Windows 7 Freeze And Nothing Responds
Nov 2, 2012
my windows 7 seems to completely freeze up every thing was working fine until just recently. the mouse is moveable but nothing responds, and goes not responding. i ran memtest on my ram and came up with some errors so proceed to test each stick on its own the first came up with errors the other 3 did not. I retested the first stick and it has gone through like 7 passes now and no errors this time. so i am lost as to what to do now. when testing the sticks separately they were all tested in the same port. could it be my hard drive dieing? or maybe the mother board or cpu?

I have a large number of mp3's that have been recorded over the years. In XP, I wanted to give each mp3 a specific 'original recording date'. I used the 'year' field and gave it a date in this format. 2007/05/22. I could then sort properly. In Windows 7, however, when I add 'year' column to the properties and look at the same files, I only see 2007, not the full date. When I try to edit the 'year' field, Windows responds with 'unacceptable character', probably referring to theI can do without the / (20070522), but I do need the full date, not just the year.

I built a new PC this past summer (specs are in my info). During the initial setup and installation of windows it locked up on me, but after a couple of tries, Windows 7 Ultimate x64 was properly installed. Since that point my computer locks up relatively frequently. When it locks up nothing responds...mouse and keyboard are useless, the last 16th of a second of sound is repeated, and the network itself actually locks up (no other computers on the network can access each other or the internet). The computer locks under the least demanding situations. I can play Skyrim for hours with the graphic settings set to max and it doesn't freeze. Meanwhile I play Dungeons of Dredmor or some fairly basic flash games, and within a half hour my computer will lock up.
I have run Memtest for 48 hours resulting in 0 errors. I have RMAed the processor & the motherboard. I have taken out one of the video cards and switched them. I have updated the bios. All of which have had no effect.Initially the CPU was running quite hot with the stock heatsink, but upon replacing it the CPU peaks at 50c.

I am having an annoying problem on my notebook. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium x64. My specs are;
Sony Vaio E series notebook
M460 CPU
8 Gb Ram
120 Gb Sandisk SSD
ATI HD 5650
An external 5.1 Creative sound card (USB)
And a 2TB 3.5" hard drive constantly hooked up.
My problem is, I leave the computer on its own for some time, while browser, music/video player, e-mail client vs. normal applications are running, because I need to go outside or due to any reason. When I get back after some time, I press a button to active the screen (I do not use any sleep or hibernation mode, or HDD switch off timeout. My PC constantly works), I get the screen but after a few seconds my pc freezes. The mouse also. It responds to nothing for an unspecified amount of time. I press buttons, move the cursor, try to click things but the screen just freezes. After some time (which varies in every freeze like this) my notebook starts to respond and act normal.
Interesting thing is, during a freeze I press the Windows button, and when the freeze is over, the notebook jumps up the start menu. It's like it freezes but also records the given commands during freeze. I tried setting an animated screensaver, but no difference. I return to the notebook, I press a key and it freezes again. The freezes go on or varied times, from 30 seconds to several minutes. Another interesting thing is when I leave a torrent program on, I don't encounter such freeze. It also happened right after a clean Windows restore.

I am on a 640 GB western digital HDD running Windows 7 Professional.
The symptom is that the computer RANDOMLY - no pattern to the freezing whatsoever- freezes. During this time, whatever sound was playing will stutter for a while, the screen will remain frozen with the image that was last on it. Their is no keyboard response, numlock etc... or mouse response.
Upon restarting, the event log has no recollection of what caused the issue. I have checked, many, many times, over the course of 3 weeks now. The only error it contains is the one stating that the computer unexpectedly shut down. Nothing else is pertinent.
I have all the latest drivers, for everything, BIOS updates, etc... as well as windows updates.
On top of that, i have reformatted my computer, and the problem still persists, but here's the kicker:
On a secondary drive, running windows XP professional 64 bit, the computer works just fine, never freezes at all, so i doubt its any hardware component, i have left it on for days to test this, and it still functions properly.
Specs:
E8500 Intel processor, core 2 duo 3.16 Ghz
8 GB of RAM
Cross-fire setup: two ATI Radeon HD4850 series cards
All on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3P motherboard

I am doing a clean install, Windows 7 from XP.Like many here I can get to the completing installation point before the installation freezes. It seems to be going well then it re-boots, at this point the display is a smaller format and the cusor freezes and the installation haults.I suspect that the graphics card might be the problem, GenForce 9800GTX.

I recently replaced all the parts in my computer except for the graphics card. So now that I have a practically new computer, I tried installing Windows 7. I have the Windows 7 Pro 64-bit DVD that I purchased at student pricing. My motherboard posts, and I can go into bios without any problems at all. Even my ram, which I only have 1 stick installed, is good. But when I pop in the Win7 DVD, it goes through the bars, then freezes at the animated logo with Starting Windows.

