Move A Folder Within The Appdata/roaming Folder To Another Location?

Jan 22, 2013

I have a boot drive which is 250gb (My C drive). I have Win 7 and some apps on it.I have installed Steam on my other hard drive. So far most games have been cooperative and install their folders close to Steam! However, one game in particular (Empire Total War) has installed one of its folders in "C:UsersXYZAppDataRoamingThe Creative Assembly".From experience from my old PC, I know this folder (The Creative Assembly) can grow to close to 20gb in a matter of a year. I don't want that to happen and therefore thought of relocating, moving, or redirecting this folder (The Creative Assembly) to another location. How do I do that and is that recommended? (I could simply go ahead and do this right now, but I would rather get some expert opinions first before any instabiliti

Shortcut To Swich Desktop Folder Location

Nov 10, 2012

I was thinking of a way to make life easier on a computer, and I came up with a sort of multi-desktop system I would love to have on my computer. I know a bit about registry editing, but not enough to do this since it would probably require creating a small program. With a simple keyboard shortcut (I'm thinking of something like Shift+Windows), the computer would switch the registry value for the Desktop's folder location. The idea would be to have a small program where I can set up a list of locations and give them an order in which they would cycle through. As far as I can understand, just changing the registry value would not change anything until I logoff/restart, which implies that there has to be some sort of task running which refreshes the position? Now is the part where things might just be too complicated to be possible : ideally, it would be nice to have options to change the background image depending on the folder you are in and, if possible, have the name of the folder written somewhere on the screen (to avoid confusion and messyness). Now the coolest way to do this, according to me, would be to cycle through saved themes when you cycle through folders, which would allow to change window colors etc.I know this is something big and probably not easy to create, but the more I think about it, the more I love the idea... It would make life SO much easier and force people ho have ultra-messy desktops to be a bit more organized.

Default User Desktop Folder Location?

Jul 30, 2011

I'm setting up the backup for my computer. When I tell it to back up the desktop for my user profile, however, there's nothing to backup, even though my desktop shows items on it. I found those items in the "public" desktop folder. When I check in HKEYCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsExplorerUsershellfolders, however, the Desktop data shows %USERPROFILE%Desktop, which is the path to my user desktop folder. I could just backup the public desktop folder, but I really don't want my desktop to be public.

Move Location Of Public Folders To Another Harddrive?

Sep 7, 2012

I have a solid state drive with limited capacity so I would like Public folders to be on another hard drive. I'm able to change the location of the regular My Documents, My Pictures, etc. to the other drive but not the Public folders. Its curious because when I open up the properties for these Public folders it shows the existing location and there is a note saying you can change the location ..., but there is not a move button nor can you change what is listed in the location text box. So how do you change the location?

Can't Move WindowsImageBack Or System & User File To A New Location

Nov 11, 2011

I originally backed up my System & User files using the Backup utility in Tools to a slave drive. That drive was full so I purchased a larger capacity drive and installed it in place of the original slave drive.

I copied over my data but have been unable to copy the file original "Backup" file (shows "0" bytes & empty) I created.

I also had a "WindowsImageBackup" folder (160GB) that had folders and files in it that I have also not been able to copy to the new slave drive.

I am saving my old "Slave" drive so I assume I can use it to restore my original image I created, eyh?

Windows 7 Sharing 'breaks' When Move A File To Shared Location

Jan 15, 2013

Why does Windows 7's networking/sharing have to be infinitely more complicated than XP was? I have a computer running Windows 7 Home x64 that I call "file server". My main day-to-day machine is a laptop running Windows 7 Pro x64. There are several other computers throughout the house all running WinXP Pro (32 bit). I do a lot of video processing on my laptop, and whenever a file is done processing and ready to live on the file server, I move it over there. As soon as I do this, sharing for the computer called "file server" DIES. All shares on the machine become inaccessible, and all other machines lose access. My workaround for the time being is to simply reboot the file server, which magically restores sharing. However, this is a horrible workaround since files of all types are being accessed from that machine all day long.

Moving The Location Of The Program Folder

May 26, 2009

I'm soon to be installing RC1, and I was thinking of abandoning my raid array and using the two discs thus:

Disc 1 ( ; system and page file

Disc 2 ; Programmes

I had my other discs organised thus:

Disc 3 ; my user's disc

Disc 4 ; My partner's users disc

Disc 5 ; storage / backup / and music stuff.

My question is this, how does one change the location of the programs folder so that it would read:

D:programs instead of C:programs?

Windows 7 Music Folder Location?

