I'm upgrading my desk top soon: main use email, little browsing, and lots of photos. Need to run Lightroom 3.6 and Phtotshop., however I am an amateur photography, not a powr user. I don't use games. Question is Win 7 or Win 8 . This could either be an upgraded system or new system. I suspect a new system, as some hardware not compatible with current.

I bought the Windows 7 Upgrade disc and done the custom installation where it formats my drive and put on 7. It has been working ok, registered properly.What I want to, when I get my new computer, is move this hard drive (which is about 3 months old) to my new setup. I have heard that sometimes you can just attach the hard drive to the new PC and it will work, sometimes you have to do it all over again with the installation. Now, I have no problem with lots of drive formatting as, all my docments are my external hard drive, along with software setup files.
I have a Windows XP disc with a key, as well as the System restore disc for this PC, so I am assuming, I format this hard drive (if moving it to a new Motherboard doesn't work) install Windows XP with the key, then install the Windows 7 Upgrade disc again. I did speak to Microsoft on the phone and when I gave them my key for Windows 7, they said I had the Full version of Home Premium not an upgrade copy, although it quite clearly says on the box that is an upgrade.Also, the new computer I will be buying should hopefully accept 64 bit Windows, can you go from Windows XP 32 bit > Custom install to Windows 7 64 bit?The lady at Microsoft said, so long as I uninstall Windows 7 from my current PC, I can then reinstall and register it on my new one. Just out of curiousity, how does it know that it's been uninstalled from one PC when I put it on the other PC? Does it just stop updating itself on the first PC as it has been installed on the second? Not that it matters, as the Hard drive will be installed in the new one anyway, so this PC won't have Windows anything on it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI purchased an HP latop right when Windows 7 was coming out and the HP laptop had Windows Vista when I bought it but I was sent a free upgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate by HP during the time when they were selling laptops with Vista and sending free upgrades.So what I want to know since the fan stopped working some time ago, (cooling it with a small fan from Walmart sending air around and inside it somewhat) on the HP laptop I purchased and recieved the free upgrade. If I return the HP laptop to factory settings (did a complete backup when purchased) and put Vista back on it, can I use my Windows 7 Ultimate disk in a newly purchased laptop since it will still only be on one laptop since I am returning the old one to Vista?And do I have to uninstall Windows 7 Ultimate with the Upgrade disk so it knows it's no longer on that computer. In other words are they linked by some type of serial number on my HP laptop that only allows me to install the Windows Upgrade disk on that specific machine?
View 1 Replies View RelatedSo I recently upgraded my motherboard, RAM, and CPU. After doing some quick adjustments in the BIOS, I attempted to load into Windows to make sure everything was correct. Upon the Windows loading up, the logo freezes for a second, a BSOD appears (which I cannot read as it disappears within a fraction of a second) and the computer restarts.I've already gone through a couple of passes using Memtest without any errors, so I think the RAM can be ruled out. I was hoping I could get advice on how to prevent the computer from restarting so I can see the BSOD and further provide information depending on the error.

I was supposed to press one of the F keys (can't recall right now but have tried them all) and none of those work. Everything I have tried has failed. I really REALLY need to get this thing reformatted. I tried using the upgrade disk and now when I reboot it tries to upgrade Windows...which is turning into an all night process.

Clean install vs. upgrade...The computers have been slowing down over the past 2 years so I'd like a fresh OS installation. Will the upgrade option be starting fresh enough or is a format the better option? I know it will be more work but that's OK. And how about HP stuff? Most of it I don't use but there's stuff I'll need, right (drivers, etc). I don't even mind their Update software.
View 5 Replies View RelatedToday I got 2 new 4GB sticks of Corsair Vengeance Blue RAM to go with the 8GB I already have in my system (same RAM as well). After all 4 sticks were installed, my computer failed to power on properly. It would power on for about 5-6 seconds then shut off, and continuously try to start up again, only to shut back down. I did have a few minor overclocks in place so I went into BIOS and reset everything back to default, but the computer still refuses to power on with all 4 sticks in place. I've tried different combinations of the 4 sticks and they all work fine as long as all 4 aren't hooked up at the same time. My PSU is 650W if that helps. I really doubt 2 additional sticks of RAM is making much difference in power usage.
Note: As to why I need/want 16GB of RAM, I play around with Photoshop + do some video editing in After Effects and Premiere, and I found myself maxing out the 8GB I had rather easily.
I bought a HP desktop a few months ago. I thought it was outside the 'free upgrade' period,so I bought the Home Premium upgrade when it was offered for half price. I installed the purchased upgrade when it was released, but I've just found out I qualify for the free upgrade from HP.
So -- a friend is looking for Windows 7. Here are 2 scenarios I'm considering:
1) Can I install the HP upgrade on his computer? Or is there something that restricts the use of the HP upgrade only for use on HP systems?
or
2) Can I use the HP upgrade product key on my system and use the key from my purchased Windows 7 Upgrade on my friend's computer? If I change keys, does it automatically make the old key available again for installation on a new system?
I'm using Windows 32 bit, after I upgrade to 4GB RAM, and change my OS to 64 bit.
1) I see my computer really slower. I'm using one background program is Norton internet security 2012. does it make my 64 bit computer slow?
2) Before I upgrade from 2GB to 4GB, I just use about 1-1,5 GB RAM (and when no software use, just 800 MB). But, when I use 64 bit version with 4GB ram, windows start with 1,4 GB ram, and when i use software (like before), it turn to 2,5-2,7 GB?

