Apps / Software :: Windows 8.1 Photos App - Unwanted Folders
Apr 17, 2014
I have just started using Win 8.1, and, on opening the Photos app I notice that there are "non" photo folders included.
I discovered that it looks like any folder containing photos or pictures gets added to the app.
Any way to restrict folder additions to those contained in a specific folder on the hard drive,[e.g. " Pictures"]...

how to delete the masses of unwanted foreign 'system fonts' that came with my new Win 8.1 machine.
I know they don't slow up staring time in this version of Windows but they wreck your font selection in word processors. The 'hide' command is already on but it does nothing, they still show up in the font selection.
This system is:-
Asus T200 transformer
Windows 8.1
system is fresh apart from installation of a start menu and word processor.
[I use 6 a month old desktop with XP as my main computer]

The Photos app on my Windows 8.1 Pro PC won't show any pictures either in the Pictures Library or in OneDrive. It only can display folders but not pictures. In other Windows Store apps, another weird things happens. The photos show up but with no thumbnails. I tried a reformat and reinstall and the problem disappeared. That is until I signed in my Microsoft account. The problem comes back.
NOTE: I'm using Hotspot Shield because an error appears every time I install Windows updates or Windows Store apps. I use Hotspot Shield to bypass this error but even disabling it doesn't solve the problem.

First I thought it was slow. Then I got tired of waiting and figured out how to associate all my photos with the windows photo viewer from the desktop apps like I was used to with Windows 7
However, I would like to give it a fair chance to work. So, I am posting here.
When I click on the photo app, it shows some folders, sometimes it kicks me back to the desktop before I can click anytime. Other times, it may show a photo for a few seconds before kicking me back. Either way, this is not acceptable.
The app is not closing. It is still running because if I click the left corner, I see it and can access it again, if over for a second.
Is this experience common. I have had my windows 8 pc a week and I switched over to windows 8.1 about two days after I initially got it setup. I am a very experienced Windows 7 user. I am trying to be open minded about this new operating system.

We recently acquired a few Dell Latitude tablets for use at my work and I'm looking for an app which will easily and quickly allow me to take a picture, draw notes on top of it, and then save the file to be transferred to our server later. We need to document certain conditions at various locations while working in the field and this technique seems to be our best bet. We're currently doing this with ease with our iPads but I can't find anything for Windows 8. I'd be happy using the iPad to do this task but that would mean we would need both tablets since the other program we need is a Windows only program and the reason we bought the tablets in the first place.

Any open source software that can be used by visitors/registered user of my website to upload photos? (similar to fllickr etc.)
I intend to create a photo website dedicated to a special camera. User then should be able to upload, comment and rate photos.
I know I could use flickr, picasa or similar, but I would like to have my own project ;-)
For forums, I use phpbb which is easy to install and maintain.

My laptop is running Win 8.1 x64. On the same home network my PC (Win 7 Pro) is running a new Win 8 x86 install in a VM (VMware Player). Both were set up using the same Microsoft account rather than local accounts. What is sending me apoplectic is that if I change my desktop background on either system it causes the other to change too. If both systems have the same themes available then both will display the same theme. If not then the second system will display its default desktop theme.
I can only think that this is a completely unintended consequence of using a Microsoft account.

Windows 8 waits several seconds before it start my programs that are set to auto start. I would like to make Windows 8 behave like older variant. This new feature is of no value to me and annoying. The apps start too late and steal focus, or I just watch and wait stupidly for the apps to start while the system is basically idle... It's a lot quicke to start the apps manually lot of the, which of course defeats one main reason for auto-start.

Recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 on three PC's on home network but now I'm having a problem on my ASUS VivoTab Smart Tablet.
My main login screen has been setup to show three (3) users but shortly after upgrading, it started showing a fourth user. The user name for this fourth user is "zqtjerxnjfcz". When I clicked on it, it started the customizing process for a new user. As soon as I could I signed out and logged in under my own account and then deleted this new unwanted account but it keeps returning, usually after a restart or signing out and back in.

