Rogue XP Machine On Network
Jun 5, 2009
I've got a network with 2 Windows 7 and 2 XP PRO SP3 machines
I can see ALL of them on ALL machines but ONE just refuses whatever I do to allow direct access to it from EITHER of the Windows 7 Machines (build 7137 x-64 )
All firewalls off etc.
same user-id passwords etc etc.
What's up with this one XP machine. Windows 7 Networking never seems to work correctly at times. Never have a problem with SAMBA on 'NIX.

I have a small network of six computers. Five of them run XP and I just added a Windows 7 machine. I've got a Microsoft Access 2003 database that all of the computers share that is hosted on one of the XP machines. The Windows 7 machine can access the Access database through the network just fine, as long as no one else is accessing it. However, if someone else on an XP machine on the network is using the file, it won't open on the Windows 7 machine. Doubling clicking the file on Windows 7 gives me the circling blue icon for a second or two, then nothing happens. If the XP user exits the database, then I can open it fine. Permissions on the XP that is hosting the database is set to allow everyone. And all the XP machines can access it at the same time.

recently recovered my files and programs from the Windows Repair Rogue using the helpful tips from this Forum, but my Start Menu wasn't completely restored. I'm able to see my programs, but I can only see the "Computer" link on right in the links section. All the other links are missing (i.e. control panel, help & support, etc). I have attached a picture of how my Start Menu currently looks.

old system was laptop running XP with desktop also running XP. We set up a "shared documents" folder with simple file-sharing on the desktop which the laptop could access when not working out of the office via DSL high-speed router. We just upgraded to a new laptop running 7 Pro and it automatically detected the router and I selected "work network" during setup. I can't even see the desktop on the "new network" dsiplayed on the "new laptop" - do I need to set up a new connection on the XP desktop or what?

I just set up my home network (from scratch) so I could have all my devices in communication with each other. I have 2 PCs running Win 7 x64, an XBOX 360, and one PC with Win XP/SP3. I reset the router and recreated the network, and the win 7 machines can see each other perfectly, but I still cant get the XP machine to see the win 7 computers/have the Windows 7 computers see the XP one. Also I can't get anything into connection with the XBOX.

Running Windows 7 RC 64-bit. Everything working fine within Windows XP Mode. All of the network and network devices are visible. All systems have same user account and password. Network is workgroup called WORKGROUP.
Per the instructions, I uninstalled the previous versions of Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode, downloaded and installed the new RC versions of these products. Everything installed fine, but within the XP virtual machine I do not have access to any of the other resources on the my network. Previously they were all visible.
I went though the normal XP network set up, but the only thing that is visible within XP is the XP machine itself. My network is a simple non-domain network named WORKGROUP. What do I have to do within the Windows XP Mode virtual machine to see the printers and other systems on the network.

Why would 5 of my windows 7 machines be running slow on our school network. I have updated drivers. We also have new laptops which are running windows 7 and access the network wirelessly. These are fine. The Main server is 2008 r2 while the data is stored on a 2003 server.

I upgraded to windows 7 ultimate a few weeks ago (clean install) and since then when I go to access files on my file server (running vista home premium) it takes forever to pull up thumbnails of photos I have stored or any other data for that on the drive. I never had this problem when my comp was running vista home premium as opposed to windows 7 I flashed the BIOS on my mobo to the latest version and I have all windows updates. Any ideas what I can do to speed things up when accessing this drive?

I recently got a new PC and transfered all my old settings/documents to the new machine. First off, thats an awesome feature I wasnt even aware of! However, Im concerned about one thing; on my old PC, my wife used to have a profile that she used for work and had some confidential financial documents on. She deleted her profile some time ago when she got her own PC, but could it possbily have transfered her old/deleted documents onto my new machine? I only ask because I mainly use my new PC for work/presentations (in public places). While its unlikely, I just wanted to make sure no one would have access to those old documents should they gain access to my new machine.

I am looking at a solution to tap into the portability of virtualization across hardware. i.e. if I have my development environment as a VM, I can access it and bring it up from any machine on the network. This will enable me to be not attached to any physical machine and allow me to access my development machine seamlessly from anywhere if it is stored in a network location. I have mainly two questions around such a setup.
1) Is there anyway of hosting the VM without incurring the expense of both the host operating system and the guest operating system? The only functionality of the host operating system to host the VM.
2) Is it viable from a performance stand point to have a VM booted up on a machine from a vhd placed at a network location?

How a machine Windows 7 or XP once goes to sleep/hibernate mode, can be identified on the network to do a Wake-On-LAN. Because the machine is shutdown, the ping does not give a response. In a DHCP environment, when the machine goes to sleep mode, the ip is released so not necessarily the machine can be identified with its IP.

