Windows 7 Refuses To Password Protect System
Jul 31, 2011
My Windows 7 Home Premium x64-based system will not prompt me for a password after the system resumes from standby or from the screen saver. I have both settings in place - I have the screensaver's "On resume, display logon screen" check box selected, AND I have the Power settings option set to "require a password on wakeup". However, neither setting works. I even set the "ScreenSaverIsSecure"="1" registry entry, but it had no effect. After the system resumes from standby or when the screen saver closes, the desktop is available with no password prompt. If I manually log off, or reboot the system, I am prompted to select a user and type the password, so the passwords are correctly in place.

1 x Desktop PC, 2 Printers installed via USB - Windows 7 Home Premium installed. We have multiple users, Administrator group and then 2 user groups with no admin We want to restrict printing on the user groups with no admin rights so that when the person prints they have to have an administrator/authorized user type in there username and password.I have managed to restrict printing but as of yet have not worked out how to allow the users to print providing the admin logs in.

Is it possible to password protect a folder (or folders) in Windows 7 somehow? I have several possible uses for this. One of them: At work all my colleagues and myself uses a common computer. On this computer I've installed Dropbox with personal files. Although we all have our own user account on the computer, we all are administrators, meaning everyone can, if they want to, enter my Dropbox folder. I'd love to have a password on this folder so that only I can open the folder.

its possible to password protect a Drive or a particular Folder in Windows 7 Professional Also, how much difference does an Antivirus make in a lappy battery performance I read a few Articles that claim that Security Essentials uses the least amount of Resources compared to others thereby causing less battery usage..so do the antivirus play that great a role when it comes to laptop`s battery life?

I would like to password protect a few folders on Windows 7, how can I do this? Ideally when someone would click on the folder there would be a prompt asking for a password, similar to what happens when you make a .zip and password protect it.
The only software I found till now which comes closest to my needs is Protected Folder, however you have to open the program each time and unlock the folder you want to use, then re lock it when ready, it's not so straightforward as I was imagining. Also I don't know if access will be blocked from other users on the network, once the folder is shared.

I just purchased an Asus rt-n66u Router. Found Here: [URL] I haven't hooked it up yet, as it's a Christmas gift to me from my wife and she don't know it yet...lol...So, I'm not sure if there is any software that comes with it to do such a thing as it's wrapped under the tree...
Basically, I want to hook my 3TB External USB HDD to the Router, so that all our devices can share the media on it, but I want it password protected so if someone else comes in the House, they can't access anything on there and only we are allowed to access it. I'm not sure if the whole drive can be locked or just specific folders on the drive.
Ohh, I'm running Windows 7 Pro x64, my other devices are all random. Including Mac, Windows XP, Windows 8, Windows 7 Student ed...

I tried using WinZip, a friend said that it's possible to password protect a ZIP file but I am unable to do so. I don't like WinRar and 7Zip much for daily use, so I would like to have an alternative to password protect my folders/files.
I have heard and read about many 3rd party softwares, but all of them create a separate folder in which I have transfer the files, similar to a real life locker. But the kind of software I need is the one which has the ability to right click a folder/file and set a password, and whenever someone clicks on it, the password is asked.
I DO NOT want the folder/file to be invisible, I want it to be visible but protected by a password. built-in or a 3rd party software to do so? I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium (32 bit).

