Windows 7 Pro Memory Size?

Aug 14, 2011

I'm wondering if it's normal for Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, to take up 51 GBs of space after just being installed. Here's my background,I just installed a copy of Windows 7 Professional to my SSD.I was running Windows 7 Home Premium on the same SSD before, but decided to upgrade to Pro because I got more RAM But, for some really lame reasons, I ended up having an issue and reformatted and re-install the Pro version 3 times today. I reformatted by installing Windows 7 Pro from the disk and "deleting" the SSD partition when selecting a location to install. It works now and appears stable. However, Windows 7 Pro is now consuming almost 51 GBs of my 60 GB SSD.I'm assuming my reformatting went bad somewhere? Selecting all of the files on the drive also says that there's only 12.9 GBs of data.

Changing Virtual Memory/PageFile Size In Windows 7?

Jan 5, 2012

I have a videoediting software that I am runing on 32 bit Windows 7 with 4 Gb RAM, the company that makes the software suggests to set the Virtual Memory/PageFile Size to double the RAM amount.I looked and mine is set to auto, I have many drives and all say none and are grayed out under paging file size for each drive. Which drive should I double the paging file ? the drive the software is installed on ? what about all my other drives, once I take it off auto they will not be managed. Should I set them all to double the RAM and if so how will it affect my system?

Recommended Partition Size For Windows 7 Ultimate?

Jan 15, 2013

I want to repartition my HDD which has a capacity of approximately 80 GB, but it is shown as 74.5 GB in windows disk management app. I have split the hard drive into 3 partitions of equal size each of 24.8 GB and installed windows 7 ultimate (32-bit) on one partition, and the other two are for my data (including documents, music, videos, pictures etc.). In my opinion, 24.8 GB partition is not enough for Windows 7 because it is the only OS that I use and as I install updates and service packs etc, it fills up gradually and leaving only a few GBs of free space left on the Win 7 partition.

Windows 7 Ultimate Scheduled Restore Size Is Getting Huge?

May 7, 2012

This query is concerning how Win 7 Ultimate Scheduled Backup works. These are my needs.Often in the past, Windows 7 has become unstable in some way, such that different pgms including Windows Explorer, and other system tools become corrupt. I decide to re-install Win 7 Ultimate 32bit.I have an external 500Gb drive with an Acronis True Image Home 2009 full partition backup on it. The backup is a fully updated, fully game installed backup, and is way faster to use compared to the individual software installations. Since Windows 7 starts acting up about every 3-6 months for me, I replace it.Recently (last restore) I decided to let win Backup and Restore do a scheduled backup every 7 days. I let Win choose what to backup. I intend to let Win be THE backup to use to replace the OS when needed. I have always had problems running out of space where to let Win Backup to on some drives, so I dedicated a 443Gb partition to Backup only. This is on the other half of a 1Tb drive. (I know in some cases it is not wise to use the same drive, but I put all the important things on another physical drive) I have 4 drives, totaling about 3.8Tb. 2 have XP Pro, and 2 have Windows 7 Ultimate. The main C: is 487Gb, with 231Gb used space. The other half of it is N: 443Gb; on which the Backup is written to each week. The size of the backup is now 407.12Gb. The backup on N: is approaching TWICE the size of the used space on the C: drive! And within about a month there will be no more room.I want mainly to retain a pristine Operating System to reload, along with the basic games which are huge. This will save the time WHEN, not IF Windows 7 begins to fail again. (not saying it is a bad or weak OS, just that it fails for me for reasons needing replacement. If only it were as robust as XP has been in the past.)

1. How can I retain a PERFECT OS and games image to use as a basic unchanged original with Win Backup?

2. As Win gets corrupted, how can I know that the latest Backup I might want to restore from isn't corrupt?

3. Can Backup be set to not make redundant Backups that become so huge, yet maintain the original perfect OS and game set, such as a dated incremental backup that can be used to piece together a C: drive again?

4. How do I know that Backup isn't backing-up malware?

5. If I save the latest backup, and the first one, how big should each one actually be?

6. Can I get into the actual backup files individually to decide if I want to restore from them--the options are limited.

7. Win says that it will work "without taking up more than 30 percent of space on the backup disk". Out of a 443Gb drive letter, there is only 33Gb of space left. All done automatically.

8. Is the fact that there is a total of 4 OS's on this computer making the Backups so large? I would assume it is only doing the C: drive, as I would wish, yet something is getting copied over and over, likely. Again, possibility of the latest backup being corrupted is on my mind.

Short of cloning a new disk to replace the later corrupt one, updating it just prior to copying it over, the only other thing I can see doing is to only run the OS on the C: drive, making it easier to replace, yet that has many inherent problems with pgms not working after the OS is replaced, and needing to reinstall anyway.Sorry about the length of this inquiry, but you can see I need assistance.

FS9 On Windows 7 Ultimate - Insufficient Memory Error

Mar 21, 2012

I have a Intel i5 2500k 3.3Ghz, with 4GB memory running on windows 7 ultimate 64 bits. My problem is, since I changed the OS to this "more advanced", I cannot play Flight Simulator 2004 without this error message that closes the game. "Insufficient memory, please check your hard drive..." My system only has Flight Simulator installed, plus microsoft office and Avg antivirus (not counting with all the system updates, drivers etc). I don't understand this problem, because before this OS, I had Win XP 32 bits, with a lot more programs and addons installed and running, and I never had this problem...even with all the graphics pumped up to the max in the game. My graphic card is Asus En9800GT nvidia with 1gb ddr3 and HD with 400GB still to use (same board and HD used with XP).

