View 3 RepliesWindows 8 device (Dell XPS 12 i7 running Windows 8.1 Pro). I like the touch input when it is flat in tablet mode, but when I plug a USB mouse into it when I am at my desk, I want the mouse inputs to be treated exactly like finger inputs on the touch screen. For example, scrolling by touching/clicking anywhere in a window or the ability to flick things using my mouse like I can with my finger. Simply using the mouse makes everything behave like it did in Windows 7: Clicking and dragging selects things instead of scrolling in Office 2013. I don't want this, I want it behave like Android does when I plug a mouse into it: Just like a finger was there.
I have looked everywhere for such a setting, but I cannot find one. How can I achieve this? I want all mouse inputs to be treated exactly like touch inputs.

For months, I have used HDMI to connect to my Vizio TV .
Suddenly, the connection began giving e problems. I tried playing with the setting, setting the monitor selection to the TV. Now, when I connect the HDMI cable, both the tv says 'no connection' and the laptop screen is black. The option I used to change the settings is gone.

I've bought an HDMI cable to connect my laptop to TV, i've gone into the control panel and checked that "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices" are both allowed and still i dont seem to get an option for HDMI for audio. The picture has come through fine, but nothing I do with the audio seems to work.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a Lenovo laptop running Windows 8.1. I run a number of VB6 programs. One is an estimating system that makes use of .dat files. When I first install the program and the files, everything works fine.
The problem comes when I 'over-write' a .dat file with a newer version, with some basic cost changes (the file updated on a different computer which contains VB6). As I 'paste' from a USB stick it asks if I want to over-write, which I obviously agree to.
However, as I run the program, I still appear to be using data from the previous file! The latest update figures are ignored.
To check this out further, I have even deleted (removed completely) the .dat file from the appropriate directory, but when running the program it still inputs data from the original file.
This leads me to believe there must be another copy of the file open somewhere (hence the phantom!), possibly as a 'last used' reference.
I have been on to the taskbar and ensured I have unchecked the two boxes about retaining files etc.
I have a Gateway laptop running Windows 8. I have an auto diagnostics program called Auto Enginuity that I have "add ons" purchased for, when I type to put in the feature unlock key, after a couple days it will no longer be activated. Then when I installed the 8.1 update it will no longer accept the activation key, I can type the key in and it does not hold it. On the same note, I'm running Microsoft Streets and Trips gps software and when I go to update it,it updates like normal but after the update it still says update needed, like it doesn't "hold" any updates or key codes that I install.

I have spent hours installing and uninstalling drivers from the Toshiba and Intel sites. Tech support said to return it but I have just spent 2 days installing software. I never took a break to watch Netflix.
I have a backup program I want to run automatically every night. The problem is that it requires approval to run by the UAC.
Is there anyway to allow one program to run without UAC intervention without disabling UAC for everything?
I have a recovery partition and use it quite often if I encounter any problems which are very few.
I use CuteFTP to upload to a server but like all the programs, when I do a recovery the software is lost as well and I have to do a reinstall of them including CuteFTP.
There is only a certain amount of times that the program can be activated, (obviously to stop it being installed on multiple pc's), which is where my problems lay.
I want to install the program on a second internal hard drive or on an external hard drive so it doesn't get removed when I do a system recovery. What I don't know is how do I link to CuteFTP after the recovery has completed.
So to sum up, how to link to a program previously installed on other than the C: drive ?
Any way to automate program installation? For example if I have a fresh install of windows 8 and I have the installer for ccleaner, AVG and malwarebytes. Is there a way for me to take those .exe files and automate the entire installation process? I heard AutoHotkey might be able to do this but have not returned many search results.

I go to add/remove programs, select it in the list and click uninstall. That window comes up and says please wait while Windows configures etc. etc. then it just disappears and nothing happens. The program doesn't uninstall.
I've never had this problem with any other software before...what gives? How can I get Windows to uninstall it? Should I use something like this? [Solved]Acronis Disk Director 11 Home Build 11.0.2121 Completely Uninstalled or is that spyware/viruses/unnecessary?
I have some old XP graphics software that I need to run every few days. The problem is that it automatically goes full screen at start up and here is no way to reduce it.
When the software was written 4:3 monitors were all there was, so going full screen was fine. But, now with a 16:9 monitor it stretches everything and makes stuff very difficult to make sense of.
I am looking for something that will run the XP stuff in it's own work space so I can adjust the size of that window and in return, adjust the graphics size and shape back to 4:3.
I tried using Virtual-PCs like VMWare Player and VirtualBox but they both seem overkill and made the software run very slow as I had to use my old copy of win98 as the Guest OS. I can't afford to buy a copy of XP or win7 to use as a Guest.
I have been using a program called Family Tree Legends for years now, but just recently when I try to open the program I receive the following message: "This program has been damaged, possibly by a bad sector of the hard drive or a virus. Please reinstall it." I have removed the program and reinstalled it several times and it still won't work. It's a family tree program that I used almost daily and now I'm concerned I lost everything. I even tried to open the program via the administrator function but it still won't work.