Instead of storing my photographs on the C drive on my Windows 8 machine, I have them on a powered USB hard drive which is always attached to my PC. In the My Pictures folder in Windows (C:users[name]My Pictures) I've created a shortcut to the photos folder on my USB hard drive. This works fine when I navigate to it using Explorer or any other file exploring software.
However, when I use a photo editing application such as GIMP2, click Open and navigate to the My Pictures folder on my C drive, the shortcut folder is not shown. Other image folders which are actually in that folder are shown. To see the shortcut folder I need to change what is shown from 'All images' to 'All files'. When I do this I can then see the 'My Pictures - Shortcut.lnk'but if I then try and open that folder I receive an error message saying that opening the shorcut failed: unknown file type.
Why this should be? Similar behaviour is exhibited in Photoshop Express. When I select my pictures folder, the folders that are physically in C:users[name]My Pictures are shown but not my shortcut folder so there seems to be no way of accessing the photos on my USB hard drive. Another image editing app I have also ignores the My pictures shortcut folder, so I think it's a Windows thing rather than a problem with the individual apps.
I have View hidden files ticked.

I am a traditionalist and so run permanently in "desktop" mode because I don't like the look and feel of the new Windows 8.
Ever since I installed Windows 8.1 a blank green Microsoft "Store" window pops up from time to time on my desktop. When I click on it, the green is replaced by a normal Store page advertising trending apps, etc.
This unwanted Store pop-up seems to appear at random intervals and is a real nuisance. I certainly never expected to get unwanted advertising pop-ups from a company like Microsoft!
How to get rid of this annoying intrusion?

I've noticed that there are a lot of folders in C:Users<user>AppDataLocalPackages and their names sound like Metro apps. The folder contain subfolder for Metro apps I no longer use and even have uninstalled them.
The question is: why weren't they deleted next to applications uninstalls and is it safe to delete them manually?

I installed a PDF metadata editor from the formerly respectable site Download.com (CNET). Turns out they joined the DARK side:
Despite me DECLINING all dodgy offers by the installer, it STILL installed a bunch of unwanted junk on my machine.
I've now spent an hour on and off trying to get rid of this junk. Just as I thought I was more or less done, I get an "Alert" from the "Microsoft Advanced System Protector" (yeah, right...)
I have of course checked in Add/Remove programs and uninstalled what I could find (although the uninstall hung).
I used HijackThis and deleted all the changes this junkware used. I am trying to restore homepages for my browsers.
I don't use antivirus, and I doubt it would have reacted to this junk which probably passes for real software.

I am trying to delete some network connections that I have never used, how they came into being. They are NGSKM, TRENDnet and G4257
They don't appear in net show: netsh wlan show profiles
The only one that appears is ZFHL2, our local network.
Of course, they are not found if I try to delete them with: netsh wlan delete profile name="TRENDnet"
How do I delete them ?

When I delete either the original or the duplicate, the other file is deleted as well and, when I restore the single example from the recycle bin, both are restored.
My own solution is:-
1) Drag and drop the original file onto its duplicate into the picture folder.
2) Stop creating files on the desktop.
However, I wonder if there is a better way of doing this that would allow me to create files on the desktop again. I often use the desktop to convert RAW photo files, prior to filing them in the picture folder, which may have something to do with this.

I don't know if this is a Windows issue or just an issue with my software but I was using Corel Paint shop pro x6 and I'm not sure what I did but after opening files or using the save to option several times, all of a sudden the window started opening full screen and there doesn't seem to be any way to minimize it.
I tried to see if I could at least drag it some place but it won't move. I tried going to every side and corner to see if I could resize it that way but nothing happens. This is the only program that opens my folders in full screen so perhaps it has nothing to do with Windows but how I can get my folders to open in a small screen where you can move them over or out of the way of something you might be looking at.

