View 2 RepliesI'm new here, guys, so don't shoot me down in flames if this has been covered. I've checked the search, but didn't come up with anything the same.I've just re-jigged the Good Lady's PC - it had some sort of virus. Wiped it & re-installed Win 7 Pro.Put back most of the stuff that was there & most everything works except anything that's a '.doc' file.Clicking on any one of those produces a 'Handle is Invalid' error & won't start. However, dragging & dropping on LibreOffice starts up the file & it can be edited. Saving it again does not fix the problemOne noticeable difference is that I have gone from MS Office XP to LibreOffice as the old XP was no longer opening some new file being sent to her (choir!).I am wondering if this may be the cause. I have a copy of MS Office 2010 & will try installing that & taking control of the .doc files. I'll see if that fixes it
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have setup the backup utility to use my network drive and create an image and copy the my doc folder. When I run the utility it will go through it's process for a long time before providing the following error information:
Check your backup
One of the backup files could not be created.
Details: The handle is invalid.
Error code: 0x8078002A
I am unfamiliar with what the error means and when I go to the network drive the backup zip files say they are also corrupt. Has anyone come across this, or have an idea as to what the problem may be?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got a brand new Touchsmart 300z running Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. I set up Windows Media Center, and added Mediabrowser for better TV show support.
Mediabrowser sometimes behaves normally, other times it gives me an INVALID APPLICATION unable to launch Mediabrowser error. I usually don't get the error when I first launch Mediabrowser. I usually get it (only sometimes) when entering one of the media collections, trying to play a video (again, only *sometimes*), trying to save settings, etc. The crazy thing is, sometimes it works.
It does seem to consistently give me the error for some video files. For others it might give me the error *sometimes*. Sometimes I can play the file without problem, other times I get the error.
All files play correctly in native Media Center, in the Touchsmart software (which also doesn't support TV series collections very well), and WMP.
Thinking this might be a video-related problem, I also installed Heatwave, GameEx, and mcShoutcast. Heatwave also gives me this error -- SOMETIMES. mcShoutcast and GameEx seem to always give the error. For kicks I also tried TunerFreeMCE - always gives the error.
I have tried various things like manually deleting caches, changing permissions for the ProgramData folder for the plugin to allow everything from the user profile that I log in with to run Media Center... Nothing has worked.
Yet I can use the native Media Center capability for videos, music, Internet TV, etc.
Basically, the upshot is that NO PLUGINS WORK CORRECTLY. I suspect that it is at least partially due to x64, based on the fact that when others have had the same errors that could not be resolved using the normal fixes, they were x64 also. Seems like the 7RC had less trouble from what I have been reading...
I'm very frustrated, and am thinking of returning the s****y Touchsmart and building a Windows 7 32bit or Vista 32-bit box... Maybe using XBMC or something and skipping the tuner all together, though the husband would really like to watch live sports OTA.
I am trying to install a new program and when I put in my cd and it starts to install, this message comes up. How do I fixed this?

View 2 Replies View RelatedA few weeks ago my computer turned off unexpectedly while I was using it. When I tried to start it up again, I got a black screen with a blinking cursor. I tried going into BIOS and changing the startup order to no avail. It's now back on default. I also ran the system diagnostic and it said nothing is wrong.I got a Windows 7 repair disk and attempted to use that. I ran the startup diagonosis and restarted-- again a black screen with a blinking cursor. I restored it to an earlier point and restarted-- black screen with blinking cursor. I then attempted to restore it to other points but got an error message (0x8000ffff) each time. Finally, I tried command prompt and did "bootsect /nt60 ALL" which did nothing. So I tried "bootsect /nt52 ALL" which did nothing. I did both of those again with "/force" (which I'm now guessing was a stupid move, but I was desperate to try anything) and now when I restart I get a black screen with "Invalid partition table". When I try to go to system restore now it tells me there are no restore points.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a PC with windows vista installed. I recently bought windows 7 home premium and installed a fresh copy of it. Every time I download some software like Chrome, VLC, iTunes , it downloads fine, but when it has to install it gives strange errors. I have seen all kinds of errors.
E.g.: VLC gives NSIS error.
Microsoft Security Essentials gives "File Corrupt Error".
Got certificate invalid error for some other software. if I download zip files, they fail with CRC check.
Just to be sure it wasn't hardware issue, I installed vista as a second OS and that works fine. I am really uncertain what is causing the issue (seems network related though). I had an old router and just purchased a new linksys router. Other configurations are: Core 2 Quad, EVGA SLI ready motherboard, 4GB DDR2 ram, ASUS EN210 gphx card.

