Windows XP Machine Not Visible On Network?

Jun 21, 2011

I just set up my home network (from scratch) so I could have all my devices in communication with each other. I have 2 PCs running Win 7 x64, an XBOX 360, and one PC with Win XP/SP3. I reset the router and recreated the network, and the win 7 machines can see each other perfectly, but I still cant get the XP machine to see the win 7 computers/have the Windows 7 computers see the XP one. Also I can't get anything into connection with the XBOX.

Can't Open A Shared File On A Windows 7 Machine If It Is Already Open On An XP Machine In Same Network

Jan 23, 2012

I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine. Permissions on the XP that is hosting the database is set to allow everyone. And all the XP machines can access it at the same time.

One File Not Visible Over Network

Feb 1, 2011

I have a "server" (actually just another workstation with a big disk) running Vista. I access files on it over the network from my notebook running Windows 7. I have a directory on the server where I can see, open and edit all but one file - that one file seems invisible from the notebook. The permissions of the files in this directory seem identical. If I make a copy of the invisible file on the server, the copy is visible, but the original is not. If I rename the original file to something else, then rename the copy to the name of the original, then the file that's invisible is the one with the original name, not the original file. This suggests that its the name that's the problem, not some other property of the file. If I try to rename the copy that I can see to the original name using the notebook, I get a message: "This operation can only be performed when you are connected to the network". This is very odd, because I am connected to the network (evidence the fact that when I create a copy on the sever, it's visible from the notebook). If I make sure that I'm not trying to rename the file to a name that already exists on the server (even though I can't see it from the notebook) it makes no difference - I still get the error message.

By the way, the troublesome file is named OrganGEMA.h.svn-base - I have files elsewhere on the server that are called the exact same thing and they don't cause this problem - it's just this one file in this one directory.

Personal Folders Visible On Network?

Nov 18, 2010

I am having a weird issue.I have a network with 3 PC's and 2 PS3's.1. My PC-Win 72. Roommate's-Vista Home Premium 3. His girlfriend's- Vista Home PremiumI have enabled sharing on all the external HDD's that are connected to my Win 7 machine.ll sharing and security has been set accordingly, and works perfect......except for some reason, my USER folder "Jay", is completely visible to both Vista machines.hen I access the Network folder on my Win 7 machine, only the Public folders are visible on the two Vista machines. The strange thing is that when I look at the properties of "Jay" folder, it shows it as being shared, yet in the Advanced sharing window, "Jay" is NOT shared. "users" folder is shared, so I am assuming this is why "Jay" is shared as it is a sub-folder of "users".

And when I look at the permission settings for "Jay", only myself and SYSTEM had permissions. Now, I managed to workaround this by adding another permission rule to the "Jay" folder. I added NETWORK and set it to DENY straight across the board. So now, my roommates can still see my USERS folder, but cannot access it.This, however, is NOT ideal, as this also blocks them from seeing/accessing my PUBLIC folder. I only set the NETWORK deny permissions on "Jay" folder, yet ALL network sub-folders of USERS are blocked.

Files On Network Computers Visible ONLY If Accessed Via IP Address?

Jan 11, 2012

I have 5 Windows 7 computers connected to the same homegroup/workgroup via a Cisco Linksys E1200. All four computers are HPs of various makes, 3 laptops (one of them is a $600 brick) and 2 desktops. Any computer that is awake and online, shows up (with its name) in Network on the other machinesHowever, double-clicking to view files on these computers returns the following message:Code: Windows cannot access \COMPNAMECheck the spelling of the name. Otherwise, there might be a problem with your network. Totry to identify and resolve network problems, click Diagnose.Details: Error code: 0x80070035 - The network path was not found.Diagnose, as expected, did nothing. However, here's the fun bit - when I try to access files on other computers by browsing their IP address, everything works perfectlyFor now, anyway. I'm expecting a sudden degradation any day now.

Machines Not Visible Under Homegroup - Status Showing Joined Network

Mar 8, 2011

Recently I discovered that the Homegroup feature is no longer working on my home network, which consists of one wired pc and one wireless laptop. Both machines running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 SP1. Both machines show the Homegroup status as "joined" in Network and Sharing Center, but neither machine is visible under "Homegroup" in My Computer. What I've tried (applies to both machines)...

- Disable Windows Firewall (no 3rd party firewalls installed)
- Leave Homegroup then rejoin
- Confirmed all needed services are running
- Confirmed IPv6 enabled
- Network Set to "Home"
- Disabled Wlan, using ethernet

Before this problem I had been using homegroup for over a year without incident. I should mention this problem seems to coincide with my upgrade to Service Pack 1, but I really don't want to jump to any conclusions at this point.

Transferring Files To New Machine On Windows 7 Over Network

Feb 21, 2012

I recently got a new PC and transfered all my old settings/documents to the new machine. First off, thats an awesome feature I wasnt even aware of! However, Im concerned about one thing; on my old PC, my wife used to have a profile that she used for work and had some confidential financial documents on. She deleted her profile some time ago when she got her own PC, but could it possbily have transfered her old/deleted documents onto my new machine? I only ask because I mainly use my new PC for work/presentations (in public places). While its unlikely, I just wanted to make sure no one would have access to those old documents should they gain access to my new machine.

Windows 7 Host - Accessing Wireless Network From XP Virtual Machine

Jul 28, 2011

I have an XP virtual machine running on a 64-bit Win 7 host. I have a home wireless network that I need to access from the XP VM in order to use printers attached to the other computers on the network. All computers currently on the network have the same workgroup name. I have networking on the VM set to use the wireless adapter on the host laptop. With this configuration I can see and access the host, but I cannot see nor access any other computers on the network.

