Resolution Is Not Giving High Resolution

Sep 10, 2011

I have Dell Optiplex GX260 system. I intalled Windows 7 Ultimate on that. The resolution of screen is fine but it is not supporting 1280 x 1024 resolution and videos are not playing properly. It was not taking audio drivers as well but when I ran the SoundMax drivers for XP in compatibility mode they were installed. But display drivers are not getting installed. I even tried the various driver from Nvidia for XP/Vista/Win 7, but none of them works.

Windows 7 Resolution Too High?

Jul 20, 2011

Font was way too small in my webmail. I set resolution at 200 on my little Acer notebook with Windows 7. It made everything bigger except for the email I was trying to enlarge for easier reading.. Now I can't find a way to get back to lower resolution. Control panel is so expanded that the screen will not show needed settings.

Windows 7 Resolution Can't Go As High As Before?

Jun 22, 2011

As I was working my laptop display reset itself to 800x600. I went into resolution to reset it, the highest option is 1024x768, which is still not what it was before. It's like looking at my monitor with the wrong glasses on! t 1900x1200 would be available and that one resolution would be 'recommended' although nothing like that shows on my machine

Age Of Empires II The Conquerors - High Resolution+Music Fix On Windows 7 64bit

Oct 12, 2011

I just got a huge itch to play the Age of Empires series again. I played Age of Mythology last week and worked without a hitch on Windows 7. But when trying to install my all time favorite Age of Empires 2 yesterday, ran into a lot of problems - after hours of googling, I have managed to get the game up and running without the dreaded colour bug and that too at my monitor's resolution of 1680x1050 (vanilla AoE 2 and AoE 2x are limited to 1280x1024) and I managed to get the game to play background music again (more on this below).

So I am compiling a guide so that anyone who wants to install this classic can spare themselves the agony of spending hours to find a solution. The following guide has been compiled using my Age of Empires Collector's edition which I bought some 9 years ago. I can't guarantee this guide will work 100% for other editions/compilations of the game - but I see no reason why it won't work
A. Installing Age of Empires II - The Age of Kings When I tried to install AoE 2, it would keep getting stuck at 50% when copying the file ARIALNB.TTF - so I had to use the following steps to get it to work

1. Insert your Age of Empires II disc. DO NOT run the setup through autoplay. Close autoplay, go to My Computer, right click the AoE 2 CD and Open it.

2. Now right click AOESETUP.EXE and click properties and go to the Compatibility tab

3. In compatibility mode, Select Run this program in compatibility mode for: and in the Drop down menu, select Windows 98 / Windows ME

In Settings, select the following options:

Disable visual themes
Disable desktop composition

In Privilege level, select Run this program as administrator Click apply and then click OK

4. Now, run AOESETUP.EXE as administrator and the setup should complete without a hitch B. Installing Age of Empires II - The Conquerors Expansion

The conquerors setup went smoothly for me - did not need to set it to compatibility mode. If you run into problems, I suggest you use the above method. C. Updating the game and Installing the resolution patch

note: the resolution patch will only work for The Conquerors Expansion and not for the vanilla Age of Kings

1. You can get the 1.0c patch from Microsoft Games. Install it.

2. Now get the resolution patch made by boekabart of [URL] - download the AoE2WideSetup.msi installer

3. Get a No-CD exe for the conquerors expansion -the widescreen patch only works for No-CD exe, spent around an hour trying to get the widescreen patch to work only to find in the readme that it wont work with the original executable because its encrypted or something

4. The readme for the widescreen patch says that it only works when it's installed to the game folder of Age of Empires 2 so when installing the patch, keep that in mind. My installation path for the patch was: J:GamesMicrosoft GamesAge of Empires IIAoE2Wide

5. After installing the patch, you should get a shortcut on your desktop named AoE2Wide. Run it. After it finishes running you should get a .bat file on your desktop named "AoC1.0c 1680x1050.bat" or something.

6. Right click on the .bat file and go to the compatibility tab and select Run this program in compatibility mode for: and in the Drop down menu, select Windows XP (Service Pack 2) and click OK.

7. Now run the .bat file as administrator and keep your fingers crossed!! In game menu, make sure to select 1280x1024 as resolution. If all goes well, the game should be running at your desktop/monitor resolution and the colours bug should vanish. Enjoy!
D. About the Music Bug and Fixing it

This has plagued AoE 2 for a long time now. The Age of Kings and The Conquerors CDs are mixed mode CDs i.e. one part holds the game data and the other part holds the game's BGM in Red Book Audio CD format. Now, old computers (1999-2000's) had no problems with this as they had an audio connector for the CD drive (more info here) and AoE would play the audio track off the CD once you start the game. But since now we use SATA drives, the game wont play BGM anymore.

