Just got my hands on a brand new ASUS K95VB notebook on behalf of a friend. I used a USB with Windows 8.1 on it in order to format the hard drive and install Windows. The hard drive is 3TB. I remember trying to install Windows using the UEFI option in the usb startup menu but that didnt work so I proceeded on the non-uefi option.
Now the problem is that only 2 TB are shown and the remaining 1 TB is shown only in device manager as not assigned...
If I understand correctly, the BIOS should be in UEFI mode and then the hard drive should be converted to GPT and then install Windows.
But, no option in BIOS for UEFI to be enabled whatsoever. What on earth should I do?
I am trying to boot from USB in order to start using Ubuntu but my problem is that when I go to the advanced settings - troubleshoot - there is no UEFI Firmware Settings, which, from what I have gathered is necessary to be able to boot Ubuntu from my USB flash drive. So far the solution that most people have is that there is no UEFI on that particular computer/type of windows 8, and on the startup screen to press f2, f11, esc, etc but there is no indicator as to what key is is on the ACER splash screen, similar to this. scn101.jpg
My bios shows uefi boot option but no uefi shell... I enabled uefi boot option and booted my dvd it asked me to partition my hd using a GPT format... I even did so so... but when I run
Code: bcdedit /enum
In elevated command prompt it shows me this
Code: Windows Boot Manager -------------------- identifier {bootmgr} device partition=DeviceHarddiskVolume1 description Windows Boot Manager
[Code] .....
The bold line means my system does not boot from efi... isn't it?
I just built a desktop with a sabertooth x79 motherboard, and am running Windows 8.1 pro 64-bit. When I click the UEFI BIOS Firmware live tile via the change PC settings>update and recovery>recovery>etc. my computer reboots normally to Windows and will not open BIOS. I have tried accessing it using the delete and f2 keys, but this does nothing either.
I am up to date in terms of my BIOS, and am definitely running UEFI and not legacy.
I have hp notebook with windows 8 OS. When I plugged in the charger the display totally disappears and the screen has black for only 1, 2 seconds. And the same situation is when i removed the charger. But this is not happened when i was using windows 7. Is this a problem or a feature of windows 8.
I have my main nbook (MSI GT683R-261CS), which have UEFI (AMI Aptio). However when I try to install Windows to (pre-created) GPT GUID sytem boot partition, Windows installation program kicks me to balls, that it can't be installed there. In UEFI setup, there is no option to switch between MBR and GPT boot. Is there any utility, which will tell me, if my machine supports booting from GPT GUID?
I proceed in creating system boot GUID GPT by something like this:
Code: rescan list disk select disk[=n] detail disk list partition select partition[=n/l] detail partition
So this morning my dad went to power off his ASUS K55N Notebook, and it didn't turn off correctly, the screen went black, but the system stayed powered on (had to perform a hard shutdown). He didn't perform any Windows Update(s) or install new drivers prior to this, he didn't change anything, and just now it did the same thing.
the Notebook was performing perfectly fine before today.
Attached is the .zip generated by the SF Diagnostic Tool.
I have the Asus Netbook and I updated the software.
But now it has completed its updating but the screen freezes, I can't touch screen anything and only can lock and unlock the screen. It also cannot shut down, so do I wait for it to run out of battery?
For the last week or so, I've been having issues with my ASUS notebook disconnecting from my wireless network or having a limited connection. This would happen maybe twice a day, but eventually I went online and I found that I had an outdated driver for my Intel Centrino Wireless N-2230, and as soon as I downloaded the latest driver, my notebook would disconnect every 5 minutes or so. Running the troubleshooter just keeps returning the same thing; Default gateway not available. It also does this annoying thing where it'll disconnect and reconnect over and over again, so quickly that the network sharing center can't even register it's happening. I've tried resetting the WINSOCK, IPv4 TCP/IP, and IPv6 TCP/IP stacks, I've tried a clean boot to see if it was a startup program affecting my connections, and I've changed my power settings so they don't turn off my adapter. I even tired booting my computer in safe mode, which didn't work.

