"an unspecified error occurred during system restore (0x8000ffff)"I made a restore disk on my 64bit win7 desktop for my 64bit win7 laptop because windows stopped loading. Now when I try different restore points I get the same problem. Should I make a new disk? What else could I try?I have a normal stock dell desktop with windows 7 borrowed my grandmothers laptop. It is an Acer Aspire 5736Z-4790 w/ anIntel Processor. Last night after trying to install some files to make some cheat programs I use for an online game (I have loaded same programs 10x on other computers so I doubt its related to the programs themselves) One thing I did do was try to delete a winhttp.dll file in system32 or the WOW one(for 64bit computersorget the folders name)and replace it with another one(Directions for the cheats said to make sure that winhttp.dll was in sys32) and while trying to do that windows would not let me so I read somewere that there is a program that lets you "take ownership of a file" so you can override permissions. I then took ownership of sys32 and maybe the 64bit folder as well. It still did not let me replace any files in sys32 so I then restarted and when windows opened again, desktop loaded then an error message came up, then it restarted itself, and repeated, but after the second time it restarted itself windows would not load. After the Acer anufacture screen, just the blank black screen with the blinking line.

i am trying to create a restore point in my system but everytime i am getting this message: Error message was: "System Restore" did not complete successfully. I have spent several intense days trying to figure out file sharing and networking. Yesterday I deleted all documents from the Document Library. I did not think they were literally in that location. Whatever they are all gone. I wondered if I could restore and get them back. Some of them did come back after the first restore. Then I thought I should just restore to about two weeks ago and I would undo all the changes I have been making and could start over. This is what I get.
Can not find Drive C:? I opened My Computer and looked at the Properties of Drive C: for some insight. I found a tab that said Restore previous version. I get a nice list of previous versions that I can open or copy but the restore button is not enabled. I was able to open one of the versions and copy My Documents and I got all my deleted documents back. I saved them to a different drive. What I need to do to get my restore function back on line in case I need to use it later?

My friend has a fairly new Sony computer, when he turns it on it comes up with the windows 7 logo and then after that is stuck on a black screen.
I have tried pressing f8, repair your computer then system restore however I keep getting the 0x8000ffff error. I have tried a few different restore points but still the same.

Computer was running fine until I used a safe mode windows firewall sweeper in order to get rid of this nasty Trojan horse. The program ran fine and it delete just the Trojan horse "no other program or files were removed" I've tried several times to system restore but still the same error message.
Is it possible it did something to my registry and can clear CMOS work to fix it? I cannot get past the system restore screen and the bios screen can also get command prompt.

I started a chkdsk on a Windows 7 64bit computer that got stuck at startup repair. Before that though, I was looking around, the damage seems to be the windows files got messed up after an update. My computer data was intact when I looked around booted through a recovery cd and I checked again via a ubuntu live cd. My question is that the chkdsk d: /f apparently stopped in the middle and gave the following message:An unspecified error occurred <6672732e637878>Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50What does that mean? Is it terrible? I just restarted the chkdsk anyway and as of now, it is finding less unreadable segments, but is there a risk of data loss?

I recently re-installed windows and am now trying to install the DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010). All goes well, it installs everything, but as it finished I get this error: I have tried redownloading, using other installers and updating my graphics drivers. Nothing will work. It's probably worth mentioning that the first time I tried installing, about a week ago, my computer totally froze in the middle of the install and I had to force restart.

I am trying to turn of VSS on the drive that I use as my parity drive for my flexraid configuration. A few weeks ago my computer turned off unexpectedly while I was using it. When I tried to start it up again, I got a black screen with a blinking cursor. I tried going into BIOS and changing the startup order to no avail. It's now back on default. I also ran the system diagnostic and it said nothing is wrong.I got a Windows 7 repair disk and attempted to use that. I ran the startup diagonosis and restarted-- again a black screen with a blinking cursor. I restored it to an earlier point and restarted-- black screen with blinking cursor. I then attempted to restore it to other points but got an error message (0x8000ffff) each time. Finally, I tried command prompt and did "bootsect /nt60 ALL" which did nothing. So I tried "bootsect /nt52 ALL" which did nothing. I did both of those again with "/force" (which I'm now guessing was a stupid move, but I was desperate to try anything) and now when I restart I get a black screen with "Invalid partition table". When I try to go to system restore now it tells me there are no restore points.

