Cannot Delete Old Vista Files
Jan 26, 2012
When I u/g to 7 from Vista it left a bunch of folder on each partition of my hard drive. They were prefixed by the $ sign. They are large - many Gbs and I want to get rid of them. When I try to delete them I get the usual UAC window asking for permission, which I give, but then I get a window saying that i have to get permission from PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS.I am signed on as administrator and further checking with whoami.exe shows that I am PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS.I have given PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS ownership and full control privileges via Properties/security/owner tabs but I still get this problem. Why do I need permission to delete when it is telling me that the permission is needed from ME???? If I am logged on as PBS - OFFICE - PCPBS - according to whoami, why is it still telling me that I need permission from myself?

I upgraded to Windows 7 64-bit from Vista Ultimate 64-bit.
While in Vista, I had automatic backups to an external drive. I cannot delete these old backups manually, and the Backup and Restore module does not recognize them as backups, so it won't manage them.
How can I delete these old backups. When I try to delete them, I get an "Access denied" error. I can't even open the folder with the name of the computer.

I have 64 bit windows 7. I deleted dungeon siege 2 using the control panel, remove program. It was removed except for one file in Program files x86/microsoftgames/dungeonSiege2. I tried manually deleting it but get this "the action can't be completed because the folder or file in it is open in another program. Close folder or file or retry" There is nothing open. I clicked properties of the file and security and clicked administrator and get the same message. Never had this problem removing remnants of programs in xp.

I would like to remove Vista from my dual boot setup. Here is how I got to where I am now.
I had Vista installed on my PC hard drive (was C. Later, I decided to install Windows 7 HP on a new and seperate HDD. I unplugged the Vista HDD and added the new HDD and installed Windows 7 as if from scratch (I was worried that the install would mess up all my files on Vista). After the Windows 7 was up and running, I then reconnected Vista redesignated it as drive E: and after some searching on how to, I created the dual boot using my Windows 7 disk so I'm assuming the boot file in on drive C: along with Windows 7.
I now want delete the dual boot and Vista so I can use the drive as a backup drive or possibly Win8. I have found several methods to do this but none that really have my specific situation.

Just about every time I try to permanently delete a large file or folder, either by shift/delete or emptying the recycle bin the operation hangs up.The little window opens and it counts up the size of the file and that it. Nothing else overtly happens. The status bar never starts indicating and the window just sits there with the little green lights chasing each other across it. If I try to cancel or close the window it nothing happens.During the time all this is going on, I can hit ctrl/alt/del and select Task Manager and it simply goes back to the desktop with this window still squatting there doing it's thing. I have pinned TM to the task bar and tried starting it from there but it never starts. Eventually everything just slows to a stop and nothing works which would seem to indicate some kind of memory leak. There are no error messages during any of this.I have to hit reset and restart the computer that way in order to regain control and we all know how bad an idea this is. I've already had my boot sector eaten once causing me to have to do a total rebuild and I'd prefer not to have to do it again.

I am having a peculiar issue with MKV files - when I attempt to rename or delete these files I am (sometimes) presented with the following error message:
In order to rename the offending MKV files I need to boot into Ubuntu (using a Live OS from CD) and if I want to delete the files I either must use Ubuntu or a "file unlocking program" within Windows (the FileAssassin tool that ships with MalwareBytes is my current preference).

I'm trying to clean up an external drive by deleting various files (using Windows Explorer) but like every file gives me "an unexpected error is keeping you from deleting the file error 0x80070570".
Now for some reason I can delete the files using del in the command prompt. But I need to delete hundreds of specific files scattered around, so I need to figure out how to get around this error.I don't want to chkdsk etc on the external either. I just want to bypass the error.

I have about 5 MKV files that I can not delete or rename or move. I can copy them, but then the copies will not be deletable at wherever I paste them. I have tried running as an administrator and "taking ownership", but still can not delete them. They are all .MKV if that matters. I am on Win 7 home 64.

So, lately my Windows 7 started acting weird. I'm not able to delete or rename files that I have used recently. Let's say I run File.exe, close it and I want to delete/rename this file. Sometimes I'm trying to do that I get error about something that couldn't delete file because it's in use. It also happens with auto patchers in games, system denies to delete/modify items. Happens with compiler aswell, they're not able to over-write output file. I'm not going to post screenshot since it doesn't happen always and I don't really know how to reproduce this, but it's regular error box with message similar to "Couldn't delete file. File is in use/opened by some process." or something like that with 2 buttons "Retry" and "Cancel". Current solution for that is Log off/Reboot or use application called "UnLocker" (I found it via Google some time ago)

I had a dualboot of Windows 7 and Windows XP. Later I just only wanted to have Windows 7. So I downloaded Vista Boot Manager and deleted Windows XP on the list, so now its only booting from Windows 7. But all those files of Windows XP are still left on the partition. And I have no access to delete them, not even in a save boot. Unlocker helped me a while, but I'm now stuck with 3 folders which I can't delete. I've got now 50 GB left on my HDD, and the partition of Windows XP was 200 GB, so I think you can realize I want those GB back!

I run windows 7, but I decided to install XP along with Windows 7, so now I have 2 operating systems; I had many problems with XP so I decided to re-install windows 7 (custom installation), so the XP is no longer present.
But now every time I start my PC this screen appears: How can I stop this screen from appearing?

I am not sure what went off because till today it used to work like a charm. Any help would be appreciated!

Wonder if anyone knows of some freeware software that can permanently delete selected files/folders?..rather than just sending them to the recycle bin because we all know they don't really get deleted....just get made invisible so they dont show up anymore and still actualy take up some disk space.

I am dual booting Windows 7 64 and Vista and using EASYBCD in each operating system. I am able to Boot into either program with no problems. However When I start EasyBCD in Vista I get the Vista1 and Vista2 screenshots. The Vista3 is what My msconfig tab in the Vista operating system looks like.
When In Windows 7 operating system and use EasyBCD I get the Windows 7 1 screenshot. My msconfig boot tab in Windows 7 looks like Windows 7 2. Let me add that I'm using a product called RollbackRx (ONLY) on the Win 7 operating system, both systems are on seperate harddrives. What do I have to do to get the boot files to be seen in the Vista msconfig boot tab, and the EasyBCD view settings window?
