Restoring Files From Vista Backup To 7
Oct 24, 2009
I'm trying to restore files from a Vista backup into 7, but, once they're restored I can't find them.
It only affects files that were in the various 'my documents', 'my downloads' etc folders on my Vista install - files from other partitions etc restore fine.
It seems as if the files are definitely being restored somewhere, because if I restore them again I get 'would you like to overwrite these files' dialogs. I've tried searching for the filenames after they're restored but they don't appear. I think maybe it's possible that 7 is restoring them under a different user (although my user name on 7 is the same as it was on Vista).
Is there any way I can view these files?

Backstory: My computer decides to crash on me while browsing some site, and it failed to startup after that. After many tries of getting it to work through system restore/system repair, it still would not load up. I then see an advanced option of restoring to the system default, with an option of saving all personal data such as files and documents. After this successful reinstall, I have a huge folder (190 gigs!) worth of my old files sitting in a folder named 'Backup' in the C: drive, all on a fresh version of Windows 7 (ie: default programs and icons like internet explorer). I have tried running Windows' Backup and Restore application, but the aforementioned backup drive does not show up. Is it possible to transfer everything back?
tl;dr: restored old comp to system default, (with an option to save personal files/programs, all in a new folder C:/Backup) but can't figure out how to move/replace this system default back to my old setup.

The hard drive failed on my friend's Win 7 laptop. I replaced the hard drive, now I am in the process of recovering documents that he had backed up on an external hard drive. He was using Windows Backup. When I start the application in restore mode and direct it to the external hard drive, it shows a backup done on Jan 2. But when I browse through the backup folders using Windows Backup, it does not show any of his recent files. I went ahead and restored the folders, but the most recent files in the restored user folders are only from mid November

I backed up all of my data files over to a CD/ROM before restoring my Windows 7 PC due to a hard drive failure.
After successfully restoring the Windows 7 PC, I also restored my backed up files from the CD/ROM using HP RecoveryMgr, which was included as part of the backup process. Then I see all folders show "This folder is empty", even though the folder "Properties" show that the folder is not empty and contains files being backed up during the restore.
How can I make the files in the restored folders visible/accessible again?

As my Vista machine was failing I did a full system backup. I did not do a simple file backup. That machine is now dead. Now I need to move the files within the system backup to my new Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit machine but I'm not finding any way to accomplish this.

how I can restore a backup I made in Linux? Before I installed mac os x on my pc, I made a backup of everything on my hard drive via Linux but I had one error of copying a file. When I successfully installed mac os x, I installed Windows 7 on my other partition also successful. But then I deleted everything on that partition and just pasted my backup there => now windows won't boot. Has anybody got a solution so I won't lose all my settings and programs?

Sandy did damage my computer, either the MB or the CPU (Intel i5-760) is fried. At this point, it is not known, if my drives bit the dust as well. There are backups on the external drive, both Windows and Macrium images. The system being built has different MB and Intel i5-3350P CPU. This is an "unplanned" system hardware update and no preparation had been made for the Windows 7 drive for the migration.

My laptop was stolen recently. However, I was lucky to have a back up (old, really old) that I can use to recover at least some of my data.I now have a new laptop and I restored the backup on it. However, I created a user name different from the two that are on the backup. If I now create the two users, will they automatically be linked to the files that were restored? Alternatively, is there a way to link all files to the new username?

I have an HP 6735en pre-installed with vista (hp recovery partition) which I upgraded to windows 7. I have some compatibility issues so i would like to return to factory vista setup but have been reading that once you upgrade you cannot go back. My HP recovery manager only allows me to restore to a previous point and f11 does nothing. I have not created recovery disks before upgrading (yes slap me with the stupid stick) so is there any way to factory restore it since that's the only way I will be sure all my hardware and software will work perfectly again.

The test result is under Windows 7 build 7000
1. Open backup and restore center
2. Set backup settings
a. Choose backup locations to local disk, for example f:
b. Choose [Let me choose]
c. What do you want to back up?
Only choose the folder of c:program fileswindows photo viewer
Do not choose [Include a system image]
d. Backup summary
Items are c:program fileswindows photo viewer
e. Save settings and start backup
Result:
There is no files under F:TEST-PCBackup Set 2008-09-29 032022Backup Files 2008-09-29 032022Backup files 1.zip
So, the question is why we can not backup this folder at the first time(it should be a full backup)

Any simple backup program that is capable of backing up large files incrementally by splitting the file and backing up only changed parts of the file? The files I'm talking about are files that get altered by appending stuff at the end of the file, e.g. log files or mailbox files, so it's generally possible to split a new version of the file at the exact point where the old version stopped, purely by file size.
Specifically, I want to back up Thunderbird and SeaMonkey mailboxes without having to create additional subfolders within those programs. I understand that if something had changed near the beginning of the file, then the whole file will have to be backed up, unless the backup program is capable of some very clever searching, but mostly the files will change only by having data appended to it.

