Allow Access Only To Certain Folders Within A Share Based On User?

Aug 10, 2012

This seems like a basic concept, but I can't quite figure out how to make it happen. In a domain environment with Windows 7 systems, I want to create a shared folder that all domain users have access to. However, when any domain user accesses the share, they should only be able to access certain subfolders. For example, assume the shared folder is \servershareme, and it contains subfolders aaa, bb, ccc, and ddd. Further assume that there are three domain users: user1, user2, and user3. How can I allow user1 to browse shareme, but not open any of the subfolders; allow user2 to browse shareme and also open any of the subfolders;allow user3 to browse shareme but only open subfolder aaa?

User Folders Located On Network Share

Dec 2, 2009

When using WinXP - I changed the location of the my documents folder to a shared location, which would automatically enable off-line files for the local my documents folder.

I'm trying to do the same thing with Windows 7. Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

I tried changing the location of the my docs folder in Windows 7 but a duplicate folder which cannot be deleted shows up.

NTFS And Share Permissions - Cannot Allow User To Create New Files Or Folders

Nov 8, 2012

With NTFS and Share permissions is there any way I can allow a user to (in a specific folder):

- Edit and overwrite existing files (like a notepad file)
But
- Not be allowed to create new files or folders

I have spent quite a while staring at the special permissions screen. When reading about the meanings of the special permissions from the Microsoft, it says that the "Create Files/Write Data" permission allows for the overwriting of existing files but it also allows for the creation of new files. Is there some way i can have one without the other? Split the permission? I have also been told that there is a flaw to this as when you open a word document it creates a temp file in the folder where the word document is, and having permissions set this way would cause the word document not to be able to open because it couldn't create that temp file.

Moving User Folders - Additional Folders Appear

Jul 9, 2012

I have just done a clean install of Win 7 Pro 64. I have set up four accounts and for each one I have moved the user folders to a separate hard drive by using the Right Click Properties > Location > Move. I have done this for the following folders:

- Desktop
- Downloads
- My Documents
- Favorites
- Links
- My Music
- My Pictures
- Videos

I have done it exactly the same way on each account (and more than once! I've been imaging the disk and have restored backwards a few times.)

The problem is, on three of the accounts, when I move the My Music, My Pictures, and Videos then they do move correctly but three rogue folders appear named Music, Pictures and Videos. And I can't delete then since they are system folders.

But the weird thing is that this does not happen on one of the accounts!

how to get rid of the extra folders as they're cluttering up the users home folder and causing confusion.

Share A Folder That Has Sub Folders ?

Dec 18, 2012

I am trying to share a folder that has sub folders (for example, username>documents). I change the sharing to share the folder of username, and I allow the network users to change the files. this is in xp. i access it from my win 7 machine, and when i try to access documents, it says that it cannot access it because I don't have permissions. Is there a way to cascade this sharing change, instead of having to manually change the sharing permissions of each folder?

I was wondering if it's possible to share files and/or folders over the internet with your friend? By sharing I mean both people accessing the same folders and when someone edits something, the same thing happens on the other side. I know this is possible over the same LAN network, but what I want to know if this is possible if you aren't in the same network.

Can't Access Any Folder By Double Clicking, Can't Access User Accounts Or Dell Backup

Mar 4, 2011

I have a Dell Inspiron 545s Desktop - Intel Duo Core 2.93, 6gb RAM, 720gb HD, 64bit Windows 7

I get the message: (every time I try and open a folder on my c/drive - Can't access Windows Explorer folder on the taskbar and any other folder or file by double clicking it. I can open them by right clicking, then open)
"this file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Please install a progra or, if one is already installed, create an assocation in the Default Programs control Panel".

I can open applications. But, I can not open the folder for them lets say in c:/program files -- the only way to open them is by rightclicking, then open. If I double click, I get the above error message. (same issue with "my documents", "My pictures", etc).

Included with the above problems: I now, can not access User Accounts. When I go into Control Panel, click User Accounts.. I can not manage existing ones, nor can I "Add or remove user accounts". I click the link and nothing happens.

I have someething built into the computer called "Dell DataSafe Backup". Its a recovery partition/part of the HDD that saves all my files for a recovery. However, I can NOT access it. I click the "Dell DataSafe" in my taskbar and nothing happens..

Can Access File Share By Ip But Not By Name

Sep 23, 2010

Our network runs on a 2008 active directory domain, and our domain controller also is an internal DNS server; we have an additional server that is our internal web server and hosts a RAID 1 mirrored file share for everyone to put their data (which we have folder redirection configured on for the My Documents folder, and people also access it as a mapped network drive). It all works flawlessly, except on two client computers.

1. The two clients can ping the file server both by name and IP.

2. Clients can can log into the file server by remote desktop, by name.

3. Nslookup shows that the clients can communicate with the DNS server and resolve the domain name to the correct IP address.

4. Clients can access the internal sites at http://<file server>

5. Clients cannot access the file share at \<file server>, but can access it at \192.168.1.104.

6. I have already flushed the DNS cache on the client machines.

Its really odd, because it would seem like this is a DNS issue but everything else works: http dns works, nslookup works, and I already flushed the DNS cache. These are the only computers having any issues at all. All the computers on the network have their dns server manually assigned, and all the servers have a DHCP reservation so their IP wont change.

