Recover A Dynamic Volume In Windows 7?

Nov 19, 2012

i have a single hard drive with 2 partitions. 1st partition with Windows 7 OS and the second strictly for data. yesterday i decided to try software raid using windows disk management. firstly, i added another identical but empty hard drive into the computer. boot it up and went into disk management. i right-clicked on the 2nd partition (data partition) on the original hard drive, and selected add mirror. after a few seconds, the disk management tell me an error "failed redundancy" on both my old 2nd partition and the hard drive i just added. so without thinking much, i decided to delete volume on the new hard drive (bad move!), and guess what, it deleted the new hard drive volume together with the original hard drive's 2nd partition (contains data!). now it is showing as unallocated space and i have not format nor create a new volume over it.(i think the data is still intact)

is there anyway to recover the volume?

*i know there is a fix within windows using dmdiag but that is for non-mirror volume(dynamic disk) only. also tried with easeus partition master but still unable to recover the partition as it is a dynamic disk.

*minitool partition recovery doesnt work either for dynamic disk..any other recommendation?

Hidden Driver In Windows 7 Is Dynamic Volume Manager

Jan 24, 2013

I am on my 6th brand new laptop in 3 months. I believe I have a VPN Remote user on it trying to destroy it again. I checked out my device manager and found a hidden driver called Dynamic Volume Manager (one of many). In details I saw it's "value" is "HTREEROOT\0, it's parent is "ROOT" one of it's many siblings is "ROOT6T04MP000".

Basic Versus Dynamic Volume

Jun 29, 2011

1) What is the major difference between Dynamic and Basic Volume It seems Dynamic volume can let you change the size of the volume up or down when there is an adjacent unused physical space, without impairing the files already stored. However Partitions (Basic Volume) can only be extended, and will always requires reformating.

2) It seems that Dynamic Volume has a lot more overheads, so it may be a little slower and actual file stored will be less, any opinion on that?

I did notice one of the Dyname Volume started to show massic missing storage space, e.g. Used Space of 30GB only has 7GB realy files on it, absolutely no hidden files there because I created the volume. This happens after shrinking and expanding it up and down a couple of time, BUG?!! If so it is a serious one.

Dynamic Volume To Primary Partition

Apr 6, 2011

I'm currently running Win XP Pro. on dynamic disks with the system partition mirrored.I have a 20GB simple volume on one of the dynamic disks which I had intended to install a copy of Windows 7 Enterprise on, intending to dual-boot as I changed over from XP to 7, but it appears that you can't install Windows 7 on a dynamic disk as "setup cannot find a location for temporary files." According to Microsoft my only option is to revert the existing dynamic disk/s to basic - losing everything on it including my XP installation.Microsoft says not to mix volumes and partitions on the same disk, but a third party application called Dynamic Disk Converter claims to be able to change simple volumes back to primary partitions - though it isn't clear from the documentation if this can be done to just one volume out of several on a dynamic disk.My options appear to be:

1. Get another hdd for Windows 7.
2. Break the XP mirror and convert one dynamic disk back to basic for Windows 7 - losing my RAID protection
3. Ignore Microsoft's advice and see if Dynamic Disk Converter actually can convert a simple volume back to a primary partition, risking my whole installation.

Soft Recording Volume With Blue Yeti / Increasing Volume Distorts Audio

Mar 28, 2012

so i have a blue yeti, and i'm an online animator/voice actor. whenever i record audio on my blue yeti (or any other mic) i record about 4-6 inches from the mic, and turn the gain down enough that the audio doesn't peak as i yell or whatever. this is what you're supposed to do if you don't want your audio levels peaking and making your recording sound horrible and corrupted. however, afterwards, it means i have really quite recordings. not a problem right? now that it's recorded right, i can boost the volume of the entire clip afterwards right? wrong. i'm not an audio expert so i must be missing something. but why in gods name would the audio distort and peak after it's recorded successfully? it's all there, it's all clean audio. if i turn the volume on my speakers all the way up it sounds crystal clear! all i want to do is do that inside the computer so that when i upload it to Internet people don't have to turn their speakers so far up. but if i increase the clips volume in the computer, it distorts! it sounds awful! why?! i tried in sony acid and audacity and they both do the same thing! i can take sound effects, and recordings made by other producers and crank them up nice and loud, but mine just fall apart!

Volume Buttons Is Not Adjusting Volume On New Keyboard

Mar 1, 2012

I just received a new keyboard today: Thermaltake Challenger Ultimate. I went from a Logitech G15.

First thing I did was connect the keyboard and install the software that came along on the CD, it probably also installed the correct drivers. First after this did I uninstall the software and drivers from the old Logitech G15. But before that, and now after, the volume buttons on my new keyboard is still not adjusting the volume when I press them.

A speaker-icon like this shows up when I press the volume buttons, so its not that the keys are not working: (ignore the text behind it, its me writing an assignment)

Dynamic Disk In Windows 7?

Oct 10, 2012

I have been using computers for a while but just recently started to learn what is really going on. I am having trouble understanding what a dynamic disk is. I have read a lot online but I need a very very simple explanation as I am an older person and a lot of the explanations I read online use technical terms which I also do not understand. I think what I have is a basic disk and I don't understand what a dynamic disk is. Can you have a dynamic disk if you have just a single regular physical disk, and if so what is the advantage.

Invalid Dynamic Disk Detection In Windows 7?