I've just tried to upgrade my PC's memory from 8GB to 16GB and have hit a rather worrying problem in that the PC now refuses to boot. Initially, once I'd replaced the old memory modules with the new ones, I got three beeps on power-up, which I quickly established was the result of my not properly seating the modules. Once I'd made sure they were firmly inserted I tried again, and this time all I get is the computer powering up - so all the lights come on and the fans kick into life - but then it powers down again without even attempting to boot: I don't even get to the BIOS. After a few tries I decided that it might be an issue with one or more of the new modules, so I swapped them back to the original 8GB kit and I still get the same problem. My PC is essentially DOA. Whilst I was inserting/re-inserting modules I did try to avoid and issues with static discharge. I wonder if perhaps I've disturbed a connector somewhere, although I couldn't see any signs of this when I re-opened the case to check.
The new modules are a 16GB Corsair Vengence DDR3 dual-channel 4-module kit (4x4GB). They were replacing a 4 module 8GB DDR3 dual-channel kit (4x2GB), so in both cases all four slots were in use. Motherboard is an Intel DP55WG, which is listed by Corsair as being compatable (16GB is the max for this motherboard). I've been running this system for two years prior to my upgrade attempt this evening, and it's been rock solid with no issues.
Maybe I should reset the CMOS for instance? Note that I'm not a hardware guy, and messing around inside the case isn't something I normally even consider trying... But I thought that this would be a very simple, trouble-free upgrade!

I dont know if this is posted in the right area but I'm so desperate to get my laptop working its unreal. First it started off with my laptop crashing, I had totally forgot it needed to do a windows update and turned off my laptop in hopes that it would work properly. After that my laptop has not been working. The machine turns on and gives me two options. Start windows normally or do a repair. Upon starting windows normally, it loads so far before sending me back to the two options of start windows normally or repair. On the second time I clicked repair. My laptop then goes so far before presenting me with a blue screen that is usually the screen where my accounts are. The cursor still moves but it loads no further even after leaving it an hour. I decided to make a repair disk, hoping that the problem was because of windows. the disk loads, gives me a choice on the keyboard language then does nothing. I honestly have no idea what to do, I want to keep all the files safe on my computer as I havent backed them up and I have worked so hard on the projects.

I have a problem that makes me want to destroy my laptop. I use sleep mode a LOT. Until today, it used to actually enter sleep mode. Now, it turns of the screen, and HDD activity seems to stop (At least the light turns off). But it never actually sleeps. In fact, it seems to use MORE power somehow. I usually get ~5 hours on battery. My new awesome sleep mode is so good it consumes the battery in just 3 hours.

I want to set system policy to force password change. It is my understanding that Windows 7 group policy editor is not availible with Windows 7 basic or Home Perimum. This being the case does this mean that there is no way to change policy these to versions or just that the policy editor itself is not available.

When I bought my system, I set it up with a password required in order to be able to sign into windows. can that be bypassed by, say, a computer repair person? I sent my computer in for repair which turned out to needing a mother board replacement.I realized after that diagnosis was made that I'd forgotten to mention nor supply them with the system sign on password.

I have a laptop, Acer aspire 7001, and it runs on Windows 7. It ran fine for a year, but a couple weeks ago I dared to install windows updates. There were a lot of them, including SP1. I restarted, but suddenly windows wouldn't open. I managed to start in safe mode and found SP1 wasn't installed correctly. I removed it, ran a couple scans (antivirus, malware, register) and restarted. Still windows won't start in normal mode. A memory scan found nothing wrong. CHKSDK finds nothing. Startup Repair sometimes says "restart to finish", and sometimes "cannot repair". I have written down every startup repair error report.
I tried to use Windows Recovery, but found all restore points had been removed! Furthermore, I tried to use the windows 7 cd, but the laptop refuses to read the CD. It's not just with the windows cd (which works on other computers). The BIOS recognizes the CD reader, but it seems unable to read cd's. So I'm guessing there's a hardware problem there.

I recently upgraded my computer by adding a pair of kingston 64GB SSDs in raid 0 and reinstalled win7. This worked fine and the computer was working without any issues.I then upgraded the ram going from 4 to 8GB and initially windows refused to boot. I discovered I'd reset the bios and lost the raid settings. Having reset the raid I tried to see if the machine would boot into windows and win 7 said it had to do a system repair as the data was corrupted.I tried this and from thern on the real problems started. What happens now is that when booting from the Cd (so I can reinstall win7),the system starts fine, runs the post and then says windows is loading files. Once the starting windows appears in the middle of screen and the animation is just about to start running, the screen changes, the computer crashes and a thick red line appears across the top of the monitor.