I have a ASUS 360 notebook touchscreen with Windows 8. Somehow when using the internet the screen has gotten stuck being Zoomed in all the way. I've tried using the touchscreen to undo the zoom but that doesn't work. When I open up the internet in the desktop mode the screen is normal size. How to undo the zoomed.
Bought a new laptop almost a year ago, i was never able to find the cause of the crashes.
Here some specs
- Intel i7-3537U CPU - Asus K56CB motherboard - NVIDIA GeForce GT 740m Dedicated GPU - Intel HD Graphics 4000 Integrated GPU - 4gb 1600 Ram, single stick - Windows 8.1 (had the same problem with win 8)
On every game i play i get random freezes, random crashes, random BSODs, some games do crash more frequently than others, I've tried older drivers, I've also formatted my pc but the problem is still there...I am not using any antivirus, windows defender is enough for me.
What gets on my nerves the most is that even on old games like quake live do crash and sometime it also gives me BSODs, the fps are constant and quite high but i randomly get freezes (about 0,5 - 1 second long)...
another example, im playing SMITE, i get 80-150 fps but the game crashes every 2-5 mins, this game rarely gives me BSODs, when im lucky the game wont crash for 20-30min, but its very rare. the gpu can reach 80-85C. With "crash" i mean black screen with a window saying "Game.exe has stopped working"
There are other odds things happening on this notebook, for example i cant access to the bios while booting, i can only access to it once i log to my windows account, another strange thing is when i left click any file sometime it takes 10-15 seconds to get the "open, open with, copy, paste, cut etc.. window opened". I've also noticed that sometime while gaming my disk usage get to 100% for an instant and when that happens i get a lag spike/freeze...
If no way to find the source of my problems ill build a desktop and than ill keep sending the notebook to warranty until they fix it . I've still got 1 year of warranty, I've also sent it once already but they only changed the hard disk, and it didn't solve the problem too ...
I have windows 7 already installed.my hard disk have 3 partitions and there are data in them.so,if i want to install windows 8.1 with uefi do I need to format all my partitions or only the windows 7 installed partition?
I cannot seem to access the bios at all with windows 8.1 and my gtx 780 ti. When I connect the hdmi to my gtx 670, I can see the bios screen and can change the config but with the hdmi in my 780 ti I get a black screen until the dual boot windows selection. I've disable fast boot and what else to do.
I have windows 8.1 installed on 120gb ssd. I also have a 1tb HDD too. So I was trying to install Hackintosh/Linux when I noticed that the System Reserved partition was on my HDD instead of the SSD. So, I used easybtc to migrate my boot files to my SSD. I deleted the system reserved partition. Now I want to convert my BIOS to UEFI. I have Z87 pro mobo.
I tried this tutorial: [URL] ....
But it seems to be geared at the C drive, where I don't have room for that 350mb as disk utility wont let me shrink it.
Edit: would downloading a third party partitioner, shrinking C about 350mb, or whatever is the minimum, and then use that new space as described in the guide work?
what settings are required in the UEFI Bios to run recovery USB/ disks or Linux live CDs. It all used to be so simple. The manufacturer seems unaware that it supplies UEFI systems - so I am working blind. Have tried boot CDs and USBs but all have booted straight into Windows to date. I don't wish to change settings I have no understanding of.
I have a Medion /Lenovo desktop with an AMI UEFI Bios (12 July 2012) and Aptio Setup.
The following seem relevant are supplied as enabled in "Bios":
Intel Rapid Startup Technology Quiet Boot Boot Select Mode [UEFI] UEFI Hard Disk BBS Priorities - Boot Option #1 - Windows Boot Manager Secure Boot - Secure Boot Mode [Standard]
What do these all mean and what effect do they have on how Windows 8 runs and how boot drives run?
how to change my BIOS into UEFI. I tried to flash a UEFI BIOS file attached on Acer website but it wont start flashing. The latest version of UEFI installer is not responding when I want to flash it, the older version said I need to have the same type of BIOS installed. how to install UEFI on my system?
I have Lenovo Essential G480 core i5 released in 2012 . In Bios settings it shows only "UEFI enable or disable " . I enabled it and installed Windows8 in uefi boot Using uefi enabled usb . I read on internet that Laptop manufacturers name appears instead of Windows 8 logo on uefi boot, it does not happen in my case also booting has gotten more slower .. and computer is not as smooth as it was before with old bios , it stuck sometimes now..i also checked my bios by "msinfo32" it shows my bios is UEFI... still its not like the real thing at all ...
