Moving Backup Files From Vista To Windows 7
Mar 7, 2012
As my Vista machine was failing I did a full system backup. I did not do a simple file backup. That machine is now dead. Now I need to move the files within the system backup to my new Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit machine but I'm not finding any way to accomplish this.

I back up my files and system image weekly. I move the recorded TV shows (broadcast TV, nothing illegal) before that from my hard drive onto an external drive. Another drive in the same cabinet does the backup. It saves time and I won't want those files after a disc failure anyway. It would be cool to be able to program the computer to move those files (but not subfolders) over at, say 11.05 pm in preparation for the midnight backup. It would be easier to put the recorded TV in a subfolder though I suppose... then no code would have to be written to ignore subfolders, right?

I'm trying to restore files from a Vista backup into 7, but, once they're restored I can't find them.
It only affects files that were in the various 'my documents', 'my downloads' etc folders on my Vista install - files from other partitions etc restore fine.
It seems as if the files are definitely being restored somewhere, because if I restore them again I get 'would you like to overwrite these files' dialogs. I've tried searching for the filenames after they're restored but they don't appear. I think maybe it's possible that 7 is restoring them under a different user (although my user name on 7 is the same as it was on Vista).

I want to either move or restart Windows Backup to a new drive. So I'd like to wipe the current Backup off the drive it is currently on. I really don't care that much about saving older recovery points. Is there a way to just switch where the recovery is saved and once a new restore point has been created on the new drive I could just delete the old files on the other drive?

I am thinking of upgrading my Vista 32bit pc to Windows 7 64bit to make use of the full 4Gb RAM that my system has. I have 2 disks installed and one has a lot of data files on it. Can I remove the data disc (it isn't needed to run my Vista system), do a custom install of Windows 7 64 bit, reinstall all drivers and programs, then plug the data disc back in and see the data? Or do I really need to copy all this data to another humungous external drive, do the upgrade, then copy it all back again as Microsoft recommends?

I have recently upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7.Most things are working fine except that my cursor seems to be hyper-sensitive, jumps around without any apparent cause and makes using any typing programme a real chore as it will erase things onscreen if I don't watch every word I am typing or it will jump to another line and carry on typing there.

I currently have a hard drive with two partitions dual booting Win 7 and Vista. I need to move both OS's to a new hard drive. I've made a full backup of the drive with the Macrium Reflect program, but I don't know if restoring it on a new hard drive using the recovery CD will work. Will there be any problems booting the operating systems afterwards? Is there a better way or better program to do this? Does the type or brand of the new hard drive make a difference?

The test result is under Windows 7 build 7000
1. Open backup and restore center
2. Set backup settings
a. Choose backup locations to local disk, for example f:
b. Choose [Let me choose]
c. What do you want to back up?
Only choose the folder of c:program fileswindows photo viewer
Do not choose [Include a system image]
d. Backup summary
Items are c:program fileswindows photo viewer
e. Save settings and start backup
Result:
There is no files under F:TEST-PCBackup Set 2008-09-29 032022Backup Files 2008-09-29 032022Backup files 1.zip
So, the question is why we can not backup this folder at the first time(it should be a full backup)

I'm about to upgrade from xp to 7. My challenge is to move my installed apps without completely reinstalling. Please bear with me on this one, but how does this sound.
I purchased my machine 4 years back with the Vista o/s. I (and cubase, the main app which I purchased the laptop for) hated vista so I downgraded to XP Pro, which was far more stable at the time. As a result, I have a full, paid for copy of vista which I can use. I have, over the past few years, collected a vast array of apps, not all of which I have the instal media for. Also, the process of re-installing ALL of my applications would be hugely lengthy, time consuming, mind-numbingly boring, etc, etc. Would it be possible to upgrade to windows 7 via vista and keep all of my applications. To avoid instability, I thought I could then back up with Acronis, wipe the drive and do a clean install of windows 7, then reimport my apps/docs/settings etc from Acronis. Am I missing something or is this going to stand a fair chance of working?

Any simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.
Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

I had to do a reinstall of a Win 7 32bit pro OS for a user, but before I did, I moved her data to my machine, did the reinstall on her and then moved her data to her profile.
I logged in as her, and verified that her "my docs" and favorites were there and that I can access them. However, all of the data icons are transparent (folders on her desktop and the actual data in her mydocs).
Most of it is pictures and movies and I can access them, but everything is clear. I did notice that even the favorites are transparent and they do not show in the browser (IE) even though the link is in fact in the Favorites directory in her profile.

