Windows 7 64-bit To 32-bit Reinstallation?

Jul 26, 2011

I've worked as a PC tech for the last year and a half at a local joint here in College Station, TX and BC has been a wonderful resource in the past for me. To date, I haven't needed to ask questions directly; unfortunately, this latest one has stumped me. I have done my best to peruse the forum for previous topics of this nature and have found nothing. I realize it's a pain to answer the same thing twice so please feel free to redirect me if you found something I didn't.Unlike most problems for which I've sought help on BC, this one is personal. I'm trying to reinstall Windows 7 on my laptop but I'm running into some problems. First, I've run MEMTEST and HDD checks and everything checks out. Second, the full OS installation history was (OEM) 32-bit Vista, 32-bit Windows 7, and 64-bit Windows 7 (currently, or more appropriately formerly as I've already reformatted the hard drive).

I'd like to install Windows x86 on this machine as I've recently purchased a new performance laptop on which I have x64 Win7 installed. Before you protest, the laptop I'm asking about only has 2 GB RAM so there's no point in having x64 installed (and in fact it causes a lot of compatibility problems for legacy programs; yes, I installed Virtual Machine w/ XP but the graphics card doesn't carry over so I can't run the programs I need). Unfortunately, every time I try to boot to the DVD with Win7 x86 on it, it loads the files, shows the "Starting Windows..." splash screen, and then BSODs. The error? "c000021a"I've put a x64 Win7 disc in and it doesn't have this error at all. Any idea what might be causing this? I'm emarrassed to ask since I should know these things as a tech but I'm at my wits end here. Google hasn't been kind to me and I'm about ready to give up

Reinstallation With No Optical Drive?

Jan 14, 2011

I presently have a 6 year old Dell X300 running XP, it has been a good machine but is getting 'tired' and I am looking at getting something new. The type of machines I am looking at like a HP Pavilion dm1 or a Lenovo Thinkpad X100/ 120 (new) running windows 7 of course. They do not come up a optical drive. So my question is what happens in the case of a HD failure? With the X300 I have reloaded windows on to the new HD using the CD drive and recovery disks provided. But in 2011 what is the way of being prepared for a HD failure with machines that have no optical drive and no windows 7 supplied reinstallation cds/dvds?Is there way of doing it thru a USB flask drive? is that the answer?

Reinstallation Of W-LAN Driver Doesn't Work?

Aug 28, 2011

problem with my W-LAN device. Recently Ive got a strange feeling about it because some things didnt work correctly, so I decided to reinstall the driver. It didnt work directly (I dont know why), so I tried to uninstall it first, to install it again. Now I got this message: This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)An update for the latest driver was useless because I already got the latest one. I tried both installing it from the device manager several times, which failed everytime with this message to come, and by the driver setup (there is a folder available on my computer with all drivers installed on it), which seemed not to have any effect, although it said "Installation complete".

Eliminating 100MB Partition On Reinstallation SSd

Sep 7, 2012

I have been running windows7 for a year now on my pc. Its super fast and I love it. However; I have struggled to get Home Groups to work, and there are some other aggravating issues that I think I'll clear up by re-installign windows. I'll be using my family pack of Windows7 Upgrade DVDs to get it done. Currently, I have a kingston 128 (maybe its bigger, don't recall) SSD that I keep my OS on. I have a 1TB HDD that I keep my data, user profiles, and all temp files on. So, I currently have a drive letter "D" that is the 100MB reserved partition. I already don't like keeping all my stuff on a second drive, but the idea that its on "F" is really odd to me.

