Win7 + X-Fi: Can't Decode DD/DTS (Isn't This Built Into
I'm getting a little frustrated because the latest Creative X-Fi drivers say this: Added Features or Enhancements:
For systems using Windows 7 or Windows Vista
* What U Hear feature is enabled.
To find out the Product ID of your audio device and if it supports the following feature in Windows XP, click here.
* Dolby® Digital and DTS® decode re-established for sound cards that included decoding in their Windows XP drivers (Not applicable for products that included a 3rd party software DVD player license in the package). I've checked the compatibility, and my Xtreme Music supports this DD/DTS decoding.
However, in the audio console I do not have a decoder tab and my SPDIF I/O tab has the SPDIF drop-down grayed out and set to "Default". How do I get my X-Fi Xtreme Music to hardware decode DD/DTS? (under Windows 7).

Brother HL5250DN Isn't Recognized
The Brother HL-5250DN printer isn't recognized. Attempted to install the printer driver and the error message that I get is "CWindowsinfprnbr001.inf was not found". That was using the Vista installer, and the file name is "5200INST-0100-EN". The printer is networked through the router, and I can hit it with my Linux box and with the other computers in the house. Any ideas? *edit* Ultimately ended up installing without a hitch using the .inf file for Vista located in a different folder. I think that this was the one... C:UsersMikeAppDataLocalTempENGLISHDriverpclVistax32ENGLISHw5250dn.inf Works wonderfully and I can now work from home again.

HP Deskjet D4160 Isn't Working
I've had my HP since before Vista, and it worked perfectly with that and XP. I'm running Windows 7 64bit now, and I have the latest 64bit driver installed for the printer, but it hasn't helped at all. The printer is recognized by Windows, and is currently set to the default printer as well. However, I can't print from IE or Word, but strangely enough, I can print from Notepad. Word gives me an error saying a default printer hasn't been designated or it can't locate a default printer. My suspicion is that HP just doesn't have any Windows 7 compatible drivers since the official retail copies are still months away from hitting the shelves. Any ideas for a fix, or even just a work-around?

Upon Boot, Internet Isn't Recognized
My roommate and I are both using Windows 7 on our computers. I'm using 32-bit and he's using 64-bit, and we're both experiencing this problem. When we boot up our computers and log-in, we see that networks are detected, but there is no internet connection. The fix we find is to hit the system tray icon, and click refresh on the Currently Connected To pop-up. It'll think for a second, and recognize the internet. It's not so much a problem as a Windows 7 buglet. Is this a common issue?

Progress Bars Freezing When Mouse Isn't Moving
I installed Win 7 enterprise on my pc this weekend and noticed that say for instance i'm downloading a file from the internet, the progress of the download will stop when the mouse pointer is ot moving around the screen. When I start to move the mouse around the desktop the download continues, same for when a website is loading up, the site will stop loading or come to a crawl when the mouse isn't moving, then when the mouse is moved again, the site will continue to load at normal speed and if i stopp moving the mouse again it will again come to a halt or crawl. What could this be, driver issue, harware issue? Win 7 Enterprise Dell Optiplex 760 with 4gb Ram, 300gb HDD, 256mb ATI graphics card IE 8, Adobe Flash 10

Why Isn't Default Printer Part Of Location Settings ?
One of my biggest annoyances with the new location sensing stuff is that as part of setting up networking defaults for a locaiton you don't allow the user to set a different default printer for each location.  There were any number of apps for XP that handled setting up location based setting and ALL of them included setting a different default printer for each location. Is the lack of this some itnernal Microsoft political thing? You default printer at work and at home are different.  Everyone has this issue. It is just plain silly not to address this. One other point: I'd really like the ability to run a script as part of changing locations.

Action Center Icon Says That A Backup Is Running Even When It Isn't
I thought I'd try out the backup function. Several times so far it's got stuck on 15%, the latest for several hours. I've tried restarting it, rebooting, even doing a system restore back to before I'd run backup for the first time. The weird thing is that the action center icon says that a backup is running even when it isn't and that message remains even after the system restore, suggesting it's some kind of flag/registry entry that isn't being reset. Anyone else come up against a problem doing the backup? This is the first time I've tried it since upgrading from Vista SP1. I'm using a USB HDD to backup on, the same one that I used to store the Vista system restore before I upgraded ;-) Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. It's more of an annoyance than anything else so far, but I would like to backup my data at some point. Other than that, the beta has been a remarkably pleasurable experience.