Excessive Memory Usage In Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit

Jun 5, 2011

I'm running Win7 Ultimate 32 bit and I believe it's using too much memory. When the system is idle and not even running Steam or Firefox, memory usage is 1.00 GB out of my 2.00 available. I run FRAPS and DisplayFusion (I have two monitors) in the background but they amount to roughly 20MB.I have also disabled most non-essential services as well as unnecessary boot programs. Usually I have ~45 processes running, 15 of which are user processes.I have already made efforts to streamline my OS, and the total memory usage of all my user processes amounts to just under 400 MB (with Firefox and Steam running). That's nice, and it's about what XP idled on.What the hell does Win7 do with 500-600 MB of phantom memory?

Windows 7 Ultimate 64Bit Won't Boot When 'Memory Remap Feature' Is Enabled

Mar 12, 2012

I will start off by stating my relevant PC Specs for this thread:-

Asus P5B Deluxe MoBo
Intel Dual Core E6600 @ 2.40GHz
GeForce 7900 GS 512Mb
2 x 1GB DDR2 800MHz Corsair Value RAM (original) in Yellow Slots A1 & B1
2 x 1GB DDR2 800MHz Corsair Gaming RAM (NEW) in Black Slots A2 & B2

So I have just installed 2 extra GBs of RAM to bring my total to 4GB. After a successful boot and then checking my 'System' info Windows states 4.00GB of memory is installed but only 2.94GB is usable. Therefore I went ahead into my BIOS to enable the 'Memory Remap Feature'.However on reboot the PC gets to the 'Starting Windows' screen and doesn't get any further. The Windows logo doesn't start to appear. It just restarts going through all the usual screens again, eventually giving two options of:-

Launch Startup Repair or Start Windows Normally. The repair never works and Windows will never start normally again until I return to the BIOS to disable the mem remap.I reset the CMOS to Factory Default settings and tried again but did nothing. Also I have never updated the BIOS from the original version as I'm a bit scared to do so.I have looked hear for info on voltages and clocking but didn't get anywhere. Well got an overclock at 3.60Hz but only ran in Safe Mode. Obviously this is slightly irrelevant the above but was just trying stuff out and trying to learn more.

Windows 7 Explorer.exe Running At Total Memory After A Few Minutes "memory Leak"

Oct 28, 2012

To start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop. I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues. When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything. I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be. In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow? Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

Troubleshooting Excessive Memory Use (Memory Leak) After Playing Video

Oct 6, 2012

i am having a problem with my memory getting tied up / used up and not being able to access it again until i reboot.

machine: dell xps studio 8100
os: win 7,
processor: i7 2.8
ram: 16gb (max it will take)
video: ati radeon 5700 (running 3 monitors)

versions: as far as i know i am running current versions of everything, including video drivers, flash, chrome, etc. (i've tried running chrome with both the build in version of flash and the system version -haven't seen a difference)

browser: i nearly exclusively run chrome / canary with auto-updates so am at the latest builds.what seems to cause me to use up / run out of memory is after i play videos (Internet, netflix, etc.), the memory seems to get used, but is not returned to the system, even if the browser is closed and re-opened.right now for example things are working fine; i rebooted my system a couple hours ago (but have not played any videos). i have adobe lightroom running, picasa, chrome and canary (currently 4 web browser windows open with 52 tabs open). task manager currently shows me using 8.20gb of ram, that seems pretty reasonable to me.

normally my system will keep running properly (if a program is closed, memory is freed up) right up until i start to play any videos (Internet, netflix, etc.) then it will start using up more memory. (of course i expect it to use more memory during playback) however, even if i restart the browser, the memory does not get freed back up. for example, just prior to the reboot, with everything closed, i was using right around 8gb of ram. once i rebooted, i was using 1.something gb of ram prior to opening any programs.however, once i start playing some videos, i never seem to be able to get my ram freed back up again unless i reboot the whole system. this is not just a problem with how much memory the system shows as being available, i frequently actually run out of memory. (task manager will show me as using around 15gb and then everything starts swapping out like crazy).

Chkdsk High Memory Usage / Memory Leak?

Jun 1, 2009

I find that if I run chkdsk and watch the memory usage in task manager it jumps by about 50MB every 2 seconds or so until it either finishes or hits around 3.2GB at which point my physical memory shows 99% used (I'm running 4GB), and the system of course slows to a crawl.f you just run a quick chkdsk on your boot drive you may not notice it, but try running something longer like chkdsk /r on a flash drive or chkdsk /f on a bigger internal drive (but not your OS drive as this would require a reboot) and watch the memory usage climb. I have duplicated this on both systems I have running Windows 7. My XP machine (checking the same USB flash drive) uses a much more normal amount of memory for chkdsk (20 - 30 MB).

Increased Memory Usage With Added Memory?

Nov 5, 2011

I just built a new computer and started with 8GB of memory. A few weeks down the line I purchased another set of the same memory because it was on such a good deal and had great reviews (newegg). It also was working well for me, so I figured maybe more could be better.

I haven't noticed any decrease/increase in system performance except Alt-Tabbing has recently got slower. Also, Windows 7 was sitting tight on 1.3gb to 2gb of memory usage prior to the extra 8 (now 16) being added. Even when gaming, it went up to like 3gb. Now that I've added the extra it's going up to 4.5gb or better. Also, is it possible to speed up my alt-tabbing? It seems to have a good 3-4 second pause in it instead of being immediate like it was.

Computer specs:
Windows 7 HP 64-bit
gSkill 16gb 1866 memory (BIOS shows it at 1866, too)
Intel i5-2500k Sandy Bridge (OC'd 4.6 with factory Overclock presets)
ASRock z68 Extreme4 mobo
