View 4 RepliesI changed the values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionProfileList in order to move the default user locations to my second partition. I then created a new user profile but when I try to login I get the message 'The User Profile Service failed the login'. When I set these values back to normal, new accounts work fine but I really want my user accounts on the second partition.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just upgraded from Vista where we had two user account profiles on the D partition, as I recall, Vista prompted me to set it up this way initially. I got used to using this method, as my single hdd is divided into two partitions, C for the OS and D for Data. I did a new clean install of Windows 7 into a C partition which is I think 100GB is size, and there is a D partition which is empty and is around 400GB.I have been reading how to move the user profiles to the D drive but it seems too confusing (at least more confusing than in Vista). So I thought about maybe using the library feature if that is what MS has intended it to be used for.But it looks like the C drive would still continue to be used for user data. IF that is so, what I am supposed to fill the D drive with, or how am I to fill itI would like to begin migrating my iTunes back from my external hdd, and want to be sure to put it in the right place, but with at least 45GB of media there alone, the C drive will quickly fill up.

Your average punter is not going to look any further than that.
That's got to be bad news for Acronis, Macrium, etc.
Sure, the enthusiasts will check out 3rd party options - like they do with browsers.
You would think the big name must have considered an anti - trust case.
Maybe they didn't go ahead as some versions of 7 won't include it ( you're not very likely to see those).
Or because they didn't want to upset the MS lovers - witness the vitriol heaped on Opera by people who should know better.
It was available in Vista - but only the higher priced versions - people chose to pay extra for that.

I have a new Dell XPS 13 (Windows 7 64-bit) and am pleased with it thus far. I have successfully created a system image on DVDs (Using Windows utility).
Twice I have tried the Windows Backup utility to back up all user files (what Windows selects) to DVDs and it does not complete! The utility gets to 66% or 67% running for approx 4-6 hours and does not prompt to insert another DVD (the 2nd). The total size of data to backup is approx 11GB. The second time I disabled the antivirus software (MSE) hoping that was causing the problem.
Any suggestions or solutions?
I'd like to backup to DVDs as I have plenty and do not have an external HD available.
I downloaded the VMware software to my C: drive, and when I clicked the file to open it, it opened to about 90% at which point I got the following error: Setup cannot continue. The Microsoft Runtime DLL installer failed to complete installation.I have Windows 7 and plenty of HD space. I've never had this installation problem before. It seems that Windows 7 has been a lot of trouble since I've bought this laptop; I've encountered numerous problems with software using it, though I don't know if this problem is related to it.

View 4 Replies View RelatedLeft my computer on overnight, came in this morning and rebooted from sleep mode and it started to load then I got a black screen with the message "the last attempt to resume from its last location failed - attempt to resume again? The message continues - "continue with system resume" or the other option is to "delete restoration data and proceed to system boot menu" - this is highlighted but the enter key or arrow will not activate. I have the original Windows 7 ultimate disc but it will not boot it up, also cannot access safe mode with f8. I have an accounting package for my business on this computer and cannot lose it.

I have a limited space in my hard drive and allocated only one partition for system backups. I'm quite happy with Windows 7 and I would like to have both Vista and Windows 7 backups just in case. I'm also trying to avoid multiple DVDs as backup media as much as possible so that restoring the image would be easier for my kid when i'm not around.
I was wondering if anyone could help me out with a problem, namely that Windows Backup doesn't seem to be working atm. When I try to backup, no matter what the files or destination drive, I get the error "the backup did not complete successfully" during the "creating volume shadow copy" phase. When "troubleshooting options" pops up, it says "The requested system device cannot be found" and gives error code 0x80073BC3.
It worked until recently, I have no idea what caused the problem I haven't updated my hardware or anything.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI set up Backup and Restore in the Wrong place, I believe. I set it up on my G Drive which is called HP Tools. The drive capacity is 3.95G. I began getting messages that there was no more room on the G Drive. It had only saved to the drive once.
So I went out and purchased a 8G flash drive and set it up to use that drive. Now I am getting similar notices saying there is no more space on that drive. It has only saved one restore point.
How much space do I need? In the past, with other computers, I have saved it on my C drive I believe.
When attempting to backup a system image and/or selected libraries or files on an OEM installation of Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, I am receiving an error message. The initial pop-up states: The Last Backup Did Not Complete Successfully When I click on the pop-up to check the backup and select �More Details,� I see the following message. The System cannot find the file specified Error Code: 0x80070002 No additional information is provided. (And no clue is provided regarding what �file� is not found.) While I am attempting to backup to an external hard drive connected via eSATA, this error also occurs when I attempt a backup to either an external USB drive or a DVD.
I have attempted to run various backup scenarios wherein [a] Windows selects what to backup, [b] I choose a system image only, [c] I choose libraries only, or [d] I choose a very small data directory in a directory outside of the libraries. Just wondering if it's possible to make Windows backup do it in another place besides the root of another drive.It's really annoying seeing those files all the time,so I move them to a folder anyways.. which ocfourse windows fails to see then, but since I dont have a schedueled backup it's ok for now... Just need the one master backup for now, and if i add something or change something I move the files back to root to do that.