I put together a new system last night and proceeded to install Win 7 64-bit and all was well. It's a legit retail copy of the Win 7 upgrade disk bought from Amazon. After a handful of restarts (Windows updates, driver updates, etc) the computer decided to freeze at the Windows welcome screen (black screen w/Windows logo). I tried booting in safe mode and had no issues. I tried reverting to a previous save state prior to the freeze issues, but that didn't change anything. Safe mode continued to work.
I decided to attempt re-installing. Now I can't even get a working install. Windows 7 installs and then restarts. I get the welcome screen and then it goes to a screen where it's starting services, but then it just freezes. I've tried installing multiple times with the same results. Based on some digging in other threads I've tried:

I Have Recently Done a Clean Install of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Retail. I have literally tried everything but just do not understand why i Have A complete Freeze at Random Times( This freeze will have everything on the screen completely frozen and the mouse will move for maybe five seconds before also freezing.) Windows 7 Runs Good in Safe Mode So it has to be a driver is what i am thinking but i have no idea which one. I have updated the Display Driver numerous times. I tried Running the Display Driver that is there after the clean install, Which it froze still, I downloaded from Windows update, it Froze, I updated from Ati, It also froze. Like i said before I have also have ran in a virtual environment where it ran problem free with no freezes. I am completely stumped on this one. I have even look at the event viewer nothing really stands out before the critical Kernal Power error.
I have also tried a registry cleaner and cleaned the registry that was the last thing i tried and still froze moments later also. I read on other forums that it could be the wireless but i have disabled the wireless device as i dont even use the wireless. My computer is a Homebuilt computer ASuS motherboard, AMD Quadcore, ATI Radeon 4800 series... I am positve it cannot be the RAM or anything like that because I run Vista Home Premium x64 flawlessly and have since i downloaded it. So I know It got to be some kind of compatibility issue i just have no idea where to start.

Little background: computer was working like a charm on Windows 7 Ultimate, 64bits. A week ago, I started to have BSOD everytime I left the computer for around 10/15 minutes. I updated a lot of drivers etc.. then I formatted my C:/ and reinstalled Windows (still 7 ultimate x64 )So fresh install, antivirus scan is ok, graphic drivers updated, all windows updates done, I even updated the firmware of my SSD (Crucial 64Go) on which Windows is installed and flashed my bios to the latest version. Now, still after a while, my computer "semi-freezes" : depending of my use at the time, a video playing will stop, a browser will stay on the page but won't open new pages and a click on a folder of my Desktop will open a blank folder. I can't Ctrl+Alt+Suppr either.

My window start freezing, crashing or doesn't show anything on screen after I turn on the power. It happen randomly in window, safe mode and BIOS. It said "overclock failed" and I have to reset the system, but I don't remember ever overclocking it and I already reset the CMOS. This problem occur randomly and my computer DOES function properly in Windows once I passed the freezing, crashing or no screen random start-ups disasters. Seems turning on the computer is the only issue here. I am hoping someone can point me to the source of this problem. What control a computer start-up?

The worst thing is, this is a new PC and I've just freshly installed Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit on it.
I've already updated ALL my device drivers to the latest available, as well as applied all available Windows updates, yet it still happens. These weird CPU Spikes can occur seemingly randomly, and thereafter causes my OS to inevitably freeze or become EXTREMELY unresponsive at best. I am unable to Restart the computer (it either hangs at logging off or doesn't seem to be able to shutdown (left it trying to shutdown for 1 hour).
The onset has happened to me so far in these scenarios:
1) Just surfing the internet
2) Playing a video file
3) Leaving the computer idle (It was frozen when I got back to my PC)
4) Changing control panel settings
I was lucky enough to capture and save the screenshots showing it in Task Manager. The culprit process seems to be the 'SYSTEM' process (which shows only 25% CPU usage, however as you can see my ACTUAL CPU usage spikes all the way to 100%!
Quoted below is my system information:

Just built a brand spanking new rig (specs below), and I installed windows 7 onto my SSD (No Problem!) and proceeded to install drivers, format my extra drive and start installing other software and etc. Then randomly I would get a blue screen telling me some sort of data dump message and the system would reboot normally. This persisted and I booted in safe mode a few times no problem. This morning I tried to boot and Windows 7 froze on the "starting Windows" screen, no colored orbs here. Since then I have attempted to reinstall windows onto my SSD(same freezing issue even after waiting over 40 min.), install windows on my hdd(same issue) and boot without various components(video card, cd drive etc) to no avail. I also flashed the latest BIOS via USB and have attempted boots w/o usb, intel smart connect and rapid start, and other possible solutions.

I have just installed windows 7 OEM on my new computer build and was already having problems doing that, but now that I have it installed, it consistently freezes during boot-up or within seconds of logging in. I don't get a blue screen or anything, I just freeze and have to restart. I have tried disabling all of the start up programs and trying it, but that didn't seem to work. The only way I have been able to use my computer is in safe mode. The only drivers I have installed are my chipset and graphics as they were the only ones I could install without windows freezing during the installation.
