Mkv Playback Ez Solution X32 X64-NO CODEC PACKS

I have seen alot about no support for mkv in wmp and wmc on these and other Windows 7 threads/boards. I've seen solutions ranging from adding a complicated divx7(not a free codec) tool with necessary support, adding various codec packs, some crazy scripts and regedits with powershell, cmd etc. that can be disastrous with the slightest mistake.

First, if you want to find out the hard way that codec packs can be dangerous, install one. Some are probably better than others, maybe some even won't screw up your system?

But a prominent codec pack-(touted on these boards)- I tried-back when I was a newbie at multi-media playback-caused major system problems. At first it worked great! Then.......Wierd random icons started showing up for un-related programs, web pages, etc., various formats stopped working, program defaults changed by themselves-had to do a clean disk wipe and os install to correct it! Most claim to be minimalist but the point is, they can essentially take-over a system and cause major instability, freezes, etc. Maybe they work for you? Not judging, just suggesting.

HDTV No Video / MKV Codec Problems
I'm having mainly video problems. I'm using the VGA input on my HDTV right now but like to use the HDMI because the VGA input on the TV only will do 1080, and I like to lower the res for certain games. In any case my problem is that upon install and after installing the latest Nvidia drivers when I boot with the video card plugged into the HDMI port I get no video in windows 7.

I got it to work in the Beta, and it was random after booting I waited and left the computer and TV on for about 20 minutes and randomly I heard the ding ding sound that I device had been plugged in and the TV started working after that.(I had not done anything but use the Nvidia drivers) I can see the BIOS boot screen just fine but once past that nothing.

Now, I've used both ports on my 9800GT evga card and used another monitor so that I can use windows and with the hdmi plugged in as second monitor the Nvidia control panel recognizes the HDTV as Zoran display something or another but I cannot use it as a second display or switch over to it, it just stays blank.

On to my second issue with codecs and MKV/other newer HD video formats, in the WMP version that comes with Win 7 the video is laggy and slows down and goes out of sync with the audio after a ffew seconds. I'm running a core2duo e6400 w/4 gigs and dual 9800GT vid cards and I have had it working in the Beta edition just fine.

Only problem is that I have no idea how I got it working in the beta, I had been installing and uninstalling codec packs and had a combination installed and unfortunatly I don't remember what they were or what settings I had tweeked. I have tried CCCP and K-Lite 32bit+64bit and Matroska codec, Windows 7 codecs pack, Vista codec packs etc. If anyone can shed light on this it would be great, I also want to be able to play these HD video files/blueray rips in Media Center but I have a feeling that's going to be easier said than done!

Video Playback Codec Issues
I have recently installed Windows 7 RC1 7100 on a brand new machine I built specifically for use as a Media Center machine.  I read that for Windows 7 all I needed was the Windows 7 Codecs .  I installed the codec pack and can play .MKV (that are H264) and .AVI (that are DVIX) but can not play .MP4, .MOV (Alice In Wonderland Trailer from Apple trailers), or .MPEG (recorded from my Sony digital camera).  I have read that .MP4s should "just play" in Windows 7 but that is not happening for me.  What are people using to play back these other codecs that Shark007 can not play?

Upgrade X32 To X64?
Is there any upgrade of 32-bit 7 to 64-bit 7? I've been able to boot from an x64 vhd so I know my machine can handle it, but I notice the 64-bit installer won't run as an upgrade on my 32-bit system - but is there a way to accomplish an upgrade?

Also, anyone know of a plan for a simple upgrade path? I remember upgrading to Windows 95 back in the day and not even contemplating that it should have been difficult to move from a 16-bit to a 32-bit OS. I'd like to take advantage of the memory offered by a 64-bit OS, but I don't relish the thought of a fresh install.

Btw, I'm up for creative solutions like running my current OS in a virtual machine - if there's a way to get that done.

Dual Boot XP X32 / 7 X64
1. I made a clean install of XP x86 on my IDE 80GB HDD. I have created a new 20GB partition (C) for my XP, and with the remaining space I created another one for 7 (I didn't formatted it, but it was created on the XP installation process).

2. Once installed, I also installed all the essential drivers for my XP to run (video, chipset) but DID NOT installed the SP3 (just on SP2 with no minor patches).

3. I've booted the computer several times before changing the BIOS again to look for my DVD ROM for a 7 install.

4. Began installing the 7 on D: (that partition I've created on XP installation, and no, I didn't installed it on XP partition C.

5. Installed 7 normally, booted again, but without changing my BIOS - it was still showing that "Press any key to start from the DVD". Windows 7 loaded fine, but without the OS selection screen.

