio editing, control system programming, etc. When I doing some of these things, I would like some background tasks to shutdown. Right now, I use Task Manager to do this manually.
Even better would be the ability to defect when a specific program is running and that triggers some actions.
I've only got the tabs Pinned and Presets on my AMD Catalyst Control Center. I've done some looking around and I'm sure that I should have more options, more tabs, be able to optimize graphics and stuff for games.

Why windows can't remember my view settings, sort by settings and thumnails ?
I have different types of view settings for different folders but everytime I restart my computer they change. Same thing with thumbnails expect they seem to last a couple days before disappearing, sometimes a thumbnail will appear on a different folder then it was set to.
I would like to sort the files in a particular folder by, say, date modified, but NOT have this setting applied to other folders in my computer. For example, I would want the files in the other folders to be sorted by name. However, I can't seem to be able to do this in Windows 8 - changing the sort settings for a particular folder applies it to every other folder.
Is there a way to customize the sort settings for individual folders without having it applied across the board? I recall being able to do it in Windows Vista/7, but can't seem to find the option in Windows 8.
I much prefer the "list view" in my folders but I don't see way to add "columns" to list view. The only folder view showing these sort tabs is "details" view. Can anything be done about this?
Radeon HD5450 Samsung TV connected via HDMI to graphics card AMD HDMI High Definition Audio Device Realtek HD audio
I have a strange problem that has not always been there but just recently if I don't have any sounds for about 5 minutes the HDMI audio seems to go into some sort of suspended mode and when I click on (generate) a sound (either system or music etc) it takes about 30 seconds for the sound to actually appear (manifest itself) through the Samsung TV speakers.
At first I thought it might be some conflict with the Realtek HD audio so I have disabled this (mobo built-in sound) in the BIOS and uninstalled the realtek drivers. This did not work.
I then thought it was probably an update to the Sound drivers or the graphics drivers for the ATI / AMD Sound card. I have installed the latest catalyst drivers and this did not work. I then fully uninstalled the catalyst drivers including the HDMI Audio and installed an earlier version 9.2.00 from 2012. This did not work either.
The only Playback Audio Device I have in the Sound settings is Digital Audio (HDMI) and I have tried disbling all audio enhancements. This did not work.
Please note that this happens even if I am using the computer (i.e. the screen can be on all of the time and it still happens after a few minutes).
Other things I have tried:
Power Config - disabled Link State Power Management for the PCIe card
One think I have observed (and I am not sure if this is a symptom or a cause) - The "Windows Audio Device Graph Isolation" process uses about 3-4% CPU while the 30 seconds or so elapses between the sound being invoked and it playing through the speakers. the rest of the sstem is relatively in idle. I can reproduce this by clicking on the sound and adjusting the volume a tad. It is meant to make an immediate "bing" sound to show the sound level is clicked or changed.
If I wait the 30 seconds then the sound eventually comes and then if I click on it again (or do other sound related things) then the sounds are instantaneous. Its only of I leave it 5 minutes or so with no sound activity. If I wait, say, 2 minutes the sound is instant too so long as their has been a sound event in the prior 5 minutes or so.
Right now, if I rename a file in windows explorer, or right click->create new folder (or new file), or do a bunch of other things, I don't see the result of the action (i.e., the file's name stays the same, or the new folder/file doesn't appear) until I click away to another folder, and then back to the one I did the action in.
Why is this happening, and how can I fix it? I haven't explicitly changed anything recently, though maybe an update broke something.
I recently upgraded to Windows 8 on my Boot Camp partition (i'm aware that Apple hasn't officially released drivers for 8 yet, i'm still running the Windows 7 Boot Camp drivers and so far it seems stable).
I've ran into a little problem in the Explorer. As i'm using an SSD, i have my Windows partition fairly small (~50GB) so i keep all of my photos on my Mac partition and don't duplicate them over.
When trying to browse through these photos on the Windows side, i can see the file name and the icon, and they open perfectly in Windows Picture Viewer, but within Explorer they all show the same default Windows "Mountain by the lake" icon.