Ive done a clean install, and i previously backed up my Vaio. When i try to restore programs however, it wont let me do it. It says "your files have been restored" but also says " some program or system files were skipped because they cannot be restored to original location. To restore these files, try restoring the files again and select a different location." Which location do i chose so that the programs appear in my "all programs" tab?

I recently lost some files, so I did a system restore to a date that the files were intact to retrieve them. However, while the programs on the computer are now correctly set back to the system restore date, the files in question are still missing (at least partially). I'm curious is there exists a way to restore not the applications and system settings, but simply to restore old files, or if it's too late at this point. I suspect if I went to a professional they would be able to work some magic to restore the actual files, but it wouldn't be a standard procedure, and I don't have the funds right now to do so.
In more detail: I had XAMPP installed so I could do local testing before putting websites I was working on online. As such, the folder in which I kept all my local data for web development work was within XAMPP's 'htdocs' folder, which is where the local files needed to be stored so that apache and php could utilize them. However, since the install of XAMPP, i'd been having issues getting Apache to run - it worked occasionally, but would usually quit after a second of running each time I started it (that's a whole other issue though). In any case, because I couldn't figure out why Apache wasn't working in my XAMPP install, I decided, 'screw it, I'll give WampServer a try instead, and proceeded to uninstall XAMPP then restart the computer to get a clean slate before installing WAMP. Of course, I foolishly spaced the fact that all my local web development files were stored in the XAMPP files, and they were all deleted during the uninstall. So I proceeded to do a system restore to about 24 hours ago (the most recent system restore point). It seemed fine at first, until I tried to get my old web dev files back: I went to the htdocs folder in my now-restored XAMPP folder, but the old files were not intact! It seems that while XAMPP is back on my computer, all the files that were deleted during the initial uninstall were not restored. Specifically, and I can't for the life of me figure out why this would be, but the only parts that remained were the file structure (all the old folders where there, but not many of the files within them), Javascript files, and favicon image files. Everything else is still missing.
is there a way, within windows, to actually restore all those old files? Or due to the sequence in which the uninstall of XAMPP then the restore went, is it too late?

I spent a lot of money on Vista Ultimate upgrade so I got 2 removable HD. One for vista and one for Windows 7. When I upgraded to Vista, nothing would work and I had a mess. I don't plan on doing that with Windows 7. So when Windows 7 gives me a problem and I don't have the time to fix it I will just slip in my Vista HD and continue working and when I have the time I'll fix the problems which might not be fixable like we don't have the driver yet for Windows 7. So I need the full version of Windows 7 Pro because I want to backup the OS using the backup that the OS supplies. What's the best way to buy the full version because everyone is trying to sell it for October 23?

Unfortunately I cannot just upgrade my Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Ultimate because I have my user files on a separate partition.
The Windows 7 installation DVD says to backup my files prior to installation. It does not specificly say to backup the files using the Windows backup and restore tool provided with Vista. I want to be sure... Can I backup my files using Vista's Backup and Restore and then "restore" or import them during the Windows 7 installation?

I was using my desktop like normal then an error came up saying that there was a hdd failure, and that i needed to scan for errors. all my files disappeared and only this error would come up. There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.
Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.so then when i click on my second internal drive after the reinstall of the new OS it shows empty i have to go in and show hidden files and folders.. now they show again transparent. also i plug in my external to get the recent back up and all those files are still transparent when i move them to my desktop that is freshly OS installed they are still grey/transparent and i have to keep the show hidden files and folders to view them.. so its all my music, pics, documents etc they are all greyed out..i tried to copy my backup IE favs into my new IE browser and they wont show up because they are hiden it shows it copied to the favs folder but in ie i cannot view them if that makes any sense.

Is there a good system that backs up only the new stuff? Many are corel files and some folders are pretty big to backing stuff up yet again takes a lot of time and space.

When I u/g to 7 from Vista it left a bunch of folder on each partition of my hard drive. They were prefixed by the $ sign. They are large - many Gbs and I want to get rid of them. When I try to delete them I get the usual UAC window asking for permission, which I give, but then I get a window saying that i have to get permission from PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS.I am signed on as administrator and further checking with whoami.exe shows that I am PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS.I have given PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS ownership and full control privileges via Properties/security/owner tabs but I still get this problem. Why do I need permission to delete when it is telling me that the permission is needed from ME???? If I am logged on as PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS - according to whoami, why is it still telling me that I need permission from myself?