Is there a way to change the default folder view from 'Library' to 'Computer' ?

No 'explorer' After In-place Upgrade (to Win7) From Vista Ultimate (both 64-bit)
After installing Windows 7 on a well-working VISTA Ultimate 64-bit machine with Window 7's 64-bit upgrade, a couple of hours later all seemed well - UNTIL ...The Welcome screen (normal - and in high resolution) 2550 x 1600 - then a black screen with only "Windows 7<new line> Evaluation copy, Build 7100".Never any progress after this - explorer won't load (or exits right after it loads).Ctrl-Alt-Delete brings up Windows Task Manager, and you can run virtually anything by selecting "New Task" and browsing to the appropriate executable. Office 2007, Outlook, the Internet, etc. can all be run without problem using this method. There are NO icons anywhere - no task bar - no start button - NOTHING. Have tried countless times. I cannot get to Windows Update (because there is NO start button).I DO get explorer to run in "Safe Mode" - but can't get resolution high.I did dual boot VISTA Ultimate and Windows 7 for several months. It was only when I delete the previous beta and tried to install Windows 7 that all "H" broke loose. I tried upgrading the video drivers (from ATI for 4890) and those installed OK - but can't get to the control panel for those either.I've tried everything. Explorer (NOT INTERNET EXPLORER) will not run in 'normal mode.'I don't want to do a complete reinstall on a 'clean' HD unless I have to. I can access all my data now using the Task Manager - but I have so many programs installed it would take days and days to redo everything from scratch.Any suggestions?

'doesn't Have A Valid IP Adress' Error
I'm running Windows 7 64-bit. Evaluation version 7100. The driver for the ethernet connection is some sort of Intel driver built in with the Dell E520 Motherboard. The thing is, the wireless works. I use a D-Link Xtreme N Desktop Adaptor (DWA-552). But my computer is in such an awkward location in the house that it's not really an excellent option, so I got 20m of ethernet cable to hook up my PC to the router which is a D-Link DI-614+. The Router and modem are connected to a PC that is running Windows XP. When I plug in the cable to my computer it sorts it out for a while but it ends up saying it doesn't have a valid IP address? This only occurs with the ethernet cable and not the wireless. Could this be a case that my computer is too advanced? What if I rolled back to 32-bit or XP? The drivers for the DI-614 are already at the latest, and D-Link discontinued support for it like 5 years ago. There are several other computers in the network and they work with the ethernet cable and wireless too, but they're all XP. So it's probably something with Windows 7. Having stable connection to the internet is just the main goal I want here.

DivX 6 Encode AVI's Won't Play In Media Center
I am having a very odd problem. I have a bunch of files on another computer that I used to stream to this computer when it was Vista Ultimate running in Media Center. Now, with 7 RC Ultimate, when I try to stream the very same files within Media Center, Media Center itself crashes and has to be restarted. This seems to be on ANY AVI that I have that is DivX 6 or XviD encoded (I think XviD anyway, I have definitely narrowed it down to being a DivX problem). I can go out to Windows Explorer and choose the very same file and play it perfectly fine in the regular Media Player application. I am not understanding why it plays in Media Player, but not in the much more desireable Media Center.

But tests prove that such drives are actually slower than standard laptop hard disks.

Win 7 - Notices But Does Not 'see' External Usb Hard Drive
I upgraded from Vista Home Premium SP2 (32Bit) to Windows 7 Home Premium (32Bit) and after the upgrade my external usb hard drive can not be seen. The system notices it when it is plugged in and/or powered on but does not show it under My Computer or any other drive display option. I have seen other posts about this all without a solution- could I have missed the solution - if so please forgive this posting and please point me in the right direction. If there hasn't been a solution posted and you know how to solve this issue I am very interested. The Windows 7 Hardware Compatibility indicates this drive is supported and the upgrade advisor did not object to it.