The computer will not start to do an "upgrade" repair. However I can remove the HD and attach it to a running computer. View 6 Replies View RelatedI ordered a dell laptop for my mom (xps15z). when i got it in i was on the fence about keeping it. then i decided to keep it, i used anytime upgrade on it to upgrade to windows 7 professional. After testing the laptop some more, im disgusted by the quality of it, not necessarily its performance (well besides the screen is just crap). The whole thing (even though some of it is aluminum or some kind of metal) is just plain cheap feeling. Everytime i go to open the laptop, my thumb gets caught on the some lame cheap chrome trim. (i dont see that trim lasting long). the lid/display is flimsy. it feels like a cheap toy. period. Im going to return it to dell and get her one of the samsungs that i tested out at some best buy nearby, its pretty solid feeling. its like a macbook or something.
anywho, what should i do in this scenario (about transferring the anytime upgrade). i believe the samsung will just have home edition installed, so i can use (or would like to use) this same key for it...

Startup repair "cannot repair this computer automatically".I ran all of the troubleshooters and it seems hardly any of the services are running and the computer can't start the service. View 1 Replies View RelatedI found out within the past few days that my HP Pavilion computer needs a motherboard. I'm certainly not going to buy the HP replacement. I have a Windows 7 upgrade package which I have NOT yet installed.
My question is: If I change the mboard and use my existing harddrive which is OK will the upgrade package recognize that I've changed the mboard and not install or is the pertinent information all on the drive. I'm thinking if there is a problem it will be in the BIOS.
I recently upgraded my computer with a new motherboard, processor, RAM, and video card. Before I did this, I installed a second fully functional 1 TB internal hard drive just to hold the system image and my important documents. I made a system image using the native software that was available on Windows 7.To be clear, I made a 143 GB system image from my first 1 TB internal hard drive and put it on the second 1 TB internal hard drive. I also moved my important documents over to the second hard drive. (The second drive was completely formatted and turned into a Basic drive beforehand.)After installing the new components, I wiped my first hard drive, deleting all partitions on it, but I forgot that I had one more set of folders that I forgot to move over to the second hard drive. However, since I had the system image on the second hard drive, I figured that I could use that to re-image the first hard drive, pull the files, and wipe it again.Now, since the old motherboard and CPU drivers were saved on the system image, I figured Windows wouldn't be able to load, but as long as the first hard drive contained my files, I thought it wouldn't matter since I could just install the hard drive on the family computer, pull the files, put it back into my computer, and start the installation process all over again.However, when I tried to re-image my first hard drive with the image I had on the second hard drive, I got an error saying that the recovery tools were not compatible, or something to that extent.
At this point, I figured that since the system image was SP1, if I installed Win 7 on my first hard drive and upgrade to SP1, then it would be compatible, so that's exactly what I did.After upgrading to SP1, I tried to re-image the first hard drive, but this time, I used the Win 7 disk in order to do so. I booted from the Win 7 CD, got to the system image restore, and got an image similar to this:Where it says "Intel Raid 0 Volume," I had my C: drive. I assumed that the C: drive was my first hard drive, so I didn't check anything.In the next window, I was told that my first hard drive would be formatted and re-partitioned, so I said yes. When the system was preparing for the re-imaging, I got an error saying that re-imaging failed, and the system would restart.Of course, since my first hard drive was formatted, Windows didn't load, so I tried the re-image again. I didn't get the error, and it showed that the system was "Restoring disk (C: )."However, it was taking WAY too long. 12 hours into the restore, it didn't even go halfway. I left it running while I was at work, and I just came home now and saw that my system was completely frozen. The mouse pointer didn't move, and I left it like that for a few minutes. After half an hour, I held the power button down to turn it off, and tried the re-imaging again.It was going as slowly as it did the second time around, so I canceled the restore, turned it off, registered to these forums off my family computer, and here I am right now.I'm thinking that I should replace all the old parts and try the restore again, but other than that, I'm stuck as to what I should do.

