recently, my open notepad window seemed to have disappeared from my screen. couldn't bring it back, so "unpinned" from the application task bar.but now - it refused to open at all - when i try open it from the start menu, or trying to open it with the actual exe file in windows32 folder, and even doing right-click and Run as Admin
View 12 RepliesWell today i was trying to open something with java binary, and i didnt have it anymore for some reason, maybe becaues I got Java 64 bit, but ya, then I clicked notepad, and not I cant fix it? Ive tried reinstalling Java, even got the 32 bit. But I cant find a way to figure this out. Help please its urgent. I think it is a problem with the ".Ink" , but i dont know how to fix it. Only some of the things want to open with notepad, only the ones that are ".exe".

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm having trouble assigning the default program to open certain files on my 64-bit 7 Home Premium machine. I previously had a program called Vesta which I used, and that was fine. The path was something like C:Program Files (x86)VESTAvesta.exe Then when I discovered there was a 64-bit version of Vesta available, I removed my old version and replaced it with the 64-bit version, now sitting in C:Program FilesVESTAvesta.exe
Now I'm trying to reset my .cif files to open with the new Vesta. Not surprisingly, vesta.exe has disappeared from the list of available programs to "Open With", because it no longer exists at the original path. But when I browse to the new vesta.exe in Program Files and select it, nothing happens - it just completely ignores my selection, with no message. I can Browse and select any other .exe program as normal, but there is no way I can assign Vesta as the default program. So, it must have something to do with the fact that the new vesta.exe has the same name as the old one, but a different path.
It seems like I somehow need to reset a hidden "Open With" app path list that Windows is keeping somewhere. Does anyone know how I could get at such a list - is it in the registry maybe? (At the same time it would be nice to remove all the random .exe's I added to the list while I was experimenting...)

I uploaded a screen shot of what I get when I try to click on control panel -> Java(32-bit). I need to figure this out because I need to start school in Jan. and I need to be able to run Java apps. Please help me. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Java over and over. The daughters laptop which runs Windows 7 and when she tries to boot up the computer it gets as far as the desktop and then a blue screen appears. This blue screen appears even if i try and boot the machine up in safe mode? I am unable to tell you what is on the bluescreen because it only appears for a few seconds and then the machine shuts down?

just got a new motherboard and wanted to reinstall windows 7 64bit but the installer just keeps freezing on me , not crashing ,just after windows loads the files and then the windows 7 wallpaper comes but then nothing happens after that i can still move the mouse so is not crashed like i said.i tried installing the other way from inside windows but once it copys all the files then reboot it freezes again, but this time with the words "windows is being installed" or something along those lines

There is a line in the .ini "Directory=C:" I have attempted to change it to "Directory=C:User1UserDownloads" to no avail. I have changed the file logged in as "Administrator" and as the only "User" of the system. Once or twice the change worked, but at next log on, the .ini file had changed back to the original setting. I have searched the registry and no .ini file reference is there. Yes, I have saved the file using both "Save" and "Save as."

I have a problem that makes me want to destroy my laptop. I use sleep mode a LOT. Until today, it used to actually enter sleep mode. Now, it turns of the screen, and HDD activity seems to stop (At least the light turns off). But it never actually sleeps. In fact, it seems to use MORE power somehow. I usually get ~5 hours on battery. My new awesome sleep mode is so good it consumes the battery in just 3 hours.

I have a laptop, Acer aspire 7001, and it runs on Windows 7. It ran fine for a year, but a couple weeks ago I dared to install windows updates. There were a lot of them, including SP1. I restarted, but suddenly windows wouldn't open. I managed to start in safe mode and found SP1 wasn't installed correctly. I removed it, ran a couple scans (antivirus, malware, register) and restarted. Still windows won't start in normal mode. A memory scan found nothing wrong. CHKSDK finds nothing. Startup Repair sometimes says "restart to finish", and sometimes "cannot repair". I have written down every startup repair error report.
I tried to use Windows Recovery, but found all restore points had been removed! Furthermore, I tried to use the windows 7 cd, but the laptop refuses to read the CD. It's not just with the windows cd (which works on other computers). The BIOS recognizes the CD reader, but it seems unable to read cd's. So I'm guessing there's a hardware problem there.