Bought a new laptop with preinstalled Windows 8, didn't like it, went into laptop bios, think i deleted some drivers or commands to get me into windows 8 again. dont see any driver options, boot options priorities and cant add new ones
Think i deleted the default one, have nothing under boot options. Once I started the machine it goes right to the bios the boot devise driver into windows i think is missing.
Unrelated images not mine, but kinda looked like this: [URL] .....
Right before I performed a clean install of Windows 8.1 x64 on my Inspiron 3520, I switched to the Legacy BIOS *facepalm*.
When I enter the legacy BIOS and enabled "secure boot", I performed a restart that gave the following message "internal hard disk drive not found, to resolve this issue, try to reseat the drive. No bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2 enter setup menu, F5 enter PSA". Of course, when I go back into the BIOS and disable secure boot, it reverts back to legacy and boots up Windows 8 just fine. What I'd like to know is, how can I revert back to UEFI so I can change the boot-up option and perform a clean install under UEFI.
On my computer there is a pre-installed Windows 8 which works fine for UEFI boot (Secure boot not necessary).
Now when I switch in UEFI setup at boot time the UEFI mode into the CSM (BIOS) mode and restart then Windows 8 is not starting any more.
As far as I find out an UEFI-based Windows 8 can only boot with UEFI mode enabled.
So my question is: Can I turn an existing UEFI based Windows 8 installation into an CSM/BIOS based installation (=a Win8 which boots successfully even when I enable CSM in UEFI setup) ?
it's getting boot and install only in EFI mode. after trying to reinstall it won't allow me to select the disk partition, as it gave me the error "
Windows 8 cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On EFI systems, Windows can only be installed to GPT disks." i tried all the given solutions on GOogle. even i cannot recover or refresh using windows 8 environment. many times it gives me BSOD. cannot vonvert to MBR as it says it cannot be done on virtual HDD.
tried many things nothing works, need to install windows 8 after every 1 or 2weeks, many a times my BCD data gets corrupt, and windows wont start. Also tried many things to repair this, but only thing that works is reinstalling windows 8. That gpt or MBR error was solved by selecting UEFI:CD drive. in boot options by pressing F12 after inserting the disk.

Have a toshiba laptop with the UEFI encrypted windows 8 key. The hard drive was broken as it was dropped. No sticker on the bottom as is now microsoft policy. Download of the windows install needs the windows key. Cant get it as it's encrypted. Found generic windows 8.1 keys which worked but it said it was the wrong key for those installs. Generic windows 8 keys don't work for the download. Going around in circles and not sure what to do.
I just bought a copy of Acronis True Image 2013 with Plus Pack. It appears that this is all I need as True Image will install the new motherboard drivers as part of the migration process. But do I stay with MBR or move to GPT?
Presently both Win7 (on a 120GB SSD drive) and Windows 8 (on a different 120GB SSD drive) are both MBR format. I don't want to start over from scratch. That's why I bought the Acronis 2013 with Plus Pack.
Ok so i have 2 months lenovo ideapad z580 laptop..i am unable to access UEFI BIOS menu and boot menu anymore these were the steps i tried with my laptop.
1) I have windows 8.1 tried going to pc settings and selected uefi settings on restart But the problem still persist the laptop is just doing normal windows 8 boot
2) Tried pressing/hitting F1,F2,F12,DEL keys

4) Tried updating BIOS for the laptop but unfortunately there was no bios update for this model
5) Tried resetting Laptop by removing battery and ac adapter and pressing and holding power button for 30 seconds but still no use i can't access BIOS yet
6) I tried removing the internal hard drive Out of the laptop and this time one starnage thing happened " before with internal hard drive i used to get lenovo splash screen when turning ON but after removing hard drive and when i try to access bios i can't see the lenovo splash screen at all" still i can't access BIOS!!!
7) I even have tried holding down Shift key, letter B when starting up the laptop but still didn't work seems like windows 8.1 makes changes to BIOS?
