Windows 7 Backup Did Not Complete Successfully - Files Skipped
Feb 7, 2010
I keep getting an error when running a windows 7 backup. it backs up to a linux server on the network. network sharing is correct. At the very end of the backup it says some files were skipped. when i check on the linux server the hard drive is full of files so it has access so I don't think it is a network problem.
I had a look at the log files in "C:WindowsLogsWindowsBackup" at the file "Backup Files 2010-02-07 190008_error.txt". It says "Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:WindowsSystem32configsystemprofileWebsites. Error: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)".
I have made a Library in my Library folder called websites containing website files.

I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a problem, namely that Windows Backup doesn't seem to be working atm. When I try to backup, no matter what the files or destination drive, I get the error "the backup did not complete successfully" during the "creating volume shadow copy" phase. When "troubleshooting options" pops up, it says "The requested system device cannot be found" and gives error code 0x80073BC3.
It worked until recently, I have no idea what caused the problem I haven't updated my hardware or anything.

I have Win 7 Home Premium SP1. For the past year and a half, I've been using the Win 7 backup about once a month without any problems. My hard drive is partitioned into drives C and D, and I back up onto an external hard disk, which appears as Drive I when connected. (The external hard disk is partitioned into drives G, H, I, but there is plenty of space on drive I).
In addition, more often, I back up my important data folders (using MS Synctoy) on a USB flash memory which appears as Drive F. Yesterday, I backed up to the flash memory. Then I did the Win 7 backup to my external hard disc, but I forgot to remove the flash memory from the USB port, which I always do. When the Win 7 backup finished, I got an error message from Windows Backup: "Windows Backup did not complete successfully. The backup completed but some files were skipped."
When I looked at "View Skipped Files", it said "Windows Backup skipped F:Music because it cannot be found on drive F:." (There is no "Music folder on drive F). So I took out the USB flash memory and tried Win 7 Backup again (twice). Same result. Then I shut down the PC for the night. This morning I turned it on again. Everything else seemed to be working. So I did Win 7 Backup with the same result.
I looked at "Restore all users' files" in the Backup Window, and there I see that I have only a folder called "Users" backed up from the C Drive, and only a folder called "Music" backed up from the D Drive. I have many other folders in these drives, and even these folders only show a small portion of the files in those folders on my PC. It also shows that there is an empty F:Music folder backed up. Just to remind you - there is no F Drive once I remove my USB flash memory.
Looking at "Manage Windows Backup Space" I see that on Drive I (the backup drive) I use 26.6 GB for Data File Backup, 95 GB for System Image, with 64 GB of free space on the drive. Since my C and D drives have a total of 74 GB used space, and I assume Win 7 Backup compresses files, these numbers look reasonable to me. Are my files backed up or not? Why the silly error message? My external hard disk seems fine, as best as I can tell.

These are the error messages that I get on my Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate PC and the different steps that I have performed: "System Restore did not complete successfully. Your computers files and settings were not changed. Details: System Restore failed to extract the original copy of the directory from the restore point. Source: %SystemRoot% egistration Destination: ComPlusStaging." I ran the file checker tool (sfc.exe) from the command prompt and no missing or corrupted files were reported. I got a confirmation that no problems were found.

I have window seven Hp pavilion 64 bit, 4 ghz sp1, computer and I have never had so many problems. I have done at least 4 system restores. The screen flashes, I have adjusted monitor display size. Computer will not complete a backup. I hear my dvd drive making noises. The computer is slow. Could not install adobe reader until last night. My last index number was 3.3 to 2.6 and now it says 3.3. I don't know what my default browser is, firefox, and windows tell me they are not.
How do I find out if I have malware, virus and or browser is jacked? My prairie form cleaner shows me my computer is collecting large files or daily activity. Also, I want to know if my computer is recording, how can I tell? I want to make sure the back door is closed. I have scanned with Norton, Windows Defender, Avast and AVG over the time and I have had at least 4 items to return. 3 items were removed 1 quarantined and I have done restores since then.