when I close the lid and open it again the screen doesn't turn on and still closed and I have to shut down from the button. also I edited the power options to do nothing when closing the lid.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running into a problem with an uncle's custom desktop where the wireless network is refusing to enable, even after enabling the connection.Here is a brief history;
1) Buy and install a Belkin wireless USB adapter. Wireless networks is enabled, but not picking up any SSID. Insure WLAN auto-config is enabled and no 3rd party wireless managers are installed.
2) My Uncle returns the Belkin and gets a Linksys by Cisco USB wireless adapter. Wireless network connection is disabled. Attempted to run the installation utility for the USB adapter, however it errors out stating the windows wireless manager isn't managing the wireless network. I went into services.msc, disabled WLAN auto-config, and re-enabled with the same issue. I thought something with Belkin may have hi-jacked the wireless management so I ran revo-uninstaller against the Belkin to remove the application and any related registry keys. Unfortunately the issue persists.
3) Even after telling him that it isn't an issue with with the USB adapters, he returned it for a NETGEAR PCI adapter. Again same issue, wireless networks show disabled, enabling the connection says it is successful, but the connection never enabled.
One thing I didn't mention is that the devices are seen in device manager, so its not an issue with the devices not being detected.I'm currently doing a System restore(taking a little while) to make sure there was nothing missed between the Belkin where Wireless network connection was enabled. I'll of course be updating with my results when it is done.I know this has to be something stupid that is causing it(When isn't it something stupid). The only thing that I can conclude at this time is either the 32 bit OS running on 64 bit capable equipment or something is really screwed with the OS; luckily my uncle is willing to format and reinstall if all else fails
I recently upgraded my computer by adding a pair of kingston 64GB SSDs in raid 0 and reinstalled win7. This worked fine and the computer was working without any issues.I then upgraded the ram going from 4 to 8GB and initially windows refused to boot. I discovered I'd reset the bios and lost the raid settings. Having reset the raid I tried to see if the machine would boot into windows and win 7 said it had to do a system repair as the data was corrupted.I tried this and from thern on the real problems started.What happens now is that when booting from the Cd (so I can reinstall win7),the system starts fine, runs the post and then says windows is loading files. Once the starting windows appears in the middle of screen and the animation is just about to start running, the screen changes, the computer crashes and a thick red line appears across the top of the monitor.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a brand new printer Canon IP4850. The driver installed like a dream on an old desktop win XP, on my laptop which is Win 7 32bit. Only on the Acer Desktop Win 7 home edition 64bit it refuses. Windows claim it encountered a "catastrophical error" (????) and error 0x080000FFFF. I tried the driver on the cd which came with the printer, I tried the download from the Canon site: nothing. Microsoft claims it is a Canon problem and Canon states it is a Microsoft problem. I tried to rename the softwaredistribution folder (result: 0). As to me there is something in the setup of Windows (Acer only delivers image dvd's, not original Windows dvd's) which stops drivers from installing. As this desktop is the printerserver of the house, I would like to get it to work!
View 12 Replies View RelatedMy Windows 7 Home Premium x64-based system will not prompt me for a password after the system resumes from standby or from the screen saver. I have both settings in place - I have the screensaver's "On resume, display logon screen" check box selected, AND I have the Power settings option set to "require a password on wakeup". However, neither setting works. I even set the "ScreenSaverIsSecure"="1" registry entry, but it had no effect. After the system resumes from standby or when the screen saver closes, the desktop is available with no password prompt.If I manually log off, or reboot the system, I am prompted to select a user and type the password, so the passwords are correctly in place.

When I launched the startup recovery it gave me a black screen for 5 minutes, then an Acer desktop screen with nothing on it. The loading light will stay lit up for 5 minutes and turn off without the computer doing anything at all and stay at that screen for hours on end.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just tried to upgrade my PC's memory from 8GB to 16GB and have hit a rather worrying problem in that the PC now refuses to boot. Initially, once I'd replaced the old memory modules with the new ones, I got three beeps on power-up, which I quickly established was the result of my not properly seating the modules. Once I'd made sure they were firmly inserted I tried again, and this time all I get is the computer powering up - so all the lights come on and the fans kick into life - but then it powers down again without even attempting to boot: I don't even get to the BIOS. After a few tries I decided that it might be an issue with one or more of the new modules, so I swapped them back to the original 8GB kit and I still get the same problem. My PC is essentially DOA. Whilst I was inserting/re-inserting modules I did try to avoid and issues with static discharge. I wonder if perhaps I've disturbed a connector somewhere, although I couldn't see any signs of this when I re-opened the case to check.
The new modules are a 16GB Corsair Vengence DDR3 dual-channel 4-module kit (4x4GB). They were replacing a 4 module 8GB DDR3 dual-channel kit (4x2GB), so in both cases all four slots were in use. Motherboard is an Intel DP55WG, which is listed by Corsair as being compatable (16GB is the max for this motherboard). I've been running this system for two years prior to my upgrade attempt this evening, and it's been rock solid with no issues.
Maybe I should reset the CMOS for instance? Note that I'm not a hardware guy, and messing around inside the case isn't something I normally even consider trying... But I thought that this would be a very simple, trouble-free upgrade!

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently formatted, and since, my pc refuses to remain in Sleep/Hibernation mode. When I select the option in the start menu, my pc does its thing, once it enters sleep/hibernation, it instantly powers back up. I have changed nothing to my pc's hardware since the format, and this issue never occurred before hand.
Some of the things I have tried are making sure the power management setting were correct. I also hard reset my motherboards cmos to manufacturer settings.
The above seemed to make no difference.

Win7 respects my settings during the session but after a reboot they are back to whatever they were before. Its a real productivity killer for me. I am running inside a standard account. View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a HP Pavilion laptop which came with Windows 7 Home Preinstalled. On the back of the laptop is a coa product key. Recently the hard drive failed. I was told that I could easily get a new drive which I have done and I have run the system test and the new drive passes. However although I have a HP system recovery cd, i do not have any installation cd's for windows as HP don't give you any.
I've tried using the recovery cd but as the new hard drive has never had windows 7 on it, it refuses to work.
What do i do now? Why don't HP give away the software with their computers. It seems fairly logical that maybe one day in the future you might need to install a new hard drive. I'm not exactly enthused about paying for the software when I clearly have a legal key on the back of the laptop.
My friend just dropped off her computer saying that its not turning on.I plugged it in, and powered it up, and a black screen came on saying a few things, including the name of the HDD, the name of the computer, etc, but three of the lines it showed caught my eye, so i felt like i should share them with you:

-Error: 0211 Keyboard Error
it said press any key to continue, so i did, and it booted to the login screen, but after that, it just went to a black screen with a mouse that was incapable of movement.I force rebooted, and now, just like she had described, it refuses to turn on. The HDD light is blinking, and the fans are going, but the screen doesn't show anything.Apart from that, I haven't had much time to look at it, so i apologize for not being able to give you all more to go off of.