I just upgraded my bios yesterday, and now my computer reads all of my ram! Now things are acting kinda weird. When I first turn on the computer, is starts fine. Comes to the desktop screen fine. But then it kinda freezes for about two minutes. Can't do anything except open the task manager and play with the mouse. It won't even connect to the internet. Then when everything starts working again, it takes like 2 minutes literally for any web page to appear. I have checked with internet company twice, and both times they say there is no problem with the internet connection.

Bought a computer got home 2 days later ordered upgrade disk 1 week later system crashed took it back to the store they had it 2 weeks said they couldnt repair it told me to pick a new computer i told them i ordered the win7 upgrade disk about amonth ago and i should be getting it soon and asked should i bring it in or mail it back they said sell it or use it its yours since you bought the computer even though you brought it back. Also they said it was a regular upgrade disk and would work on any computer. Is this legal or ilegal since its a diff computer?

I know nothing about routers so surfing simply confused me to no end. I need some suggestions to help get me on track. Not as concerned with price as I am with quality and performance. Currently have 2 computers, network printer and the wifes tv hard wired to the the 4 out ports. Running Verizon High Speed Internet Enhanced which avgs 1.3 Mbps /.35 Mbps. Really need a couple more ports. With 8 Grandkids and all their new gadgets, quality and fast wireless is a must. At times, there are 6 to 8 units tied to the internet all at one time. Currently having an issue with the wifes Netflix movies bringing the internet on the computers to a crawl but that just may be the Verizon internet which is the fastest (not fast enought for me) available in my area.

Then I have upgraded it to windows 8, 64bit by using the retail upgrade DVD and clean install. However, I found out that my motherboard is so old (5 years old) that there are no drivers for win8 and after asking ASUS they said that the motherboard is not supported any more and that there will be no new drivers for it. I tried using win7 drivers but it did not work and without correct drivers a lot of things does not work (in particularly hdmi port).What I want to do now is to revert to my image (windows xp), buy a Windows 7, 64bit upgrade retail DVD and upgrade windows xp to windows 7 for which there are drivers for my motherboard.
1) Can I use windows xp retail (whose product key has already been used to upgrade to win8) image to upgrade to windows 7 retail? will the activation of windows 7 succeed? I want to use clean install again since i upgrade from 32bit to 64bit
2) If the answer to question 1 is a yes, how does microsoft prevent users from using the same windows image file to upgrade different pc's? I mean, theoretically, I can make an image of pc1, copy it to a hard drive of pc2 (even if it will result in erroneous installation due to different specs) and upgrade both systems by using two VUP product keys which are cheaper than one VUP + one retail product keys
3) Can I use windows 8 upgrade DVD which is not used any more to upgrade another PC?

Downloaded it, put it on a disk also.
It will go through the start of the setup and copy files etc, and then it will give an error and say to install from a current version of windows I need to use the upgrade anytim through windows.
But when I go to upgrade anytime it asks for an upgrade key, but all I have with the purchase was a product key and it says that I can't use the product key.
any help?

I installed Win 7 RC on a new build and purchased Vista Home Premium 64bit OEM with upgrade to Win 7 Home premium. The Win 7 upgrade disc has arrived. I understand that Vista must be installed and activated for the upgrade to work. Attempts to install Vista with Win 7 RC running or booting from the Vista disc lead to error code 0x80070103, insufficient free space. My HDD has > 450 Gb free space in 2 partitions. Do I need to reformat the HDD in order to install Vista over Win 7?

It's a new HP DV6 that had Vista pre-installed on it.
I've taken a look at it, and there's a "Windows.old" folder on the root of C:, which is of course a back up of all his data.
There's also a batch file inside the folder with the following inside of it:
"REM Dummy file for NTVDM"
I'm wondering if there's a way to "continue" the upgrade / merging process? He has asked me to re-install all of his software the way he had it. So i'm hoping there's an easier way to continue where he left off.
I know Windows 7 creates a "Windows.old" folder when upgrading from XP. Not sure why one was created for a Vista to Windows 7 upgrade though.