From what I hear, pretty much everyone in the developed world who uses 7 will have Windows Backup included - not just files and folders, but system image backup as well.
Your average punter is not going to look any further than that.
That's got to be bad news for Acronis, Macrium, etc.
Sure, the enthusiasts will check out 3rd party options - like they do with browsers.
You would think the big name must have considered an anti - trust case.
Maybe they didn't go ahead as some versions of 7 won't include it ( you're not very likely to see those).
Or because they didn't want to upset the MS lovers - witness the vitriol heaped on Opera by people who should know better.
It was available in Vista - but only the higher priced versions - people chose to pay extra for that.
Here's another chance for a controversial discussion - go for it.

I have a new Dell XPS 13 (Windows 7 64-bit) and am pleased with it thus far. I have successfully created a system image on DVDs (Using Windows utility).
Twice I have tried the Windows Backup utility to back up all user files (what Windows selects) to DVDs and it does not complete! The utility gets to 66% or 67% running for approx 4-6 hours and does not prompt to insert another DVD (the 2nd). The total size of data to backup is approx 11GB. The second time I disabled the antivirus software (MSE) hoping that was causing the problem.
Any suggestions or solutions?
I'd like to backup to DVDs as I have plenty and do not have an external HD available.

Recently the external HD with my complete iTunes library crashed and could not be repaired/accessed. Fortunately one of my children had a copy of it - but had deleted a substantial amount of classical music that did not interest him.But after the deletion his HD had only been used to play the songs, nothing was added or edited, so I thought it would be easy to undelete or recover 'my lost music'. My first disappointment was that the good old UNDELETE command in MS-DOS no longer seems to work in Windows 7. Correct?I found Windows 7 information that deleted files can be recovered with the 'previous versions' option, but for my music no previous version could be found. Or did I look the wrong way? Then I used three different file recovery systems: minitools data recovery, file recover, recover my files.
All three found tons of files (90% the same ones), but hardly any usable music. Most was crap - and you can only find out by testing each individual file.First of all, the files names were often not the songtitles, but something like $BN76GTP4A. If a property field contains a song title and/or artist name and/or duration, it is often the incorrect one. The file itself too is often crap: it starts in the middle of a song, then after 10 seconds switches to a complete different piece of music - and so on. Unpredictable result.I always thought that recovering/undeleting data from a 'non-affected' HD was easy as drinking a cup of tea. Apparently not. Where are the days that it was enough to run MS-Dos > Undelete and find ALL deleted files complete and unharmed, with only the first file name letter replaced by _ or $. Those days seem gone. Why?

I don't know if this has been asked already and sorry if it has.
Is there a way to save both Vista and Windows 7 complete system image on the same partition? If possible rename the folders at least (I tried this but didn't work)?
I have a limited space in my hard drive and allocated only one partition for system backups. I'm quite happy with Windows 7 and I would like to have both Vista and Windows 7 backups just in case. I'm also trying to avoid multiple DVDs as backup media as much as possible so that restoring the image would be easier for my kid when i'm not around.