Oct 20, 2012

I recently took my internal hard drive and bought a casing for it and made it external. But when i connected it to my computer the disk management showed it as invalid dynamic. So i went online, read a bit about basic and dynamic and ways to convert the latter into former. I adopted the method of converting through changing "hex" using "HxD". Now when i changed the '47's to '07' , i got back my three partitions without any data loss one of which was system reserve. I do not know how to get the rest back. cannot loose the data. I have to get the other three back. Total no of partition =6 (including system reserve) No. of partitions recovered = 3 (including system reserve) No

Unable To Install Windows 7 - Dynamic Partitions?

Apr 10, 2011

Damn Windows Update started installing a video card driver. My system is a Dell Vostro 430 and has an ATI HD 4350 (I think), but however, for some stupid reason it can only work with Dell's video driver. So when Windows Update installed the official driver for me, by the time I realised what it was doing it was too late. My screens went black; an incompatible driver screwed everything up.

Worse yet, it was still installing updates, so I was scared to turn my computer off in case it would create major problems. After waiting for four hours I decided it was time to pull the plug. After restarting the computer, it kept rebooting when it started loading Windows 7, and then soon after it didn't even get that far; it told me there was no compatible SATA device found and it refused to boot full stop. Trust this to happen at assignment hand-in week. I've got so much work to do.

I went to the library and downloaded an Ubuntu ISO and burned it to disc. I also got a legit ISO (I'm a student and use MSDN) of Windows 7 x86, since Windows 7 x64 had its problems with the software I use for my course. First of all I backed up all of my uni work using Ubuntu as a live CD, which worked okay. I moved other important data from my Windows (main) partition to my other partitions (Music, Games, TV/Films, etc) since I knew I was going to be formatting my system partition for a reinstallation.

I have two HDs installed. A 500GB one and a 1.5TB one. The drives seem to still be working since I could access them in Ubuntu. However, most of the partitions were formatted as dynamic partitions, not basic. It seemed that the partitions on my 500GB drive were basic, whereas the ones on my 1.5TB were dynamic. This is why it disallowed me to install Windows 7 on the 1.5TB drive. (It dislikes dynamic partitions for whatever reason.) However, I formatted the original basic system partition and started installing Windows 7 x86 on it. It got to 100% and was finalising installation, until it halted, told me the installation had failed, and that I'd need to restart and try again. Every time I have tried, it has failed at that point.

I don't know what the heck to do. I can't remove the partitions that exist because they contain a lot of data that I really want. I also have no means of backing up the data. I have no DVD discs left (and it would take a damn lot to back up hundreds of gigs), and no external HDs. Just for the sake of trying it out, I tried installing 7 x64 and got the same error, so I don't think it's x86-specific.

Reinstalling Windows 7 On A System With Dynamic Disks With No Install DVD?

Jan 15, 2011

I have a custom built HTPC running Windows7 Home Premium 64 bit that I bought from a tin-pot PC building firm last year. It has 4 physical drives in it. The first is configured as a "basic disk" with a single C: drive partition on which windows 7 is installed. The other three are configured as a RAID1 "dynamic disk" that present themselves in Windows as a single logical drive (E:) and that's where all my data lives.Windows Media Centre has now stopped working properly and I've tried everything to fix it, in case I can avoid a reinstall! mcupdate.exe always crashes(with System.IO.FileNotFoundException): I can't update TV signal set-up or guide data ) so now I need to reinstall windows. I'm an IT professional and I've installed many prior versions of windows in the past, but never Windows 7:

1) If I reinstall Windows 7 on my C:/ drive, will the E: drive be left unaffected and the fresh install of windows will still be able to see the E: drive and access all the data on it without any permissions issues?

2) The company that I bought the HTPC from neglected to give me a DVD with the Windows 7 installer (and prod key) on and they went out of business a few months ago, so I'm feeling a bit stuck. I've used a free tool to extract my Windows 7 product key from the registry, and borrowed a Windows 7 DVD from a friend. Will reinstalling from this DVD with the product key I've extracted work, or is the product key tied to the physical DVD (or does it just need to pass a checksum algorithm?) If I use my product key to reinstall, will I also be able to re"activate" Windows 7 or will it now think it's a dodgy copy? My current install says it's an OEM version (when I tried to get support from MS.com), but my friend's DVD is a full retail one - is that a problem too? What options do I have here? Can I, for example, create a copy of my friend's DVD and amend the prod-key in the poduct.ini file to be mine in the "HomePremium=" entry?

3) Before I attempt anything, I'm keen to do a full system backup. I've done this with the Windows 7 system image tool and have a 154 GB file that I've copied to an external USB hard drive, and I'm going to create a restore boot "disk" on a CD. However, If I need to do a restore, can the restore app read from a USB HD or not? I assume it can't read from the dynamic disk E: drive? Or can I just keep it on the C: drive, or will this get wiped completely when I reinstall windows, thus losing the image file?

Install Windows 7 On A Software Raid 0 MBR Dynamic Partition?

Jul 30, 2011

I have seen this question being asked a few times already. I just bought 2xSamsung Spinpoint F3 1TB drives and I created a dynamic striped partition with MBR in comuter management. If I try to install win 7, after dvd boot-up, will I be able to select the partition and install windows on it ? I know all about the advantages and disadvantages of using software raid 0. But, my question is simple. Can you just install an O/S on that type of partition (will it be detectable?) or do I have to buy a "fake raid" controller or boot some type of application first to make it detectable everytime I boot up my computer?
