View 3 RepliesI've been having this issue and trying to wrap my head around it for a couple weeks, and I've had this new laptop less than a month. Just as I was posting this, I realized that it seems to be specifically 64-bit programs.
Specifically, the problem is that when I try to drag a file from Explorer into a program that I know is able to load it from drag-and-drop, all I get is the "no" pointer, the circle with the line. All the programs I've tested would let you drag files onto them just fine on my older Windows 7 laptop.
Some of the specific programs this is happening in:
Microsoft Office 2010 (seemingly the whole suite is acting like this, I tested Word and Powerpoint)
Paint.NET 3.5.10
Sony Vegas 12.0
Waterfox 18.0.1
I can File>Open files in these programs just fine, but dragging to them from Explorer would be miles more convenient. I've tested the files I've tried dragging. They drag fine into Notepad, they drag fine into Foobar2000, IrfanView, Notepad++, all operating as 32-bit.
Now I WAS having the same problem with Audacity and Skype, which is why I didn't catch the pattern of them all being x64 programs at first (since I have 32-bit versions of both), but that was happening because they were being run as Administrator, which is an issue I'd also like to try and resolve. I don't understand why running as Admin should prevent me from dragging files into open windows of them.
When in file explorer the zip icon under the share tab is not active. When I click on a simple folder, it does not highlight. If I right click on the folder and go to send to all I get is the dvd drive unless I shift right click first then a drop down of more selections appear but not send to compress. Is this something that need to be activated. I can un-zip a fle from the view tab.
View 4 Replies View RelatedSimilar to the issue wherein icons no longer load properly for Explorer, but this isn't happening in 64-bit Explorer.
So far I have only seen that 32-bit applications that require saving files or loading files will not show the icons in the dialog. 64-bit Paint.NET and 64-bit TeamSpeak 3 does not experience this problem, where several other 32-bit applications are, like Skype, uTorrent, MP3tag, etc.
I have tried the IconCache clear/refresh several times to no avail.
Some icons still show in the side panel that includes Computer, Libraries, Favorites, etc., but not all of them.
I want to make win 8 iso setup with programs pre installed, that after i install win 8 i won’t need to install those programs. View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to add a file extension to the list given in Control Panel/Default Programs. In WinXP it was really easy but I hardly needed to use it as there seemed to be a lot more extensions available anyway back then. Unbelievably, (well, to me anyway), MS seem to have omitted '.flac'. How do I go about it?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSome programs are becoming slow to load or do not recognize their connection to a file extension. Most noticeable are Nitro PDF Professional which doesn't always start when I click on a PDF file, sometimes it does, some times it doesn't. Quicken is often slow to start, some times the window opens then it waits for the display, sometimes the there is a wait until the window even opens. Same for xplorer2 opening and even selecting another folder. Going back to Windows 7 with almost the identical installed programs/utilities (about 40) the "problem" goes away.
View 9 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to sort a folder's contents with both File names and Sub-Folder names intermixed? I have projects in sub-folders, and 'support' files like this:
projabc (sub-folder)
projabc.txt (file)
projabc.bat (file)
amongst other projects. I would like all the 'projabc...' items to appear together.
Until I activated Windows 8, I could pin to the taskbar, now I can't!

View 8 Replies View RelatedI did a clean install of Windows 8.1 this week and have a fully updated installation now with minimal programs installed. My problem is this, I have my downloads folder set to sort files by date created, from newest to oldest so I can easily find my newest downloads as they should be at the top of the listing, but Windows explorer will not refresh the view if I have have explorer open, forcing me to either manually refresh it or go to another folder, then come back which updates the view. I never had to do this with the old win 8 pro installation and have tried resetting the folders several times but it still won't update by itself. I do have the latest version of Start8 installed, but that never caused a problem before.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI use an alternative file manager so I don't run explorer.exe very often. But today I had a need to, and when I opened it, I found that the ribbon interface was missing.
The file manager I use does take over all file and folder operations by default, but even turning off the "Explorer replacement" option, the ribbon remains missing...
Iam running 8pro 64 bit. when I open an file explorer window, sometimes there is everytihg, but most of the time, there is just "desktop" and it is searching.I have to manually right click and open new explorer to get it to show all drives and locations. Also, when I get into a window with movies or pictures, all the files are white, no thumbnail! I have no virus and the installation is new and it is from the Microsoft site. all updates are installed.

