Boot Manger Is Missing / Unable To View Hard Drives
Sep 13, 2012I have a brand new Sony SVT13112FXS - hard drive is a hybrid of 500 GB HDD and 32 GB SDD.I was attempting to reformat it to get all of the anti-virus stuff off, except when I tried to reformat no disks were shown in the reformat tool. It asked for drivers, so I assumed I'd need to install the SATA/chipset drivers. I downloaded them from the Sony website but it wouldn't allow me to install them (from a flash drive). Specifically the error is "No drives were found. Click load driver to provide a mass storage driver for installation."In my troubleshooting I (stupidly) marked the wrong partition as active and got the dreaded "bootmgr is missing" upon restart. I attempted to repair using the windows 7 disk as a recovery tool and selected "startup repair" 3 times, but it still does not work.I am able to get into command prompt and I am assuming I can inactivate the (wrong) active partition there. However, when I go into DISKPART and type "list disk", all that shows up is my flash drive that I am attempting to install windows from - the computers hard drive does NOT show up here.I will also happily completely reformat instead of repairing, but I cannot do that since I can't get the disks to show up in the reformat tool.

Mar 19, 2009I am not sure if this is a Windows 7 "issue" but I assume it is because I never noticed it in XP.
I have 4 drives in my PC. 1 for the OS, 1 backup, 1 data and 1 backup for the data drive.
What I have noticed the recently is that while the PC is running I can hear a drive power down and slowly stop spinning. If I trry to access the files on that drive it powers back up and I get to the files just fine.
While it is not a big issue I don't like having my drives start and stop all the time just because of the wear on the motor.
Is this a setting I am not aware of or anything I can do to change this?
BSOD When Install Something On Secondary Drives
Feb 24, 2010I am an IT professional however cannot figure out this issue on my my machine and its driving me nuts
I have Win 7 64 Ultimate on RC build 7100 and everything runs fine, however since next week the OS will expire and my machine will reset every 2 hours therefore i upgraded to the official Win 7 64 Ultimate and the blooming machine gives me a BSOD every time I try and install something on my secondary drives (d: e: f: )
Thought it was an AVG issues or access privileges since my other drives where formatted on other previous OS`s (c: for windows, d: for games, etc.) However it now even seems to be doing it if I try and install stuff on C: - now I have a hunch it might be AVG FREE causing the issues, dunno, any suggestions would be appreciated.

Nov 25, 2011I've recently uninstalled itunes. When i restarted my PC i noticed that my internal secondary drive was missing. Reboot and still nothing. Powerdown wait 30 sec and swjtch back on: still missing. I finally opened it up unplugged it and replugged it and it found it again.
I then rebooted again and again it was missing repeated steps above same result.
Dont know what to do ant its a hassle to open it up every time. Windows 7 ultimate. Sata Seagate barracuda 2tb
Installing Upgrade To Secondary Hard Drive
Nov 5, 2009I have a bit of a strange question about installing the Windows 7 upgrade. I'll try to keep it as simple as I can. Firstly
1: I currently have Windows XP SP3 Home Edition installed (and activated) on my 160GB WD Caviar Blue hard drive, which has 8MB cache. It's getting a bit full now.
2. This hard drive is one of the few remnants of a Dell machine I bought a few years ago.
Surprisingly, the restore disk still works and activates, even though I've changed the motherboard and a number of other things over the years. My last reinstall was about a year ago, and I had no problems reactivating whatsoever - I didn't even need to phone Microsoft.
However I doubt it'll install and activate on a new hard drive - particularly as I've also changed the DVD drive since my last activation (as the old one broke), literally the only things remaining from the old system would be the RAM and the processor.
2: I have purchased a 500GB WD Caviar Blue with 16MB Cache
3: I intend to buy Windows 7 Pro Upgrade from TheUltimateSteal for £30. I'm a student, but will be graduating soon, so it seems sensible to take advantage of this offer while I can.
4. Clearly I can install Windows 7 in the normal way onto my current drive and use the 500GB drive for backing up my files, which I'll do if that's the only option.
5. However, if I did that I would not be taking full advantage of the extra cache of the new drive. It would be nice if I could use that for my primary installation to speed things up a bit.
So here's my question:
If I start the upgrade process having booted from the 160GB drive, but during installation select my 500GB drive as the target for the installation, will Windows 7 install and activate correctly? Will it recognise the pre-existing installation, even though it was on a different drive?
If not, then:
If I install my Dell restore disk on the new drive, and don't activate Windows (which presumably I won't be able to), and then run the Windows 7 upgrade on THAT drive, will Windows 7 install and activate correctly?
Basically, is there a legitimate way of installing a Windows 7 Upgrade onto the 500GB drive, on the basis of there currently being a valid XP installation on the 160GB drive?
I have no intention of continuing to use XP after the upgrade, if I am able to install and activate Windows 7 to the new drive, then this will serve only as a backup for my files.
Has anybody tried something similar and succeeded/failed?
I've already read the tutorials on here about doing a clean install of Windows 7. I'd like to avoid dodgy workarounds, as I'd rather not run into problems further down the line when it comes to updates and that sort of thing.