(edit) I've passed by this step and did NOT hit any key so I booted 7 from HDD

6. Activated my 7, restarted, changed the BIOS to boot from the HDD.

7. Now XP booted up, without showing OS Selection screen.

8. Changed the BIOS again, went for the 7 startup repair, it didn't found XP, neither seemed to repair anything, even when I did fixMBR and fixBoot. I've tried it several times with no success.

Attention points:

When I choose to boot from the cd and wait for it to pass by do HDD, I have a Seven boot;

When I choose to boot directly from the HDD, it gives me XP;

I also tried fixing the 7 bootloader with easybcd with no results.

(edit, and this one seems to be important) When I boot from 7, 7 partition is C:. When I boot from XP, XP partition is ALSO C:.

So. Any ideas?

X32 Programs Not Starting In Win 7 X64
Going about my second install of windows 7, last time all programs running under x32 were locking up, This install everything went ok till about two hours later and its doing it again. IE x64 will run but not firefox, winamp, or even trying to play a CD, they just show up in the task manager and never pop up.

Bois & chipset are up to date, I'm running windows 7 ultimate x64 on a ASUS P5N72-T Premium. No custom installs were done on windows, I've had no problems with previous versions of win 7 RC or Beta. Any suggentions on what to look at next. UAC controls are on the lowest settings, tried running programs under admin and no difference. HD was wiped clean on install..

Dual Boot X64 - X32 Same Key Code
Made the leap to Windows7 x64 and need to tap the collective knowledge base.

I'm currently triple booting Windows7 x64, Windows 7 RC1 and XP Pro using the BIOS (all on separate HDs).

As Windows 7 RC is set to cease functioning soon, can I install Windows7 x32 on the same machine as Windows7 x64? My concern is with the licensing and whether I will receive updates for both x32 and x64. I'd heard that you will only receive automatic updates on the most recently installed version. Can anyone confirm this? This wouldn't be the end of the world, but having just finished installing all of my applications in x64, it would be a major inconvenience. If it does effect the auto updates, can those updates be downloaded manually?

I saw this thread, but I'm guessing it's installing the same version (x64 & x64 or x32 & x32)
Dual Boot Win 7 & Win 7

I've grown to appreciate a dual/ multi -boot machine. It allows me to test software trials and decide whether I like them before purchasing and installing them on my main OS (Windows 7 x64). This keeps the registry for Windows 7 x64 cleaner and I don't have to worry about residual registry entries or files after uninstalling. It's a fantastic way to test things out.

Additionally, I've run into a problem where an application works fine in Windows 7 RC x32 but will not install in x64. I know about Windows 7 Pro having an XP mode, but is it worth the hassle and additional cost to upgrade to Pro? Re-booting to XP or RC1 is time consuming but easy. Is it possible to have XP mode running in the background and switch back and forth between them without having to close XP mode?

Xerox Driver Phaser 8400 (x32 - X64) Issue
I have 2 new computers using Windows 7 (laptop x32 and Quadcore x64). Installing web-based drivers for my 2 Xerox Phaser 8400 DP network printers is ok, but prints are not.

First after installation it only prints in basic b/w mode and not 100% the size (about 70%) of the original. It is like the printer uses A5 size standard and resizes everything accordingly. No paper size selection and/or print quality selection is possible. Now it seems I have to manualy set the configuration in the Xerox driver screen to Phaser 8400, and that solves the problem with print quality. I can now print in color also. But not in the right size or other paper types.

Xerox says only to help (level 2) if I have a service contract. I do not need this contract (no issues ever with the printer ever I could not resolve myself)) and do not want to pay for issues Xerox should resolve anyway...

Upgrade From X32 Bit To X64 Bit
I have a Gateway computer running Windows Vista 32 bit which has all requirements now for x64 bit Windows 7. Is there anyone who can give me a direct answer if I can do a direct upgrade from Windows Vista 32 bit to Windows 7 64 bit? They are stating from Microsoft that both the 32 and 64 bit are included in the Windows 7 box.

Even the Windows upgrade advisor states I have everything needed to run Windows 7 64 bit, but it does not state that I can use the Windows 7 64 bit software.

Can I Install Win 7 X32 Bit Then Later To Win 7 X64 Bit With Same Licence Key ?
I currently run Windows XP x32 bit Operating System.  I have ordered the "full retail" version of Windows 7.  I understand that 2 discs will be enclosed in the box, one for installing Windows 7 x32 bit and the other for installing Windows 7 x64 bit.  I understand that I need to choose whether I want the x32 bit or x64 bit Windows 7 Operating System and install the 1 I choose at that point.  I am quite happy with that.

