Administrative Permissions And Copying Folders To Another Drive?

I am at my wits end with using windows 7. I am sure this must have been beaten to death on here and I am sorry but I am not sure how to word it to search for the answer.I hook up a spare HD to the USB with the same operating system and every ******** file I try to open on it I have to adjust it for administrator and da da da and I am sick of this, it will take forever to look at the data. How the heck to I fix this once and for all so I can just open what i want to ? I am the administrator...I don't want to be flagged about administrator anything any more.Secondly, if I want to back up data on a stick and there is already a folder of the same name it asks me if I want to merge it. No I dont so I change the name of the file to something different and it STILL always tells me there is a folder that has the same name do you want to merge i

Just bought a new cyberpowerpc from Fry's, installed a 3rd hard drive (Western Digital 3TB). Everything seems okay except when I try to copy any large files/folders to the new drive. I'm using a folder that is 11.3GB with 686 files. I can copy it from drive 1 to drive 2 no problem. When I copy it from drive 1 or drive 2 to the third drive (the 3TB one), it will start copying then sometime soon after, explorer will close itself down and the computer will end up rebooting itself. Sometimes there will be a BSOD and sometimes it will just reboot without the BSOD.
I have tried to attach the dmp files etc...using the recommendations of the forum. I'd like to use this new drive for backups (it's the reason I got a new pc, my old one crashed and I didn't have a good backup system).

I've just recently realized that copying folders to a backup hard drive resets their "created" date. Should my computer ever crash, all my backup files will state to have just been created on that certain date. Me, being the organize-freak I am, have been looking for a solution so my backed up files can have the same time stamps as on my computer right now. I've done a little searching, and have found that people always recommend Robocopy. Problem is, I can't understand a word of the tutorials. How to run Robocopy to carry out what I want? And also just for the heck of it, is Robocopy the only solution? Is there some sort of back up program on Windows 7 that can do that?

I just spent like 18 hours copying 600K files, 1.33 TB, from a USB 2.0 ext. drive to a 1.36 TB USB 3.0 partition, but at the very end I got a handful of prompts to replace folders that already existed in the newly created folder, asked me to merge the original folder with the one just copied on the destination drive, eventually asking for permission to replace thousands of items and that's what it's doing now. I don't know what's going on. It appears that all files are there in both folders on each drive (with the exception of half a dozen that wouldn't copy due to long filenames).
Nearest I can guess is it is writing DOS names in addition to Windows names so the computer is going to spend more than a dozen more hours doing that. Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders Windows Explorer copy wrongly offers to merge folders. The folder being copied that is being merged is called Drive(D), probably from a backup of Win 98SE being restored onto a Win XP machine, so it may resemble a system folder to Windows 7.

I just want to share my problem regarding with the folder copying with the same permissions. Here's the scenario I installed domain server in my company and create a users ofcourse and in client pc we make 2 partitions in it(hard drive) C & D on drive D I make a folder Users with the permissions.
- C Drive OS Installed and basic programs
- D Drive (with Users folder)
This is where I want to put the profiling on every users login on a client pc. My problem is:
1. How can I copy the Users folder in every client pc with the same permissions so I don't need to set in one by one on a client pc.
2. If there's a software or simple program that can do such thing transferring a folder to another pc over network with the same permission.

I am new here and new to Windows 7 which I installed on the weekend in order to run my media through the Windows 7 MC.
I ran into a problem when I try to copy from external HD (USB external drives) or shared network folder.
Every time I try to copy something, and it doesn’t matter how I do it whether it is CTRL+C or right click and then Copy, Windows Explorer crashes.
This is very annoying since I have to then switch to Vista (dual boot) and do it from there.
Is this a known problem?
Are there any workarounds or solutions to this?

