View 9 RepliesI have 24 GB RAM. Windows 8 automatically allocated 6 GB as a page file.
In the past, on Windows 7, I had 16 GB RAM and I always disabled the page file with 0 problems.
I dont play games, just surfing and watching movies. Shall I disable the page file or set it to a fixed 1 GB Min / Max or leave it as it is?
I am upgrading to 32 GB RAM next week to to have dual channel in all RAM slots because now 1 slot is empty making the second RAM slot run on a single channel.
How to enable disable transparency I can't find the option.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI tried that as is in the tutorial. Disable/Enable Metro was added to the context menu, but if I click it the following error message was returned:

I couldn't even change any of this settings here in this tab.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI think I'm fighting a network permissions problem, but I'm stuck.
I have reliable connections to my DSL modem and to the internet. I would like to enable/disable my network interface, in this case the ethernet connection to my DSL modem, (not the DSL modem connection to the phone line).
After cruising through the Control Panel/Network and Sharing/Change Adapter Settings/ menus, I made a desktop shortcut to my Ethernet device. Right clicking on the shortcut shows a context menu with "Disable". This option works fine and cancels the connection to the modem. After that, the shortcut context menu remains the same: no option for "Enable" is shown.
However, if I follow "Open file location" to the control panel's Network screen, the context menu for the target icon DOES contain "enable". More strange: after clicking on main Network context menu, now the desktop shortcut displays "Enable". Sometimes nothing "enables" until I run the "Diagnose" option several times with administrative priv. (I am the administrator).

I have built a rig to be predominantly used with Adobe Creative Cloud Programs. 32gb of ram, a 256gb ssd for Windows 8 (64-bit) and programs, a 64gb ssd for a home testing server, 3 hdd for storage, and another 64 gb ssd. I want to use the 3rd ssd for the Windows 8 page file and PhotoShop's swap file. My question is, how much of that should be used for each. I understand that the page file needs to be in its own partition, and I plan on allocating the remaining room for the swap file, but what size should I make the page file partition?
View 12 Replies View RelatedI am getting the errors Could Not Enable File History: The System Cannot Find the File Specified and File History Doesn't Recognize This Drive. I tried deleting the File History folders on the external drive and in the AppData folder (although the File History folders never contain any files, they are always empty). I tried sharing the File History folder on the external drive with Everyone. Nothing has worked.
I've also tried to select another drive or reselect the external drive; I get the message "We found some files you previously copied using File History" and asks if I would like to move them. It won't let me choose No, i.e. choosing No has the same effect as choosing Cancel. If I choose yes, I get an error message saying it can't complete the migration. It seems like I need to reset File History somehow and maybe get rid of these leftover files (although I don't know where they would have come from, because I don't think I've ever turned on File History in the past, but I could be wrong there.) At any rate I don't know where these leftover files would be located because I've already deleted every File History folder I could find (in AppData and on external drive).
I have been trying to print web pages but all I get is the Page 1 of _ on the top and the file name and date on the bottom. The rest of the sheet is blank. I have no problem printing excel documents, just web pages.
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I use Explorer on Windows 8.1 to copy multiple FLAC files to a folder on the SD card of my Nokia Lumia 625 (running on Windows Phone 8.1) via USB, a dialog window pops up in Explorer, asking me to choose between converting and just copying. If I choose to just copy, a progress bar appears, and it always gets stuck at the end of the first file transfer so I have to cancel or close the progress window, and, as a result, only the first file is transferred. If I copy a single FLAC file instead of multiple ones, the same thing happens at the end of the file transfer. So I am forced to copy the files one at a time, and I have to close the popup window for each of them. Is there any way to solve this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am in the midst of the final steps in setting my my new Win 8 system.
I have a Win XP and Win 8 computer on my home network. I believe that I have set up file and printer sharing correctly. I can access the files and printer on the XP system from the Win 8 system. However, when I attempt to access the Win 8 files from the Win XP system, I get a long delay (about a minute or two) and then it asks me for the User Name & Password. I enter them and then and it works fine.
If I try to print on the printer attached to the Win 8 system from the XP system, I get a printer error unless I have already signed in with the ID & PW when accessing files. It never asks me for an ID & PW before attempting to print.
On the Win 8 system, I have selected "Turn off password protected sharing" in the "Network and Sharing Center/Advanced Sharing Settings".
The Win XP system has previously been correctly sharing files and printers with another XP system for some time and I haven't changed any settings on the XP computer.
Both the XP and Win 8 systems are assigned the same Workgroup name.
I though that Windows 8.1 optimizes its settings if it detets I have an SSD
Well I did a clean install of 8.1 Pro and after I installed everything, I ran the winsat formal command in DOS so it can run WEI and do the needful
I noticed that Superfetch is still enabled/
I have 32 GB of RAM and an SSD why isn't it disabling it?
I know I can do that manually but I am wondering if it is beneficial to keep it on on my setup
This is how my RAM usage is after rebooting and leaving the system idle for 10 minutes:
On Windows 7 my RAM usage would've been much higher indicating that it is loading programs in the prefetch I'm not sure it is really doing anything on Windows 8 even though the service is active and enabled by default
I now have an Internet connection with my XP. The last challenge is USB. Not sure if I am missing something, but I do not see it in the Setup.
P.S. I started this new thread though I did mention USB in my last.
Any way of enabling the built in zip feature but not have zip files displayed as folders in Explorer and wherever else? I use a program that needs to use the zip feature but I really hate how zips show up as folders. I know how to disable the zip feature but that results in my program not being able to utilize zip processing.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my windows 8.1 to windows 8.1 pro as I wanted to enable bitlocker encryption on the laptop.
The issue is that I can't seem to enable or find bitlocker in any of the area's outlined. When I try to right click on the C: drive I don't have an option for bitlocker. When I go into control panel, there's no bitlocker icon. When I do a search on the machine for bitlocker I do get a "manage bitlocker" icon, but it's doesn't do anything when I click on it.
I have followed the tutorial on this site and downloaded/installed the reg files to enable it on a non tpm device. Can see that they did update the policy on the machine, but still no joy.
When I go into PC info on the machine in question I don't see anything about bitlocker. It's like it's not there. Do you have to add a windows feature to enable it?
do you have superprefetch and prefetch enabled? i disabled both and windows8.1 seems faster on my ssd evo pro

On 64-bit Windows 8, the browser frame process (both “modern UI” and Desktop) runs 64-bit.However, for compatibility with plug-ins, IE 10 on the desktop runs 32-bit tabs by default. If the user turns on “Enhanced Protected Mode” in Internet Options, Advanced,he will have 64-bit tabs by default for IE 10 on the Desktop.<Restart of whole computer is needed for the change to take an effect.>