I downloaded the .exe for 7 Home Premium from the UK Ultimate Steal site. It says it's preparing setup1.box, but eventually it gives me an error message saying "Unspecified Error".
The .iso is equally annoying, I burned it to a DVD and tried to get my laptop to boot from the DVD drive. It waited a moment and then booted from the hard drive. I burned to a different DVD and attempted to boot from DVD drive, it did the same. I then tried to boot a DVD containing Ubuntu. This booted perfectly fine.

Running Win 7 Home with all latest updates. Why can't I access all Windows 7 functions in normal way, yet I can access them directly by a workaround? I recently found that I could not access the administrator functions for computer management on my home computer. For instance, when right clicking on the main "Computer" icon on my desktop and selecting "Manage" I would get an unspecified error. Going in through control panel I could not access many system admin tools and when I try I get error of you may not "have the appropriate permissions" This applies to "Services" "Component Services" "Computer Management".
Workaround: Today I found that I can open the administrative tool folder in Explorer directly and then right click on one of the management functions and select "Run as Administrator." Then it let's me in OK and I can control things. It's only the usual ways of accessing these controls that I can not now do. This is my personal computer and I'm logged on as administrator, the only account on the system, AND it is telling me I can't access all the files on my own computer's hard drive that you normally use to manage win 7. It's not networked files I'm trying to use but my own Win 7 computer's hard drive, e.g. I get the error when I click on own Desktop Computer Icon and select "Manage."

I keep getting Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found error whenever I try to connect to any other computer (running windows 7 ultimate) on my network. I have another computer with windows 7 ultimate that does not have this problem. Firewalls are disabled on all computers. Computers all ping fine. Can ping by name too. If I try to connect via IP address, I get Error Code: Error0x80004005 Unspecified error.

So yesterday in the early AM's I was browsing my internet and all the sudden, bam.i lost my internet.No reason at all, it just happened. This is only my computer, everything else works fine (If internet is out, our TV's don't work)When I go to my little internet icon in the taskbar, it says Unidentified Network and I have no internet access what so ever.When I run CMD and use ipconfig /release I get this:"An error occurred while releasing interface Loopback Pseudo-Interface 1 : The system cannot find the file specified."I also got this error before:"An error occurred while releasing interface Local Area Connection : An address has not yet been associated with the network endpoint." I bought my HP Pavilion dm4 about a month ago and until recently, it had been working great and really fast while on the internet. Then lately, it started to load normal pages at half its speed, taking time to even load google. When playing MMOs like World of Warcraft, I was a lot laggier than i normally am, dropping framerates by 30-40 per second, even though my task manager said nothing else was running in the background. I thought something was wrong and my suspicions were correct after i found my WoW account to be hacked. I managed to recover my account and change the user/pass but my computer was still slow so i suspected that it was a virus.I uninstalled Norton Antivirus because it couldnt pick up on anything and got Sunbelt Vipre to try and solve the issue. Unfortunately, Vipre didn't pick up on anything either. I wanted to try to System Restore to remove any sort of keylogger or virus that was causing my computer to be so slow and hack my accounts. But when I tried to do the restore, picking the nearest restore point, it was stuck at "Initializing System Restore..." for nearly 3 hours. I had to hard reset the computer and try again at a different restore point, but I got the error message, "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's systems files settings were not changed. The file or directory is corrupted and undreadable (0x80070570)." Then after clicking Run System Restore it gives me the error message "There was an unexpected error: Catastropic failure (0x8000FFFF)" I've also tried the following:-CheckDisk in safe mode, using command prompt as admin, and checkdisk at startup (this one took the longest, nearly 4 hours, and when i woke up the next morning i hadnt seen any changes)-Defrag in safe mode and normal (either way it would get stuck on 79% Analysis and then freeze), I managed to get defrag to work after a few resets and after disabling my antivirus/firewall. Still it did not make a difference and I was still unable to System Restore.-SFC using command prompt as adminPlease help as I really cannot afford to buy another computer and other than the fact that it is running at half its speed and cannot system restore, the computer is able to function normally.