This always puzzled me as when I got the game I had a Win 98 Pentium 2 PC with a Philips CD drive which had an audio connector and the BGM would play correctly- but when I got my Pentium 4 machine with a Samsung DVD drive with no audio connector, AoE 2 would not play music anymore and it takes a lot out of the game as the music plays a big part in setting the mood of the game.I used to get around this by starting a game in AoE, alt+tab back to windows and then playing the Game CD in Windows Media Player and then alt+tab back into the game. When using the above widescreen patch, my system hangs for a bit when alt tabbing back to windows (I guess it's because the patch suspends explorer.exe in order to prevent the colour bug). So after more searching on google and experimenting, I found another method here developed by TheMegaX2 and FrozenWolf150 Quote:

1. Use Windows Media Player to rip the soundtracks from the game CD's. I did this with both the AOK and AOC soundtracks. WMP will usually create .wma files.

2. Rename them to something recognizable, like AOK Track.wma, since the default name for both is 01 Track 1.wma.

3. Use a free audio converter, to convert them to .mp3 format.

4. Copy them to the Taunt folder.

5. Assign them numbers like you would for custom taunt files. I named them 50 AOK Track.mp3, and 51 AOC Track.mp3.

6. When you start the game, now you can choose between the AOK and AOC soundtracks, based which you prefer. Just press enter and type 50 for Age of kings BGM, and 51 for The Conquerors BGM and press enter again.

Resolution Too High For Screen

Jan 16, 2009

I have installed Windows 7 beta. Previously I was using Windows Vista Ultimate. The Graphics is an AMD X1200 and is plugged in to a LG plasma screen using the hdmi interface. When the installation of windows 7 reboots the resolution automatically sets itself to 1960 x 1080 hd resolution although my screen doesn't seem to handle the resolution. It is meant to be able to take a 1080p input and scale it to 720p but in this case i get a blank screen with 'out of range' displayed.

Previously I had the resolution set to 1360 x 768 on Vista. I can plug in a second monitor which extends the desktop to it and then I can change the resolution in the settings for the TV to 1360 X 768 and the TV displays fine, but it seems to store these settings as a multi monitor profile and as soon as the second monitor is removed the single screen reverts to the 1080p resolution.

I also searched through the registry for xresolution and changed any references to 1960 X 1080 to 1360 X 768 but it still set a 1080 resolution on reboot. These settings must be stored somewhere so if anyone knows how i can change them with another monitor plugged in that would be great then i change back to my TV and it will load with a 1360 X 768 resolution.

Can't Play A High-resolution Game For More Than An Hour Or Two

Nov 18, 2011

I have been having the worst time with my custom built PC since it was built. I am getting random BSOD's here and there, but there does seem to be a correlation between a greater occurence when playing games. Often I can't play a high-resolution game for more than an hour or two before I crash.I heard a recommendation to try Prime95, and I get an insta-BSOD when doing the Blend test.I unfortunately am under the suspicion that this is a CPU hardware error and the CPU will have to be replaced, but I do need some form of help or confirmation before I take the next step RMA'ing it. Unable To Set High Resolution On Generic Monitor

Jan 12, 2013

I've built myself a PC and run into some problems with the display resolution.

OS: Win 7 x64
Graphics Card: XFX/ATI Radeon HD 4550 512MB PCI-E 2.0 VGA/HDMI/Dual-Link DV
Monitor: Hanns G HZ194

Display Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 4550
Monitor: Generic PnP Monitor

Current Resolution (I guess) is 1024x768 although the settings show that I have selected the recommended 1366x768. Everything is moderately big and chunky - not safe mode though. Is that the Generic Monitor is causing the problem. How I can get a sensible resolution. It's causing me some big problems as some of my applications don't fit on the screen properly and don't have effective resize/scroll bars.

Windows 7 Sp1 High Cpu Usage (35%) High System Interupts

I just installed windows 7 ultimate sp1 - Like the title says I'm seeing 35% cpu usage with nothing going on. I googled around and ran traces to see which driver it was, turned out the ahci driver was doing it. The USB driver showed similarly high latency but that can be delt with later. Most forums recommend upgrading your drivers but this problem has stayed constant both with microsoft's stock drivers for everything and after running windows built in search for drivers even after I manually grabbed the latest drivers for everything. url...BIOS is up to date4 GB RAM - Corsair something or otherEVGA Geforce 8800 GT450W psu1 DVD burner (sata)5 hard drives (sata) plugged into all but the first sata port because that caused nothing but headaches for me. Update - switching from AHCI to IDE in BIOS fixed the problem.

High Ping In FPS After Upgrading To Windows 7 From XP

Jun 12, 2011

so yesterday at a lan party we decided to upgrade my mates ancient PC to Windows 7 from XP and the computer should have the specs for it and Windows 7 itself was/is running smooth. The first time I put up Windows Home Premium and installed the normal programs. I installed steam and downloaded Counter-Strike, and told my m8 to go play on a local server. And his ping going crazy. My MS is about 10-20 on a local server, but his jumps from 50-200ms, which is unbearable. Well after that we decided to back XP and went off to play, and now it was working perfectly. And the day after we put up a new Windows 7 Ultimate 86x. And again the same problem persists.

