Windows 7 Clients Can't See/connect/share With Windows XP Systems

Dec 22, 2011

have a network[s] that is almost all wireless with 2 windows 7 clients [ultimate x64 and home premium x64] and two, sometimes 3 windows xp systems, a vista system, phones, etc. Something changed recently and resulted in the Windows 7 Ultimate system losing visibility to the main win xpp system.

- previously, I could share files between those two, mainly through the 'shared' and 'public' folders. Now I cannot pickup the XPP systems at all from either Windows 7 System.

- The only significant change I can think of is that I added a Windows 7 Home Premium system to the mix, 'joining' the Homegroup that had already been established on the Ulitmate rig. I did not setup any new Homegroup via the Home Premium notebook.

- Another thing that puzzles me: the Ultimate system identifies its network connection by the name of the Windows XPP established network - Mshome2. The notebook identifies the same network by the Wireless AP name. I'm wondering if that amounts to the "same" network as Windows 7 identifies such, or to those systems are these indeed two 'different' networks, howbeit operated by the same routers?

- The two Windows 7 systems can see/access one another. I turned 'On' Media streaming and Media sharing on both of the Windows 7 systems.

- From the XPP systems I can pickup the Windows 7 Ultimate rig but I have not setup a separate Login for it.

- From the XPP systems I do not see the Windows 7 Home Premium system at all. The XPP systems are networked by the same Wireless AP as the Windows 7 system.

Windows 7 Clients Attached To SBS 2003 Slow Bootup/login/browsing; XP Clients OK

May 1, 2012

I'm assisting a client that is running a fully patched SBS 2003. 5 computers on domain; 2 are XP, 3 are windows 7 professional 32-bit.

All 3 Win7 PCs are new HP 6200 SFF, fully patched.

The Windows 7 PCs take a long time to boot up.. it's 3 minutes before the login screen comes up, and after authentication its 2 more minutes before the desktop is up. Once logged on, local network browsing is very slow as well (30 seconds to open a small, 1 page PDF for example, from a local network resource). Network is 100MB, so no gigabit, but ping/throughput to the outside world is fine. Files download quickly, external sites come up instantly, the problem is only when booting up, loading the profile, and browsing intranet.

Making this more interesting is the fact that if the PCs are removed from the domain but still physically attached to network, it boots up instantly, logs in instantly, and browswing local network resources (after authenticating to them of course) is instantaneous.

There may be one more more causes, I accept that... I've combed the event log and see some group policy (errors 1501/1502) events that may indicate delay, but they don't show up every time. Also, that wouldn't explain the slow browsing of network resources.

I've done some research (read: googling) and not finding any specific incompatibilities between SBS 2003 and Win7. Could this be a kerberos issue, and if so, how would they resolve it? I believe I've demonstrated it's not a hardware issue since performance is fine if they are off domain, so it seems like it's a delay processing something on startup and then delays while accessing resources on the network that are relying on cached credentials.

Can't Connect To Samba Share Via Name; Ip Works

Apr 30, 2009

I'm unable to connect to a samba share on a FreeBSD (via FreeNAS) box when using the machine name.

The message it gives me is "The account is not authorized to log in from this station".

The share is in anonymous mode; there's on restrictions.

If I try to connect to the same share via it's IP, things work.

Connecting via name worked previously on this same machine from XP and after I first installed Windows 7.

I can also connect to it via a Popcorn Hour machine.

Any ideas?

Use Homegroups To Connect Two Computers To Share Files?

Nov 4, 2012

I'm using a desktop running Windows 7 (soon to be 8) Ultimate. My target computer is a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium.

If I download a file, is it possible for me to set a download destination directly to the laptop if I initiate the download from the desktop? The computers will be on the same network and part of a Homegroup (if that matters). I'd like to create a folder on the desktop screen of the laptop, and have the files end up there.

Alternatively, I suppose I could have the file download to the desktop computer, and then I could wirelessly transfer it over via the Homegroups, but moving 1-2GB files would probably suck bandwidth and increase system resources on my end.

EDIT: Is this also possible with a second desktop computer as well? (One primary client, and two satellite computers).

Can't Connect To Remote Linux Server To Create Network Share

Mar 28, 2011

I have a hosted Linux server running CentOS 5 with Samba 3.4. Everything is setup and it is accessible via Linux machines by typing [URL] in a Firefox address bar. I am trying to set up a local network share on a Windows 7 Home Premium x64 SP1 computer. I have tried entering the IP address in 2 locations:1. Map Network drive. I select a drive letter and type in the ip \12.345.678.9 It asks for credentials and I enter the user info for the user I created on the Linux machine. It thinks a moment then pops back up asking for credentials. It doesn't say they are invalid, just never goes through.2. Connect to a website (under Map Network Drive). I type the IP [URL] and click connect and it pops up a dialog saying "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another".

I have tried creating a loopback adapter and trying to setup a connection via SSH using the guide found at [URL]. After completing the tutorial (substituting my server IP address for the destination address given) I try using the Run dialog as indicated and get a "Windows cannot connect to.." error and the diagnose connection button. One thing that may be causing problems there is that the loopback adapter is labeled as an unidentified network and thus stuck as a public connection, and I am unable to change it. Searching for solutions to that brings up things I can't access (no group policy editor on Home Premium) or results in no change (setting DHCP server, which I tried setting to my router).

