Maintenance :: Windows 8 Bad FPS While Screen Recording / Gaming
May 29, 2013I run a triple monitor setup and in windows 7 i was able to be playing a game on my center monitor while screen capturing streaming video on the other with camtasia without any lag at all. Now in windows 8 when i do the same my fps is instantly cut in half in the game. The only time i had something similar happen in 7 was with aero on and it still wasn't anywhere near this big of a fps drop. I have all up to date drivers and an identical setup to what i was running in 7.

Jul 9, 2013I do a lot of scheduled recording with my Windows 8/x64, tuner card, Xbox extender set up. I've been using MCE Standby Tool to be able to automatically go in and out of standby or hibernate mode for unattended recording. It worked great until I upgraded to Windows 8 and now won't go into Standby again automatically after recording a program.

Jun 7, 2014 Unfortunately, other than simply cutting out or fading volume, or just plain refusing to record, Windows doesn't give any message at all. There's no error code, or anything.
I've tested the mic. The recording is on there, but Windows 8 has, on a number of occasions, deleted or skewed my recording in some way. My question is, Do I need some additional app? So far it seems I've had nothing but problems with Windows 8, particularly where sound is involved. The sound card, by Realtek, seems useless. The Realtek Manager shows an empty page.
I downloaded Easy-Hi-Q Recorder. It seems to me this is for an analog mic. I had a similar problem with Steinberg Cubase.
Any experience with recording, esp. in Windows 8. I'm about to give up on Windows 8 altogether if things don't work out.

It is impossible to monitor a line in or Mic recording with out being subjected to a significant sound delay... Being a musician this makes my work impossible... Is the issue with the OS ??? Audio :: Sound From One Speaker Only On USB
Jul 2, 2013Yesterday, I bought a pair of Samson Studio GT studio monitors. which connect to my computer via USB. However, I'm only getting sound out of one monitor/speaker, that would be the right side with the power cable. I've checked the speaker wires and made sure they were hooked up correctly for polarity. There are no drivers for these speakers on SamsonTech.com. Windows sees everything correctly, as these speakers have a built in audio interface for audio production, which is what I do.
This is definitely not an issue with the speakers, because I managed to hook up my computer to the speakers'/monitors' aux RCA inputs and got sound out of BOTH speakers! What is most interesting is that headphone output from from the SPEAKERS/MONITORS functions the same in both cases. (One case with audio out the right speaker, the other case with audio out of both). However, these speakers (I'm just going to call them that from now on) have two headphone outputs. When hooked up via USB, and when listening on headphones, the phone output to the right only outputs right channel audio, and the left only outputs left channel audio. But when hooked up via the RCA inputs, both headphone outs put out as stereo.
I suspect there is something within my Windows 8 installation that's screwy. I can use these via the RCA inputs coming from my PC's sound card, but I would like to get this working via USB, as mentioned earlier, these speakers have an built in audio interface that I want to use.

Jul 28, 2013I currently use Win 8 on my main PC and on my laptop, I need to connect a Bluetooth speaker to either of them but keep running into the same problems.The PC is an Asus P8Z77V De-luxe, with its own Broadcom WIFI and Bluetooth. The Laptop is a Lenovo Z480, again with Broadcom WIFI and Bluetooth.
Whenever I try to connect the speaker, the device is detected correctly, then as soon as I click on it to install/pair, Win 8 begins to start pairing, but then shows the device as "offline" It does the same with the PC and the Laptop.
The speaker is working fine as is the Bluetooth - it connects flawlessly with my Samsung S3 - I have updated my Bluetooth drivers, uninstalled them, reinstalled them and nothing allows the pairing to complete. I have a Bluetooth headset and it has the same problem when I try to connect to my PC, but works ok with my laptop.

I don't like to unplug them every time I'm done, that's too confusing and more importantly, I FORGET ALL THE TIME. play my "Free Alarm Clock" through the speakers despite having headphones plugged in. I use it not only to wake up but also to remind me of other daily things.
I'm not looking for something to play sound through headphones and speakers simultaneously. That would defeat the purpose.

Jun 8, 2014I run a 7.0 speaker system connected in multi-channel analogue mode to my Creative X-Fi Titanium.
I set my speaker settings on Windows 8.1 disabling the subwoofer and checking the full-range speakers checkbox to allow the low frequencies to be handled by my satellite speakers.
I've made no changes to the settings and yet I suddenly experienced a decrease in bass after a system restart.
When I checked the speaker settings I noticed that checking/unchecking the full-ranged speakers and subwoofer checkboxes no longer made any difference. i.e. the signal still gets passed to the centre/subwoofer port on the soundcard.
Clicking on the subwoofer on the window, I can only hear sounds from my front left/right speakers. Previously, unchecking the subwoofer checkbox sends the low frequencies to the available full-range speakers.
I have tried using an optical connection on Dolby Digital and it gives the same problem.
I am running the latest driver version available.
Audio :: No Sound From Speaker / Headphones / Can't Find Any Errors
Jul 7, 2014A couple of days ago, I decided to move my tower from my desk to the floor. Everything was working beautifully up until then. I opened it up and removed some dust. After putting it back together, the monitor wouldn't register anything. I left it for a day, came back, and the monitor magically worked again. The wifi card stopped working, but importantly, the sound was working. After leaving it for a night, I came back, reseated the wifi card, and magically, the card worked again. But now, the sound won't work! It's been several days, and this is the situation:
* The sound is not muted. When I press the speaker icon in the tray, the green volume bar moves up and down, as though sound is playing
* If I troubleshoot the 'playing audio', it says that no peripherals are plugged in. I found that if I went into Realtek HD Audio Manager and disabled 'front panel jack detection' in the connection settings, the computer suddenly apparently realises that I do have speakers connected, and when I troubleshoot audio again, it doesn't find any errors. I have to do this every time I restart, but the sound still doesn't work.
* I've downloaded and reinstalled the Realtek HD Codecs twice.
* In Device Manager, it recognises the integrated sound card:
(the PCI Simple Communications Controller device is Intel Management Engine Interface)
* I've disabled and enabled the devices many times, but no dice.
* I've reinstalled the chipset drivers from the motherboard manufacturer
* I've gone into my computer and unplugged and re-plugged any wires that may have come loose.
It's the holidays, and I want to immerse myself in video games. But that's pretty much impossible with no sound .
Screen Fades In Steps Between Apps / Desktop / Start Screen
Dec 14, 2013I've tried just about everything, but can't seem to find a setting to stop this action. The screen on my laptop (Sony Flip 15A, intel4400/geforce735) seems to increase and decrease in brightness between screens. It's rather annoying not just because of the change, but also because it takes several seconds to occur and it occurs in discrete steps. I'm running the latest drivers from both intel and nvidia. I've tried turning off adaptive brightness and disabling the sensor service, and all effects (fade in, UAC, etc) have been turned off. A video of the condition is shown below:

It even happen when no programs are opening/closing - for example, if I view a dark background web page and then a lighter background, the brightness shifts. I can't imagine how awful this will be in photoshop.

Dec 18, 2013About three days ago, all new style apps stopped working. I click on the tile, get a deep blue screen, and nothing else. On the left side of the screen, I can see the app as if it is working (just the name of the app, not content), so I can close the window and get back to desktop. The same applies to the STORE app. The only tiles that work, are the links to desktop applications, which open correctly on the desktop. The fault also affects all windows system apps. For example if I search on the start screen for "windows update", I can access "Windows update" as it just opens a window on the desktop, but if I click on "Windows update settings" nothing happens. The same is true with all windows system apps that open in the new start screen system.
I've uninstalled two Microsoft updates that were installed over the past three days, no change. I uninstalled AVAST, no change, so I reinstalled it! I tried restoring the system, but found that I had only one restore, and that was corrupted. Very strange. Without access to many windows system apps, the computer is really limited. The desktop seems to be working OK. I can't refresh the PC, as firstly it is a system app that runs from the start screen, and secondly because I upgraded from win 8 to 8.1 online, this can't be done anyway, as I don't have a disc. I'm really trying to avoid reinstalling windows 8!
(Pavilion dv6, i7 processor, 6GB ram, originally win7, then I upgraded to win 8 and now 8.1. I've been running 8.1 for some months without problems, just occasionally on start-up from sleep, I get "error in non-cached memory" BSOD, and the system restarts.)

Aug 11, 2014I've had windows 8 for a bit, but since I've installed the OS not a single one of my windows apps will work. I've tried a lot of options and none fix it. I will open up a app ( windows store app or PC settings for example) and it will open and display the icon and blown up screen then immediately minimizes and will not allow me to maximize it. I'm so tired of it! I can't download any new apps or update my old ones let alone use any of them. I ran a basic trouble shoot through Microsoft and it came up at one point saying I need a Microsoft account. which is crazy because I've put in my CD key like 50 times and registered it when I put the OS on this computer . My Email app just show a black screen.
XE currency loads forever and my Windows Store just flicker parts of the screen.
Metro shows weird search results.
I got an Acer 8935G so there only exists one VGA driver for this laptop. I installed it a couple of days ago and I'm suspecting this to be the cause since it wasnt like this before I installed the driver.
But I hope this is not the cause since with this laptop model, I dont have any choice when it comes to display drivers.

Jan 10, 2013This happened after I uninstalled all my metro apps this morning, rebooted then reinstalled them. Chrome also updated in the meantime.
They're the only icons that are broke so clearly something has happened between now and then to stop icons displaying properly for new programs.
Is it worth rebuilding icon cache? Not sure the icons for metro are the same as filetype icons in Explorer though.

Jun 23, 2013I'd like to know if any of you guys have experienced this issue where when you try to open a metro app you get the splash screen for it and then just a few seconds later you're sent back to the start screen with no explanation whatsoever. It's doing my head in since I can't seem to find a fix - Google returns lots of posts about this issue coming from the win 8 beta, but none of the fixes I've seen seem to work.
It also doesn't happen with all apps. I can open the Music, Messaging or Games apps just fine, but if I try to open the metro Reader app or the Hulu/Netflix apps I downloaded from the store they just won't get pass this screen.
Getting Apps Screen When Try To Go To Start Screen?
Mar 18, 2014As I understand it, when I it the Windows key or mouse-click lower left while in the desktop, it is supposed to take me to the Start Screen. Indeed, it did work this way for some time. However, now, when I do either, it takes me to the Apps Screen and I have to do something (one of several) to switch to the Start Screen. Once there, if I hit Windows key or click lower left repeatedly, it goes Start Screen -> Apps Screen -> Desktop -> Apps Screen -> Desktop, etc. I think this is wrong. It is certainly not what I want; but my searching has not run across any other mention of this behavior. I don't want it to go to the Apps Screen when I hit Windows key or click in lower left. I only want to go there if I specifically do something to get there from the Start screen. (E.g., little arrow, Ctrl-Tab) How do I get back to the Start Screen being the default choice between these two?
The behavior changed some time after I upgraded to Windows 8.1; but I am not sure if it was immediately after. I suspect not. I've only had the computer for a week, so I am still becoming accustomed to Windows 8. (Coming from XP and 7 and having read a lot of negative comments, I was expecting that I would hate Windows 8. As it turns out, I don't understand the presumed problems. The functionality of Windows 7 is still there. The Start Screen is actually nicer than the Start button