Now, it seems to me that I will need to run the XP Network Wizard to set up the network on the VM before I am able to see the network, but after reading dozens of articles and posts on networking a VM, I have never seen this step mentioned. (I am at work now, so I can't test this out on my network until later.) So, my questions are:

(1) Do I need to run the XP Network wizard to get the VM to join the wireless network, and
(2) if I don't need to run the wizard, what DO I need to do to get this to work?

Restore Windows Backup Image Files From Network Location (XP Machine)

Feb 20, 2012

We are a small office, 5 or 6 computers. Only 3 are every day computers, other 3 are "server", admin and extra computer. The three in use every day are new win7pro x64 machines. Our server is xp pro (32bit) with a shared drive as our "server" drive. We access this for all our job related materials, etc. There is no network setup, just shared folders among our workgroup. we just got the new win7pro machines setup and are using Windows Backup function to create system images to the "server" computer in a shared folder. We've got the images created on 2 computers, and can see the .vhd files and associated folder structure. When testing to see if we could restore from these images, we got the error "Cannot locate backup sets on machine, etc."I moved the backup folder to the root of the drive, and made sure it was WindowsImageBackup or whatever the default is, but still could not find it.

No Network Visibility Within The XP Virtual Machine

Aug 5, 2009

Running Windows 7 RC 64-bit. Everything working fine within Windows XP Mode. All of the network and network devices are visible. All systems have same user account and password. Network is workgroup called WORKGROUP.

Per the instructions, I uninstalled the previous versions of Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode, downloaded and installed the new RC versions of these products. Everything installed fine, but within the XP virtual machine I do not have access to any of the other resources on the my network. Previously they were all visible.

I went though the normal XP network set up, but the only thing that is visible within XP is the XP machine itself. My network is a simple non-domain network named WORKGROUP. What do I have to do within the Windows XP Mode virtual machine to see the printers and other systems on the network.

Virtual Machine Booting From A Network Location

Oct 8, 2009

I am looking at a solution to tap into the portability of virtualization across hardware. i.e. if I have my development environment as a VM, I can access it and bring it up from any machine on the network. This will enable me to be not attached to any physical machine and allow me to access my development machine seamlessly from anywhere if it is stored in a network location. I have mainly two questions around such a setup.

1) Is there anyway of hosting the VM without incurring the expense of both the host operating system and the guest operating system? The only functionality of the host operating system to host the VM.

2) Is it viable from a performance stand point to have a VM booted up on a machine from a vhd placed at a network location?

How Machine In Sleep / Hibernate Mode Identified On Network

May 4, 2012

How a machine Windows 7 or XP once goes to sleep/hibernate mode, can be identified on the network to do a Wake-On-LAN. Because the machine is shutdown, the ping does not give a response. In a DHCP environment, when the machine goes to sleep mode, the ip is released so not necessarily the machine can be identified with its IP.

Connecting 1 Windows 7 Machine And 1 Windows Xp Machine To Share Files

Feb 6, 2011

ive got 2 computers hooked up to a router by Ethernet sharing an internet connection, the internet connection works fine for both computers. i would like to share documents also between the computers

-one is a windows xp 32
-one is a windows 7 64

ive set up many networks in the past with a bunch of xp machines without any trouble but now i am having trouble my first step was on the windows 7 machine, i went to control panel -> network and sharing center -> setup a connection or network -> set up a new network this is where i believe i am making a mistake of some kind, it seems that the windows 7 machine is assuming that i want to set up the network wirelessly, when it is connected to the router via Ethernet. it simply brings me to a screen that says choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure, and hangs there with a greyed out next button everything seems to be going fine on the xp machine, i created a new network called "share bear", told it that the computer connects through a residential gateway, enabled file and printer sharing, rebooted the machine, and confirmed that there was a new folder in the network places for shared documents..i went back to the windows 7 machine where it was still hanging, rebooted it, looked for the new network in network and sharing center and it wasn't there, i tried again to "set up a new network" on the windows 7 machine with the same hanging screen

Installing Windows 7 Using An Old HDD On An Old Machine To Install Windows 7 On A New Machine?

Installing W7 using an old HDD on an old machine to install W7 on a new SSD to be used on a new machine.I'm currently using this old machine from '09 and its performance levels have died down a lot. I bought all the components to build a new machine except I didn't want to spend extra money on another HDD to install the OS on my new 180GB Intel SSD. So basically, I want to use the HDD from my old computer, install W7 onto the SSD, then transfer the drive to my new computer, and use it on the machine and just reinstall all my other files.

Secondary HDD Not Visible Windows 7 64bit?

Oct 20, 2012

I recently baught a Clevo Metabox P170EM laptop (the Australian version, i think the US version is by Sager), and it has a 128gb SSD Crucial M4 and a secondary 750gb HDD. I am not actually sure what kind of harddrive it is, all I know is that it is 750gb 7200rpm.I baught the laptop without an OS, as I had a Windows 7 disk already, and I had to go into drive management to format the secondary HDD. That all worked fine, I got it up and running, and was copying data across for a day. I also installed a couple of games (Crysis 1 &2, Dragon Age Origins if it matters) and played them from the secondary drive without a hassle. While playing, I got 122 Windows Updates which required a restart. So I let them install while I worked on clearing up my old laptop.Next time I booted the new one up, all of the icons for the previous games were blank and the HDD was unavailable. It doesn't show up in My Computer or Disk Management or even the BIOS (is that normal?)It also seemingly uninstalled some of my drivers - my nvidia GTX 670M wasn't recognised til I reinstalled the driver from the CD. I tried reinstalling every driver but no luck for the HDD.