I've set up a back up batch file to copy my Documents, Pictures, Music, and Videos folders from my computer to an external hard drive. However, while running the Documents backup, it seems to find, the pictures, music, and videos folders all inside the documents folders labelled "My Music", etc. However, these folders do not exist. When I navigate in explorer to C:UsersusernameDocuments I cannot find a folder labelled "My Music". When I try to navigate to C:UsersusernameDocumentsMy Music it tells me that "access is denied". I cannot find them through command line either. As well, when I try and find the folders on the backup drive, they do not seem to be there either.

I have an image of my the hard drive from my XP system on an external drive. I'd like to copy the entire file structure to the windows 7 hard drive, retaining the folder structure. Then I'd like to set all the folders, sub-folders, and files to read-only to protect myself from accidentally modifying or adding anything.
I am OWNER and the only user at this point. Will probably have one other user in the future whom I will want to also not have permission to modify these folders and files.

I'm running windows 7 ultimate and am trying to install some software off of a secure server at a remote location to my hard drive. The install fails every time because the my user account (an administrator) does not have full write permissions to the program files directory. I have tried taking ownership of the directory, but I don't have permission to change it from TrustedInstaller.
I turned on the built in administrator account and logged in through that, but there is no difference in permission level. When I attempt to change the permission level I get the following error dialog box: An error occurred while applying security information to:
C:Program Files (x86)
Access is denied
Then the following: Unable to save permission changes on Program Files (x86)Access is denied. I've been fighting with this for three days now and I consider myself pretty adept at typical windows bs. Yes, my UAC is set all the way down. That was the first thing I turned off. I also tried shutting down virus protection and firewalls to no avail. Any help here would be awesome since none of the posts I've been able to find say what to do when the admin can't take control from TrustedInstaller.

I am grabbing a text file with a list of users in it. I want to then create folders for all those people and then set explicit permissions on those folders to only allow the users and admin access to it. So for the create user folder, I have...
$Users = Get-Content "C:Users.txt"
ForEach ($user in $users)
{
$newPath = Join-Path \mycomputerUsers$ -childpath $user
New-Item $newPath -type directory
}
This works great as I now have 100 folders created. But how do I use something like....
$acl = Get-Acl "\mycomputerusers$"
$permission = "mydomain$users","FullControl","Allow"
$accessRule = New-Object System.Security.AccessControl.FileSystemAccessRule $permission
$acl.SetAccessRule($accessRule)
$acl | Set-Acl \mycomputerusers$$user
When I try to loop these together it says the folder already exists or the setaccessrule identity references could not be translated. how I loop it in with creating the folder? Or is there a way to just say...create folder based on this username, then take that username and make it the only admin on the folder along with the system admin?

With NTFS and Share permissions is there any way I can allow a user to (in a specific folder):
- Edit and overwrite existing files (like a notepad file)
But
- Not be allowed to create new files or folders
I have spent quite a while staring at the special permissions screen. When reading about the meanings of the special permissions from the Microsoft, it says that the "Create Files/Write Data" permission allows for the overwriting of existing files but it also allows for the creation of new files. Is there some way i can have one without the other? Split the permission? I have also been told that there is a flaw to this as when you open a word document it creates a temp file in the folder where the word document is, and having permissions set this way would cause the word document not to be able to open because it couldn't create that temp file.

I've had an xbox for several years now. A few years ago I set up my computer to stream music to my xbox. It was cool for awhile and it worked fine, but eventually I just stopped using it. Today I decided I would use it again, but I found that wasn't working. No problem, its been a few years and sometimes settings just get lost. I go out on the web to find a guide again that would tell me how to do it, which led me to [URL]. At the part where I name my library and hit "OK", my "OK" button is grayed out. I know I could try and set up windows media center again. Again, I went to Xbox's support at [URL]. Everything was set up fine and dandy and everything worked.
I get back on my desktop to check something in my "My Music" folder. I get the "You need administrative privileges pop-up", which i thought was weird but i hit continue and it worked fine. Now, whenever i try to open ANY folder, sub-folder, or file, not only does it try to tell me I need admin privileges, once i hit continue it says that i don't have permission to that folder, etc. I think that if I were to go in and reset all the permissions that everything would be fine, but I've got a pretty large library and it could take forever to do that. Is there a simpler way, or a setting that I can change so that Windows Media Center doesn't block me from my own files?