However, what I would like to do is initially install the Windows 7 x32 bit system and in about 6 months (when I have upgraded my hardware sufficiently) then move on to the x64 bit Windows 7 Operating System.  Can I do this with the same 1 licence that comes with the full retail version I have just ordered or will I need to buy another copy of Windows 7 ?  It would not bother me if I had to do a "clean install" to move from x32 bit to x64 bit.

Language Packs For W7 - Import From VISTA
Anybody know if during the RC other language packs will be available.

If not could I "Poodlefake" or Backport the language packs from the VISTA system.

I'd like to try the Icelandic pack so some of our "Normal" i.e non technical users back home can check / try Windows 7.

(Of course they all speak excellent English -- like most Scandanavian countries English is a mandatory language in Schools here and even as adults around 90% here speak it fluently but it would be nice to test Windows 7 in a "Working environment" away from the IT testing areas to see how it performs in day to day work. (Maybe not 100% mission critical stuff but for reasonably robust office situations).

Error Playing MKV On XBOX 360
For some reason, I am no longer able to play MKV files through WMC on my 360.

The error message it's giving me is:

Cannot play Video,

The file type is not recognized and cannot be played. Either the correct codec (a file that compresses/decompresses audio or video) is not installed or the file is corrupt.

It used to play fine when I had installed K-lite codec pack as well as Divx direct show filters.

However, I had bad ram and had to re-install Windows 7 and since then, playing MKV movies on my 360 through WMC does not work!

Any suggestions?

I've un-installed all the codec packs like Divx and k-lite, still not working.

Win 7 RC X32 Widescreen Resolution Problem
The other day i installed Windows 7 RC x32 on my laptop with a 1680 x 1050 HD LCD Screen, off course it's widescreen. Now hen i run any 4:3 resolution, such as 1024 x 768 the image doesen't fit the hole screen, leaving one bar at each side.

This only happens hen i'm running Windows 7, i have another partition with Windows XP, and hen i run a 4:3 its goes full screen without the bars.

Alsow i didn't had my Nvidia drivers installed on that partition, i hazen't on my home so i didn't had internet, and i didn't had the drivers neigther.

I deleted that partition with WIndows 7 alredy, i would change from XP to 7 but i would need to format, and i wanted to keep my data. Alsow installing all my games (about 90 gb) on another partition with Windows 7 would be ridiculus.

I would change from xp to 7 if anyone can tell me a fix to this please.

Networking A Printer With A Vista X32 System
Can someone please help me or point me to a guide on how to enable/share a printer between a Windows 7 RC and a vista system?

I have a HP printer connected to my Windows 7 RC x64 system and it prints from my computer just fine. I pulled up the settings and told it I wanted to share the printer as "Win7HP" to make the name easy. Anyway when I went down to my roomates computer I didn't see the printer and if I try to click my computer name under his network window I get a pop up asking for a user name and a PW. What am I doing wrong? I would hate to have to install another partition of Vista x64 just so he can print using my printer.

When we had things set up before he never had to "log in" from his computer to access my printer.

HP Photosmart Driver Solution
I had my P1100 colour inkjet printer for over 4 years; working perfectly under XP-Pro.

After installing Windows 7 (dual boot), the P1100 printer could not install.

HP's web site stated that no drivers would be available. As there were no Vista drivers either, I thought I had to scrap the printer.

Then I had a go of systematically installing printers from the list (Control panelSystemDevice Manager etc.)

Eventually I came to HP DeskJet 970Cse and its driver - BINGO!

The Testpage printed ok and so does everything else, including Duplex printing.

Moral - think outside the box, don't give up

I hope this may work for other printers, where no Vista or Windows 7 driver is available.

Possible Solution To Aspire One Freezes
I think I found a solution to this problem:

Some info:

I have Windows 7 RC in my Aspire One 150.

And when you watch youtube or listen to music, it randomly lock ups... so I tried to check the problem and it seems to be in the audio codec.

Windows 7 uses a generic one, so I installed the newest one of Realtek HD audio...

and for now, no lock-ups....

I'll keep posting results!

Random Freezes - Solution
This is basically rehashing my post from this thread: Windows 7 freezes

I've been experiencing the same freezes a lot of you guys have been experiencing lately. The machine would simply freeze, mouse wouldn't move, keyboard wouldn't respond, and the only way out is a hard reset.

Then they got worse, and started happening within a minute or two of startup, very consistently.

However, Safe Mode still runs fine, so I figured something that's disabled in Safe Mode is the cause of the freezes.

At least for my machine, this assumption turned out to be correct, and I was able to fix the problem.