I've been into Folder Preferences and told it only to display thumbnails and not the icon but still no luck...
I have been having a bit of a problem with Explorer in Windows 8. Occasionally the explorer just locks up. Typically when I right click on an item, it will freeze. At which point I usually use the task manager to kill Explorer and start it up again. However, until I restart my machine, I am unable to change the listing view (details, medium icons, etc) because the buttons are greyed out, nor am I able to right click on the item without explorer locking again. Additionally, icons don't appear to render afterwards either.
I did a clean install of Windows 8.1 this week and have a fully updated installation now with minimal programs installed. My problem is this, I have my downloads folder set to sort files by date created, from newest to oldest so I can easily find my newest downloads as they should be at the top of the listing, but Windows explorer will not refresh the view if I have have explorer open, forcing me to either manually refresh it or go to another folder, then come back which updates the view. I never had to do this with the old win 8 pro installation and have tried resetting the folders several times but it still won't update by itself. I do have the latest version of Start8 installed, but that never caused a problem before.
I use an alternative file manager so I don't run explorer.exe very often. But today I had a need to, and when I opened it, I found that the ribbon interface was missing.
The file manager I use does take over all file and folder operations by default, but even turning off the "Explorer replacement" option, the ribbon remains missing...
use Chrome as my main browser and I've recently downloaded Firefox. But sometime today i have realized that I do not have IE11 (I have Windows 8.1) installed. Perhaps I uninstalled it or something has happened. I want to know how to install back another IE11. I have check microsoft's Website:
I then was looking through my Program Files I found that my IE folder was still there. There was something called iexplore.exe (as seen in my screenshot) [URL].... and I want to know if that app will install my IE back? Even thoug it is not critical, I would still like to know how to get it back.
Ok since Windows 8 there was a cool feature within windows explorer that would show the content of a shortcut folder at the bottom without having to click on it.
Then 8.1 disabled the feature and hidden the feature really well. It took some time doing, actually it was probably more of a fluke, but I was able to turn on the feature again.
But now it was some how rested and the feature has been disabled again, and I can't find it.
What the feature is called, all I know is that if you open up your file explorer go to either of your Documents / Music / Pictures / Video folder, it then would show the contents of your shortcut folder from your other hard drive. The view at the top, lets say you went to pictures, would show all the folders that you have in the Pictures. You'd have a description above the folders that says "Pictures (how many folders you have)" and below that the file extension. Below that you would have the "(The name of your shortcut) (how many files/ folders you have)," the extension, and then the content that are within the Shortcut all within the same explorer.
Iam running 8pro 64 bit. when I open an file explorer window, sometimes there is everytihg, but most of the time, there is just "desktop" and it is searching.I have to manually right click and open new explorer to get it to show all drives and locations. Also, when I get into a window with movies or pictures, all the files are white, no thumbnail! I have no virus and the installation is new and it is from the Microsoft site. all updates are installed.
When i open up my file explorer and for some reason steam friends it shows on the task bar that it is there and it is running but when i click on them it doesnt show the window.
I cannot paste the TSG SysInfo! When I open Internet Explorer
"This page cannot be displayed" or "Website doesn't appear to be valid" appears.
I also have problems with "LAN" settings. When using Google and going to a webpage I receive a message that No proxy server available or page cannot be displayed. I have changed the settings in Google settings and Internet Explorer but this message keeps returning. What can I do other than keep changing the settings?
I recently built a PC after years of owning Macs. In general it has gone very smoothly, but I'm now running into an issue where Windows Explorer will freeze. This will go on for minutes at a time, and (generally) then resume functionality after what appears to be it restarting itself.
During this time I cannot get to the task manager, but other apps not using Windows Explorer work just fine.

It has happened multiple times within the past couple days and I am relying on this machine for work.
my windows explorer seems to be messed up somehow (at least I think that's not normal). I am not sure what is going on, isn't everything supposed to be under "This PC"? Classic shell doesn't fix it either.
