Move Windows 7 Backup Files To A New Larger HDD?

Mar 17, 2011

I purchased a larger external hdd for my Win 7 Backup. I would like to move or copy the existing Win 7 Backup/Restore files to the new external hdd to freeup the old external drive for other data. Do you just copy the Backup folders on the old hdd to the new drive? Strangely, the Win 7 Backup folders' properties show zero bytes. I have restored files / folders from the Backup files, so I know they are not empty.

Move Windows 7 From A Larger HDD To A Smaller SSD?

Jan 15, 2011

I have a 5900 RPM 1T Hard drive currently running my O.S and a few other programs, but it has gotten to the point where I would like to speed up the boot time and running certain applications. I wam looking at getting a SSD that at most will have 124GB of storrage space. I tried ghosting one hard drive to a smaller faster hard drive on my laptop so I know that it won't work but I have heard some people talking that their is a way to make the computer think that all the free space on the hard drive is gone and the hard drive is only as big as how much space is actually taken up.

Why Is Backup Larger Than System's Harddrive

Oct 27, 2011

I successfully backed up my computer to an external harddrive using Windows 7 backup. I used Windows recommended settings.

My computer's local disk is currently 216 GB. When I backed up my computer to the harddrive it says that the backup is 384 GB. Can somebody explain to me why my backup is larger than my system's harddrive?

Also, just so you know, I don't have any previous backups that need to be deleted. And just to be sure I ran the backup numerous times always getting the same size as a result (384 GB).

I would like to have a complete backup but don't want to use up so much space. Is there an easy way to change a setting so that I can save disk space on my external drive while have a thorough and comprehensive backup.

Windows Journal Freeze Or Slowdown With 2mb Or Larger Files

Feb 16, 2012

I've been having problems with windows journal when a note file reaches 2mb or more. I use an (older) tablet pc with a core duo CPU running Windows Home Edition and I wonder whether this may be the problem as upgrading my RAM to 4GB didn't help at all. One way around this would be to have smaller files with different chunks of the data (diagrams and hand written notes) but I would have thought a 2mb file wouldn't cause such problems. I've been considering upgrading to a brand new tablet but if the problem is with the software then I don't see much point yet.

Move Drive With Windows 7 Easily To Backup Computer Without Activation?

Nov 7, 2012

I would like to come up with a way to provide a full backup computer to my customers (offline, process control application). Currently doing this with WinXP and a hot-swap RAID-1 enclosure. If anything in computer1 dies, can quickly move the cables and the drive over to computer2, boot up and keep running. Now moving to Windows 7, more strict activation issues. Getting a separate windows license for each computer is not a problem, but how to either change the license key easily after the swap, or avoid activation altogether? Typical system is offline, possibly abroad and would like to make the failover as easy as possibly for customers.

Backup Files Fail To Backup Files In Program Files

The test result is under Windows 7 build 7000

1. Open backup and restore center

2. Set backup settings

a. Choose backup locations to local disk, for example f:

b. Choose [Let me choose]

c. What do you want to back up?

Only choose the folder of c:program fileswindows photo viewer

Do not choose [Include a system image]

d. Backup summary

Items are c:program fileswindows photo viewer

e. Save settings and start backup

Result:

There is no files under F:TEST-PCBackup Set 2008-09-29 032022Backup Files 2008-09-29 032022Backup files 1.zip

So, the question is why we can not backup this folder at the first time(it should be a full backup)

UnableTo Move BackUp File

May 28, 2012

I have big file (133Gb) backup file on my hard drive and I wanted to move this to external hard drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Drive). When I tried it to move or copy to the external I've got message: Error 0x8007045D: The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error. I was looking online for some help and I found some advice that I have to make chkdsk in cmd mode but when I tried I've got message: "Chkdsk" is not recognized as a internal or external command, operable program or batch file. I don't know how to solve this problem. Can someone help me? My OS is win 7 Enterprise x86.

Possible To Move XP Backup To RAID 0 Drive

May 29, 2012

Just wondering what or if I could move an xp backup onto a raid 0 drive. I did setup the drives in raid in the bios, and they show as raid. I booted into my marcium backup and ran my xp backup onto the drive, that showed in marcium as a raid 0 drive. When I booted, which went fine, into xp it shows in disk management as raid 0. But the problem is, it shows two drives, together and the 2nd drive as being un partitioned. Therefore I'm only running on one drive. Is this fixable, or do I need a clean install?

Fresh Installation - Any Way To Backup Settings And Move To New OS?

Oct 20, 2012

I'm having an issue with my tower that I built and I'm wondering if starting with a fresh OS installation will do the trick. My current setup is one hard drive for nothing but the OS and programs and multiple other drives to save files to. My issue is that I use the Windows Backup utility to backup the drives that contain important information. If I were to install a fresh copy of the OS, I imagine that the system wouldn't realize that I've performed a backup on the other drives before and would want to do a complete backup all over again rather than being able to do an incremental backup. Is there a way to backup the settings and log files of the Windows Backup utility to move to the new OS? The drive letters and everything else will be the exact same as they are right now. This also makes me curios of how other backup programs behave when the OS has to be reinstalled.

Backup Software That Splits Large Files For Incremental Backup

Dec 3, 2012

Any simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.

Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

Move Program FIles To SSD - Leave Users Files Behind?

Jun 2, 2011

Greetings Again,

My file and storage system is set up like this:
C: Drive - 120 GB SSD This is my Win 7 64-Bit Ultimate Boot drive. It has my most important Microsoft programs on it. Out of the 111GB available, I've used 42GB, leaving me 69GB free space. I want to keep this area open.

My next drive is a 1TB WD Caviar Black segmented into 3 partitions.

E: Drive = Program FIles This has the majority and rest of my programs. It also includes USERs Files. I've use 96GB out of 150GB. Out of that 96GB, 64GB are in USERS files.

F: Drive = Data Files. This stores all of my data except for media. I've used 91GB out of 350. I want to leave this be.

G:| Drive = Medsia FIles This stores all Media = Vids, Music, Graphics, Pictures. I've used 80 GB out of 500GB

I also have a 64GB ~ 55GB actual storage SSD drive that is partitioned but has no data on it or assigned drive letter.

Here is what I want to accomplish. i want to move my actual Program FIles to the 64GB SSD, assign it a drive letter, and keep the USERS files where they now reside on the F: dirve

My main concern is that in moving all these files around and splitting the USERS files from the Program Files that I'll mees up my Registry. Will someone please suggest some links I might read that will best help me acheive these moves.

My main purpose is to actually move them into another folder. It's only these few days that my computer is acting like this. I can move/delete/rename other avi or mp4 files.