For years, I have kept most of my data on a drive/partition other than C drive. Let's call this other data drive/partition, D drive.
With the frequent install of Windows 7 builds, I started changing the location of My Documents, My Pictures, and My Music to D drive as I've done for years, but I even went ahead and mapped the location of Desktop, Favorites, Searches, etc to the D drive as well.
The benefit of this is I didn't have to physically copy/move this data before doing a clean install, I just had to go in and change the default locations to the appropriate D drive paths/locations after a clean install. This is a bit of work and is tedious, but less work than moving data, etc.
I've had my kids computer dual-booting Windows XP & Windows 7 for months as well. In Windows 7, that computer has an account for me (admin purposes) and four more accounts for our four kids. Now, imagine the tedious work of manually changing the locations for My Documents, Desktop, etc in Windows 7 for all 5 accounts on that computer.
I would like to think that there is some way of backing up the location settings for My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, Desktop, etc for each account, maybe even backup the settings for the custom Start Menus, Desktop Wallpaper, and so on.
Has anyone seen a way of backing up these settings manually, using a 3rd party utility, or using some Microsoft admin tool?
I keep getting an error when running a windows 7 backup. it backs up to a linux server on the network. network sharing is correct. At the very end of the backup it says some files were skipped. when i check on the linux server the hard drive is full of files so it has access so I don't think it is a network problem.

I have made a Library in my Library folder called websites containing website files.
I have window seven Hp pavilion 64 bit, 4 ghz sp1, computer and I have never had so many problems. I have done at least 4 system restores. The screen flashes, I have adjusted monitor display size. How do I find out if I have malware, virus and or browser is jacked? My prairie form cleaner shows me my computer is collecting large files or daily activity. I recently bought a maxtor 500 gb external hdd and i just cant get it to work with windows 7, i got a computer at home where i want to keep it that has windows 7 rc , I have tryed everything i can think of to make it work but nothing does, I cant see it in my computer or with the explorer, but I can see it with computer management, It doesn´t have a drive letter or NTFS and I just cant do anything to it, I cant format it then I get the error "An unexpected error has occured. check the system event log for more information on the error. If the problem persists close the Disk Management console then restart Disk Management or restart the computer."Now im getting pretty annoyed with trying different things on it but can´t seem to make it work, now on the other hand it does work on my laptop computer wich has Windows vista, and it works fine, also works on another computer I have that has Windows XP, can anyone please help me with this problem I would prefer to not have to format it since I did put alot of data on it from my other computers but if I have to then so be it .
View 3 Replies View RelatedI performed a successful clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I installed the OS to a 100gb volume with the intention of using that only for the OS. I, without thinking, allowed the setup to name that drive C. Further, without noticing I allowed the Programs folder and the Users folder to go into this volume. I intended for everything but the OS to go into a large second file named E. When I tell it to back up the desktop for my user profile, however, there's nothing to backup, even though my desktop shows items on it. I found those items in the "public" desktop folder. After installing all my basic applications I then decided to create a backup on my spare 1TB allocating 50 gig for the image. The image itself is only 35gig but when I click on create image it runs for a little while then displays the following message:
"There is not enough disk space to create the volume shadow copy on storage location. Make sure that for all volume to be backup up, the minimum disk space required for shadow copy creation is available. this applies to both the backup storage destination and volume included in the backup. Minimum requirement for Volumes less than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 50 megabyte of free space. For volumes more than 500 megabytes, the minimum is 320 megabytes of free space. Recommended at least 1 gigabytes free of disk space on each volumes if volumes size is more than 1 gigabytes (0x80780119)". It seem like the OS does not recognise 1TB hdd
I originally backed up my System & User files using the Backup utility in Tools to a slave drive. That drive was full so I purchased a larger capacity drive and installed it in place of the original slave drive.
I copied over my data but have been unable to copy the file original "Backup" file (shows "0" bytes & empty) I created.
I also had a "WindowsImageBackup" folder (160GB) that had folders and files in it that I have also not been able to copy to the new slave drive.
I am saving my old "Slave" drive so I assume I can use it to restore my original image I created, eyh?
In my user folder, I think I right-clicked the Favorites folder and changed the location to C: in an attempt to get rid of it. Now it seems my C:Windows folder has renamed itself to Favorites.