Have tried compatibility as well as clicking on properties and clicking on run as administrator.
In C:Program FilesWindowsApps there are atleast 4 instance of fresh paint, 4 for reddit to go and the same for many apps.
For most of the apps, you cant delete them by generic methods, unlocker has to be used.
xbox video and xbox music apps are not getting updated (frozen in "pending state" all night long).

I am having trouble trying to find out how to keep adobe file showing on top of program in use.
As an example, I use an on line portal for my work and when I click on the program button to view an invoice it opens in an adobe file but then stays behind the program screen, I then have to go to the task bar to bring it to the front so it can be printed.
I am planning to get a new computer soon and would like to securely overwrite the information from deteted files. I tries using Eraser, but I get a message saying I need to run as administrator, even after I run it as administrator. I think it doesn't work with Windows 8.1. Is there a tool that I can use that will overwrite information about already-deleted files, including the filenames?

I just got a Windows 8 laptop and now the program crashes or hangs whenever I start to type I get maybe 1 or 2 characters out and then it hangs.
I saw a similar post in the Win 7 forum but there was no final answer or solution and it was posted quite some time ago. The only response to the user was to check the Event Viewer. So I tried that and the below is what I got back but unsure what to do with this info.
I am using a now no longer supported version of this program I even tried mailing them and they refuse to do any sort of update. So the software people won't do anything to try and resolve this issue so that is why I am hoping I can fix the issue. And the newer version stinks so refuse to use the newer version.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI d/ld the trial version of Win 8 32 bit specifically to see if a DOS program that I have would run in Win 8 32bit.
To my surprise it doesn't run, or at least run correctly. I get the warning about running a 16 bit program so I OK it.
Then it tells me the program can't be run in a window or full screen. It might as well say it won't freaking run at all that would be more accurate!
Odd that PC World Mag touts Win 8 as being able to "run your DOS programs" just like you did before! There was also a reference to something being in Control Panel to enable 16 bit programs.... again no joy there I see nothing in CP in my trial version.
Sure I can run the program in a VM like I do on Win 7 and yes I can run it on XP Pro just fine. But it would be nice to have correct information about what the OS can and can't do.
This program shows 2 Macrium reflects although programs in the control panel only shows one.
PATCHMYPC shows a 5.2 and a 5.2.6249.
The program shows 5.2 so I tried removing the other and both were removed.I ran a system restore and both are back.
I'm running windows 8 x64 and when I open 'Programs and Features' to uninstall a program, the 'Uninstall' button that is usually next to the 'Organize' button is missing. Also when I try to right click on most programs and left click the 'Uninstall' option, I get the message "An error occurred while trying to uninstall X. It may have already been uninstalled. Would you like to remove X from the Programs and Features list?" However, those programs have not been uninstalled.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've installed Quicken 2004 on Windows 8.1 in compatibility mode for Windows XP 3 to run as administrator. Everything seems to work well. All my data appears to have been restored including Home Inventory. I can download bank data.
Automatic backup works. I tested this by changing the system date to trigger the backup.
The infuriating thing is I cannot do a manual backup from the file menu. The dialogue box opens. I can complete the relevant fields but when I click OK the program freezes. There are no error messages.
Not sure if this is a Windows issue e.g. permissions or Quicken issue e.g looking for a file that doesn't exist. I have checked the 'Ready for archive' box of the folders, sub-folders, and files property boxes.
Are there any settings in Win 8.1 that I need to change to allow a program to write to a drive when it is running in compatibility mode for Windows XP 3 as administrator?

View 8 Replies View RelatedBackground: I have been using windows since 3.11 when I was in second grade and we got rid of our DOS box. I consider myself a proficient user to highly proficient user, having built 4 of my own machines. I have installed Office 2010 Professional and the program works.
Setup: Lenovo ideapad y500 purchased January 2013 with Windows 8
Problem: Windows will not allow me to set Word 2010 as my default program for opening .docx or other valid formats. I can open the documents from within the program, just not by default.
Steps Taken:
1) Right-click file > choose default program > Word 2010 not available > browse for and specify location > set program to default. Result = System Message "This app can't run on your pc."
2) Consulted Microsoft support site to search for solution. Same result.
Desired Resolution: how to set that default application. All of you who read this are also annoyed with Microsoft's awful customer service.
I have chosen notepad as default program for .dat file, what can I do to set it to open with "unknown application" like I never open it before?

I get an error that I don't have permissions.
So, I take ownership of the entire program files directory and all subdirectories and files under it.
So, now I am the owner of the whole directory, but I still can't move/copy the file into.
I am also the owner of the source file; and of course I'm logged under the same name as the owner.