When attempting to backup a system image and/or selected libraries or files on an OEM installation of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, I am receiving an error message. The initial pop-up states: The Last Backup Did Not Complete Successfully When I click on the pop-up to check the backup and select More Details, I see the following message. The System cannot find the file specified Error Code: 0x80070002 No additional information is provided. (And no clue is provided regarding what file is not found.) While I am attempting to backup to an external hard drive connected via eSATA, this error also occurs when I attempt a backup to either an external USB drive or a DVD.
I have attempted to run various backup scenarios wherein [a] Windows selects what to backup, [b] I choose a system image only, [c] I choose libraries only, or [d] I choose a very small data directory in a directory outside of the libraries. The error is always the same. When the system image is included, the backup does run for a time before the error message occurs and a significant amount of data is written to the drive. When I run a file-only backup, the error is almost instantaneous. So far, in attempting to resolve the problem I have taken the following steps (although not necessarily in this order): Confirmed the registry profiles image paths are accordance with the information found at: The Storage Team at Microsoft - File Cabinet Blog : Common causes and solutions to Backup, System Restore, and Complete PC Backup problems - updated!. Everything was correct, no problems found. Ran the system file checker (sfc /scannow) with no errors reported. Scanned all hard drives (chkdsk x: /r) Confirmed that VSS and Windows Backup Services are running via services.msc Although I didnt think it applied, I tested the Hotfix suggested at: You encounter problems when you move data over USB from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer that has an NVIDIA USB EHCI chipset and at least 4GB of RAM. No success. Reviewed the information at Error code 0x80070002 when you back up files in Windows 7 however the scenarios did not apply and therefore the solutions were not available to me. Checked the error logs at C:WindowsLogsWindowsBackup, but the error log is empty . Ran a Clean Boot via msconfig.exe Attempted to run Backup in Safe Mode, but of course Backup & Restore cannot be run in safe mode, even if I try to start the services manually (Error 1084). Reset Backup Files Configuration, using instructions at: Backup User and System Files - Reset to Default Configuration I am extraordinarily frustrated. This is a new computer, and an almost new installation of Windows. I have obviously missed something, but dont know what it is. I am desperate for a solution.

The test result is under Windows 7 build 7000
1. Open backup and restore center
2. Set backup settings
a. Choose backup locations to local disk, for example f:
b. Choose [Let me choose]
c. What do you want to back up?
Only choose the folder of c:program fileswindows photo viewer
Do not choose [Include a system image]
d. Backup summary
Items are c:program fileswindows photo viewer
e. Save settings and start backup
Result:
There is no files under F:TEST-PCBackup Set 2008-09-29 032022Backup Files 2008-09-29 032022Backup files 1.zip
So, the question is why we can not backup this folder at the first time(it should be a full backup)

Any simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.
Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

So I have 42gb of priceless tv shows that are taking up too much space on my comp... What I want to do is compress these files. The only issue is that in order compress I need the room for the uncompressed AND compressed files. Is there a way I can tell Winrar to delete complete files as it is done rarring them? (Assuming winrar compresses files one at a time) That way if it were to stop suddenly like in a power outage or something the files wouldn't get deleted unless there were fully compressed... So yea I need to compress files but don't have the room to compress them...

I had windows 7 keep giving me a blue screen more often than not. I decided to reinstall windows. All went well and I don't get any blue screens. Now most of my 500g drive is 2 files (windows.old and windows.old.000). Now I don't have any room to backup my computer. These 2 files take up about 300g. I went to my local computer store and they this is normal for windows 7 and the files just keep getting bigger as time goes on. They advised me that I should have at least 2T drive to keep running windows 7. So my question is, can I delete the old backup files because I'm only using less than 200g on an ongoing bases. My operating system tells me that I don't have backup setup and I don't have room to set it up. I would have just over 300g free if I could delete these 2 files.

For a few years my wife has resisted using any kind of backup solution even the built-in Windows backup. She has simply made her own backups on the root of an external drive. She simply copies all the files she wants to backup into a folder with the same name as her computer. G:/COMPUTER_NAME/.
Well, yesterday, she decided to start using Windows backup to simplify her life.
I've used Windows backup for years, but when we set up her machine, I was unaware that she had this folder called "COMPUTER_NAME". Well, perhaps you've guessed, Windows backup created it's backup on the root of the drive, calling it "COMPUTER_NAME".
She cried for hours, fearing that 10 years of family photos she's taken are gone forever (they were saved in the folder "G:/Computer_name", but they were not part of her local computer files, and therefore, not saved in the "computer_name" backup file created by Windows).
My first thought was to use some Photo/File recovery program. But after sleeping on the problem, it occurs to me that perhaps the files aren't really gone, since the folder had the same name, perhaps Windows did not overwrite the directory's structure and files, though because the name of the directory and the name of the backup file are the same, the directory is simply not accessible.
best way to try and restore the directory (before trying photo/file restoration programs).

But when I browse through the backup folders using Windows Backup, it does not show any of his recent files.