I've been having a few problems with the C drive lately so I bought a replacement and restored from my Acronis TrueImage 2010 backup. That went fine and my computer now works as it did before with my F and G drives connected, but not my E drive. If I try to start up with my E drive connected my computer just gets stuck on the "Starting Windows" screen. If I look at my BIOS settings with it connected it is not listed. Oct 8, 2011make a dualboot comp by adding windows XP to a new partition. I created the new partition with 20gb. (From the 500 of my actual harddrive)But before I actually installed on that, I got distracted with a second harddrive that my dad got(for no reason). It had a full copy of Windows XP backed up on it from another computer, so I figured I would just use that for the dualboot. I plugged it in (wired the same way as my old harddrive, but different data slot), restarted, checked the harddrive in explorer - all the data was there / reading correctly / etc, and I used 'easyBCD' to add the new harddrive to the boot list.(Which, of course, crashes if I try to start it. I just wanted to see what it would do). For a reason I can't remember, I unplugged the second harddrive for a bit, started the computer on accident (I don't know if anything loaded before I shut it off), and then when I plugged it back in.Windows 7 would not launch. It goes to a DOS-like window, except it's just a flashing _ and it never does anything even after a few minutes. XP didn't work still.. so I decided to reinstall XP (as I couldn't tell which harddrive was which on the list, I unplugged the main harddrive while installing onto the new).. and when I did this.. it formatted and installed fully... then restarted.. then restarted.. and restarted.. and just kept restarting, never showing any thing past the manufacturer logo/BIOS load-button-message-thing. So, I then try to use my 3-disk Windows7Recovery disk(burned myself with a program apparently included by the manufacturer.) It installed fully, appearing to work.. but when I launched it, it said "Invalid Partition Table" and wouldn't boot past that. When I insert my driver installer disk, it gives me a basic DOS window thing. dir A: shows the files in the disk. dir B: for some reason shows the same. C: says "Error reading from drive C: DOS area: general failure". All other letter:'s just say "invalid drive". (I'm doing this with both harddrives in.) I attempted connecting the harddrives to an old computer, but it gave an error for both. (It detected the harddrives, but said it had an error reading from it. Windows Explorer asked me to format it... {i'm willing to format one of the drives if anybody thinks it will help, but the old harddrive has data I'd prefer not to lose.} ) Looking on google, I saw several problems that all have similar problems (less overdescripptive than I am though) but none of the fixes suggested worked for me. Also - as I have two different with different errors, I only need to make one of them work.)Also - my other available computer has a CD burner / floppy drive if either are required. I also have several USB's. The computer can boot from USB's and CD's (tested), and I could easily take the floppy thingy and connect it to the computer.also - this computer is probably still under warranty unless unscrewing the hard drive voids it. .. does that count as modification of the computer?

Jan 1, 2010I have two desktop PCs running Windows 7 Ultimate, a HP laptop running Windows XP SP3 and a Network Storage Device (Dlink DNS 343 with 3 Raid Volumes) networked via a D Link DIR-635 wireless Router. Both PCs and the DNS-343 are hard-wired to the router: the Laptop connects wirelessly.
Since installing Windows 7 on the PCs, I am unable to map the network drives on the DNS-343 even though all network components are visible and functioing in Windows Network Map, Pure Networks Map and Norton Internet Securities 2010 Network Map(with Full Trust).
This was not previously a problem with one PC running XP SP3 and the other Vista SP1. The DNS-343 does NOT appear as a network device in Windows 7 Windows Explorer: nor does the Laptop, on either PC. The laptop running XP is able to Map network drives as before and access shared folders on both PCs.
To date I have reset the factory defaults on the router and DNS-343;disabled all firewalls and minimised security controls (eg: MAC filtering) as far as I am able. I can ping each device successfully. The problem is I cannot "see" the DNS-343 in Windows 7 Windows Explorer to map the drives.
Unable To Use Adv Format Drives?
Aug 4, 2012I bought two new Western Digital AV-GP WD3200AUDX drives. They're advanced format drives designed for audio-video editing folks, but essentially they're just a bit better than any standard SATA drive (per reviews I've read).
My Config:
Windows 7 Home Premium 64
Asus P6T Deluxe V2
2x WD AV-GP drives (320GB each, RAID0)
I would install them into a RAID0 (striping) configuration and then install Win7 Home Premium 64. The problem is that if I enable RAID in the BIOS, windows WILL NOT recognize these drives and thus I can't install to them. I saw that there's a problem with earlier versions of Intel RST and that you can either download new drivers or upgrade to Win7 SP1 which includes the fix.[URL]
Problem: I can't install, so I can't use the new drivers. The driver disk they have available for installation is (a) meant for XP and such, not Win7... and (b) doesn't work anyhow.Another Problem: I installed Win7 to a separate drive in IDE mode and upgraded to SP1, but now Windows has a boot loop and windows startup repair is telling me SP1 is the issue. The theory here was that I would get SP1 up and running with the drivers, then tell Windows to do an upgrade/clean install over to the new RAID drive (which it would hopefully recognize now) and download updates prior to the installation, thus enabling it to work during install.The only thing I can try doing (that I haven't yet) is updating the BIOS, but none of the newer updates mention anything about drives or storage compability, so I don't think it'll have any effect.
User Unable To See Or Map To Networked Drives?
Jun 15, 2011I have a user who is logged into my domain as admin and they are able to see all of my network, but they are not able to map or see a drive share that is on another Windows 7 machine. I have double checked permissions on both the users machine and also on the other two Windows 7 machines and they are set correctly.To make this even more bizarre, I can log into my domain name as them and I am able to both map and see the drives in question. The laptop that the user is logged into can see all of the network but when they try to access the drives in question, windows tells them that it can't find the drives.

