Upgrade RAM From 4 To 16 GB, Windows 7 Won't Boot; Ubuntu Will

Jan 22, 2013

I have an ASUS N61Jv that came stock with 4 GB DDR3 RAM. Everything else is stock on the system except for a 500 GB Seagate Hybrid drive. I'm trying to upgrade to 16 GB (2x8 GB) and my install of Windows 7 Pro 64-bit fails at the loading windows black screen and reboots. "Attempt Repair" option fails, as well as trying to load the setup disc. I made sure UEFI setup in BIOS is disabled so as to not effect the Windows 7 boot disc.I would start to think it's a hardware issue, but BIOS recognizes 16 GB and I can boot into Ubuntu 12.10 (dual boot setup) and look up with an app that reports 16,xxx MB of RAM so I see Ubuntu can pretty much recognize the new RAM sticks as well.

Can't Boot From Windows 7 Upgrade Disk

Mar 15, 2012

OK So to begin Im upgrading from windows XP Professional.. Before I decided to up grade I ran into this error on my PC: C:windowssystem32configsystem missing or corrupt

I tried the recovery disk and pressing r and typing in the commands in microsofts website and it said: access denied (or something along those lines) Ok so I gave up on that and when I start the computer I can go into BIOS and everything but as soon as it hits the screen where "windows didnt start last time, safe mode, blah, last known good configuration. If select any of them it freezes and if I allow the countdown it usually goes to a white / black screen and says that error up there ^^.

We couldnt get it fixed so I decided that I would upgrade to windows 7 and I purchased it online and downloaded it and it WILL not work with the computer. I go into BIOS and set CD/DVD first and press a key to boot from disk and it just restarts as soon as it loads and keeps redoing it. Occasionally Ill get a " the file is possibly corrupt, the file header checksum does not match the computed checksum.

Windows 7 Will Not Boot After Upgrade From Vista

Jul 24, 2010

Yesterday I upgraded one of my computers from Windows Vista to Windows 7. After the install completed and the computer restarted, it shows the Windows 7 "Starting Windows" screen and then loaded a black screen after that, and after a long time with the harddrive light blinking, the computer restarted itself and then stuck at the same black screen again.

I tried putting the Windows 7 disk back in the computer and running startup repair, but it said it found no problems.

Hardware Upgrade Now Windows 7 Ultimate Won't Boot

Aug 1, 2012

I have upgraded a machine from an Intel motherboard to an ASUS P8H61-M LX. New CPU and RAM. Before installing the new hardware I changed all drivers to standard drivers, did a system image to an external HDD. After installing the new hardware Windows hangs with 4 little colored dots on the screen (start of win banner?). A safe mode boot stops at classpnp.sys. The same thing happens if I try to boot from the WIN CD. I went back to the old hardware setup and tried to do a sysprep, but that failed with fatal error, but no more info. The HDD is set to IDE, using a PS2 mouse and keyboard. I cannot do a clean install as there is some very old software on the machine.

Windows 7 Upgrade - Cannot Boot From CD Error And No Graphics

Nov 2, 2011

I have an Acer Aspire M5100 Desktop that was running Vista 32 bit. I tried to upgrade to Windows 7 and am now stuck. I think it is either a problem with BIOS or with an incompatible graphics driver. After the upgrade process (I did not do a clean install), when the computer rebooted for the last time, the screen went black and it it did not advance past a certain point. The error message read, cannot boot from CD.

Since then, when I turn on my computer, the screen goes to black. That's it. If I push delete, I can access BIOS. Even when the boot priority is the CD Rom, nothing happens. I cannot access a GUI to make changes to drivers, etc. With all of the known incompatibilities this computer has with Windows 7, it probably would be best to return to Vista. Ideally, without a clean install because of all the software and files on the computer. But I understand a clean install might be necessary.

How do I use my Vista recovery CD when there is no GUI accessible? Can I do this through the BIOS menu? I am not good with command prompt coding, so if that is mandatory. Unfortunately, I do not know the exact computer specs, again because there is no GUI. The best I can do is this Acer website: Acer Support: Aspire M5100 Specifications.

Unable To Boot From Windows 7 Upgrade Disc

Aug 16, 2010

I am trying to perform a clean/custom install of Windows 7 Professional 32-bit on my VAIO SZ-650N. I have the upgrade disc and though its primary purpose is to upgrade from Vista to Windows 7, it is confirmed to work with clean installs as well. Since I want to perform a clean install, I must boot the installation from the disc and not within the OS. The problem is that when I insert the disc into the drive and start up the computer, it'll pause for a moment longer than usual, as if it detects that the CD is there, like I can hear the disc spinning in the drive, and this little gray underscore will blink on the screen, but it will never give me the "Press any key to boot from CD" message and it'll eventually just load up my OS.The disc is in perfect condition and I can view its contents and run it from within the operating system...I just can't boot from it. Even the directions for clean/custom installs that come with this disc say that it must be done from the disc, not when the OS is loaded. The problem can't possibly be my BIOS startup order, because first of all the disc drive is selected to load first thing and when I insert other bootable CD's such as my beta copy of Windows 7, I can boot from it fine.

