Windows 7 Doesn't Find P&P External Hdds
Nov 18, 2011
It is occurring on my Dell Studio XP - running Win7 Pro. Intel® Coreā¢ i5 CPU 650 @ 3.20GHz.
I'm trying to back up to ext hdd. But however I connect one, I mean to whichever usb port, win explorer fails to pick it up. Although the machine does play a sound so I would have thought it would be recognising it at some level.
The problem is not the hdd. I've tried with two different hdds both of which work with other desktops.
This morning I tried the troubleshooter from Control Panel. Result (copied from troubleshooting report) was as follows:
Issues found Hardware changes might not have been detectedHardware changes might not have been detected Detected Scan for recent hardware changes Completed
Potential issues that were checked Windows Update configured to never install driversWindows Update configured to never install drivers Driver updates aren't automatically installed when detected by Windows Update. Issue not present

I was given two External usb HDDs both 80gb each, my friend said they were totally unusable on his laptops they were corrupted but using them on my laptop I successfully formatted and am using them as we speak.
I'm just concerned with whether or not I will lose all i've backed up onto these External HDDs because of them not working on my friend's laptops but working perfectly fine on mine!

I have been using my WD External Hard Drive in my new Windows 7 desktop. Everything was working fine until this morning, my external HD stopped responding. Everytime I connect external HD to my desktop, I get " You need to format the disk H: before you can use it".
I've tried changing the drive name as well but with no success.

I have a seagate 2 TB external HDD. It has 1 FAT32 partition. Everything works as expected in Windows Vista/7 and even in Ubuntu. When connecting the external HDD to any XP machine (tested 3 computers with XP), the device will not show up under My Computer. It is visible in Device Manager.Under Disk Management, the drive shows up without any labelling and has improper file system and partitioning. It's as though the partition table is messed up, however, the drive works perfectly on any Vista/Windows 7/Linux pc. [code] Not only is the capacity incorrect, but darn well everything else about the drive shows up incorrect under Disk Management. This happens with all XP PCs. Also, I ran a SFC /SCANNOW with one XP machine in the event the FAT32 drivers or DLLs were corrupted and no resolve.I reinstalled XP on the same machine and the results were identical.

I have two dictionary files on my hard drive, both in Cuserskathyapplication data oamingmicrosoftproof folder. Custom.dic and kathy.dic. I can only get search to find these by doing a custom search. Even then it finds these files everywhere BUT my C drive first, finally finding them on my C drive last. It goes through several mapped network drives and my external drive first and then finally shows these files last. How can I get these indexed so they just show up on a normal search where I press the windows key and type "custom.dic"? Second question is why aren't they found in the first place? Are dictionary files something special like system files that aren't normally searched for?

I'll start out by saying that I don't like Windows 7 search. I liked "Search for files named . . ." or "Search for files containing text .but as usual no one asked me.My problem is one that I've had since I upgraded to Win 7. I have my user folders on E: and I set a junction to point C:UsersBarnabas to E:UsersBarnabas. Pretty simple. If I reference C:UsersBarnabasxyx.doc the file E:UsersBarnabasxyx.doc opens. Way cool. The problem is that for some reason this confused Windows search.Let's say I open up my desktop user folder and select Documents. I know that I have a file called Dogs.doc but I don't remember which folder it is in. So I put Dogs.doc into "Search" and hit go. No files found. However, if I open "My Computer" and navigate to E:SystemUsersBaranbas and do the same search, the file is found.Does anyone know of a fix for this problem. I know that I can use another search tool like FileSearchEX but MS was nice enough to put that Search box on nearly every window, I feel like I should take advantage of it.

I had a computer with Windows Vista, which was developing some problems, so I bought a new machine, which runs Windows 7 and Windows Media Player 12. I used EasyTransfer to transfer files to the new machine, and the music files are there -- I can see them in Windows Explorer. But WMP is only aware of some of the files. If I double-click a music file in Explorer, WMP will play it, and then it will show up in the library, but I have so many music files that double-clicking, and playing, every single one is not a great option. How do I get WMP to recognize all the files?

I search for a word: episodic. The results are only 1 word document which has a question: What is episodic.
The Windows 7 search does not find my 2nd word document which has the answer: Episodic is... nor does Windows 7 search find other powerpoint lectures and presentations including the definition of the word episodic?

My External USB Hard Drive doesn't show up in My Computer Win 7 64bit.
I've just received my Western Element 2,5Tb today. When I first plugged it in, it worked normally. But due to my over-excitement, I copied too much files at the same time and it wasn't working anymore. I regretted doing this immediately.
I have searched on the internet to find some solutions but all of them didn't work. I've checked the Computer Management, Disk Management, but nothing about my External HD showed up. In the notification area, my laptop still detected it and I can removed it properly [even though i can't use it at all].
I tried to connect to my USB and another Samsung 500Gb HDD. And it worked perfectly fine. Then, I tried to connect my new HDD to my sister's lap [she is using Window Vista] and it worked perfectly fine too.