Router In 'Port Mapping' Tight Loop, With UPNP
Since a few days ago, I've noticed my internet service grind to a halt intermittently. Checking the router logs, I find many pages like those below. (192.168.1.100 is my Windows 7 PC. 88.97.aa.bb is the [munged for my security] internet address of my router). Has the W7 network discovery protocol gone into overdrive? My router is a Linksys Wag200G. I've got an AV product plus Defender, so malware seems unlikely? I don't play with ____, torrentz or P2P.I'd hate to see this on a big corporate network as it's effectively a Denial of Service attack!

Kensington USB 'expert Mouse' Trackball - Any Success ?
got a recently built new machine and only one relatively minor issue. Kensington Expert-Mouse trackball (gotta love their naming convention) - Win7 recognises it as a mouse and it does work, but I'd really like to get proper functionality if I can. The scroll-wheel only works intermittantly and I have no options for customising the buttons (or using the extra buttons at all). Unfortunately Kensington isn't much help with drivers, with support for nothing more recent than XP. I tried to be clever and use the Vista drivers for a more recent version, but no dice. Does anyone know if there are any hacks, workarounds, etc to get these working properly? Or if there are any plans to provide support natively in Win7 itself? It's not a deal-breaker for me, but would just be nice.

Explorer Don't Show Computer And Library's (Documents, Pictures, Music)
When I open the first explorer window I can't see any of my drives or library's (Documents, pictures, music...). When I open a second instance of the explorer, all the drives are available but then without doing anything the green progresbar on top of the explorer window starts to grow but it takes most of the time around 10 to 15 minutes to complete. When I open a drive and switch to any folder the progresbar starts all over again. It takes again such a long time. I experience the same problem with the configuration screen, none of the icons will be shown, but when I open a few explorer instances they will be reapear. Does anyone have the same problem or something similar?

I’ve tried: Scan for hardware changes in Device Manager; Ran fixmbr and fixboot ; and drive is visible in the bios. Funny thing I noticed when booting from a win XP CD to install new windows it only gives me a choice on the first drive or partition but not the new drive.

Post Win7 Upgrade To Do's
First off, I just migrated over to Windows 7 Forums from Vistax64 and am excited. I'm currently running Vista Home Premium 64-Bit on a Pentium i7 with 6gigs of Ram and a pretty hardcore video card. Plus, the computer is only 4 months old and i am a pretty tidy user with very little on the drive. SO: I've elected to upgrade instead of clean install. Now, I'm not looking for any responses explaining to me why I'm an idiot for upgrading instead of doing a clean install because I'm not. I am aware of the drawbacks and I'm ok with them, though they form the backdrop to my question in this post. There have been a lot of posts about why you should go for a clean install. I hope this post about upgrading gets some intelligent attention, too. Here's my question: what steps can I (and other upgrading users) take post-upgrade to minimize the "dust" from my (our) old vista OS? For example, a good registry cleaning seems like a good place to start. But what else?

Bug: Gadgets Have Sticky Alignments Even When 'Align Icons To Grid' Option Is Unchecked
Windows 7 Build 7100. When right clicking on the desktop, click menu 'View' / 'Align Icons to Grid' to choose whether or not elements on the desktop should be aligned automatically or not. This option should also apply to the alignment behaviour of desktop gadgets, which have annoying "sticky" alignments when they are close to each other or the edge of the screen. Since users tend to group gadgets near one another, and near the edges of the screen, this is a particularly frequent problem. It is also an annoying one!

Opening Word 2007 Document 'Connecting To Printer, Press Esc To Cancel'
Word opens normally, but if I then try to open an existing document, or open a document to start Word, then, in the bottom left corner I get 'Connecting to Printer, Press Esc to cancel'. It takes anything up to 30 seconds for the document to then appear after which I can work on it normally and any subsequent documents opened in the session open immediately. This is on a desktop pc with both printers connected via USB. The issue has only just started happening over the last week or so, possibly after Office was updated. This is a month old clean Windows 7 Professional installation and Office was installed at the same time. It doesn't matter which printer I set as default the problem still occurs. I've checked that I have the latest drivers for each printer (Windows had found them both on installation anyway). The pc is on a home network but it makes no difference if any other pc/laptop is connected or not. Word is the only program having this problem, Excel opens immediately, as do all non MS programs. There's no indication in Event Viewer of any criticals or warnings. I've seen this problem listed on other occasions but the problem seems to occur only on networked printers and the fix of changing the default printer to a 'non-real' one is no good for me. Anyone else had the problem & found a solution?