Here's my solution:

Step 1: boot into safe mode (if your system didn't just crash, do this by pressing F8 at the windows boot menu).

Step 2: click Start, type msconfig, disable EVERYTHING in both the start up and services tabs. Now reboot into normal mode and see if you still experience freezes. If you do, then this solution will not help you. If, however, the freezes stop, then you've just isolated the cause of the freezes to one of the services of startup items you disabled.

Step 3: run msconfig again (you can do this in normal mode, no need to reboot again), and enable all the startup items first. Now reboot and see if your machine starts freezing again.

Step 3.1: Freezing: if the system does freeze, then the cause is one of those start up processes now enabled. To find out which, disable the second half of the list (if your machine freezes immediately after start up, do this in safe mode), and reboot to normal mode to see if it still freezes. If it does, then the cause is in the list of enabled processes, and if it doesn't, the cause is in the list of disabled processes, so enable/disable a half of the appropriate part of the list, and try again.

Repeat this until you isolate the process that's causing the freezing, and remove the software related to it.

Step 3.2: No Freezing: This means your freezing problem is caused by a system service. Leave the start up processes enabled and continue to step 4.

Step 4: in msconfig go to the services tab, and sort the services alphabetically. Disable the lower half of the list and reboot.

Step 5.1: Freezing after reboot: the freezing is caused by one of the enabled services, so again, sort the list alphabetically and disable half of the enabled services and reboot. Repeat this step, minimizing the list of potential causes until you isolate the faulty service.

Step 5.2: no freezing after reboot: freezing must be caused by one of the disabled processes, so disable the enabled ones, and repeat step 5.1 for the second half of the services list, until you isolate the faulty service.

Step 6: verification: to verify that the faulty service is indeed the cause of your freezes, disable all other services and start up items and reboot your machine with only the faulty service enabled. If it still freezes, congratulations, you've just found the root of your problem.

If it doesn't freeze, then the problem is more complex and probably involves dependencies and concurrent services, and you'd have to use more complex methods to find out what exactly is causing this.

Step 7: fixing the faulty service: This is tricky, as these are all system files.

the first thing you have to do is figure out what files the service runs off of. In my case the service in question was Workstation and it was wksvcc.dll that needed replacing to fix my machine's freezing problem. I stumbled upon the service's .dll file name after many hours searching for a way to fix a corrupt service, so I can't offer any insights into how you might find the correct .dll file for your faulty service.

Now, to fix the service:

After you've tracked down the correct .dll file, locate it in windows explorer, change it's permissions so you can modify the file (do this by opening the properties of the file, and in the security tab's advanced page, first change ownership to yourself, then give yourself permissions to modify the file). Once this is done, you can rename the file to <filename>_CORRUPT.dll. Now, as far as your system is concerned, the file is MIA and the only fix is replacing it with a copy from the repository.

Click Start, type in cmd and right click the icon to run it as Administrator.

In the command prompt window, type sfc /scannow

This will run a system file scan and discover the missing/corrupted file, and then repair it by getting a clean copy from the repository.

Once this is done, go back to Start, type and run services, then find the faulty process and enable it. Restart your machine and see if this fixed your problem.

Hopefully someone can chirp in and include a link to to some comprehensive listing of Windows services and their respective .dll files, as I haven't been able to find such a list so far.

Edit: link to a list of services and their descriptions, thanks to kitesurfa: http://www.blackviper.com/Windows_7/service411.htm#A:

Once you go into a service's page, scroll down to see the .dll files listed in the registry settings (see attached picture for example).

The above solution worked for me, however, since it involves modifying system permissions and files, do this at your own risk.

Solution For Issue Using HP Webcam
I have just bought an upgraded HP Touchsmart Tablet PC and had it upgraded to Windows 7!

Everything worked fine apart from the webcam with the message that it couldn't be connected.

So I clicked 'START'

In the search box I began to type 'RUN PROGRAMS MADE FOR PREVIOUS VERSIONS ON WINDOWS' Clicked on that.

Clicked 'NEXT'

Scrolled Down and selected HP Mediasmart Webcam (Im guessing if you have a different HP laptop it will be fairly similar so select your webcam)

Click 'NEXT', Click 'TRY RECOMMENDED SETTINGS'

It chose Windows XP service pack 2 I tested the program before closing - IT WORKED SUCCESS

Then I clicked 'NEXT' and 'YES KEEP THESE SETTINGS'

Hope this helps others out I know it was doing my head in for a little while there, I read to click the compatibility tab in device properties and this was non existant to I simply searched to start with for COMPATIBILITY and it lead me here!
