Windows 7 Explorer.exe Running At Total Memory After A Few Minutes "memory Leak"

Oct 28, 2012

To start, I have Windows 7, on Sony Vaio laptop. I have been working on the issues with the malware removal team, but now machine looks clean, I am still having issues. When starting the computer and going to the task manager, I can watch explorer.exe start at about 18K memory usage and then grow constantly until it is running with almost all of the computer's physical memory after about seven min. I cannot get the context menu to show up after a few min by right clicking on anything. I had been experiencing "freezing" while playing Eden Eternal (an online role playing game) before that, which made me consider malware and seek help here at BleepingComputer. The freezing has ended, last time I played on that machine at least, but now there seems to be some issue with the explorer.exe taking all of the memory. I haven't been using the machine since I don't trust that there's not something running in the background that shouldn't be. In resource monitor there were "connections" that had "-" for both the name and the PID, but I don't know if that was the malware of if that's normal somehow? Issue with explorer.exe seems to be limited to only one user account, and not the other one. That is to say that if I log on one of the other accounts explorer.exe behaves normally, as far as memory usage.

Troubleshooting Excessive Memory Use (Memory Leak) After Playing Video

Oct 6, 2012

i am having a problem with my memory getting tied up / used up and not being able to access it again until i reboot.

machine: dell xps studio 8100
os: win 7,
processor: i7 2.8
ram: 16gb (max it will take)
video: ati radeon 5700 (running 3 monitors)

versions: as far as i know i am running current versions of everything, including video drivers, flash, chrome, etc. (i've tried running chrome with both the build in version of flash and the system version -haven't seen a difference)

browser: i nearly exclusively run chrome / canary with auto-updates so am at the latest builds.what seems to cause me to use up / run out of memory is after i play videos (Internet, netflix, etc.), the memory seems to get used, but is not returned to the system, even if the browser is closed and re-opened.right now for example things are working fine; i rebooted my system a couple hours ago (but have not played any videos). i have adobe lightroom running, picasa, chrome and canary (currently 4 web browser windows open with 52 tabs open). task manager currently shows me using 8.20gb of ram, that seems pretty reasonable to me.

normally my system will keep running properly (if a program is closed, memory is freed up) right up until i start to play any videos (Internet, netflix, etc.) then it will start using up more memory. (of course i expect it to use more memory during playback) however, even if i restart the browser, the memory does not get freed back up. for example, just prior to the reboot, with everything closed, i was using right around 8gb of ram. once i rebooted, i was using 1.something gb of ram prior to opening any programs.however, once i start playing some videos, i never seem to be able to get my ram freed back up again unless i reboot the whole system. this is not just a problem with how much memory the system shows as being available, i frequently actually run out of memory. (task manager will show me as using around 15gb and then everything starts swapping out like crazy).

Chkdsk High Memory Usage / Memory Leak?

Jun 1, 2009

I find that if I run chkdsk and watch the memory usage in task manager it jumps by about 50MB every 2 seconds or so until it either finishes or hits around 3.2GB at which point my physical memory shows 99% used (I'm running 4GB), and the system of course slows to a crawl.f you just run a quick chkdsk on your boot drive you may not notice it, but try running something longer like chkdsk /r on a flash drive or chkdsk /f on a bigger internal drive (but not your OS drive as this would require a reboot) and watch the memory usage climb. I have duplicated this on both systems I have running Windows 7. My XP machine (checking the same USB flash drive) uses a much more normal amount of memory for chkdsk (20 - 30 MB).

Memory Usage Goes Up Gradually (Memory Leak)

Memory Usage Goes Up Gradually (Memory Leak)When I starting the Windows (in the first few hours) everything is normal But after 1 day or 2 (sooner or later) the amount of available memory gradually goes down and the physical memory usage increasing. Also when memory reaches that point, I can't access any drive in the HDD; because everytime I want to open any folder, the following error appears :c: is not accessible.Insufficient system resources exist to complete the requested service At this point, I even can't shutdown or restart Windows normally; I must restart windows manually by pressing the restart button.after restart, everything goes to normal again; but this problem appears again and again ...

RAM Filling Up, Memory Leak Outside Windows 7?

Dec 22, 2009

In the last week or so, I have to reboot my pc almost every day because the RAM usage gets up to 93% and I can't do anything, even launch taskmanager. When I've caught it before it was too full, I saw that almost nothing was listed as using RAM (system was at like 80MB). Essentially, RAM is "in use", but the use is not explained by taskmgr or perfmon.I'm prepared to learn that it's a BIOS or mem controller issue, but it never happened in several years of XP and Vista on the same rig. Also I see I'm not the only one with the same issue on Win 7 64bit: Win 7 64bit Ram Filling Up Problem?