I recently installed Windows 8.1 from scratch. After installing Office 2013, I'm getting this error when launching Word: "Word could not create the work file. Check the temp environment variable." If I try to create a new spreadsheet in Excel, I get this error: "Microsoft Excel cannot open or save any more documents because there is not enough available memory or disk space." Memory and disk space are plentiful and definitely not the problem here.
Also, I can't save or open files downloaded with Internet Explorer, which I believe is related (explained below).
I tried running winword.exe /r and re-installing Office, but the problem remains.
I've verified that HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerUser Shell Folders is set to %USERPROFILE%AppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCache in the Registry.
Research seems to indicate that the Temporary Internet Files location in Internet Explorer (!) is the likely cause of the problem. Internet Explorer shows the Current location field of Temporary Internet Folders is blank.
I've tried changing/setting the Temporary Internet Files folder to both C:UsersProfileNameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCache and C:UsersProfileNameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsTemporary Internet Files, but I get this error: "Windows is unable to gather information about the location you have chosen. Please select another, or verify that you have access rights to the location." I'm running an Administrator account.
If I try to open either of those folders in Explorer, I get this error: "C:UsersProfileNameAppDataLocalMicrosoftWindowsINetCache is not accessible. Access is denied."
I've tried Taking Ownership of both folders. I've tried removing the Read-Only flag from both folders. I've tried editing the security permissions and adding my specific profile name (Administrators is already there). I still can't access those folders.

I don't see any option to hide the updates which you don't want to install. In windows 7, one can simply right click and choose hide the update, but no such thing in windows 8.1.

Prior versions of Windows included sample photos, videos and music files from Microsoft.
I have a new install of Windows 8 Home, 64 Bit OEM version and when I look in My Pictures, My Videos, and My Music these libraries are empty. In the past after installing Windows, I used these files to do a quick check to see that sound card and other parts of the system were working. I went to try that in Windows 8 and no files!
I do not know if they are there but in a new location, or if they are no longer included, or if something went wrong with the install, or something else.
I am also not finding any sample photos when I start up the Photo Tile App.

This issue it happens for too long I can't open photos of any kind with the windows photo viewer, I don't know how it happened and I don't remember when. When I try to open nothing happens.. its like something happens for a fraction of a second and nothing. I tried almost everything, well, accept for restore but there is no chance I am doing it the cost is too big.
I just noticed that when i try to view a photo file, two processes pop for a fraction of a sec and immediately disappear, one is COM Surrogate and the other Windows Problem Reporting.

All those programs that are present when you first open a Windows 8 desktop like Reader, Photos, etc. You know, the one's you want to replaces real fast with good programs have stopped working. Not that I want to use them or depend on them but it does bug me they all stopped. I don't see a way to uninstall them if they are not going to work. If they have to remain on the pc I would like them to work in any case.
why all these minimum use programs have stopped. And if the fix is drastic of course I wouldn't attempt it.

If I Right Click on the Photos app on the start menu the option "Turn live tile on/off" is missing. I used Windows 8 before upgrading, and I remember it had the option. I wanted to have a small slideshow of my photo gallery on the live tile.
Other apps (such as mail, weather, store etc) are not missing the option and are working fine. I know that the preview version didn't have this problem.

I am new to Windows 8. I emailed myself a .jpg photo as an email attachment (in yahoo email), from a different computer. When I try to save the attached photo to my own computer, the options are to save as "webpage complete" or as "HTML." I don't want to do either of those. I want to save it as a .jpg-format image in a folder of my choice on my computer.
Also, when I click on the attached photo, it opens in some unnamed Windows 8 imaging app that takes up the whole screen. I don't know what I am supposed to do with it (there are no explanations or options, or even any text that tells what the app is called or what it is supposed to be doing), and I can't get rid of it unless I press the keyboard key with the picture of a window on it, and then get back into my browser (Chrome). If I knew the name of this intrusive imaging app, maybe I could uninstall it, or at least reconfigure Windows 8 to make it save images in the format I want them in and in the folder where I want it to save them, so I can manipulate them the way I want to (in my case, with Paint Shop Pro).