I've noticed that I am unable to use System Restore - each time I try to restore an older point, I get the message: "System Restore did not complete successfully, Your computer's files and settings were not changed. Details; System Restore could not access a file. This is probably because an anti-virus program is running on the computer . Temporally disable your antivirus program and retry System Restore. An unspecified error occurred during System Restore, (0x80070005)" The only anti-virus program I am using is Windows Security Essentials. Previously I also had Comodo Firewall (Free version) installed, but System Restore failed to work even when I disabled or uninstalled the Firewall.Previously I was using a program called Soluto to help my laptop boot up more quickly, and when I uninstalled it, I tested System Restore and it worked. I assumed that Soluto was the reason why I could not use System Restore earlier, but apparently it is not the case, as it turns out that I am still unable to use System Restore.
For some reason, this problem happens on both my Windows 7, 64-bit machines. One is a self-assembled small form factor desktop, another is an Asus UL80VT laptop. I can only assume that perhaps one of the programs that I have installed on both machines has broken System Restore, but despite many attempts, I am still unable to figure out exactly which program seems to be the problem.

The last microsoft updates that were downloaded failed to run properly and I had to roll back the machine a couple of days. When I do this I always get an error at the end saying system restore failed, it may be your anti-virus dadadada.I disable the real-time protection but no matter. I still get this error but the machine does get rolled back. I don't understand why I am getting this error when things appear to be restored to an earlier date.. ???Also, anyone else have problems with the last windows update release on Tuesday?

Now on to the issue I have run into.
** I am currently running WIN 7 Ultimate 64 Bit RTM **
Every single time I try to use system restore, it comes back with the exact same error, on reboot:
{"System restore did not complete successfully. Your computer's system files and settings were not changed. Details:
Unspecified error occurred during System Restore. (0xc0000043)"}
I have tried different system restore points, (within Windows), but it does not seem to fix the issue. I have also tried disabling my security software, (KIS 2010), and that doesn't seem to help either.
The puzzling thing is that when I run system restore in safe mode it seems to work no problem, but it just will not work within windows itself, (normal boot).

I attempted to do a system restore as my laptop (Sony Vaio VGN-NW26M) was very slow and the internet browser was not working. No scans or diagnostics showed up any problems.Halfway through the system restore the laptop crashed and restarted. I was then confronted with the error message "Bootmgr missing, press Ctrl+alt+del" I tried to boot the laptop using a recovery disc, however I get as far as the blue welcome screen and I get the error 0x4001100200001012 - the computer then restarts.I am not bothered about any of the data - I have backed it all up.

I am having major problems with System Restore for my HP Pavilion Windows 7 Home Premium desktop PC. Here's what happens - If I try and create a restore point I get Error 0x8004231F insufficient storage space for shadow copy. RAM is over 800 megs. There are no restore points and I cannot create any more either. I also get these errors from time to time when trying to system restore - Error 0x80073AFD and Error 0x8000FFFF Missing MUI File(s) but what MUI Files are missing or how I can find them and reinstall the damned things it does not tell me! I use Norton SS and various other security software.
One other post here suggested upgrading my Real Player which I did and although it's a nicer player and I like it better it did nothing to allow me to find my shadow copy pages or fix my restore points issue or even allow me to use system restore. I had a problem with Norton which came up with false readings under registry issues and an Error 2147212513 could not create a restore point in system restore. They did try and fix my PC and I think they screwed up system restore when they did but they of course deny it! What to do to get my system restore back up and running again and how to make it create restore points and how to do this shadow copy crap?
