View 1 Replies View Relatedremoved the drive from the enclosure and got a SATA>USB dock thing for it. it didn't appear in the Computer with my internal drives but was visible in diskmgmt as "Healthy (Active, Recovery Partition)" but with the File System column empty and no letter assigned. right click only offers a menu with "Help" on it. used diskpart to assign a letter and it now appears in Computer but says all its capacity (except ~250mb) is free and, when I open it, there are no files to see, only a folder "Recovery", which is empty. in diskmgmt it still has no letter assigned. used a program called Recuva and it shows me some small files but nothing I recognise.

But the best way to scan a drive is to remove it and treat it as a purely 'dummy' data drive plugged into a usb drive dock and run the scan from a clean machine. This way any infected programs and/or O.S. on the drive will have no control to mask or hide themselves. My other computer is an HP Windows 7 laptop. So I removed the hard drive from the WinXP machine and via the USB drive dock and the Windows 7 laptop saw the WinXP drive icon appear. View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I save files from programs (aka Word, Photoshop, anything)onto my Desktop, I cannot see them directly from the actual desktop. I can only see them when I open up Explorer, and click on the Desktop tab. Then all my files are visible. I thought they were hidden...but they apparently aren't.It possibly seems like a refresh error.I did find a way around this..I go to Control Panel >> Appearance and Personalization >> Under Folder Options >> Show Hidden Files and Folders. I click on Reset folders, Apply, and then OK, and my missing files pop up on my actual desktop.But from then on, any new files I save are only visible in Explorer again. I don't want to go to Control Panel everytime I have to save something to the desktop? I've run Norton and Microsoft Essentials and I have no viruses. What can I do?I just found out I can also see my files after pressing f5 (refresh)so I guess the problem is HOW do I get my computer to refresh the desktop automatically?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a really annoying problem with desktop icons.I use 2 monitors. 1920x1200 is the main dislay and 1600x1200 is another one for extended desktop. The thing is that I don't need it all the time so I'd like to switch the extended desktop on and off when I need it. Problem is that entering the ex. desktop just somehow changes the grid (it seems that the grid becomes more compressed in vertical direction). That means that it always messes my icons up. I don't know why do the Windows change the grid when I do not change the resolution or just anything that could possibly affect the main screen.

But I have four system icons on the desktop, two of which I want to keep and two that I'd like to get rid of. The two keepers are the My Computer and Network icons, the two I don't wan to see are the Home Group and Library icons. This machine is the only Win-7 box on the network so Home Group is moot, and I do not expect to explicitly use Libraries any time soon. So the associated icons are just clutter on the desktop. For whatever reason, the two keepers include a "delete" option in their right click menus but the two I actually want to delete don't. So, how do I get them off the desktop? I don't think any of the four were present on the desktop when I completed the installation, and I don't remember what I did to get them to show up.

Here are two pictures: The first one shows my Lenovo x120e destop with the weird shadows, the second one is from another one of my windows 7 pc's that do not have the shadows problem. As you can see, the taskbar on the first image had these weird shadows, and I want to make these shadows go away. I did not see any solution that worked for the problem. Is Microsoft aware of it and is there a known remedy at this point. It is extremely frustrating to have it transition when I'm working.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just got the computer out of the shop about 2 weeks ago, same problem, it kept freezing after I turned it on.Right now I'm using it on Safe Mode, it doesn't freeze at all, but when I run it normally, it freezes on the desktop.I've done the ctrl + alt + del and end process -> explorer.exe and then file -> new process explorer.exe. It worked for probably 20 seconds, and then it froze. The mouse didn't even move any more.

I've since purchased a new hard drive and am ready to install it into my computer. This computer was store-bought and originally came with a copy of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit along with a sticker key on the case. It did not come with a recovery disk. My question is am I able to obtain another complete copy of Windows 7 either through the computer manufacturer or through Microsoft either free or at some cost or am I stuck purchasing another key for Windows 7? I'd like to add that the computer is no longer under warranty and I did not back up my old hard drive. Is it of any help to also obtain a Windows 7 Recovery Disk from the manufacturer?

But then, after i finalized my installation (Choose Computer name, choose Network, and install updates) It restarted for the last time (As it should) and when it loaded, an Acer Wallpaper loaded and my mouse...But no Desktop..If i would press CTRL+ALT+DEL a black screen would appear, and if i press esc, the background would come back...But when i go to safe mode the desktop works...My computer is good enough for Windows 7...And all the drivers are installed(checked on safe mode) Then i tried installing again