Laptop Taking A Long Time To Connect To Network Share?

Nov 16, 2011

For some reason my laptop takes forever to connect to a shared drive on my desktop on my home network. I've tried connecting to it by mapping the drive and through windows explorer and same thing. Sometimes it won't even connect at all. I don't have this issue with other computers on the network. And when I say a long time I am meaning like 5 minutes or more. At first it was maybe only 1-2 minutes but it is getting worse. My mouse icon has had the spinning ring around it trying to connect the whole time I have been writing this. Both computers are Win 7 pro x64 with sp1. Desktop is wired directly to the router and laptop has excellent signal strength. Both have DHCP reservations set in the router. The way I usually connect is by starting a run box and typing \[desktop pc name][share] then it just spins

Windows 7 Clients Intermittently Unable To Resolve Host Name Of Server

Feb 20, 2012

We have 2 x Server 2008 R2 domain controllers and 120+ Windows 7 x64 clients. We have a print server which runs Server 2008 R2.We have several other servers which also run Server 2008 R2. An issue occurs intermittently and apparently at random, whereby a client will be unable to resolve the host/computer name of the print server. When the issue occurs, we have confirmed the following: - The client has a valid IP address. The client DNS server addresses are correct. - The client can ping the IP address of the print server. - The client can resolve the IP address of the print server by using nslookup and the servers FQDN. - The client cannot resolve the IP address of the print server by using nslookup and the host/computer name of the print server. The issue can occur regardless of which domain controller the client used to log on. - When the output of ipconfig /display is printed to a text file, many of the other servers in our domain are present in the DNS cache but the print server is not. After the ipconfig /flushdns command is executed, the client can resolve the host/computer name of the print server immediately.

Collect Action Center & Reliability Monitor Events From Windows 7 Clients?

Feb 9, 2012

Is it possible to use Server 2008 R2, a Windows 7 workstation, or some software to collect the events logged in the Action Center on our Windows 7 clients? Also, is it possible to collect the events logged in the Reliability Monitor (View reliability history) from our Windows 7 clients.I am interested in aggregating this information in a central location i.e. on a server/workstation, which our administrators have access to. Is this possible when using System Center Configuration Manager? A smaller scale solution would be preferred as we only have around 120 clients.

How To View PDF Thumbnails In Windows 7 32-bit Systems

May 15, 2011

I've spent the last couple of days trying desperately to resolve this issue. I have looked everywhere but cannot find an answer... PROBLEM: I have thousands of PDFs in hundreds of folders. When I go to a particular folder, I use the slider to change the Explorer views from "Content" to "Extra Large Icons" but cannot get a thumbnail preview of the PDFs - all I see is an Acrobat Icon preview.I know that this is an issue on the X64-bit verson of Windows 7, but I'm running 32-bit Windows 7 (Ultimate)! ATTEMPTS: I've tried several ways to resolve this but nothing worked so far. Specifically, I: 1. Made sure that the File Type Associations are correct.2.Unchecked Folder options>View>"Always show icons, never thumbnails".3. Made sure that Folder options>View> "Display file icon on thumbnails" is checked.4.Made sure that Performance>Settings>"Show thumbnails instead of icons" is checked.5. Tried the simple method suggessted at other forums: going into Adobe and opening the directory to preview the files as thumbnails from there and then refreshing the folder in Windows Explorer to display a thumbnail preview of the PDF file - Didn't work either!6. Ran "Repair Acrobat Installation".7. Uninstalled and Reinstalled Acrobat 9 (including associated registry files).8. Installed the latest version of Reader.9. Tried installing other software (PDF-XChange and Foxit) but these don't create PDF thumbnails in Windows Explorer either.

Multiple Users On Multiple Windows 7-64bit Systems?

Feb 13, 2013

We have three medical clinics and the front desk staff float from clinic to clinic depending on their schedule. I only started here a few months ago and I am working on upgrading their Dell xp systems to Windows 7 systems. The problem begins to crop up when say a user named Sally will come in and sit down at this system for the first time.. Well, she needs to login, click on outlook icon, let it find her exchange PST and copy settings to her user profile, then she launches the application for the scanner that she uses to scan in ID's and insurance cards for every patient coming in.. The scanner is set to default settings and needs to be tweaked on color depth and double sided, etc.. Then after that, she needs to launch her Medical EMR application.. and then choose various options in the citrix client, ..TL;DR - Each user needs to spend 20 minutes resetting the defaults at this updated system.
Well this is fine except, I am planning on updating 2 front desk systems at each clinic, the user Sally will need to do all these things EACH time she finds herself sitting down at a system I just swapped out the previous evening. My thought is this, put a single system down in one clinic and let it sit a week giving most of the float users a chance to work on it for a day, setting all of their preferences etc.Once I get a bunch of them with user profiles on the local drive, grab an image of that drive and just deploy that to each system I roll out..Couple issues I am running into:First would be that I would have to register each Windows 7 copy with a new serial, which I have The next issue is, we have a mis-mash of Dell optiplex systems. 330's - 380's even a couple 320's..