Edit: It will not let me do a custom install from within the OS regardless because it is unable to detect any drives/partitions to install Windows 7 onto. And the "advanced" option isn't there...I'm guessing because it's impossible to wipe the drive clean when the OS is already loaded.

Possible To Install Windows 7 Professional Upgrade From Boot?

Apr 15, 2012

My toshiba c650 laptop recently acquired a virus and now it will not boot. I was running windows 7 home premium 64bit at the time with ubuntu 11.10( I think) my computer crashed while I was running a mcafee scan and has not booted since ubuntu also does not boot due to the windows 7 system failure. Any way I was wondering if I bought a windows professional 64bit upgrade, could I Install it from boot? I also need to know if it would wipe all virus's from the hard drive. It would be best to mention that I have tried safe mode, safe mode with networking, my recovery discs and a blue screen repair discs all that happens when running these is a black screen with white cursor I left them all for an hour to see if anything happens but sadly nothing does.

Upgrade XP Partition To Windows 7 In Dual Boot

Jun 22, 2010

I have a dual boot scenario currently on an Intel 80GB SSD, with one partition as XP Pro, and the other is Windows 7, split 20GB(XP)/50GB(7).

The XP partition needs to be upgraded to Windows 7 for my wife's work remote access, and it will also include Office 2010 Pro.

Will I run into any issues dual booting into the existing Windows 7 partition after the upgrade, or should I just reinstall our personal Windows 7 OS after the upgrade is installed?

I have other hard drives to use as well if space becomes an issue, but I'd like to keep the existing Windows 7 install without starting from scratch.

Moving Windows 7 Upgrade To A New Computer?

Oct 24, 2011

With my current PC, it came with a system restore disc which has Windows XP. I bought the Windows 7 Upgrade disc and done the custom installation where it formats my drive and put on 7. It has been working ok, registered properly. What I want to, when I get my new computer, is move this hard drive (which is about 3 months old) to my new setup. I have heard that sometimes you can just attach the hard drive to the new PC and it will work, sometimes you have to do it all over again with the installation. Now, I have no problem with lots of drive formatting as, all my docments are my external hard drive, along with software setup files.

I have a Windows XP disc with a key, as well as the System restore disc for this PC, so I am assuming, I format this hard drive (if moving it to a new Motherboard doesn't work) install Windows XP with the key, then install the Windows 7 Upgrade disc again. I did speak to Microsoft on the phone and when I gave them my key for Windows 7, they said I had the Full version of Home Premium not an upgrade copy, although it quite clearly says on the box that is an upgrade. Also, the new computer I will be buying should hopefully accept 64 bit Windows, can you go from Windows XP 32 bit > Custom install to Windows 7 64 bit?The lady at Microsoft said, so long as I uninstall Windows 7 from my current PC, I can then reinstall and register it on my new one. Just out of curiousity, how does it know that it's been uninstalled from one PC when I put it on the other PC? Does it just stop updating itself on the first PC as it has been installed on the second? Not that it matters, as the Hard drive will be installed in the new one anyway, so this PC won't have Windows anything on it.

Upgrade, Clean Install From Old Computer To New Computer

May 2, 2012

I purchased an HP latop right when Windows 7 was coming out and the HP laptop had Windows Vista when I bought it but I was sent a free upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate by HP during the time when they were selling laptops with Vista and sending free upgrades. So what I want to know since the fan stopped working some time ago, (cooling it with a small fan from Walmart sending air around and inside it somewhat) on the HP laptop I purchased and recieved the free upgrade. If I return the HP laptop to factory settings (did a complete backup when purchased) and put Vista back on it, can I use my Windows 7 Ultimate disk in a newly purchased laptop since it will still only be on one laptop since I am returning the old one to Vista? And do I have to uninstall Windows 7 Ultimate with the Upgrade disk so it knows it's no longer on that computer. In other words are they linked by some type of serial number on my HP laptop that only allows me to install the Windows Upgrade disk on that specific machine?

Computer Upgrade Windows Doesn't Load

Mar 27, 2012

So I recently upgraded my motherboard, RAM, and CPU. After doing some quick adjustments in the BIOS, I attempted to load into Windows to make sure everything was correct. Upon the Windows loading up, the logo freezes for a second, a BSOD appears (which I cannot read as it disappears within a fraction of a second) and the computer restarts.I've already gone through a couple of passes using Memtest without any errors, so I think the RAM can be ruled out. I was hoping I could get advice on how to prevent the computer from restarting so I can see the BSOD and further provide information depending on the error.

Dell Precision 670 Running Windows 7 Won't Boot After Memory Upgrade?