How To Create Windows 7 "Reinstallation Disc"

Nov 17, 2012

ok so years ago, i bought an Dell inspiron 1520 which i still have today. it came with a windows xp "re-installation disc" from microsoft, which does what it says, allows me to reinstall the OS. this is different from a "recovery disc" since it only installs the OS and not the factory settings and drivers, which is exactly what i like, a fresh install. i've used this disc to reformat and reinstall XP on multiple dell computers and even on HP and lenovo laptops as long as i had the genuine product key enterednow i just recently bought a asus laptop and it does not come with any windows reinstall disc at all..wth. i feel cheated because the money i paid for the laptop should include the OS itself, so they should have given me an OS disc. the asus laptop is running windows 7. now is there any way for me to make my own "re-installation Disc"

Troubles Transferring Windows Mail Vista To Windows 7 Windows Live Mail 2011

Apr 22, 2011

MS and their mail systems are giving me grief. I have a Vista 32 PC using "Windows Mail" and want to transfer email folders (lots) and messages to Windows 7 using Windows Live Mail 2011.Windows Mail was a replacement for Outlook express on Vista.Windows Live Mail 2011 is a replacement for Windows Mail on Windows 7.I tried a couple of things.

1) Basic Export and ImportI exported relavent files: Account info, Contacts and all the messages to a folder (in Windows Mail format) on old computer and used the old "Addias" transfer - copied folder to stick and RAN it over to the new computer.
- Imported (using the Windows Mail format) the Account info successfully,
- imported the Contact info successfully.
- Import Messages - appeared at first to be successful

Issue: Message folders appear to be renamed and some folder names have been truncated, not all folders appear to be there. (Looks like "long Name folders greater that 8 characters get truncated)

2) Tried the "Easy transfer mechanism (Vista and Win7 transfer utility) - but couldn't get the new computer to see the Vista even though I could see them on the network. I thought that this would transfer the folder names correctly.I'm about to try a time consuming effort of coping folder by folder (export/Import)What I am more concerned about is that the individaul messages may have the same issue Ie not all coming accross and subject names being lost. Looking for alternative or third party transfer solutions?

Windows 7 Hangs On "Starting Windows" After Finished Expanding Windows

Jul 17, 2012

I just bought myself some new parts for a new computer I built. After buying the parts and assembling it I tried to install windows 7, keeping in mind that this computer has no previous os installed in it, completely blank. I somehow managed to get to safe mode and install till the part where it says expanding windows files completing that step fully and rebooting to continue the installation, I have no idea why but after when it restarts, it freezes at the "starting windows" screen with the four orb animation. It should just go to the next screen with the blue wallpaper asking me for the language I would like and what not. But it just gets stuck there and doesn't move on, I tried

rebooting
removing as much devices I had plugged into the motherboard
removing everything but the mouse and key board
removing the graphics card
removing one of the two sticks of ram

[code]...

I have tried everything I know of and I don't think I need to update my bios because no one else has encountered this problem. Swell I am not very good with computers I am very new to this so...I also heard about updating drivers , but don't u need to actually be able to login to your computer to download and install them? I can't even log in, I wait for the windows logo to pass but it never does please help Tom Hardware community.

Add Another Windows 7 To Windows XP/ Windows 7 Dual Boot?

Apr 8, 2011

I bought a new computer that came with a Win 7 HP license, however I already have a copy of Win 7 Ultimate on another smaller HDD that dual boots with XP.I have copied the Win 7 HP partition to the smaller HDD that has dual boot Win 7 Ultimate / XP using EASUS Partition Manager. Then I disk copied the smaller HDD to the new larger HDD thus wiping the original contents of the HDD.So far so good, the larger HDD now has C: Windows 7 Ultimate; D: XP Pro; E: Windows 7 HP. Of course the boot manager only has entries for the C: and D: partition.I think I can use bcdedit to add another entry but I am a little confused about how to do this, I've seen examples for Win 7 and XP or Vista but not for 2 copies of Win 7. Can anyone tell me what bcdedit commands I need to run? For instance I could run "bcdedit /create {} /d "Win 7 HP" but I don't know what to put inside of the {}, I think I need a new UUID but I don't know if I should be running "bcdedit /createstore" first or something else.