I have an XP virtual machine running on a 64-bit Win 7 host. I have a home wireless network that I need to access from the XP VM in order to use printers attached to the other computers on the network. All computers currently on the network have the same workgroup name. I have networking on the VM set to use the wireless adapter on the host laptop. With this configuration I can see and access the host, but I cannot see nor access any other computers on the network.
Now, it seems to me that I will need to run the XP Network Wizard to set up the network on the VM before I am able to see the network, but after reading dozens of articles and posts on networking a VM, I have never seen this step mentioned. (I am at work now, so I can't test this out on my network until later.) So, my questions are:
(1) Do I need to run the XP Network wizard to get the VM to join the wireless network, and
(2) if I don't need to run the wizard, what DO I need to do to get this to work?

I have a Kodak ESP 5250 printer attached to an XP machine - and have a Windows 7 machine that functions well on the network with the XP machine otherwise, but when I attempt to add a network printer to the Windows 7 machine (the printer is the Kodak mentioned above) I receive the error message above 0x0000000d.

We are a small office, 5 or 6 computers. Only 3 are every day computers, other 3 are "server", admin and extra computer. The three in use every day are new win7pro x64 machines. Our server is xp pro (32bit) with a shared drive as our "server" drive. We access this for all our job related materials, etc. There is no network setup, just shared folders among our workgroup. we just got the new win7pro machines setup and are using Windows Backup function to create system images to the "server" computer in a shared folder. We've got the images created on 2 computers, and can see the .vhd files and associated folder structure. When testing to see if we could restore from these images, we got the error "Cannot locate backup sets on machine, etc."I moved the backup folder to the root of the drive, and made sure it was WindowsImageBackup or whatever the default is, but still could not find it.

ive got 2 computers hooked up to a router by Ethernet sharing an internet connection, the internet connection works fine for both computers. i would like to share documents also between the computers
-one is a windows xp 32
-one is a windows 7 64
ive set up many networks in the past with a bunch of xp machines without any trouble but now i am having trouble my first step was on the windows 7 machine, i went to control panel -> network and sharing center -> setup a connection or network -> set up a new network this is where i believe i am making a mistake of some kind, it seems that the windows 7 machine is assuming that i want to set up the network wirelessly, when it is connected to the router via Ethernet. it simply brings me to a screen that says choose the wireless router or access point you want to configure, and hangs there with a greyed out next button everything seems to be going fine on the xp machine, i created a new network called "share bear", told it that the computer connects through a residential gateway, enabled file and printer sharing, rebooted the machine, and confirmed that there was a new folder in the network places for shared documents..i went back to the windows 7 machine where it was still hanging, rebooted it, looked for the new network in network and sharing center and it wasn't there, i tried again to "set up a new network" on the windows 7 machine with the same hanging screen

I have a small three PC home network. Two PC are running Windows 7 and one running Vista.
All three machines have the same homegroup settings. The ability to view machines on the network is very patchy. One machine can see the others, while another machine can only see one other machine. Sometimes machines cannot see any others on the network.
All machines are connected wirelessly with strong signals through a BT 2700HGV Business Hub router. All of the machines can access the Internet without problems.
All machines run Eset Smart Security with the Windows firewall is turned off.
Any advice to create a stable network would be appreciated.

Installing W7 using an old HDD on an old machine to install W7 on a new SSD to be used on a new machine.I'm currently using this old machine from '09 and its performance levels have died down a lot. I bought all the components to build a new machine except I didn't want to spend extra money on another HDD to install the OS on my new 180GB Intel SSD. So basically, I want to use the HDD from my old computer, install W7 onto the SSD, then transfer the drive to my new computer, and use it on the machine and just reinstall all my other files.

I have a new Dell Inspiron 660 with Windows 7. I have downloaded Java numerous times using the three standard browsers and it will not take/work. I know Java isn't the best program in the world to have on a computer, but I use it for playing games (which is my primary "entertainment" use of the computer). It is frustrating for this not to work.

I just completed a HTPC build consiting of a small ITX form factor case and ASUS CPU/Mobo ITX combo. All I have plugged in is a USB keyboard, mouse, and ethernet (well then of course the HDMI cable to my TV).I have the power settings set so when I push the power button the PC goes to SLEEP. Problem is in the morning I usually wake up to the thing turned back on.No other power saving features have been customized other than the "choose what the power button does" and the rest is set to the Windows default "Balanced" power features. When I push the power button it's usually to go to bed so the mouse and keyboard are undisturbed during the night.I've scoured the settings and I cannot find anything that may cause the machine to wake up unannounced.

My LAN consists of a gateway/router and 4 PCs A, B, C and D. A thru C are Windows 7/64; D is XP32/SP3.
Until a few days ago, everyone saw and could access everyone. Then C stopped seeing D. C can ping D, but it cant see it (in Network or in the network map).
C can still see itself and also A and B.
A, B and D can still see everyone.
Ive tried all the usual fixes from this and other forums: verified that all have same Workgroup name (no Homegroup); checked the IPs and other adapter settings; checked sharing settings; disabled Cs firewall; rebooted everything and everybody. Also tried to use the LLTD hotfix, but Windows reported that my XP-SP3 install already has it.