High CPU Usage After Reinstall Of Windows 7 OS

Aug 7, 2011

I reinstalled my OS (win 7 x64 ultimate). After that I launched my favourite game (lineage 2) and when I logged in game i experienced some freezes and lags, so I looked to task manager and I saw that l2.exe process eats like 40% of cpu per on window, my cpu isn't strong, but before reinstall it ate like 8% of cpu. Whats causing that game started to eat like 5x more cpu then before reinstall? I thought it can be caused by some drivers which might be installed with some other games in past.

Specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5400+ Black Edition
Gigabyte GA-MA770-UD3 (rev. 1.0)
Gigabyte ATI Radeon HD 4670 512MB DDR3 GV-R467D3-512I

Screen Resolution In Windows 7?

May 15, 2011

My OS is Windows 7 32-bit. I'm using 2 monitors. The first one is from my laptop, Thinkpad T400 which has a resolution of 1440 x 900 pixels. The second one is a 18.5-inch LCD (G900HD from BENQ), which has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels.

I need to use both of them at the same time (to view more windows simultaneously). We all know that this is possible if we choose the right option in "Control PanelAppearance and PersonalizationDisplayScreen Resolution".

My problem is that I cannot choose the right setting for my second resolution, because its native resolution (1366 x 768) does not appear in the suggested list, as you can see from the below picture:

As a result, text and images displayed in my second monitor seem to be blurry. So my question is how to set my second monitor's resolution back to its original state?

Screen Resolution Different In Windows And 7MC?

Feb 2, 2012

I am confused by the screen resolution of my Windows 7 Media Centre PC. I'm running Win 7 Pro with a 16:9 widescreen monitor which claims to have a native resolution of 1366 x 768. I've never been able to set that in Windows or the video driver.7MC has the monitor set to 1024 x 768 (4:3) but nevertheless shows a fullscreen image with a 16:9 aspect ratio and works perfectly. When I first installed Win 7 the desktop was also set to 1024 x 768 but the image was stretched horizontally so that it filled the widescreen but was horribly distorted.I discovered that setting the Windows desktop to 1148 x 648 (16:9) almost fills the whole display, just leaving thin black lines on either side and filling it vertically. As this is the correct aspect ratio I was happy to live with the slight reduction in size. 7MC is unaffected and continues using the whole screen at, presumably, some secret alternative to 1024 x 768.Since the 648 vertical resolution is being stretched to 768 to occupy the full height of the monitor I presume the 1148 horizontal resolution is being stretched by the same factor. This would make the horizontal resolution 1361, very close to the 1366 x 768 the monitor wants.

I took screenshots of both the MCE screen and the Windows desktop, expecting that the image dimensions would be related to one of the preceding resolutions. However, they are both 1952 x 648, with the actual screen image in the left hand 1148 x 648 area and an empty desktop section to the right. This makes no sense to me whatsoever. Somewhere and somehow there's a lot of rescaling or cropping of the monitor image and I'd love to know what's going on. I need to know this because I'm trying to set TunerfreeMCE up and want to tell it the screen coordinates of various buttons on a flash catchup service for a particular channel so it can trigger play etc. I just don't know which coordinate set to use!The display adapter is a Radeon 9600...did I mention this was old? I had exactly the same problems with Vista previously, have just upgraded and would like finally to get it right.

Windows 7 Constantly Crashing On High End System?

Dec 3, 2012

I have just built a "Dream Machine" for the purpose of graphic design, and other intensive activities (though not gaming, as this is a work PC!).I won't go into all of the specifications, however the PC does use a Gigabyte X79-UP4 motherboard, and I have 16 Gigs of Patriot Viper Extreme (PC 17000) memory installed. Initial FSB / RAM results are shown below:I also installed 2 x Samsung 830 SSDs in RAID 0!The hard drive transfer rates are truly out of this world -The read speed is close to 1 Gbps...almost made it!!!Now that I have built an impressive PC I am having trouble making it behave, it is a bit like a wild stallion, full of raw power, but quite frankly untamed!Windows 7 (x64) is constantly crashing, it crashes about every 20 minutes, and it doesn't seem to matter whether the PC is doing work or not.

I have setup the RAM to use an Xtreme Memory Profile, which runs at 2133 MHz, which is not an issue for my RAM (as this is the RAMs) natural running speed.*** At any rate I plan to test the RAM for a good 48 hours using MemTest to see if there are any issues on this front ***I am thinking that there may be a conflict between the motherboards RAID chipset and the SSDs, in so far as perhaps the motherboard can't keep up with the SSDs.
