Windows 7 Ultimate X64 As Thin Client Server?
Mar 22, 2011
its possible to use windows 7 Ultimate as a Server for thin client? I'll be using nc600 as my client terminal. The box says it supports windows 7. Is there any additional software I need to install on windows 7 server machine before I can use the client terminal?

i have following problem. At work we have HP proliant ml350 server with windows server 2008 on it, 3x windows 7 client and 25x win xp sp2 clients. Network doesn't work, clients cant see each other, can't see server and server can't see them in network and sharing center. What could be a problem? Is ipv6 protokol on windows 7 obstructing a server or something else?

I am having an issue with offline files created offline syncing back to the server. I have set up a network share to be available offline on a client computer. All files are available offline without issue. Here is the issue however. If I set the folder to work offline any file I create in the folder when it is offline just disappears when the folder comes back online, there are no conflicts or sync failures reported in sync center. If I create a new folder offline the folder does sync back to the server. Any changes made to an existing file are also replicated back to the server once the share is back online. So the issue is only with newly created files when the share is offline. I have not been able to replicate this error on any other file server in our environment, However I have recreated the issue with multiple shares with multiple Win 7 clients on this file server.
Steps taken so far.
- Checked and reset permission levels on the share.
- Recreated new shares from scratch for testing.
- Disabled and enabled offline files on the client computer and cleared the offline cache.
- Check various registry entry settings.
- Disabled cashing on the File server.
- Tested with XP the issue does not exist with XP.
The clients are running Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. The File server is Server 2003 Standard 32 bit with SP2.

I have to quick here but I had an 'old' computer hanging around my house.
Atom Processor
512MB RAM
an ASUS EEE PC.
I installed Windows Thin PC on it, a more 'compact' version of Windows 7. All the drivers automatically installed but the VGA driver doesn't work.Basicly when I [Right Click -> Screen Resolution] the box with the resolutions is grey and stuck to 800x600.I know it can do 1024x768 'cause it did so on XP but I had battery/ACPI issues. So I moved to Windows Thin PC.I have tried a number of registry hacks but nothing works...
PS: Its an Asus Eee PC 900

My problem is windows 7 hangs and freeze when access 2003 server Enterprise edition. This is not a small network, one of the biggest network.i have doubt on individual users on domain. before 2 months we had department wise users mean, for example Accounts@domainname.local. But after we created the individual users like john@domainname.local to all users. this is i believe the cause of problem. When we acess the server via the software it freezed for 5 seconds and then repeat to normal state. And after some time it hangs for 2 minutes.

I've got Windows 7 Ultimate that I would like to install on the below machine.I've been picking up old super micro server parts and I want to put them together to build an old school workstation.I've got the Super micro P4QH8 motherboard sitting in a Super micro 8042-8 chassis. The system is based on a Server works GC-HE chipset and has the 400Hz system bus and 6x64bit PCI-X slots (3.3v) and one zero channel RAID expansion slot to compliment the on board Ultra 320 SCSI.I have 8GB of DDR266/200 memory and a pair of 2.8GHz Zeon MPs (have 4 but Windows 7 only recognizes 2 physical processors). I also have a Matrox Parhelia DL 256 (or 512 can't remember?) in 64bit to occupy one PCI-X slot. The chassis includes an older CD ROM and a floppy drive.I have the BIOS ready to go on a floppy if I need it, but after that I may be in trouble Windows 7 system requirements state that a DVD drive is required for installation. Is that true or do they really mean a CDROM capable drive (knowing any DVD inherently handles CDs)? The P4QH8 system board has dual EIDE channels and two early USB ports (2.0?) at the back.
Am I going to have to get hold of a DVD drive to get this thing to boot from the Windows 7 installation disk? I assume that a DVD drive will need to have some drivers (that I don't have or will not be able to install on an empty system). How can I get the thing to boot from a DVD without drivers, or can I? I recall being able to set the BIOS to boot from a CD in the past but I am not sure about a DVD. Could it be as simple as getting hold of a cheap DVD drive and plugging it into the on board controller and setting the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive? One other question - (assuming I find a way to boot up) which do I install, Windows 7 in 32bit or 64bit? The processors are 32bit but the memory bus and data bus are 64bit on this machine. To recognize the full 8GB of available memory the 64bit would make sense(?) but I don't know for sure.I do not want to have to install an earlier version of window from CD only to get a DVD drive up and running to install from.

Have been a LONG LONG user of Linux as a server (hosting VM's XP / Windows 7 mix) and file / print sharing.
I used to avoid MS like the plague as far as SERVER environments are concerned - probably because my first experince was Windows NT (Windows NeanderThal or Windows No Thanks) which was SO HORRIBLE that it put me off Windows servers for ages.
(Note I'm using a server in a HOME environment where we have around 8 machines (most of which are actually mine for testing -- not a corporate environment which has other considerations).
The problem now with the latest Linux distros that they are trying to be "A Better Windows than Windows". You can of course customize them but I haven't got the time or patience to do this any more. To select what packages to install / leave out now is a 100% pain and if you do it wrong the chances are the system will give errors.
I've looked at the new SUSE 11.2 -- slick and polished - bit I don't NEED "an alternative Windows".
I've just been looking at Windows Server 2008 R2 (got it from Technet) and I'm REALLY IMPRESSED with it so far. I've installed the STANDARD version - you don't need datacenter or Enterprise version for a home server.
It runs vmware server on it just fine (although I might go the whole hog and use the Hyper-V virtualisation -- need to do a bit more research).
I'm quite happy letting MS do the updates than having to mess around with Kernel compiles etc.
Incidentally as a HOME server there are some considerations that you might want to do to make it more like a Desktop OS than a pure server for example add multi-media to it.
This guy does a great job at this .
Convert your Windows Server 2008 R2 to a Workstation! - Multiboot Installation
Windows 7 VM's run just fine on W2008 server (they should as there is a lot of common code).

I bought the full retail Win 7 Ultimate and trying to upgrade Windows Vista Ultimate to Win 7 Ultimate, both 32bit. I get to the Expanding Windows files to 21% and nothing. The program is still running and stuck at 21% but after waiting 3 hours I shut power off and Vista was reinstated. Why can't I get past 21% Expanding Windows files? I want to use the upgrade because I have a ton of programs on my Vista and don't want to spend days reinstalling them.

i run an SSL site that has function perfectly for over 10 years. Now that clients are using Windows 7 SOME of them cannot log in because their LOCAL domain name is part of the USERNAME . LOCALDOMANUSERNAME . they cannot change it .they cannot use the User another account setting after using it 1 time.I have had them remove the autocomplete option under tools, content, ssl, username/password.i have had them clear the SSL state. It seems to only happen with Windows 7 pro when they have their own domain set up at their office.
