Can't Move WindowsImageBack Or System & User File To A New Location

Nov 11, 2011

I originally backed up my System & User files using the Backup utility in Tools to a slave drive. That drive was full so I purchased a larger capacity drive and installed it in place of the original slave drive.

I copied over my data but have been unable to copy the file original "Backup" file (shows "0" bytes & empty) I created.

I also had a "WindowsImageBackup" folder (160GB) that had folders and files in it that I have also not been able to copy to the new slave drive.

I am saving my old "Slave" drive so I assume I can use it to restore my original image I created, eyh?

Windows 7 Sharing 'breaks' When Move A File To Shared Location

Jan 15, 2013

Why does Windows 7's networking/sharing have to be infinitely more complicated than XP was? I have a computer running Windows 7 Home x64 that I call "file server". My main day-to-day machine is a laptop running Windows 7 Pro x64. There are several other computers throughout the house all running WinXP Pro (32 bit). I do a lot of video processing on my laptop, and whenever a file is done processing and ready to live on the file server, I move it over there. As soon as I do this, sharing for the computer called "file server" DIES. All shares on the machine become inaccessible, and all other machines lose access. My workaround for the time being is to simply reboot the file server, which magically restores sharing. However, this is a horrible workaround since files of all types are being accessed from that machine all day long.

Change USER And Programs File Location?

Aug 21, 2010

I performed a successful clean install of Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit. I installed the OS to a 100gb volume with the intention of using that only for the OS. I, without thinking, allowed the setup to name that drive C. Further, without noticing I allowed the Programs folder and the Users folder to go into this volume. I intended for everything but the OS to go into a large second file named E. My thinking is that the only way that I can fix this situation is to do a new clean install and get it right this time (as much as my limited knowledge will allow. how to rectify this. ntel e6600 Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz Noctua NH-U12P CoolerASUS P5QOCZ Reaper 2X2GB DDR2 800 (PC 6400) EVGA GeForce 8800GTS 640 MB WD 250GB GB SATA II Corsair CMPSU 550W

Its curious because when I open up the properties for these Public folders it shows the existing location and there is a note saying you can change the location ..., but there is not a move button nor can you change what is listed in the location text box. So how do you change the location?

User Sets File Association And Now System Restore Does Not Work

Aug 13, 2012

On a brand new laptop the user copied some word files over, and they opened on the new computer just fine. Then they copied some more .doc files and they could not open them, so (they claim) they choose word as the default file association (which is fine, except it should not have prompted for that in the first place). After that all the word document shortcuts they created on the desktop changed to a shortcut with IE's 'e' symbol - clicking them flashes up a screen that instantly goes away (ie I assume) and ie's download file dialog then opens. Further, an attempt to open ie acts the same way. Worse, running system restore does the same thing - flash, then ie files downloaded dialog - asking if I want to open one of the files listed (which are the .lnk files to the word documents on the desktop). So short of doing a full system restore, and also short of manually copying the registry files from the last restore point (which I'm not sure is even possible on a windows 7 drive) what can I do to resolve this mess?

I'm setting up the backup for my computer. When I tell it to back up the desktop for my user profile, however, there's nothing to backup, even though my desktop shows items on it. I found those items in the "public" desktop folder. When I check in HKEYCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsExplorerUsershellfolders, however, the Desktop data shows %USERPROFILE%Desktop, which is the path to my user desktop folder. I could just backup the public desktop folder, but I really don't want my desktop to be public.

Can't Move User Folders

Aug 11, 2011

I have a main folder named after the user acct (I believe it's called the User Folder???), which by default contains 13 other folders, such as My Documents, My Pictures, etc. (There are a bunch of hidden folders in there as well)I'm using some file backup software that has a plug-in to backup the entire My Documents folder. In XP, I simply moved any desired folders into My Documents for backup. What I've found in Windows 7, is these "user" folders seem to be locked in this main folder, and when moved into My Documents, the original folder magically reappears in the main user folder. So I end up with 2 identical folders. One inside My Documents, and one in the main user folder. (eg: My Music)My backup software doesn't like this at all.Is there any way to make these folders behave like regular folders that can just be moved around?

Windows 7 Move User Profiles Or Use Libraries?

Aug 13, 2010

I have just upgraded from Vista where we had two user account profiles on the D partition, as I recall, Vista prompted me to set it up this way initially. I got used to using this method, as my single hdd is divided into two partitions, C for the OS and D for Data. I did a new clean install of Windows 7 into a C partition which is I think 100GB is size, and there is a D partition which is empty and is around 400GB.I have been reading how to move the user profiles to the D drive but it seems too confusing (at least more confusing than in Vista). So I thought about maybe using the library feature if that is what MS has intended it to be used for.But it looks like the C drive would still continue to be used for user data. IF that is so, what I am supposed to fill the D drive with, or how am I to fill itI would like to begin migrating my iTunes back from my external hdd, and want to be sure to put it in the right place, but with at least 45GB of media there alone, the C drive will quickly fill up.

If I run multiple OSes, having all the User folders in a partition by itself might eliminate duplication. If there is a thread on how to redirect the the user folders, that would be helpful. Noticed that even with Admin authority I can't move all the files in C:User.Need to mention I use just one User and give it Admin privileges, so maybe the easy way would be just set up a Drive D and put all my User data there.