IE8 Memory Leak

Jan 31, 2012

Reading around I thought IE eliminated it's memory leaks but I definitely have it when I use IE8. I typically have three windows of IE8 open and within one will have multiple tabs, maybe five or six at the most. Over time memory usage definitely grows and is not reclaimed as tabs or even windows are closed. Only way I can reclaim memory is by closing all windows and putting computer to sleep. When I awaken it and start again memory usage is back to it's initial state. But then it will grow again as I use IE8. Seems to happen no matter what websites are visited so I don't think a specific site is causing the problem.

Right now, about ten minutes later, the memory usage is still the same, I killed jdownloader, java and kmplayer , but it still the same. I cant find who is guilty. I post some screens.

.mkv Thumbnail Memory Leak?

May 16, 2011

About a month ago I acquired a large .mkv file. Cutting to the chase, I deduced that when, in explorer, I simply clicked on the folder containing this file, my available memory started to disappear about 10-20MB a second until it was depleted; at which point system performance came to a near halt. I also eventually found out that it was the process explorer.exe that held all of this available memory, EVEN THOUGH the task manager AND resource manager showed that explorer held a steady... 25MB. On my 4GB ram system, after just about a minute, all 2.5 gigs were gone and when the explorer.exe process was ended, all that mystery memory re-appeared.Booting in Safe Mode, clicking on this folder did not produce the same result.Over the next few weeks, I acquired more and more .mkv's. NOT ALL OF THEM create this problem, but about 40% of them do, with the exact same symptoms. I tried disabling thumbnail previewing on individual files AND folder thumbnailing, and it STILL caused this super annoying issue.I can not move these large .MKVs to another hard drive unless I am in safe mode. not acceptable.

BSOD Memory Parity Error Running Windows 7

Mar 22, 2012

I own a Dell XPS M1710 running Windows7 (5 years old). The graphics card has already been replaced once (after 1 year) due to a well know heating problem (made tolerable by cooling pad). I get Blue screen and Memory Parity Error some of the times I start up but mostly it freezes at the black screen point. Memory check gives all clear and I have tried swapping out all of the RAM with (working) modules but still get the same error message. Tried updating the graphics driver, no change. Tried disabling the Graphics device in Device manager and this had a slightly different blue screen but the same basic result.I suspect the graphics card Nvidia Go 7950 GTX because the fault first happened while playing an MP4 file.

Dell Precision 670 Running Windows 7 Won't Boot After Memory Upgrade?

Jan 22, 2010

My Dell Precision 670 will not boot Windows 7 after upgrading the memory to 8GB.Configuration follows:*BIOS A06*2 x 4GB SIMMS in slots 1 and 2. These are correct WS670/4GB PC3200 EEC registered modules as recommended.*memory fan is installed*3 SCSI drives with Adaptec 7901 RAID controller.I've got a dual boot setup, and the system boots and runs fine from the alternate OS (Win XP x64) just fine. The BIOS lists the memory as installed and shows no errors or problems. A memory test indicates that the memory is okay. When I try to do a boot repair from Win7, the Win7 OS is not listed and installing the correct RAID and SCSI drivers from the repair window does not make it visible. The partition is not, in fact, visible from the repair tool. When I put the old memory back in (4 x 512mb SIMMS in slots 1,2,3,4) the system boots and runs fine with Windows 7. What's up with this?

CPU And Memory Running Very High?

Dec 15, 2012

A few days ago, I get this little Windows pop-up on my taskbar saying that my computer is unprotected and has been infected with a trojan (couldn't remember if it said which one exactly but I believe it said Alureon?). Afterward, my computer has been running very slow and the CPU/Memory widget I have pinned on my desktop shows they are pretty much maxed out, all the time, even while not having Internet Explorer or programs open (none that I have knowingly opened myself, anyway). I went out and bought McAfee Anti-Virus 2013 yesterday hoping this would resolve the problem. It did find 10 trojans and removed/quarantined them, but nothing has changed as far as system performance goes; everything still runs slowly, and opening even the smallest of programs like a calculator takes at least a few seconds.

Windows 7 Explorer Hanging Up Memory Like Crazy?