Nov 18, 2011I have tried every conceivable way to get Explorer to let me view my empty drives under Computer. They show when there's a disk in them. They show in the reading pane, they just won't show up as empty drives in the Nav pane. I have tried deleting the upper and lower filters in the registry. Un checking the "Hide empty drives" in Folder options, adding a (1) to the registry settting "Hide drives with no Media". That setting seems to change itself back to (0) all the time. I am totally at a loss getting the empty drives to show themselves in the Nav pane.

Both drives are running an identical Windows 7 Enterprise typical install. Can I put the 750gig drive in to LAPTOP#1? Can I create and save an NTBTLOG.txt file from each laptop (I.E. ntbtlog-LP1.txt) and select either one during the boot-up? The reason is LAPTOP#2 is not running very well. It has been dropped and I fear the motherboard may have a crack in it causing random boot problems. Sometimes the laptop doesn't even recognize the hard drive.

Dec 23, 2009After upgrading, I've found that I have 7 IDE hard drives ranging in size from 1 GB (!!!) to 200 GB. I'd like to get rid of them all. Is there a free reliable recylcing service out there. I've already wiped them clean (except for the 1 GB drive which won't spin up. It's from 1994).

How To Check Hard Drives
Jul 31, 2012This morning my pc started acting up for some unknown reason. After numberous attempts to fix it, I decided to restore from a restore point. It said it did restore but things got even worse.I then decided to restore an Maxium Reflect image I had made a couple weeks ago. When I made the image, the pc was working fine. The restoring of the image went normally.I have two strange things occurring.
1. I have two hard drives with 3 partitions on each drive. After about 10 minutes I can NOT see second hard drive in either windows explorer or Disk Managaer.
2. When the pc is first booted and a few minutes pass, I get what sounds like a radio station playing. It only lasts for about 20-30 seconds then goes off. It comes back randoms times. I have checked the processes that are running and nothing stands out that would cause this.I built this PC in 2009 and the combination of these identical hard drives (1 TB Sata) have always acted strange at times. Example the second hard drive would NOT always boot when windows booted. This was usually fixed by just rebooting.I have checked and all fans are working normally and inside the case is relatively clean.Is there any software that can be used to check hard drives???
Switching Hard Drives?
Oct 5, 2010I blow away a computer so I'm taking the Hard Drive out and putting it into another computer. From a AMD 3000 to a AMD 3800 and all it does in re-boot. I put in the XP CD and tried to do a repair but it didn't work or I didn't do it right.

Oct 21, 2009I have a slight issue that I'm not sure how to fix. It's nothing serious but it's something I'd like to take care of.
Basically, I bought a new hard drive, made it the primary drive, and kept the old one in so I could transfer everything over to the new one and keep the old as my backup drive.
I installed Windows 7 but when I boot my machine without the disc in the drive it wont boot. I made my old drive the primary one again and I discovered that when I installed Windows 7 it put the boot information on the old hard drive instead of the new one.
Basically, I'm looking for an easy way to get it to boot from the new hard drive without having to use the old one as the primary. Any ideas?
2 Hard Drives Seen As One C Drive?
Feb 4, 2010I have a laptop that came with Windows 7 home premium and one hard drive. I purchased a second hard drive and installed. Is there anyway to set this up, even if it means wiping everything and reinstalling, so that both hard drives are seen as one C drive? My laptop does not have a RAID option in the BIOS. What about if it was Windows 7 professional?

Heres how to set your hard drives so they are included in the high performance:
1. open control panel
2. type power in the search bar and click "change power-saving settings"
3. to the right of the plan name click "change plan settings"
4. Click "change advanced power settings"
5. Go to the hard disk section and then "turn off hard disk after"
6. Enter 0 (zero) in the box (this will change to never)
Doing this prevents your disks from being "turned off".
WEI Score - Hard Drives
Dec 24, 2009As my hard disk, I have a 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black Edition.. it's 7200RPM, 32MB cache. Yet, WEI only gives it a score of 5.9. Everything else on my PC is a 7.0 or above.. any reason for that?
