8.1 Failure To Install - 0xC1900101 - 0x30018
Oct 30, 2013
Windows 8.1 failed to install. It would download, install, restart, install some more, restart, and then when it got to the updating devices or whatever it was exactly, it would error with 0xC1900101 - 0x30018. I found threads that pointed the issue to being wireless card issues. I tried updating the drivers before install, no go. The only thing that worked was disabling the card in the BIOS (I actually just ripped the damn thing out, but it works the same).
So finally got windows 8.1 installed. Went to put my wireless card back in, booted up, almost instant frowny face blue screen. So 8.1 broke my wireless capability all together. Otherwise it looks like I will just have to wait for microsoft to fix their default drivers or whatever they did. FYI, i have a ASUS Dual-band PCE-N35 wireless card.

I just put Windows 8 on my main system and then tried the 8.1 upgrade and got an error saying it ran into problems and gave me this code: 0xC1900101 0x40017. That happened to me on my laptop as well and all it required was for me to install one security update and then it was fine. Well, my computer this time shows all updates are current.

8.1 install error 0xC1900101-0x40019 and 0x80070652 and Windows 8.1 installation failed and reverted back to Windows 8.0
I'm lucky the computer even came back to life. I have an Intel HD Graphics 4000 video card, so the review from ADRStudio replied on February 15, 2014 on page 18
could address this problem but I'm not so sure. I can't find the Win 8.1 drivers at HP for my machine, they only offer Windows 7 or 8.
I've been reading Latest Win 8.1 ISO "Breaks" System Image Functionality
and on my dual boot laptop with Win 7, this may be a fatal error when trying to install Win 8.1 because 8.1 adds another System partition and kills off the one I had been using.
how widespread & long-going it is, I'm gonna stick to Win 8.0 for now.

I have an Acer V3-571 (i5, 6GB ram, 500GB HDD, Win 8 pre-installed from new).
I have been trying all day to install 8.1 to no avail. 5 or 6 times.
It starts the install okay then near the end the install stops and gives an error code 0xC1900101 - 0xC3000D
And asks me to restart and reverts to Win 8. One thing I have noticed is that the 'Windows software licence terms' box does not appear at any point.
I forgot to mention I run 'Start is back' normally, but uninstalled it just in case.

My troubles began just after an amicable game of Starcraft with my siblings (Starcraft 1 running through chaoslauncher in window-mode and LogMeIn Hamachi, on Windows 7 at the time). Apparently I closed out of the application too hastily, since my system seized and displayed a lovely and very informative BSOD (STOP: 0x00000116; nvlddmkm.sys).
This BSOD would return every time I would boot Windows 7, sometime during the loading screen. However, I could access safe mode just fine. I did some research and decided to reinstall the graphics driver through safe mode, but it didn't seem to work. Since this PC is primarily for games and all my important documents/media were synced with my laptop, I decided to wipe the HDD (using DBAN) and take this opportunity to upgrade the OS.
I got an .iso of Windows 8.1 from my university and created a bootable DVD using the Windows USB/DVD boot tool. Now when I attempt to boot it in my PC, the blue Windows 8 icon appears for about a minute and then the system restarts. I've put the boot disk into another computer and it won't even display the Windows 8 logo. It simply skips the disk boot even though I select 'boot from disk.' I've tried all of this with about 5 different DVDs using ImgBurn as well as the Windows USB/DVD boot tool.
Strangely, my Windows 7 boot disk loads just fine on the wiped PC, to the point where I can select the language, etc. and control the cursor.
Is it possible that the Windows 8 boot disk loads a display driver that is incompatible with my GPU? Or is it more likely that the disk burner I'm using is garbage? Could any tools on something like the Ultimate Boot CD provide any useful information?

I have a Sony Vaio 32 bit machine 4gb RAM.
It gets stuck at about 80-84% when updating then it says "Couldn't update to Windows 8.1 - 0xC1900101 - 0x40017"
I haven't ever been able to find decent info on the actual microsoft site. I have no devices plugged in, no partitions, etc. Why is this happening! Any work arounds? Would it be better to just burn the ISO and try it that way? But isn't that supposed to be the beauty of the "store" so I don't have to do that?