My PC was somehow configured so that I cannot copy files from the internal hard drive to a USB pen drive (e.g., to make a back-up).
When I try to do this, I get the following message: "Destination Folder Access Denied You need permission to perform this action."
There is definitely enough room on the USB drive. The USB drive is configured with a password, which I entered correctly after plugging in the drive. After doing this, I am able to see the files from the drive. The configuration is such that I can copy files from the USB drive to the PC's hard drive, but I can't copy in the other direction, which is what I need to do.
This sounds like a Windows permissions issue to me. I have taken ownership of the file in question, and I have assigned full control to that file.

I'm being a little lazy and I know the answer already, but I'm asking anyway in the vain hope.....
One of my HDD's is failing quickly and I 'suspect' that it's the current drive that the beta is installed on (although I'm still not certain) and rather than go through all the nuisance of partitioning / installing on another drive, is there a way to copy the current install (6801) holus bolus to another drive and repair / modify the boot records / registry to make it function?
Alternatively, could I make a bootable image and use that to re-install on a new drive? I've never created an 'image' so that's new territory for me.
As I said, I doubt it's possible but as I've already spent days 'setting up' 6801, I really don't feel like doing it all again so soon, but the way my rigs been acting up, I may not have a choice.
(I've already installed a total of 5 fresh installations in the last couple of days and it's getting time consuming and tiresome)

I had to change the owner and permissions of the C:Windows folder in order to install a particular software. When I changed these settings, I had the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects" box checked.I figure its safe to say I made a mistake. Does anyone know how to return all ownership and permissions to default values without doing a full install of the OS? I tried creating a recovery disc and running a repair, but it didn't fix the issue.I also have no image to restore to.

I know that on Linux machines you type in su to enter password to get to root user but Im not sure how on my own windows machine. I am a 1st year IT student and am learning. I thought I had all the permissions since I am logged into my machine as administrator.

With my Windows 7 residing on it's own on a new SSD drive, now I want to be able to fully access my 2nd drive, my old XP drive from the default Admin acct. created on Windows 7 initial install.
I can read from the 2nd HDD, copy to the new drive, but can't read / write, it just says I don't have permission.
My research so far reveals this TrustedInstaller does not give full blown permissions to a 2nd drive in a situation like this. I am thinking there has to be a way around this without having to be logged in as the built-in Admin always. I just haven't found it yet. It's rather confusing this security and file permissions. I ran into this problem with XP before when I took and switched out disks, and I just had to reset the permissions globally for the entire disk somehow.
I might log in again as the built-in admin and see if it gives me options to change settings for the acct. I think that is the way...

I have a WD myBook that I have been using to store files on. It is connected via a USB to my wireless router. In explorer I can see it in my network section as well as map a drive to it. However, intermittently, it does not allow me to write or delete files on it. I know computers aren't suppose to do intermittently, but that is what it is.There are brief times when I can add and delete items. I just added one file about 20 minutes ago. For several hours before that, it was locked, and it is now again locked.I can go for days without any issues, and then I get a night like tonight where I can't get anywhere.

Today I dual booted Windows 7 and Windows 8. Everything was fine, until I decided I wanted to point my music collection in Win8 to my Win7 music folder (turns out you can't do this right now anyway in the music app). I wanted to make sure that win8 didn't screw with any files so I changed the whole drive permissions in Win8 to have read access, but not write access of my Win7 drive. I did the vice versa for Win7.When I restarted my system I got a "windows created a temporary paging file..." error message and figured out its because I screwed with my file permissions. To fix it I just need to change the permissions back, however now they are all greyed out (even in the (hidden) Administrator account) and I can't figure out how to change the permissions back.