Last night we purchased a new pc with Win 7 loaded. We have an old and dying XP. It has been backed up using the Win backup facility to an external hard drive (assesories/system/backup). I imagine that restoring the data files will not be a big problem, but: She does not have all the original "program" CD's.It is a home pc and NOT networked. I read that a parallel cable could be attached between the two pc's and then programs "transferred" in this manner. Is there another way

When I try to rename a folder, I get a comment like something open in another folder or program and I know of nothing that it is open - Hence I cant make a rename. Also if I move a File to another folder, it just copies it and then it wont let me delete the original folder --- Doing this kind of stuff used to be so easy on XP , but I guess one has to learn it all over again.

about 2 weeks ago i installed windows on a new custom built computer, and everything was fine till about 3 or 4 days ago when it suddenly wouldn't let me empty the recyle bin, or move or rename any file from anywhere, not even my external HD. It doesn't give me any error when I try, just nothing happens at all. Also when i try to make a new file or folder inside an existing one i get a system error 340. I've tried booting into safe mode and deleting/moving/renaming and nothing. Same with Unlocker nothing seems to work. Ide hate to have to install windows again and loose things i have downloaded since i can't move them to my external HD or burn them on a disk.

I spent a lot of money on Vista Ultimate upgrade so I got 2 removable HD. One for vista and one for Windows 7. When I upgraded to Vista, nothing would work and I had a mess. I don't plan on doing that with Windows 7. So when Windows 7 gives me a problem and I don't have the time to fix it I will just slip in my Vista HD and continue working and when I have the time I'll fix the problems which might not be fixable like we don't have the driver yet for Windows 7. So I need the full version of Windows 7 Pro because I want to backup the OS using the backup that the OS supplies. What's the best way to buy the full version because everyone is trying to sell it for October 23?

Unfortunately I cannot just upgrade my Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate because I have my user files on a separate partition.
The Windows 7 installation DVD says to backup my files prior to installation. It does not specificly say to backup the files using the Windows backup and restore tool provided with Vista. I want to be sure... Can I backup my files using Vista's Backup and Restore and then "restore" or import them during the Windows 7 installation?

Can any one tell me a good reason why when I move a folder of folders and files any executables in those folders loose their compatibility and administrative settings?
Is there any way to prevent this happening?
If not, is there any way to apply this setting for a collection of files rather than one by one?

I bought it primarily so I could play Pokemon Black online with uber leet hax level 100 teams (PokeGen/PokeSav/etc) and such. I put the Kingston into the adapter, then put the adapter into the SD port, and then I can view the card on my computer. At first I was able to put the .nds file for Pokemon on there, and also the firmware for Wood. I was able to open Black just fine on my DS and play it for a while. I made a save file in-game that I was going to later edit on my computer (using the programs mentioned earlier), so I saved, turned off the DS, and put the card back in my computer. I can view the .nds file as well as the .sav file that I made, however when I try to bring the .sav file onto my computer, I get an error reading "Can't read from the source file or disk". I get this same error when trying to put files on it now (if it matters, it was just some random 1MB video file I found that I tried to put on the card this time)

I currently have a HDD with my os and about 70gb of programs on it. I recently bought a 60gb SSD, and would like to transfer my os across to it. I also wanted to keep the programs working on the HDD they are on currently. If this is not possible i could just uninstall majority of the programs so that the os will fit onto the SSD, or i could completely reinstall all the programs, but this would take a lot of time. If so, i would like to know how much of my settings ect that i can save for the new os.

Whenever I move folders from my shared folders ( Users/public/public documents for example) it copies the files instead of just simply moving them. The folders are on the same hard drive/partition so there does not seem to be any reason it should start doing this. I dont know what I could have changed on the computer to cause this to happen either. it is quite a frustrating problem however because large files take a while to transfer when they should be moved instantly.

I was moving my pictures to different folders, I was dragging and dropping rather than copying and pasting, but I realized after I was done that they weren't being passed to the folders and they're also nowhere to be found.
I don't know what to do and I'd hate to think my files are lost forever.
My computer is a Dell Inspiron 15, intel core i7.