I have a Dell XPS 18 portable all-in-one machine that came with Windows 8, then I updated it to Windows 8.1 without any problems. It caught a nasty virus and I had to restore it to factory settings, which leaves me back at Windows 8.
I have tried multiple times to install the Windows 8.1 update through the Microsoft Store but keep getting Error Code 0xC1900101-0x40017. I have tried the following but get the same result;
Ran all of Windows Updates that would come up Verified that all drivers were up to date. My video driver is NOT a Nvidia but an Intel. I've seen posts stating that this driver needs to be updated in order to fix the problem. Ran Selective Start Up
Antivirus running is Avast!

After a BSOD and utter failure to boot (presumably a critical OS file damaged) I ran the recovery tools for a total factory reset.
Connected to the internet and worked for an hour or two, then tried a reboot. Windows update had 104 updates to process. It did them, then "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer"
This should take half an hour. After 90 minutes it has rebooted 5 or 6 times. It keeps reverting to the same "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" message. Looks like it might want to reboot through each of those 104 updates.
I'm going to repeat the factory reset and the FIRST thing I will do is disable updates. I'm going to see how long I can work without any updates.

I am trying to use Windows Backup in Windows 8 on my HP Envy h8-1414 to my external HD and I get a message saying something like, "Your last backup did not complete." The reason given is The Device is Not Ready or something like that. The error code is 0x80070015. Yet from the Desktop/Computer I can read and write to the external disk with no difficulty.
I don't want to go much further with the set up until until I can make a good backup.

today i came home to my alienware x51 in some dell system recovery screen, i asked my kid what happened today she said the lights flickered several times, during a freak storm, So my pc must have tried to auto start several times, this is not good at all, i'm so lucky no damage was done at least so far. But how do i stop this behavior from happening again is there a setting i can turn off, so if we have another light flicker or loss of power that it never does it again. I just hope in the long run that my computer is not damaged who knows how many times it tried to reboot.

I attempted to update from windows 8 to windows 8.1, and it said that I need to finish all my other updates first. So I did that, and I left for a while (an hour or 2) and it was STILL UPDATING. I got intimate and shut the computer down using the power button and turned it back on only to be met by a screen that said "Failure configuring updates, reverting changes." I waited longer then before and it was just stuck there! I guess you can consider it frozen, but I can still change the brightness and the volume and the circle thing is still spinning. I can't access anything, no start menu no nothing, So my laptop is useless.
I've read online that I was supposed to wait longer, and that I should have done all the updates at once. But what has been done cant be undone, and now I need to get past this update screen. How do I undo the updates? I've tried safe mode and restoring it but it just takes me back to where I was before. If you need my model number or whatever, then tell me. I have an HP Laptop with Windows 8.

I just got a new laptop, a Lenovo X230, for which I paid extra to have the OS on it as Windows 8 Pro.
So--now I have it, and Win 8 Pro 64 is installed and activated on it. I am a legal owner of Win 8 Pro.
However, I would like to do a clean install of Win 8 on the computer, to have it free of bloatware, etc. (In fact, I would like to set up a multi-boot with Win 7, and perhaps even triple boot with Xp as well. (I have installation media and my product keys for XP and 7 though, so those are not really a problem.)
The computer came with no discs at all. There is a procedure to make recovery disks. I may do that, but I think those will be to restore the computer to how it came from the factory, and therefore not usable for a clean install.
I don't see my product key for Win 8 anywhere. Not on the computer, not on any kind of card that came with it, etc.
I looked at the tutorial here for clean install of Windows 8, but it requires an install disc and product key. I have neither, although I am a legal owner of Windows 8.
Is there a way I can create (from my installed Windows 8) a win 8 install disk, that can be used for a clean install? Or a link to download one? Is there a way I can get my product key?