View 9 Replies View Related"To change the way Windows Explorer opens (copy and paste)
one of the examples below to the target portion of a shortcut and name it Windows Explorer.
Examples:
Open Windows Explorer with My Computer as the root with
all drives visible and "My Computer" selected.
C:WINDOWSEXPLORER.EXE /e,/n,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}"

In Windows 8.1 the "target" box is grayed out. File Explorer always starts with the THIS PC folder highlighted... and I would like to change that. How?
I have just had a factory reset & for some reason I can't get my photos in Pictures in File Explorer back into Photos. If I insert a flash drive with pictures on it & select 'Import' in Photos, it will import the photos but after supposedly downloading them, nothing! I have the 'Show photos & videos' box ticked off in Settings on the Charms panel.
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince 2 days ago I've noticed that I cannot create a new folder with File Explorer by any way possible. Using the taskbar or the SHIFT + Ctrl + N. Even when saving projects with Save File as... and trying to use the "New Folder" text string button does not create any folder. Using CMD prompt or powershell all works well as with Total Commander which i only installed to see if it could create folders and it does. Other programs that auto create folders also works well (i.e. Foobar when transcoding to new unavailable folder). My Windows 8 Pro is original, it's a 4 month old install, I've not made any customizations, no registry hacks, Windows is bare apart from Classic Shell which i only use now as a custom button to go to start screen with the mouse. I also made a custom High Contrast Theme that i use at night or when eyes are a bit tired. It's 2 months old so it's there long before the problem.I've not installed any new programs in the last week apart from some updates from FileZilla, Foxit pdf and Notepad++.Last system update is COPICOM from 13 July.I followed this guide which as not resolved the problem: I cannot find a way to create a new folder in Windows 8. -
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I have a high res display on my laptop and the File Explorer looks like the fuzzy poop you get. Usually you right click the app in the task bar, then right click the name, click compat tab, and then disable dpi scaling, but the compat tab is missing for some reason for File Explorer and only that app. So it looks fuzzy and crappy.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI don't know how long it's been missing, if it ever was there, but I thought it would be handy to have File Explorer on the Task Bar.
I found it on the Applications page of the start menu, right clicked on it, and saw that File Explorer was already pinned to the task bar. I tried unpinning it, then repinning it, but is just doesn't show up.
I am trying to figure out how i can change the cover art/icon for my DVD movies (mkv) so they dont all have the same default icon. I would like to change the icon to like a DVD cover for each movie so its easy to look through them and find the movie you want, not to mention it looks so much better.

View 16 Replies View RelatedThe folder had over 900 hundred files so I placed them in separate files after reading that too many files causes explorer to crash, however when I change 2 of the 7 folders to details explorer automatically crashes, for one it closes as soon as I change it to details and for the other, it closes when I scroll down, they're mostly photos and videos, also I should mention that before I put them in separate folders, it kept crashing when I tried to open it.

I am using classic shell in Windows 8 on my home pc & laptop.
On the PC "desktop" shows in file explorer but, on the laptop it does not show, please see the left attachment as opposed to the right one of the PC.
In addition, the laptop one shows the partitions spread out as opposed to the PC.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI often have 3,4,5 sessions of File Explore open at once. [old habit] I can use the keyboard to copy/paste, etc with no problem. But if I use the right mouse click to "copy" or check Properties, or anything else, file explorer freezes for a few seconds, then closes. In fact it closes all sessions and shows the default Windows screen [as if just booting up] and finally all the icons reappear. It takes about 15 seconds for the screen to return to normal.
Replacement mouse does the same. Right click works perfectly inside a file, like to copy text, etc, and inside every other program. Only in File Explorer does it totally crash, no matter if only one open or many.
I have an existing OpenOffice document, (it's actually a 375 page book of Spanish) in File Explorer's 'Documents' that I transferred from an old XP laptop by flash drive. All my other documents except .doc & the Oo one, which is: .odt have opened up successfully. I downloaded Oo 3.4.1 which is the latest one. It will by right clicking & selecting 'Open with', after a long period open in Wordpad but a lot of the lines have jumped out of column. I tried right clicking, selecting 'Share with' & 'Specific people' & typed in 'Administrator'' along with my User name of robinp. It didn't solve the problem. I'm going to have a try at right clicking & selecting 'Properties'>'Security', etc. & trying that route.

No new software has been installed since creating the new user account. We use Norton 360 and also Malware Bytes for protection.
I'm really annoyed by the context sensitive ribbons in the file explorer. The constantly change the look (a coloured tab pops up (library tools in this example picture) and the title name moves) from the window when I work with various files. Even when I have minimized the ribbon the tab pops up.
How do you feel about it? It's like a flash light which makes the GUI very distracting imho.
change it (disable it or a least make the colour from the ribbon-pop-up the same as the window border colour?)