I have an Acer Aspire 5741-5979 using a graphics card of Intel (R) graphics. This is a new issue I have had recently. I used to connect an external monitor to my laptop, and it worked fine. The issue is that the laptop still detects the external monitor but the external monitor does not receive a signal when I plug it in the VGA (blue trapezoid connector) have played around with the display options an exhausting amount of times and nothing works there. I tried what worked before (extending the display) and trying to clone it. I thought it might be a driver issue and I reinstalled the driver, but this didn't seem to help either. I have used many monitors when it worked, and also tried different monitors after it stopped working to no avail

I recently noticed an issue when trying to connect to external hard drives. Initially noted that it wasn't showing in 'my computer' and so assumed I had driver issues and sought to update them from Dell's site. After doing so there was still no change, but noted that It was appearing in 'device manager'.I even tried updating the USB hubs from the Device Manager, and it states that they are all up-to-date with the correct drivers. Both external hard drives that i have tried has worked on other PC's so i assume that mine is the issue.

I've googled this and found heaps of people having the same issue, but nothing that actually resolves it. I'm using a laptop with internal wifi but I also have an external wifi dongle as I connect to my neighbours internet (I have permission and the passwords, etc). Both the internal and external used to work fine and both would have internet connection. But something recently has changed and now the internal wifi still works with both network and internet connection, but the external one only has network connection and no internet connection. The reason I use the external one is it gives much better signal strength than the internal one and, as said, both used to work just fine. Now I've tried uninstalling the external drivers and dongle and reinstalling it but no dice. I've tried doing the netsh stuff people have recommended in some of the search pages but no dice. Tried release and renew of IP, but no dice. I've disabled all firewalls but no dice (and I figure the firewalls would stop both connections anyway but I thought I'd try it

I connect an external device that supports USB3.0 to an USB3.0 port on the computer/mother board using an USB 3.0 cable. I can see in the device manager that there are (intel) drivers that support USB3.0. The external device (WD mypassport) advertises USB 3.0 support. Is there a way to find out in windows 7 (home premium) if the actual usb connection is really using USB3.0 or if it is falling back into USB2? Is the transmission speed in the USB connection the only hint about what is happening in the USB connection. That is, a higher speed means that USB 3.0 is really being used?

I installed Windows 7 on a 20GB partition on a 2TB HDD for my PC on a AMD E-350 APU motherboard.
1) Can I use the other partition that doesn't have Windows 7 installed and RAID it with another empty HDD?
2) Will I be able to add another HDD down the road and add it to the RAID without erasing all my data without using a RAID Manager like Intel Rapid Storage?
If Yes: How can I do this?
If No: Is there a RAID Manager that I can use that will allow me to do this?

I recently had Windows 7 Pro installed onto my 80GB HDD. This was the only HDD plugged in when the installation too place.
Now, when I plug in either of my other internal HDDs, windows will not detect either. I have tried different jumper and IDE cable settings but it will not detect either of the other hard drives.
Also, while im thinking about it, what is the best way to set up in terms of HDDS and IDE cables and jumpers?
I guess windows 7 should be plugged into IDE 1 Primary Does it matter if i used IDE 1 secondary or IDE 2 primary/secdondary for disc drives and other internal hard drives? Should I have my windows HDD jumper set to 'master with slave' and any other HDD(s) set to 'slave'?

I want to combine my 2 desktops into one, since I never use both together and the older one is very dated by now (think Time/tiny computers old). My current machine is an Asus P5Q-E with a C2D and has one HDD on a SATA connection running windows 7 64bit. The old computer is a single core Athlon 2700+ thing with a pair of hard drives on a single IDE ribbon. What I want to do is put the hard drives from the old machine into the newer and be able to choose between Windows XP already installed on the old master IDE hard drive and Windows 7 on the newer SATA drive (I've only kept the old computer to run XP for compatibility), all the while keeping the old slave IDE drive as a slave.

I would like to remove Vista from my dual boot setup. Here is how I got to where I am now.
I had Vista installed on my PC hard drive (was C. Later, I decided to install Windows 7 HP on a new and seperate HDD. I unplugged the Vista HDD and added the new HDD and installed Windows 7 as if from scratch (I was worried that the install would mess up all my files on Vista). After the Windows 7 was up and running, I then reconnected Vista redesignated it as drive E: and after some searching on how to, I created the dual boot using my Windows 7 disk so I'm assuming the boot file in on drive C: along with Windows 7.
I now want delete the dual boot and Vista so I can use the drive as a backup drive or possibly Win8. I have found several methods to do this but none that really have my specific situation.

I reimaged my computer because I was having a whole bunch of trubble with it (no of which really matter now). After reimaging I tried to access some of the files I saved on my external hard drive, but no matter what I tried I could not get access to the files. The drive appears in device Manager and in the USB Device pages, and I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drive. But for some reason I just can't access the device.

All PSU SATA power cables I've seen have only four connectors on each cable. Assuming the rail can handle the load and the wire used is large enough to avoid a voltage drop, is there any reason why there can't be more than four HDDs on a cable?
What I am wanting to do is run an SSD (boot/program) and six data drives (probably 2 TB WD Greens) on a single cable that I can make up (the PSU is a modular Corsair HX750; a bit oversized but that will cut down on heat and, hopefully, increase the life of the PSU) to cut down on cable clutter (the case I want to use is a bit tight; space to put it is a problem so it needs to be small). The original cables are made with 18 AWG wire. By using #14 AWG wire, the calculated voltage drop at the last HDD in the string (the SDD would be first) will actually be less than on the Corsair cable. The computer would read or write to no more than two of the HDDs (and the SDD) at any one time. There will also be two hot swap bays (3.5" and 2.5") in the computer (for making back ups) as well as an optical drive but each one of those three will get their own cable.