Jan 22, 2010

My Dell Precision 670 will not boot Windows 7 after upgrading the memory to 8GB.Configuration follows:*BIOS A06*2 x 4GB SIMMS in slots 1 and 2. These are correct WS670/4GB PC3200 EEC registered modules as recommended.*memory fan is installed*3 SCSI drives with Adaptec 7901 RAID controller.I've got a dual boot setup, and the system boots and runs fine from the alternate OS (Win XP x64) just fine. The BIOS lists the memory as installed and shows no errors or problems. A memory test indicates that the memory is okay. When I try to do a boot repair from Win7, the Win7 OS is not listed and installing the correct RAID and SCSI drivers from the repair window does not make it visible. The partition is not, in fact, visible from the repair tool. When I put the old memory back in (4 x 512mb SIMMS in slots 1,2,3,4) the system boots and runs fine with Windows 7. What's up with this?

This should install Win 7 on new drive and preserve Win XP on the old drive. To register Win 7, I have the serial info from the Win XP system and will insert when asked. I'm concerned about whether this method to register will work correctly as I was told that Win 7 must find a windows.old file on the installation drive. Will it work OK?

[UPGRADE] Cannot Boot Windows 7 After Upgrading HDD, Windows XP Only Boots

May 29, 2011

I was running an upgrade version of Win 7 Home Premiun 64-bit and decided it was time to upgrade to a larger capacity hard drive.I got a new western digital HD and for the 1st time decided to use the Acronis True Image HD Clone feature for the installation.Cloning took about 25 minutes and was completed successully. Upon reboot, I got a message that windows wasn't genuine and I could either select to do it then or remind me later. I recall selecting remind later. My thinking at the time was to make sure my clone of the older drive was indeed successful so I selected remind later. So at this point, I still have my older hd with Win 7 installed and also the new hd with win 7 installed and also my previous win xp pro hd installed to access older files as a slave drive. I'd never utilized a dual boot setup.Once I verified that my newly cloned hd was successful, I shutdown to remove the older win 7 hd which I did and rebooted. This time my older Win XP loads (it is not selected as boot dive in BIOS) however it still loads.

I then remove that drive (the win XP drive) rebooted to BIOS and selected my new HD drive with win 7 as boot drive. Win XP still loads! At this point, the only drive connected is my ne hd with Win 7 but XP is loading. At this point no matter how I arranged my hd drives, win XP loads. I even removed all the drives and booted to see what would happen. Win XP loads with no hd's installed in my PC?? It's almost as if Win XP is within memory in my motherboard or something if that makes any since.

At this point:Only XP loads no matter hd arrangement I am unable to get into BIOS anymore I've tried my del key, F1 and F2 keys when post screen appears. XP is adamate about loading no matter what If I connect either my older win 7 hd or the new hd with win 7, my data is still there but only accessable as a secondary drive (without the hd with XP connected)Can't boot from cd/dvd drive, Unable to access BIOS anymore to select boot from cd/dvd Drive letters are screwed up, current drive in DOS from XP reads (E:Documents and SettingUser Name>) Any drives that I have connected all show in disc management but again no matter the arrangement, win XP still loads?

This screen stays for quite a while and I am not sure if it stops because of a key I have pressed or just because it has run its course but after it disappears the computer goes back to the logo-screen for a moment and proceeds to boot up as normal except slightly slower than usual. It is a relatively new computer and it has no problems running at all once the boot up is complete it is fast and as friendly as ever.

Dual Boot: Win XP - Win 7 Upgrade Question

Oct 14, 2009

I have a netbook running on N280 Atom with 2 GB of Ram and 2 partitioned drives at 72 GB each.

I have XP home edition installed on the C: drive and want to install Win 7 on the D: drive in order to dual boot.

The problem is that I have a Win 7 professional "upgrade" disk.

My question is: If I already have XP installed on the C: drive, will I have a problem (or is there any cons) with attempting to install Win 7 to the blank D: drive being that it's just an "upgrade" disk as opposed to a full OS disk?

Should I even try to do this?

The reason I'm even thinking of attempting this is because I get a super discount on the upgrade being that I am an adult atending a university. You cannot beat the student discount of $29.99 for Win 7 professional.

I don't want to shell out $200 for the full disk unless I absolutely have to...

Can You Install 7 Upgrade From A Dvd Boot Disk?

Nov 8, 2009

I am trying to install windows 7 upgrade from a bootable dvd. I get the prompt to install and then it thinks for a while and comes back with the message:"A required CD/DVD device driver is missing. If you have a driver floppy disk, CD, DVD or USB flash drive, please insert it now.

Note: If the Windows installation media is in the CD/DVD drive, you can safely remove it for this step."

I looked around the web and noticed this was a common issue with Vista, but I cannot seem to get it past this point. I have tried pointing it to any and all possible drivers I can think of for the IDE, SATA, motherboard, etc.

Then I decided to just try it from within windows xp, and it worked. I was able to install everything fine. So my question is if it can be installed from the disk like it appears everyone is saying, or if certain hardware requires it to be done from within windows.

I tried copying the driver folder from the system32 folder after 7 had been installed hoping the needed drivers would be in there, but when I browsed to it, it said no device drivers found.

Any suggestions around this? Is it even necessary? I am wanting a system that would be equivalent to formatting the hdd and then installing. Do I get that by installing within XP and then deleting the windows.old folder?

This is a relatively older Dell XPS 400, although everything worked fine once 7 was installed from within xp.