Can't Access Network Share

Aug 20, 2009

I have a few computers on the network and they have shared files.I can see their shares fine, they can't see mine.

192.168.0.1 ->this doesn't work for them, they keep getting the error that they don't have permission to acess it.

192.168.0.1SharedFolder

this works for them. They are mixed machines, vista, windows7 but they all get the error when trying to connect directly to my ip.

I tried enabling and then disabling homegroup(not using it btw) turning password protected sharing on and off, NOTHING works

What does one have to reset/fix in order to connect to the ip and see the shares on that machine.

Network Access To One Particular Share Denied

Oct 18, 2011

Background: Last weekend we changed the domain name and migrated all accounts, users, computers, etc.

We have one Windows 7 workstation giving us trouble - the user no longer could connect to their personal folder share (mapped to the U: drive). In troubleshooting, we discovered that NO user, including the domain admin, has access to that share when logged into that box. All accounts have full access when logged into any other computer on the domain. All other shares on same server (Windows Server 2008) can be accessed.

We have renamed the host, re-assigned the IP, dropped the box out of the domain and back again, triple checked all permissions, but no one can access this share...from this box...including the domain admin.

Losing Access To Network Share?

Aug 16, 2011

I'm doing some work for a company who has 13 computers networked together. I just upgraded 3 of their computers to Windows 7 machines. One of them is being used as a database server, but is not running any sort of server software. It's a Windows 7 Pro 32 bit machine, with network access to the folders required for the database shared to "Everyone", and password protected sharing turned off. The problem computers are running Win XP SP3. Windows Firewall is turned off (which is required by one of the databases..I still don't understand exactly why), and I'm running Microsoft Security Essentials on them currently for antivirus.

Randomly, and for no reason that I can get to the bottom of, 3 of the machines lost connection to the shared network folder that the database uses. At one point, I narrowed down the issue to being something caused by Symantec Endpoint Protection (there was a bug in the version they had that could cause this problem) and the only way to fix it was by running Symantec's CleanWipe utility. This worked on 1 of the machines as a permanent fix. On the other two however, the issue continues to occur. If you try to launch the database program, it will lag and freeze windows explorer. If you try to access the shared folder from My Network Places, it will also lag up and freeze. Running CleanWipe again fixes the problem, but it apparently is only temporary. Now the strange thing is: I can boot the computers in safe mode when this happens, and have full access to the network shares. When I boot back into windows afterwards, the access will go away again. I can also access shared folders on any other computer in the network, just not this particular one regardless of being in safe mode or not.

Access Network Share Without Mapping?

Apr 5, 2012

I want to know if I can access a network share (for CMD line copy) that requires a username and password without mapping it.

The reason is for the purpose of copying backups. If I were to map the drive, any virus/malware could infect the share, defeating the purpose.

I know I can copy to the share if use the same account/passwords on both machines and just do xcopy \pcname\sharename..... I was hoping to avoid creating/changing accounts on the machines.

I know I can map the drive using netuse and then kill it after the copy. This isn't perfect, but I guess if there is no other way, it will pass.

Re-Naming User Folders?

Apr 7, 2011

I recently bought a pre-owned laptop. The previous owner, Sara, has cleaned out her files etc, but her name remains as a locked folder in user profiles.* I have created a 'Steve' user name as my default admin user. It does not appear in the user folders, where the Sara, Default user folders are* The Sara user name does not appear in the control panel under users, but all items I've copied from my external drive onto the desktop ready for installations etc, are in the Sara 'Desktop' folder within the main 'users' folder - if I deleted the Sara user, it will delete all the stuff I've copied across onto my desktop (memory is gone now, but maybe I copied across my stuff onto the desktop before I created my Steve admin user).* When I paste my favourites folders into the Sara folder, it does not show up when I launch Google Chrome* I am definitely logged in as Steve, as I can see it on the sart menu* I have googled this, and there's info re copying the data from one user to a newly created non-admin user, but options to copy from Sara user are greyed out.

Can't Move User Folders

Aug 11, 2011

I have a main folder named after the user acct (I believe it's called the User Folder???), which by default contains 13 other folders, such as My Documents, My Pictures, etc. (There are a bunch of hidden folders in there as well)I'm using some file backup software that has a plug-in to backup the entire My Documents folder. In XP, I simply moved any desired folders into My Documents for backup. What I've found in Windows 7, is these "user" folders seem to be locked in this main folder, and when moved into My Documents, the original folder magically reappears in the main user folder. So I end up with 2 identical folders. One inside My Documents, and one in the main user folder. (eg: My Music)My backup software doesn't like this at all.Is there any way to make these folders behave like regular folders that can just be moved around?

User Folders - How To Change Names

Mar 26, 2011

i am selling a laptop to a co-worker but am having troubles changing the user name. This is windows 7 home premium 64 bit. The folders under "users" are the "public" and the my name. I want to change it from my name to their name but it has a lock symbol on the icon and I cannot figure out how to do it. I was able to go into user accounts and change the name there, no problem. But the "users" folder will not change also. How do I do this? I do not want to do a fresh install or anything - this laptop is only one month old but I ended up not liking it. I already installed Abode professional, Office Professional 2010, and a bunch of other software that the buyer is paying me extra for, so doing a clean install would screw that up for them. Is there any way to change the folder name or are they just stuck with it?