Apr 23, 2012

I'm running: Dell XPS 9100 Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit SP1 16 GB RAM Quad-core Intel 920 @ 2.67 GHz C: drive = 2 TB RAID-0 internal drive set (2 disks) E: drive = 2 TB RAID-0 G-RAID external array attached w/ eSATA (2 disks) Today I had a serious problem with Windows Explorer. I was trying to access a 3.2 GB TIFF file on my external E: array (used for backup, Second Copy is my backup utility) and sorted the directory by Date Modified to find the file.Windows Explorer hung and spun for 45 minutes until I had to power-switch my computer off. Froze up everything. Consumed up to 14 GB of RAM with non-stop page faulting. I even got a black screen trying to start Task Manager to kill the process. The black screen hung, then threw an error msg saying it couldn't open the window and said either press ESC or power-switch the computer. Hitting ESC worked once, but the next time I tried it 10-15 min later I had to power-switch the machine.Windows upon restarting applied some patches during the boot sequence in a place I'd never seen it do that before (while the colorful logo on black background is coming up, before the normal 'Windows is configuring your computer' message on the blue background when it's updating).Lost all my configs - Start Menu, Desktop, Firefox bookmarks, IE favorites, Photoshop actions/recently-edited-files, etc. My files and programs seem ok, though, so far.In Resource Monitor the Windows Explorer window had taken almost 100% of memory, 12 GB of my 16 GB. Photoshop could not even close. It had spun like that on my internal C: drive. But defragging seemed to fix it. On my external drive defragging doesn't help much. Tonight, after defragging my E: external array, I again tried accessing the same directory to work with an updated copy of the same TIFF file. Again I sorted the directory in descending order to sort the file to the top. And I tried to delete another 3 GB file in the same directory. Windows Explorer kept the resources hanging for 20-30 min instead of 45+ minutes. But this time Resource Monitor said Explorer was taking up from 12.9 to 19 GB of memory (on a 16 GB machine). This time Explorer did allow Photoshop to close. But I had to kill the Photoshop.exe process after exiting Photoshop, and some minutes later the memory usage dropped from 19 GB to 98.7 MB.Has anyone seen anything like this? what's going on?My E: drive is external, used for backup, is 75% full and has 240,000 user files on it + whatever system files, Second Copy control files, etc.

Physical Memory Running Very High

Aug 25, 2011

I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit.Ok, so heres my problem. Maybe 3 or 4 days ago my physical memory started running at around 30%-40% (around 1.5gb), and this is at idle and starts happening right at start-up. Normally in past it runs at around 10% (600mb or so). I have noticed it mainly when plaing SW: Force Unleashed and Dawn of War 2. Gameplay runs fine for maybe 3 or 4 seconds then freezes for 10 seconds then is fine again for 3 or 4 seconds and so on. I have tried disabling services, clean boots, virus scans, searched every forum maybe in existance and have found no soloution. I have 4gd DDR3 Ram (2x2gb sticks) and a 3.2ghz Quad Core AMD processor. Also i have noticed that my CPU usage is around 1 or 2% which is rather small isnt it? In my event log, i have been getting multiple errors relating to a bad block in my hard disk. This error repeats about every minute or so.

High CPU And Memory Usage While Running Multimedia

Feb 25, 2012

I have this HP HDX18 laptop for almost 2.5 years now. It came with Vista 64 bit installed which was later upgraded to 7 Home premium. It worked fine until Jan 2012 when it started slowing down to nothing. I got it checked and cleaned by the tech support for HP(pccare247) and also updated the drivers for sound, display and BIOS. Now the system runs fine until any media played whether offline or online. After that it slows down to nothing and the sound becomes crackling and also with a delay and distortion. The system slow down and the crackling sound does not come at the beginning and when it happens the CPU usage reaches 100% and stays above 90% until that multimedia is turned off. Also, the memory usage reaches 2.7 GB out of 8 GB and never comes below 2.16GB. What I noticed is as soon as I turn the WMPlayer off the CPU usage comes down all of a sudden to 15-20% and after sometime stays between 1-5% but the memory usage never comes down from 2.16, that is the minimum.

Explorer.exe Eats Up Memory

Sep 28, 2009

I've been experiencing that explore.exe is eating up my memory, in fact all available memory and thus causing a severe system slowdown.

I've tried to isolate the problem and I found an explanation related with autorun: whenever I have a popup asking me what to do with the files from hard drives with mixed contents, the system begins to scan inside the file structure and start eating up the RAM. Even if you tell the dialog box to do nothing, it will go on with the process, as if it still searches for items, but it doesn't end.

If I kill the explorer.exe process in the task manager and run it again, the problem dissapears.

But I've found that as soon as I change the Autorun options in the control panel and uncheck the main checkbox so it doesn't use autorun for any kind of media, it runs as expected.

I'm using Windows Ultimate x64 RTM (build 7600) downloaded from my TechNet Plus subscription.

I also have Mac HFS+ formatted volumes in my system that are read using Mediafour MacDrive. I'll try to uninstall it and check if the problem continues.

Computer Running Slow Even Though 15 Percent Of Memory Remaining

Explorer Crashes With Added Memory?

I had my original 4 GB still in the computer as I had to remove the other ram to install Windows 7. Once windows was installed I ran it with just the 4 GB for a few days to make sure everything was working which it was. So I then re-installed the remaining 12 GB of ram and then right away windows explorer kept crashing. I removed the 12GB I just put in and reinstalled each stick separately with the original 4 GB so each time there was 8 GB of ram installed with no problems at all.So what gives ???Is there a default setting somewhere that is limiting my memory?