I have been running my desktop system under WIndows 8.1 since release, and I started having a problem the other day.
The system seems to have hung up completely, so I powered it down (it is usually up 24 x 7 since I use it as a DVR along with my computer usage).
It seemed to be ok when it powered up, but then a bit later it asked to reboot to finish installing updates.
It has not booted since.
During reboot, it displays the Windows logo and the spinning dots for a few seconds, and then the screen blanks, and my monitor loses signal. I have left it for quite a while and it doesn't come back. After some time, it goes into sleep mode (slowly flashing power indicator), so something is going on at some level. I have powered off and back on, and removed the power cord for a minute to see if anything different happened... it doesn't.
I have tried pressing F8 and Shift-F8 during reboots to try to get to safe mode, but so far no good. Last night, I used my laptop and seem to be able to access shares, but unfortunately it appears that the things I want/need most are not shared.
The bad part is that I haven't been able to locate my recovery disc, but I will continue to look.
I bought the system with Windows 7 right before 8.0 was released, and When 8.0 came out, I got the cheap upgrade and before loading it, installed an SSD for my C: Drive, and kept the existing HDD for my D: Everything has been running well until this incident.

I have just successfully installed Windows 8 (upgrade from windows xp).
Although I recall selecting the option for clean install the set up progressed on an upgrade basis. I must assume that I failed to accurately select the clean install option.
The Windows 8 upgrade to my five year old PC was successful. However, I was disappointed not to have done a clean install and wanted to remove unnecessary files including the Windows.old folder.
I decided to try out Windows 8 reset option in order to reinstall on a clean basis. After some hours it reached 98% and declared it was unable to complete. It offered to restart - not surprisingly message "no operating system on drive".
I wondered if I could load the Windows 8 pro upgrade DVD back in but was not sure that would work as windows Reset had reformatted my drive?
Fortunately, I created a rescue disk with Macrium Reflect immediately after my successful windows 8 upgrade so this got me back to a position just prior to selecting Reset.
Everything seems to be working fine but I am wondering how robust the Reset function is in Windows 8 and why it failed. Do I have some unknown hardware problem. I did wonder about running Chkdsk but I gather this is automatic at startup in windows 8. There are no messages to indicate anything wrong. Is there anything I should check?
My intention was to get familiar with windows 8 and then immediately upgrade to 8.1. Will I get an option to do clean install when doing an upgrade from windows 8 to 8.1? If I do a clean install of 8.1 is it probable I will get same problem as in Reset or is that an entirely different process?
Details:Dell Vostro 1710 (5yrsold) was running windows XP now upgraded to windows 8 pro

Woke up this morning to a frozen Windows 8 screen. Only way out was to power off. On reboot, my nightmare began.
No boot device. Long story short, I went through many attempts at a reset, repair, reinstalls, off the Windows 8 DVD, all to no avail. Indeed, when I booted into Dell diagnostics, it confirmed a failed hard drive.
(Sidebar : was there an automated patch pushed last night.....like there was for Win 7?).
Keeping calm, I know I have all my data backed, up, but I am trying to avoid having to rebuild everything from scratch. I have been vigilant in doing image and file backups for years..... But I always manage to hit a brick wall somewhere along the way.
I have summarized what I have and do not have available to me here : Recovering from disk failure

I have had about 5 crashes in the last month. Below are 2 of them from the whocrashed report. I tried googling this issue, but most of what I found is specific to a driver. My whocrashed report does not mention a specific driver. This is a Dell XPS 13 which I bought only about a month ago. Also, I should mention that in Device Manager, there is a yellow exclamation next to "Generic PnP monitor" and when I click properties, under device status it says:
"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)
{Unable to Load Device Driver}
%hs device driver could not be loaded.
Error Status was 0x%x"
I do not use an external monitor, so I'm guessing it's referring to my laptop screen. Not sure if this is relevant to the crashes or not.

I installed an update this morning (the little action center flag in the bottom corner of the desktop told me to), after which my start screen displays nothing except the background, whenever I search for anything it says "This app can't be searched". Nothing relating to the start screen can open, so I pressed 'Windows + r' to get myself to desktop. I can open IE in desktop but can't view in start. System Restore failed and no matter how many times I try it will not work. When I look through Control Panel at the recently installed updates I can't find the one I installed this morning. next step is to do a system refresh - but there's a catch.
I can swipe in to bring up the charms bar (that's what it's called, right?), and I then click on settings. At the bottom i select "Change PC Settings", but along with every other part of Modern UI, nothing happens. As far as I know, from this menu that I cannot open is the only possible way to do a system refresh/reset, thus I am stuck with an inoperable operating system.