I have a system that I'd like to clone to an SSD. The source disk is an HDD that is currently using two partitions. I'd like to just move the C partition to an SSD, but my only question is, what cloning apps would allow the SSD to be recognized properly, or would Windows 7 pick up the fact it is an SSD drive and adjust the OS accordingly, including enabling TRIM.
If it matters, the SATA controller is already set to AHCI, and the target drive is a Crucial C300.
Forgot to mention, I had been using Partition Wizard 7.0 (bootable iso) in the past, but never with an SSD.
I rarely need to send/receive a FAX, but I would like to know how before I need to. In the past, I had a dialup FAX modem, but now I'm on cable, and I never thought about FAXing until just now. My printer also has a FAX function, but the only driver available for it on Windows 7 is the one that Windows 7/Windows Update installs. In the Windows FAX/Scan program, the scanner works perfectly, but When I try to creat a new FAX, it says that I need a FAX modem. I have no idea of whether my cable modem is capable of that or not, but when I select to send a FAX, a window appears stating that I need a fax modem or server, but when I select to use a local modem, an error appears saying that I need to contact the administrator (me). From the interface, the only thing that appears to be for setting this up is the Tools>Options menu, but when I click on that, nothing happens. The first question is whether it is typical for a cable modem to be able to handle a FAX or not?

I did some research and it seemed without moving up to Alien Ware this was the best I could do for the money.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've put together a new clone system with the intent of running 64-bit Win 7 Pro on it. Until it becomes available, I have 32-bit XP Pro installed on it. Nothing is overclocked, in fact, the memory is "underclocked" for stability. I'd rather have it stable than gain some trivial performance improvement.
Previously, when I first built it up, I installed 64-bit Ubuntu "Jaunty" on it with 8 GB of RAM installed in it (4 X 2GB). The Linux distro installed and was perfectly stable.
To get a "heads up" on Win 7 issues, I downloaded and installed the trial Enterprise edition. Since I couldn't find any MD5 for the ISO, I downloaded the file twice and did a binary compare on the two downloads to ensure they were the same. Also, I see that the Java applet that downloads the ISO file also has some kind of "verify process" built-in that runs at the end of the download (a checksum?). I burned a DVD in XP Pro using Nero 8 with data verification on (after burning, it reads the burned disk and compares the disk's contents with the ISO file).
Since 32-bit XP Pro can't even fully use 4 GB, I uninstalled 4 of the 8 GB (two modules) when I installed XP on the box. When the entire 8 GB was in the MoBo, I ran MemTest86+ for long periods without errors. To do so, however, I had to "underclock" the memory to DDR2-800 speeds. It couldn't successfully run at DDR2-1066 speeds. A problem that, by checking various support BBS's, was found to be common with my MoBo and the RAM modules in question. After pulling the two modules, I left the memory timing at the conservative settings. I also let MemTest86+ run overnight and got no errors with the two modules installed. My plan is (or, was) to put the entire 8 GB of RAM back after I got 64-bit Windows 7 running on it.
One night while loging off,I noticed a small memo from "cnet" specifying that by running their testtracker software, i could isolate the reaon why i got the apparent error and a poosible clue as to what to do to alleviate it. i read the info on the memo and proceeded and found that a "date" was missing or had been unabled to be updated on a file due to the rules laid down and that prevented an update on he particular file. (only found that out much later.) the date was only the beginning and the the abilities of cnet and finding where to go in the application left me totally lost. i need help in in knowing ho and what exactly to do when the date is accidentally or intentionally changed. and what occurs after that point. does the date affect anything other area.

The only difference is that now, my OS is on an SSD drive (OCZ Petrol). However, I note that my memory usage is constantly increasing; even with only background apps running, I was up to 7GB. When I check Task Manager, I see that the "System" process's "Handles" count is constantly increasing. As I speak, it's almost at 1,000,000; last night I saw it get up to 4,000,000.
