Unwanted Windows 8 Desktop Synchronization

Aug 6, 2014

My laptop is running Win 8.1 x64. On the same home network my PC (Win 7 Pro) is running a new Win 8 x86 install in a VM (VMware Player). Both were set up using the same Microsoft account rather than local accounts. What is sending me apoplectic is that if I change my desktop background on either system it causes the other to change too. If both systems have the same themes available then both will display the same theme. If not then the second system will display its default desktop theme.

I can only think that this is a completely unintended consequence of using a Microsoft account.

Unwanted Duplication Of New Files On Desktop To Picture Folder?

Feb 10, 2014

When I delete either the original or the duplicate, the other file is deleted as well and, when I restore the single example from the recycle bin, both are restored.

My own solution is:-

1) Drag and drop the original file onto its duplicate into the picture folder.
2) Stop creating files on the desktop.

However, I wonder if there is a better way of doing this that would allow me to create files on the desktop again. I often use the desktop to convert RAW photo files, prior to filing them in the picture folder, which may have something to do with this.

Stop Synchronization Of Mouse Buttons Between Devices

Sep 15, 2014

As left hander when I use a desktop I use the right mouse button as my primary button.

When using a laptop it's easier for me to keep the track pad buttons set with the left button as my primary button (it's nearest my dominant thumb!)

This hasn't been a problem until I got a win 8 laptop when it started to synchronize the settings on my latop to desktop and vice versa. This is a good thing in normal circumstances but for me it's a pain as I have to keep changing the setting depending on what machine I'm using.

Is it possible to disable the mouse synchronization whilst retaining the synchronization of other settings?

Maintenance :: Windows 8 - How To Disable Unwanted Autostart Delay

Dec 7, 2012

Windows 8 waits several seconds before it start my programs that are set to auto start. I would like to make Windows 8 behave like older variant. This new feature is of no value to me and annoying. The apps start too late and steal focus, or I just watch and wait stupidly for the apps to start while the system is basically idle... It's a lot quicke to start the apps manually lot of the, which of course defeats one main reason for auto-start.

Accounts :: Windows 8.1 - Unwanted User Account Showing Up

Nov 15, 2013

Recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 on three PC's on home network but now I'm having a problem on my ASUS VivoTab Smart Tablet.

My main login screen has been setup to show three (3) users but shortly after upgrading, it started showing a fourth user. The user name for this fourth user is "zqtjerxnjfcz". When I clicked on it, it started the customizing process for a new user. As soon as I could I signed out and logged in under my own account and then deleted this new unwanted account but it keeps returning, usually after a restart or signing out and back in.

I discovered that it looks like any folder containing photos or pictures gets added to the app.

Any way to restrict folder additions to those contained in a specific folder on the hard drive,[e.g. " Pictures"]...

Unwanted Microsoft Store Popup In Win 8.1

Oct 25, 2013

I am a traditionalist and so run permanently in "desktop" mode because I don't like the look and feel of the new Windows 8.

Ever since I installed Windows 8.1 a blank green Microsoft "Store" window pops up from time to time on my desktop. When I click on it, the green is replaced by a normal Store page advertising trending apps, etc.

This unwanted Store pop-up seems to appear at random intervals and is a real nuisance. I certainly never expected to get unwanted advertising pop-ups from a company like Microsoft!

How to get rid of this annoying intrusion?

Security :: How To Uninstall Bunch Of Unwanted Junk

Jul 11, 2014

I installed a PDF metadata editor from the formerly respectable site Download.com (CNET). Turns out they joined the DARK side:

Despite me DECLINING all dodgy offers by the installer, it STILL installed a bunch of unwanted junk on my machine.

I've now spent an hour on and off trying to get rid of this junk. Just as I thought I was more or less done, I get an "Alert" from the "Microsoft Advanced System Protector" (yeah, right...)

I have of course checked in Add/Remove programs and uninstalled what I could find (although the uninstall hung).

I used HijackThis and deleted all the changes this junkware used. I am trying to restore homepages for my browsers.

I don't use antivirus, and I doubt it would have reacted to this junk which probably passes for real software.

Of course, they are not found if I try to delete them with: netsh wlan delete profile name="TRENDnet"

Network / Sharing :: Cannot Remote Desktop FROM Windows 8 Laptop To XP Desktop

Feb 9, 2014

I'm a Windows 8. I'm trying to RDP from my new Windows 8 laptop to an XP desktop, both of which are on my home network. When I try, I get the below error...

Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons:

1) Remote access to the server is not enabled
2) The remote computer is turned off
3) The remote computer is not available on the network

As best as I can tell, none of the conditions above is true. Here is what I have looked at so far...

- On the XP machine, in System settings / Remote, "Allow users to connect to this system" is Checked. I have successfully RDP'd to this machine in the past, but this is the first time I've tried from the Windows 8 machine.

- From the Windows 8 machine, I can ping the XP machine, and I can access a shared drive on the XP machine. In fact, I've been moving files between the XP machine and the Windows 8 machine, in both directions, all day.

- Just to eliminate another potential issue, I have set the username and password on the Windows 8 machine to match that on the XP machine.

Incidentally, XP machine is running XP Pro, 2002, SP3.

Scaling (DPI) Of Windows 8 Desktop Changes

However whenever I restart the PC, or turn on the PC, all of the desktop programs and cursor are incorrect (ie. everything bigger than it should be) on my left hand monitor. Changing the main display, or changing the resolution back and fro fixes the problem, but gets annoying after a while.

Windows 8 Snap Desktop

Jun 26, 2013

If you have skype, or evernote (for Windows 8 desktops) notice that when you near it to the edge, it "snaps" so to speak. THIS IS NOT THE SNAP where you snap to the right or to the left!

I am just lost as to how this came to be. Is this application-specific? I would very much prefer all my applications/windows to snap to the edge as they are.

Desktop Is Black After Booting Windows 8

Jul 15, 2013

I've got Windows 8 64 bit and I'm running it on a Gigabyte U2242 ultrabook on the max resolution 1 Yesterday, after booting up, I saw that the desktop is black, the icons are black/ invisible too, I can, however, see the taskbar.

On the other hand, the tile menu works just as intended.

The laptop has two video cards: Intel HD 4000 and a Geforce 650M, I've uninstalled the drivers for both under safe mode and reinstalled the latest ones.

I've read somewhere on the nvidia forums that the geforce driver can't be removed because v.304 comes with Windows 8. Is this true?
