HP Mini Won't Recognize USB Devices - Keeps Freezing / Bad Shutdowns
Nov 7, 2012There are several problems with HP Mini netbook. First among them is that programs keep freezing. It seems to start up normally, but shortly after you launch any program (even explorer or the control panel), it hangs. This means among other things that I can't get into Device Manager to look at things like drivers because I can't get there before the freeze sets in. When it happens I can still get to the toolbar and use the start menu and so on, but if I try to launch any other programs, nothing happens. Also I can't force the shutdown of the "hung" programs.
I figured this sounded like a Class A virus situation, so I tried to download some tools like AVG. The Freeze got me, using both IE and Chrome. I tried loading up my USB Thumbdrive (full of troubleshooting tools). The HP won't admit that it even exists, and the access light on the stick never blinks. An external USB HDD available, so I hooked it up. Again, not even rejected, just ignored. The HP will recognize an external DVD drive, but refuses to let me write anything to a black disc. In fact when I try the drive disappears altogether.

Apr 1, 2012I recently installed windows 7 home premium 64 bit, previous OS was Vista home premium 32 bit. My desktop is an HP pavilion d4650y. I have the OS loaded on my main HD which is a SATA.
HD & DVD drive worked perfectly before on vista. I tested both devices on another pc with XP and they work fine. I've triple checked the connections but still the devices are not recognized by Windows 7. I've also tried renaming the HD & changing the drive letter, but still no luck.
Both drives are connected to a PCI E card, and are set to cable select, on separate cables. In the BIOS both drives show up. In disk management they do not show up at all.
My HD is a western digital 250 gb EIDE, and the DVD drive is a IDE Pioneer DVD burner (secondary disc drive).

Mar 5, 2011I am building a computer fort the first time and I am having trouble getting Windows 7 to recognize my hard drive. My har drive and mother board are as follows: Hard drive-Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive, Mother Board-GIGABYTE GA-870A-UD3 AM3 AMD 870 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard when I go to install windows 7 I eventually get to a screen where it ask for an install location, unfortunately it doesn�t seem to recognize my hard drive. It gives me an option of installing driver so I went to the gigabyte website and downloaded the drivers that it said I required. I believe there was an ACHI driver and a Raid driver. After I stalled both of these drivers the hard drive still was not detected. One strange thing I noticed was that when I browse for a driver my hard drive is listed as a place I can search. I then proceeded to the Bios to try and match the drivers. The hard drive is detected in the Bio. When the HD is set to IDE my BluRay play is able to read the windows install disc. But windows won�t recognize my HD. If I set it to ACHI or Raid I can�t seem to get the windows CD to load. Do I need an IDE driver? Out of frustration I tried installing a windows XP to see if it would be able to recognize my hard drive. It seemed to load on the hard drive fine but entered this weird loop where windows would install itself but wouldn�t actually load as the operating system. In other words when I try to restart my computer and run the OS off of my hard drive it gave me an error message. Something like (windows OS could not be located) When I went to go install windows 7 again my hard drive still was not detected as a place to intall windows but when I search the hard drive (as if I was searching for a driver) I can see the Windows files that were loaded from when I tried to install XP.

My system is a Netbook with USB 2.0 as the only external drive interface so that limits my options considerably if I want to keep it to something I can throw into my suitcase easily when travelling.

Feb 17, 2010I've been all over the net trying to resolve this issue, and found many hotfixes,downloads from Microsoft and manufacturer, but to no avail. My external drive was recognized for the first month. Then, very suddenly, Windows 7 doesn't recognize it. It sees it, but prompts a "Need to Format before first use". It has 300G already used with valuable info.Tried moving the external hard drive to our home PC with Windows XP and the same "Need to Format" message is prompted. If I hook it up on my wife's MAC, I can see the data. Now I have read that this is a known issue with the 64bit version of Windows and external drive. I have already all the KB976972 and KB977074 download fixes from Microsoft. I have also tried to uninstall the drive, unplug it, turn it off, restarting Windows, and plugging back the drive, but I have the formatting prompt again. And if I choose to not format, i have an error message DATA ERROR (CYCLIC REDUNDANCY CHECK).**This does not seem to be an issue regarding only the WD drives but all drives**Called WD tech, and it was useless. Does anyone have a fix? A link to share? An idea? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit on my HP Pavilion a6418f.

When I start/restart my computer and connected the usb cable into laptop, it shows the icon on bottom taskbar (safely remove hardware and when clicked on the usb icon, I see "open Devices & Printers and Eject USB to IDE bridge), but I can't see my drive at all when I click on "my computer"? I can only see it under "right click Computer, Manage, Device Manger, Disk Drives," it only says; "generic USB Disk USB Device". And when I expanded the USB controllers via Device Manager, I can see it under USB Mass Storage Device. Oct 1, 2010My mother asked me to fix her computer, his window XP is badly corrupted, so I tried to install Window 7 on her computer. However, the hard drive didn't show on the screen. I found it quite odd because BIOS detected it as IDE driver, and it's a SATA driver. I tried to install with old Window XP installation CD. Same thing, doesn't show on the window XP installation screen either.
I tried to hook hard drive on other computer, and was testing with Window 7 XD and see if it was working, and it did. It shown on the disk screen. My guess that it's probably the BIOS that occurred, or perhaps other things. I have one hard drive, nothing more.

Computer recognizes the drive, but no CD or DVD is recognized. When anything is inserted, the drive is completely silent. I try to open the drive, then it ejects the CD or DVD automatically.
I have uninstalled and rebooted....it automatically reinstalled upon rebooting, but no changes. I tried the Microsoft website automatic fix, but it didn't work either. Says the driver has the latest version.
Won't Recognize DVD Drive During Installation
Jul 14, 2010I've tried installing a couple times now and I keep on getting an error saying that I'm missing a driver for the DVD drive.
Thing is, I'm installing Win 7 using the DVD drive.
So I've looked for a driver for my drive (Lite-On LH-20A1S) and all I get from the Lite-On site is Firmware. I've also tried the USB/DVD Download Tool to make a bootable USB stick but that program says my .iso isn't valid.