Oct 27, 2012

I'm trying to change the "Music" location from "C:UsersUserMusic" to "D:UsersUserMusic". I am unable to edit the path on the "Music Properties-->Location" tab. I have tried everything. I cannot type or delete the path from the path field. I can edit any other special folder location (My Documents; My Videos, etc...). I went through the registry and changed any "C:UsersUserMusic" to "D:UsersUserMusic". In desperation, I also changed all "%USERPROFILE%Music" to "D:UsersUserMusic" (yeah, I know). Nothing changes the location in the location field of the Music Location tab. I rebooted after every change to the registry. I deleted the "Music" folder, rebooted and tried to edit the new "Music" folder with no joy. Any ideas of what might be going on? I'd hate to delete and then recreate the profile owing to the fact that I just spent half a day setting it up. This computer is on a domain and no other users are experiencing this problem.

Move Folder From XP To Windows 7?

Apr 9, 2011

I have 4 PCs network in Windows 7. A is primary Windows 7. B is win 7 networked. C is XP on Windows 7 network, and D is XP on Windows 7 network. I have a folder on C(XP) that is shared on the network and can be accessed from A, B and D. I want to delete that folder on the XP (C) and put it on A (Windows 7) to be shared on the network. Copied it to USB drive. Copied it from USB to A (Windows 7) HD. When I open the program that uses the files in the transferred folder, A (Windows 7) cannot find the folder/files on A that I copied. It looks for the old networked location on C, which is not there (deleted after copied). How do I stop the program from looking on C (XP) and find on A (Windows 7)? When I try to open the program on A(Windows 7) it will NOT let me go to ANY other folder except the shared folder on the C (XP) PC which no longer exists.

Move Bootmgr Folder

Nov 17, 2009

I have an existing XP install on one physical disk (disk 0 in BIOS). I installed another physical HD (disk 1 in the BIOS) and installed Win7 on this second disk. All worked fine and of course the boot manager “stuff” is located on the XP disk. (dual boot option comes up fine)
However, now I want to re-do the Win7 install (fresh install) on the second HD again, but this time, I will turn off disk 0 (XP) boot up with the Win7 DVD and install Win7 on the second drive (disk 1) which will keep the boot loader etc. on this second drive.

Ultimately what I want to do is to dual boot between these two drives (OS's) via the BIOS (making either Disk 0 or Disk 1 first in the boot order). My question is, what do I do with the existing boot manager folder (C:oot) that is on the XP HD from the previous Win7 install => just keep it, safe to delete it etc..(so XP just uses the boot.ini file). I hope that makes sense? I’m not very familiar with the Vista/Win7 boot manager.

Unable To Move Big File

Mar 11, 2012

I'm not sure if this may be more of a vmware issue, but I figured I'd start here. Basically I have a 56gig vmdk file, that refuses to move. The vm is not broken at all and works fine. I've moved several vm's off my laptop drive onto this new usb drive. I'm working with an alienware m11x r3 with a 750gb 7200rpm drive & a usb 3.0 wd my passport external drive that IS using drive compression. (blue text for file/folder names) I've tried to move this file via explorer and tera copy. both fail. in the explorer scenario, I've burnt at least the weekend attempting to get this file off my drive. in a few cases it gets down to just a smidgen of space in the transfer progress bar with a 'theoretical hour remaining', but that was 10 hours ago. when I'd look in resource manager,it starts off in a normal read from c drive and write to d drive action. but at the end, it is just writing, and its moving at like 700kb a sec.

Restoring Desktop Icon Location After Mistake?

Dec 19, 2011

I have two identical computer monitors running in 1080p each using a NVIDIA GTX460SE video card. I have all the icons on the left monitor (as in, the main one), but had them arranged specially and on all parts of the screen, not just the leftmost area.

When moving home from college for holiday break, I plugged the monitors in backwards (as in, monitor 1 to monitor 2's jack and vice versa) - so I unplugged both and corrected it. At some point, Windows freaked out and alphabetized all of my icons and shoved them over to the left. Now, my ordinary routine for fixing the broken alignment is a simple System Restore, as it does keep the desktop icon locations. However, on each of the 5 restore points I have, it keeps giving me these errors that a certain file couldn't be found in each (not the same one each time).

I'm curious if there's a way to manually grab the desktop icon location out of the system restore backups if that's ALL I need and not the entire restore image. I know the backups are in C:/System Volume Information, but I have NO idea where desktop icon locations are stored... I would have assumed it was in desktop.ini but nope!

I can't system restore at all... and installing the third-party solutions don't help as the icons are already screwed up. If it's just a registry key or file somewhere, in theory I could extract it from one of those backups and use it?
