View 1 RepliesI have Windows 7 home 64bit and I use the 2012 version of Norton Internet Security.Over the last few days the Action Center keeps telling me that NIS has been switched off and raising issues about antispyware, antivirus and the firewall. NIS is sitting there telling me that everything is secure.
I don't think there is a major issue but it is very irritating. I can resolve it for today by going into NIS, switching everything off and then back on again. So it looks like something has gone wrong with the communication between Windows and NIS at start up.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI purchased a Windows 7 laptop that was already running Microsoft Security Essentials. Since I had a Norton 360 Premier subscription, I tried to download and install it.It won't work without uninstalling MSE, which I did. But it still doesn't work. MSE won't reinstall because it can find bits of the Norton install. I've run the Norton utilities for removal, I've spent 4 hours on the phone with Norton, and I've been going back and forth via email with the MS support guys to do a full removal of MSE and after going through registry edits, and turning off all microsoft products and hours of troubleshooting this - I *still* can't get it to work.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy laptop has suddenly seized up and I think it might be to do with a security conflict - Norton security scan appears to now be on my laptop through, I think, some vigorous pop-ups which must have got past me. I've just installed - reinstalled - AVG 2013 (no idea why I lost it in the first place) so feel reasonably protected and want to try to get rid of Norton Security Scan to see if that unblocks the slowness. But it won't uninstall, claiming always to be running.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a lenovo laptop for home purpose around 1.5 months back. The laptop was having already microsoft security essentials (MSE) and mcafee antivirus plus software. Unfortunately, yesterday i was facing blue screen on death type of error (BSOD) error. On one forum, I found that it may be due to the mcafee antivirus software. So, I uninstalled the software as per suggestion. Why MSE was not able to detect this bsod error? Moreover, why mcafee, which itself is a anti-virus software, was causing this issue?
Morever, I want to install good free antivirus software. I am totally confused whether should I install the antivirus software or, the internet security software. Please throw more light on good free internet security software from longer perspective. (I just found that almost all free trials are only for 1 month only)? Moreover, why built-in windows firewall and microsoft security essentials (MSE) are not enough for detecting malacious software. Why extra internet security software or antivirus software is required ?

I recently found this which uses cmd to edit security settings:
Sample command to reset security settings:-
The steps below do not apply to Windows XP Home Edition, or Windows Vista Home Basic and Home Premium editions. To restore security setting for Home editions, either use the Microsoft Fix, System Restore or a backup.Note After security settings are applied, you cannot undo the changes without restoring from a backup.
If you are uncertain about how to restore your security settings to the default settings, you must make a complete backup that includes the System State (the registry files). Items that are reset include NTFS file system files and folders, the registry, policies, services, permissions , and group membership.
To restore your operating system to the original installation default security settings, follow these steps:
Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
In Windows XP, type the following command, and then press ENTER:secedit /configure /cfg %windir%
epairsecsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose.
In Windows Vista, type the following command, and then press ENTER:secedit /configure /cfg %windir%infdefltbase.inf /db defltbase.sdb /verbose.
You receive a "Task is completed" message and a warning message that something could not be done. You can safely ignore this message. For more information about this message, see the %windir%SecurityLogsScesrv.log file.
Next steps After you run this Microsoft Fix it (or complete these manual steps), standard user accounts may no longer appear on the log on screen when you start your computer or try to switch users. This occurs because standard user accounts are removed from the Users group when you reset Windows security settings. To add the affected users accounts back to the Users group, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, and then All Programs. Or click Programs.
2. Click Accessories, and then click Command Prompt (Windows XP). Or right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run As Administrator (Windows Vista).
3. In the Command Prompt window, type net users and then press ENTER. A list of user accounts is displayed.
4. For each account name listed in the Command Prompt that is missing from the log on or switch user screen, type the following command and then press ENTER:
net local group users account name /add
5. Now go to the "Did this fix the problem?" section.
More information In Windows Vista, the Defltbase.inf file is a Security configuration template for the default security. You can view the settings for this file in the following location: %windir%infdefltbase.inf

View 2 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a new HP PC w/ Windows 7 Home Premium [64-bit] OS.When I ordered this computer from HP, it was supposed to come with a wireless internet card. However, the manufacturer made a mistake and did not install any card. I called and complained, now HP has sent me the following product:Linksys WMP600N Dual-Band Wireless-N PCI Adapter now onto setting up the connection....I did install a NETGEAR wireless card on the back of my old PC, about 6 years ago, so I think I should be able to install this card, however I did read some people have problems with the drivers on this card. Also, at my old apartment where I had wireless internet the first time, the landlord and maintenance people managed everything for providing the signal, so I don't really know anything about setting up router, signal, connection, etc.
Right now the primary internet connection in this house comes through the cable+phone company. There is an RCA Thompson Digital/Broadband modem or router or something, model #DHG535-2, and from there the connection plugs through ethernet cable into the Apple Mac that I'm using to type this right now.My new PC is in another room, and I will install that Linksys wireless card and use that PC most of the time. What I would like help with is:
1. What steps must I take to install the new PC
2. Do I need to get a wireless router, and if so, which ones will work best with the wireless card I received
etc. etc.I think I found my old NETGEAR wireless router, model number MR814v2(??), but I bought this 6 years ago and don't know whether it will work well or at all with the new dual-band card.

I have followed several examples, which are the same on setting this up, but still unable to connect. The examples show trying to connect using the computer name and user name. If you are connecting say from your office computer to your home computer, do you not have to enter the IP address somewhere or does it just connect via the computer name?
I have yet to find anywhere to enter an IP address or connect any way beside just using the computer name. I am setting this up to connect Windows 7 to Windows 7.
